    Since being appointed as Ajax manager on the 28th December 2017, Erik ten Hag has transformed the club from a Europa League team and the second best domestically, to the undisputed of the Eredivisie and a serious dark horse for the Champions League. Setting up in a 4-2-3-1, Erik Ten Hag coaches his Ajax team to play a vertical tiki-taka style - possession based football but played at a higher tempo and with more direct passing than the tiki-taka made famous by Pep Guardiola. In possession, Ten Hag’s Ajax build out from the back using short passes which sees a preference for technical players with the ball. This is most noticeable in goal where Andre Onana, an excellent ball playing goalkeeper who was banned for doping, was replaced by 38 year old Remko Pasveer because of his ability on the ball. There’s a clear structure that the team adheres to, but players interchange positions to create variations within it.
    Ajax generally look to stretch the pitch as much as possible and the outside players take up very wide positions. The big space needed to be covered by the opposition can cause pressers to think before they press. Often this hesitation creates time for an Ajax player who is initially marked by the presser’s cover shadow to move and create a new passing lane. What’s dangerous about this Ajax team is that when they break the first line of pressure, Ten Hag’s attacking structure often creates too many progressive passes to stop.
    ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
    In attack we see Ajax shift to a 3-2-2-3. A big focus of Ajax this season is creating overloads. Most notably we see 1 v 1s or qualitative overloads created out wide with the wingers.
    When they’re in possession, the other 4 most forward players can create a front 5 with the winger, which naturally outnumbers a back 4, invariably creating a spare man. Whilst we see the wingers dribble at their man, hit the byline and cut the ball back or cross low for a teammate, we see the wingers use underlaps to pull the opposition apart, with Dusan Tadic a big part of this. And to go with the progressive and modern styles of chance creation through positional play, underlaps and low crosses, this season has seen Ten Hag use a physically imposing striker in Sebastien Haller as a target man, allowing them to play route one at times.
    When Ajax lose the ball they deploy a counter press, with the closest players to the ball engaging to slow the counter attack or regain possession. If they’re unable to regain the ball, Ajax drop into a variable 4-5-1 as they look to defend from the front using a man to man press.
    In terms of personnel there isn’t one player that’s crucial to Ajax this season. Obviously their best players make them perform at a better level but Ajax don’t break down without one or two men. At 19, 20 and 21 respectively, Ryan Gravenberch, Jurrien Timber and Antony all look like stars of the future. But they’re just the wonderkids. Lisandro Martinez, Edson Alvarez and Noussair Mazraoui are all more than ready to play for a top side in one of Europe’s top leagues.
    Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
    Tactically excellent, incredibly exciting to watch with players that are constantly improving, there isn’t a team in the Champions League that shouldn’t be worried about Erik ten Hag’s 21-22 Ajax side.
    But anyway guys what do you think? Have you been impressed by Ajax this season? And are they better than the Champions League semi-finalist? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

      IMO Utd will hire him, bring in 6 players, it won't work out, and then we'll move onto a manager with a different style who the players won't fit neatly into - just like all other other managers post Fergie.
      United have a different style/philosophy to AJAX, always have, first 11 mightn't adapt, larger squad mightn't adapt, academy players coming through mightn't adapt.
      All that is a lot of change, made harder by the club being dysfunctional to begin with.
      I'd rather Ten Hag stay at Ajax or go somewhere where it's possible to succeed at.
      Unless he can completely transform club management structures - I think we'll never compete with the well run / well oiled teams like City or Liverpool domestically, never mind the usual juggernauts of the Champions League until that's fixed. It's all too easy to fall apart otherwise

    As an ex player and coach. Great analysis, I have watched Ajax 6 times in the stadium
    This year. A big part is Berghuis becoming number ten, his movement and passes keep the flow of the attacking pace. Out of possession alvares is a beast. Wins it back and moves it. You covered the rest. The team looks amazing.

    • @eduardmoss3116

      Unfortunately Gravenberch has been disappointing this season and looses possession a lot, he got a knock and since then Alvarez klaasen and berghuis on ten have perfected the midfield. I hope grav can find his form from last season when he comes back, to add to it. Timber Alvarez and Martinez are the warriors for the team. Antony is a magician, tadic and blind are leaders. Haller is a true 9. Mazroui is the smartest most technical RB around.

      Co-signing that. Before the Dortmund games i started seeing Gravenberchs declining form and lack of concentration. If Gravenberch would have been in a great shape he should have scored at least 7 goals by now. I also couldn't understand the criticism against Klaassen and observed that a Berghuis, Klaassen and Alvarez Midfield would have been ideal. I couldn't understand why Ten Hag was holding so much on Gravenberch. But i guess thats more of an economic question.

    Nice analysis though I disagree that PSV full back needs to meet Gravenberch out wide as PSV defensive line is then broken and there is too much space for Tadic.
    In my opinion the nearest midfielder (27 - Gotze?) needs to come across (and PSV need to be defending with a minimum of two banks of four).
    In fact restructing the team to be more counter attack based against Ajax would be the better option.
    Will be interesting to see how Ten Hag gets on in the Premier League as I'm sure you know it's a totally different level to Eredivisie.

    Been an Ajax fan for many years now and they're the most dominant they've ever been. Not convinced they'll win the champions league but they have the ability to give any team a challenging contest. I can see them making the quarters or even semis. Liverpool vs Ajax would be such a great game IMO. Btw Pasveer is pronounced "Pasfeer" rather than "Pasvaar" (i know dutch names are a nightmare to pronounce). Interestingly, Gravenberch has been playing deputy to Berghuis in recent games as Berghuis is more of an attacking threat and in games against weaker opponents can have more of an impact.

    • @deanVodkahouse
      @deanVodkahouse Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with what you are saying, I am a ajax fan also, but as you say this is the most dominant Ajax have been and I really want them to win the CL plus they won't get a better chance considering how well they are playing now, I mean do Liverpool, man city or bayern fans think of only getting to the quarters or even the semis? No, they mostly think of being in the final and winning it and so your predictions are downplaying Ajax, if they were in the prem you would say they could win the CL more than likely but they aren't but I want them to win it so much that quarters or semis is a let down for me because this team is on fire, it's the final and winning it for me... Not being a runner up, the mindset of fans should be Ajax can win it, that's mine and I am English and me not saying ajax can win it means Liverpool and co can instead and thats something I don't want to do. This is Ajax's time to win the CL, there won't be a better time.

    • @vwisse
      @vwisse Před 2 lety +2

      This century I agree it's the most dominant Ajax has been. But I wouldn't say ever. Van Gaal's Ajax in the early to mid nineties was more dominant. That team had an unbeaten season in the domestic league and stayed unbeaten in the champions league for 1.5 seasons. Also won all three European cups there were at the time in the span of a decade. Early 70's Ajax was pretty dominant too, winning the Europa Cup 1 three years in a row. That was before I was born but the 80's and 90's I remember well, was in the stadium with my dad regularly.
      I have been an Ajax fan since I was 7. I won't say we will win the Champion's League. But I haven't felt this confident that we can do it since 1995.

Because it puts ajax back on the map in the time as I say of the super rich dominating so I really will be gutted if they don't do it, my mindset is they have to do it this season as they may not get a better chance with the current form the players are in

    Same goes for other names, including all of the names with 'van'. Such as 'van de Sar'. Which British people pronounce as if it's a car. But the correct pronunciation is 'fun-duh-Sar'. Also it's not 'van de beak' like a birds beak. It's 'fun-duh-bake' as in to bake a cake.
