Recently, I had a MAJOR WOODWORKING MISHAP in my shop. I lost all of the sanders in my sanding station, and ended up having to replace everything. Join me as I review what options are available and why I chose to stay with a workhorse in my shop, the Rigid Oscillating Belt and Spindle Sander.
If you're in the market for a new belt or spindle sander, you won't want to miss this video!

Flyndogg,
It's time to get a shop cat. We had a Chihuahua that could run down mice. Our Heinz 57 supposedly has Harrier blood, when she was younger caught squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and mice. So, maybe you need a shop dogg named Flyn.
Thank you for the Rigid recommendation. It says a lot when you go back to buy the same tool a second time.
Have a great holiday season.
Bob
Thanks so much Robert! You have a great holiday season as well! I did have 3 shop cats this summer and they all left for better things! :) My dog, seems to like to play with the mice more than get rid of them! Thanks so much for watching!
Mine is a Bauer from Harbor Freight. I think the layout for the accessory storage is a little nicer on the Ridgid. The Ridgid has all the throat plates and washers stacked together right in the front. The Bauer stores them spread out around the edges. Not a deal breaker, but more convenient to find the right one you want on the Ridgid.
The Ridgid also has the LSA that all their power tools do, so that's an added value.
On the other hand, the Bauer cost $100 less at its base price. However, no one should ever be paying full price at Harbor Freight. Pretty sure I got the Bauer a couple of years ago for ~$150, maybe $160.
Thank you so much for sharing! Someone else mentioned the bauer as well! I had no idea that they made a similar sander. I wish I would have seen that prior to making this purchase. I would love to see how they work. especially if they are $100 cheaper! Thanks for sharing and watching!
Great video definitely a great sander I’ve had mine for about two years and love it. Thanks again for sharing. Once again Merry Christmas to you and your family and Happy New Year 🎊🎊🍾
Awesome Jim! I love it as well! As long as I don’t freak out again, I hope this one will last me for just as long! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well!
Bryan I picked up the Ridgid oscillating belt sander from Direct Tools on President Day sale earlier this year I hate to tell you I paid $174.00 with free shipping from Fed Ex is how they ship it was a blemished item not reconditioned in what Direct Tools sells Ryobi ,Ridgid,an Milwaukee. Along with the same warranty they are a verified dealer for all these tool brands! Thanks for another great video Cuz!
Son of a gun! What a great deal michael! I'm going to have to do some direct tools deeping sometime soon. I'm not real familiar with that website. I think I've checked it out a couple of times, but if you can get deals like that, I'm definitely going to have to see it! Thanks for sharing and watching!
I purchased the wen spindle sander for $78.00 in December 2021. It is great. Especially at that price! Merry Holidays!
Oh man! That is a FANTASTIC deal! Great find. Thanks so much for watching and Merry Holidays to you as well!
I bought the WEN 6524 belt/spindle sander for under $200, and it's the exact same as the Ridgid. It also comes with belts of various grits and spindles of various grits and diameters. The WEN comes with all the same accessories.
The base is a lot smaller and that is a big deal in many cases.
That's great to hear jay! That was one that I almost pulled the trigger on. I think the only difference is like shayne said the base. That was the only reason I chose the rigid. The wen does sound like and excellent option!
Looks like you created a new Random Orbit model of the Ridgid. Ouch. Have to say - one of the best tools I've used. and also functional in taking off your nails really quick if you aren't watching.
Haha! I would tend to agree with you, That old sander orbits about as randomly as possible! :). Thanks so much for watching scaryfriend1. Love this tool.
I'm jealous, not because of your new rigid spindle sander but because your in a cozy warm shop this winter lol. But the shop looks really good. Nice layout.
The rigid spindle sander has been around for a long time and it's really packed with features. Great video 😊
Thanks so much Buffy! I am so grateful to have this climate controlled shop this year. I am still amazed every time I open the door to my shop and can't see my breath! Thanks so much for watching Buffy!
I love mine so much I bought a second one. One for a permanent belt and one setup with a permanent spindle
That's awesome. I could totally see myself doing something like that if I just had a little more space. Great tool! Thanks for watching Daniel!
Flynn I told you a while back to look at the Triton brand. The Triton has two locking knobs for the tilting table whereas the Ridgid only has one. Otherwise the seem to be the same. Triton TSPST450 3.5A Oscillating Spindle and Belt Sander
Son of a gun I remember that! I think my biggest fear with actually purchasing all of the new sanders was that I knew that the rigid worked for what I needed it too, so I was a little hesitant to wander away. But thanks for reminding me. I wish I would have taken a closer look before pulling the trigger!
I just recently purchased the rigid osolating sander, and I am very pleased. I enjoy your videos Dog! Maybe sometime this spring I will swing by your shop on my way to my brother's. Timothy
Thanks so much Tim! I always enjoy visitors! :).
Bryan - thanks for the good info - I was wondering if the belt feature was worth it. I had a spindle only oscillating sander and almost never used it. It was a capable machine, just never did need to use it too much. The belt aspect looks pretty useful, plus I’m doing different building projects now than before. Keep reviewing! Merry Christmas.
Oh yes Michael! The belt is something that I have the sander set up for almost all the time. I rarely use the spindle sander. In fact for a while there that is why I was so interested in that grizzly as I seem to use the belt more than anything. But alas, I do think it is important to have the spindle as well.
I've had my Rigid for about 15 years...never had a problem! Maybe you should have gotten a shop cat! Thanks for the video!! Blessings!!!
Haha! Too funny, you know I actually had 3 barn cats that I got last year. They all disappeared as soon as it got warm out! :). Blessings to you as well!
I ran in to the same problem recently. The mechanism of the sanding belt broke and no one sells a replacement part NO ONE ! I talked with the people from ridgid and about half a dozen other fidgid vendors same song. They sell every part of this sander except the belt sanding mechanism. So I did what you did and bought a new one.
Oh man! You feel my pain then. Thanks so much for watching bibiyeya!
i have the wen version and it seems comparable for the most part. it works perfect for me
That's great to hear Nathan! That one looks really nice. If I would have started with that one, I'd probably be replacing it with the wen! :). Thanks so much for watching as always!
Excellent review! That’s quite a testimonial when a professional as yourself buys the identical replacement.
I would call myself a professional enthusiast! :). It really is a great tool for the price! Thanks as always for watchign Louis!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Bryan, it’s all relative. Compared to my crafts, YOU are pro!
@@louislandi938 Haha!! Well I'm sure your crafts are amazing. Frankly I think anyone who does anything hand made is amazing!
We play the old guessing game:
I show friends and family my latest project and they all ask:
“What is it?”
@@louislandi938 Haha! That's the greatest when that happens! :)
great vid, mice just caused $ 500 damage to my cars' wiring, but at least I learned about this sanding station.
haha! They are the worst aren't they! I put 3 mouse traps in my shop a few weeks ago, and i've got 2 of them so far. 3 more to go! Thanks for watchign Numinut!
Great video, Bryan! I really wish we could've seen those mice scare you lol. Also, you're almost at 15k subs, thats so awesome. Keep it up!
Thanks so much Samisharif! It's crazy to have so many subs, really grateful. I know, I can't beleive I didn't catch the mice incident! :)
I have had and used the Ridgid sander for several years. I agree with everything said in the video. One word of caution: This is a light duty machine. When I got mine, I used it like I'd used the large stationary belt sanders we had in the Furniture Mill where I had worked several years ago. That is, I pressed the work hard against the belt. After a couple of years of such abuse, I burned out the motor. (It was repaired under Ridgid's LSA free of charge.) I've had the repaired sander for more than 5 years, and it is still going strong. You don't need to baby it, just use a light touch and let the sander do the work.
That is awesome to hear DKWalser! I agree with you on the light duty machine. Sounds like you are using the heck out of it, and it is still able to keep up with a few repairs however! Thanks so much for sharing and your comment makes me feel better about my decision! :)
Plus, it has a lifetime warranty if and when you register it within the time.
Yes! That is very true. I've heard good things about the rigid warranties. Thanks for watching FreheitGalleries!
Great video. You will see the big guys that are covered with green using this machine. I bought one for 70$ missing all the attachments. I need to give ridgid a call to get it up and running.
Oh wow! You got a great deal! It's a great tool! Thanks for watching Shayne!
Most of these combo benchtop sanders are made in the same Taiwan factory. Note, all except one have the same amperage motor. Therefore, the nearly identical WEN unit is the wise buy saving as much as $100.00!
Interesting! Thanks for sharing rcrogers! I feel like that is what a lot of tool companies are doing. Many of the tools I've taken a look almost seem identical with just the brand beign different. Thanks for watching!
Look at the Grizzly spindle sander. I think it's under $200.
One thing to look for in these tools is an induction motor rather than a universal motor. If the specs say 2000 RPM, it's a universal motor. If it's 1725 RPM, it's an induction motor. It is important.
You know I did look at that grizzly and the only thing that steered me away from it was the fact that I have experience with the rigid and the table was larger on the rigid. Thanks for sharing the information on the motor. Now I curious to see what the rigid has. Thanks for watching and sharing kwilliams!
And you can always turn the sandpaper over to get more usage out of it
Excellent excellent point Frank! That is something that I should have mentioned. I didn't realize that until after about a year of having this sander and when I finally realized it I was like duh! :)
I bought mine from Amazon, and Ridgid refused to warranty it. They said I didn't buy it from an authorized retailer and that Home Depot was at the time pretty much the only authorized retailer.
Really, that is good to know. I was going to buy mine from amazon when I bought it and realized it was also more expensive on there. I ended up purchasing mine from Home Depot as well. Thank you for sharing this very useful information Charles!
Surprised to see these are available again... They introduced a new model with an open frame and slightly bigger motor... both the same price .. wondering why both are still around, and why you didn't try the newer model?
I saw that newer model, however it wasn't available at the home center where I bought it. Probably would have checked it out, but it appears they only have the version I showed in the video. I'd love to check out that modle. Thanks so much for watching Crzyworm!
I use my Ridgid sander all the time. At least 10 years. I never use the stop bracket either.
Great to know. I had mine for about 5 years, and loved it. Really a quality tool for the price! Have a great New Year Ken!
Several in the comments have mentioned that they have and like the smaller, less expensive, clones of the Ridgid sander. The Wen, Bauer, Grizzly, etc., versions can be a nice addition to a shop. However, if you're trying to decide whether to buy the original (Ridgid) or one of the smaller clones, do not underestimate the value that Ridgid's larger table can provide. For example, say you're edge sanding a cabinet door. You'll appreciate the extra support Ridgid's larger table will give you in that kind of work. Or, say you're sanding to a line the contours of long, narrow parts of a dresser mirror frame, you'll appreciate the extra support Ridgid's larger table provides with that kind of work, too.
Does this mean you should buy the larger Ridgid instead of one of the smaller rivals? No. It depends on the type of work you do. If you're making small boxes and similarly sized items, the smaller sanders might be a better choice. But, if you do make larger items, consider carefully the advantages of a larger table. For the kind of work I do, I'm glad I have the Ridgid.
Excellent point DKWalser! That larger table is probably the single most reason why I went with rigid vs some of the other clones. Thanks again for sharing!
Wen makes an oscillating belt and spindle sander combo for $202 at the orange box store.
Oh nice, the one near me doesn't carry any Wen Products. They do online but not inshore. That is a great alternative. The only thing I like about rigid a little more than the wen is the larger table. But you are 100% correct that Wen looks really nice! Thanks for watching Jelias!
The Ridgid is a great machine. The WEN is equally comparable, just $100 less.
Have a Merry Christmas, Bryan!!
🎄 🎅 🦌 🛷
I would really like to check that Wen out Looks like a great machine. A little smaller table but looks really nice. Merry Christmas to you as well Damon! :)
I've got a table top belt/disc sander but I'm still planning on getting this one too. I could really use the smaller spindles at times. Getting tired of using a dowel with a piece of sandpaper glued on it to sand any thing a bit smaller!
Wonder how it would do on a flip top stand. I hope I don't have to make a place to store the various pieces before I turn it upside down to use the other sander!
Maybe I'll just sell the one I have and go all in with the Ridgid!
Like the video, only thing that would have been better would have been hearing you scream like a girl when the mice came flying out of the machine (or any creative language you happened to utter LOL!!!)
Happy to see your growing and hope you & your family have a wonderful Christmas holiday!
This tool seems to be the most seen tool on a flip-top stand. However, you will need to store the accessories somewhere else as they will fall out of their storage areas when you flip it upside down.
@@corwind3888 That's what I was thinking. Don't recall seeing anyone mention it on their videos. Guess I know what I'll be watching over the holidays when it's quiet enough around the house!
Thanks so much Jim! I think this would be a great tool to add as a flip top, but just like the other two comments mentioned you would definitely have to find a place to store those accessories. I tend to knudge them off sometimes even in the upright position! :) Happy holidays and best of luck to you!
I want one. But, alas, no room.
I hear you, that used to be my problem too. Thanks as always for watching Paul!
👍👍
Thanks for watching! :)
Dogg, man, Santa is still loading his sleigh...you never know. Now you know why you shouldn't have been spending all that cash on the nickel and dime tools over the year. Speaking of safety...get a chance to see Stumpy Nubs cut his tendons yet? Look at you being a spokesperson...you may have to give up woodworking to become a voice over actor. Dude! Just so you know, we only watched an unboxing video because it was you doing it; otherwise we would of hit the fast forward. It's too bad Woodpecker doesn't make a sander. Merry Christmas Dogg, man!
I love it! We should take bets on what woodpeckers would charge for a sander like this. I bet it would be $1,500. It would probably be the best sander ever made, with all sorts of bells and whistles but man, would it be pricy!:) Hope you had a great christmas and are measuring the hell out of eveyrthing around you with your new paolini!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Dogg, man, indeed I am, but I am here to report that not everything is measuring up. Hey, speaking of the Paolini, have you explained how to use the vertical scale in one of your videos. Somehow, my Paolini came wrapped beautifully, but without any instructions. I tried and failed to get it to stand up (at my age, that's not unusual). Enjoy the rest of the Christmastide.
Figures they wouldn't leave any insturctions! I had a couple of snippits here and there over the last year withe the paolini on its side to use that little side scale, but I'm guessing that is a feature you will never use. I know I don't.
Is there a video of the mice jumping out?😂😂😂
Oh man I wish I did! Would have been classic! :)
I have the one from Harbor freight I like it a lot and it is a lot cheaper than the rigid 1.
Oh nice! I’ll have to check that one out. Didn’t realize HF had one too! Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching Douglas!
I am not a fan of mice, but rats will really get me to squeal like a little girl. That Rigid seems pretty sharp, even sharper at the price. So what are you going to spend that $800 you saved on?Happy Holidays!
Haha! I never thought of it that way! I actually did just spend about that much on another tool a couple of weeks ago. Now that I think about it, that is probably why I didn't pend that much on the sander! :) Thanks for watching Pat!
Terriers will get them rodents! I had a rat terrier who was a love-bug to people and a killer to vermin.
That's awesome! :). I put Layla (my white shepard) in there for a bit and all she did was mouth the mouse!
I have a Rigid machine I bought for parts it was missing the safety lock and the belt assembly. You can have it if you want it free! I just went to my other garage and dug it out and have pictures as well. Edited I sent you a message on facebook
Oh you are too kind Keith, since I already have the new one and it all set up, I've already thrown away my old one (I also kept most of the parts for back up as well). Great minds think alike! Thanks for watching!
I think the mice were new FlynnDogg fans!
Even if you don't consider the price point i don't think you can beat the Rigid for what you get. All of the others fail to include all of the features you get with the Rigid. Its on my wish list
The only thing I wish was different is the spindle rod. It would be awesome if it could store below the table so you could build the sander into a bench top and the metal rod not be in the way of utilizing the flat surface. like you see contractor saws built into benches if that makes sense. Still an awesome sander that cant be beat. Even the mice love it! 🐁 🪤
Haha! I love it, Who knew I had mice fans! :) You know I never thought about that, It's too bad you can't easily detach the rod from the machine for storage etc. Great point! Really happy with my purchase, thanks for watching as always seanbrotherton!
