    Separately I’d like to add another point/thought, I’m a hobbyist, my work requires me to be away min 4 days a week, and I’m a father, I don’t want to spend my hobby time compensating for cheap tools with extra set up time. Your time also has value to you, and the cost of a tool sometimes is cheap when you compare them

    I am a hobbyist looking to go full time. Using my current job to fund getting a shop together. After a LOT of debate I got the Festool CTL Midi vac and a few hours ago pulled the trigger on the Festool Tracksaw after about a month of trying to convince myself the Ryobi would serve me just as well. As a firm believer in "buy once, cry once", just using the vac sold me on the quality and small quality of life features that Festool offers. Fully agree on your take here, especially with products that require good dust extraction. Thanks for the great comparison

    • @BradyHommel
      @BradyHommel  Před rokem +6

      I have transitioned to a "buy once cry once" philosophy as well. I have wasted to much time and money on cheap tools. And in the long run some of them even cost you more. Best of luck on your journey to go full time man! That's exactly what I did was use my day job to slowly but steadily get there. Thanks for your comment!

    I started getting some Festool about a year ago and I'm hooked! I am a hobbyist and I think it's just as important to get good tools as a hobbyist as it is as a professional. As you said, it actually makes the woodworking more enjoyable. I know they're expensive, but I have no regrets. I really enjoy them. I have way more than I though I would have!

    Completely understand. I told myself for years that there was no way that I would drink the green koolaid. About 6 months ago I got the Domino. That lead to the CT26 and then the ETS125 and Rotex sanders. Found a great deal, so just brought home the OF1400 router today. It's a slippery slope my friend. - Chris

    I bought the Domino three years ago and fell in love with it. In the past eight months, I got the updated TS 55 and the MFT 3. I just picked up the ETS 125 and CT 15 a few days ago. The kool-aid is delicious. It blew my mind, and still does, that the dust extractor picks up all the dust from sanding. Even as a hobbyist, Festool is worth it if you can swing it. My projects move along faster and with less frustration overall.

I didn’t understand Festool until I realized that in my post firefighter retirement business of handyman and contractor I was going to need primo dust collection inside of client homes. We’ve all done a little sheetrock work and chased dust forever it seems like. Night their extractor and a couple of sanders…..and Oh My Goodness! You cannot understand until you’ve used their system for just a little bit. Expensive as heck! But so worth it! You’re not buying a tool….you’re buying a system. A really GREAT system.😎

    Same on my side. All started out with the Domino. After that i invested in the CTL26 with the systainer cyclone (which is on of my absolute favourits now). I think appart from the quality of the machines itself i would say the most benefitial point on festool is clearly the system by itself. Lock the hose in place plug-it connector on and everything runs. No adapters needed, no cables laying arround. Makes work really running much more smoothly.
    For 18v I‘m also still on milwaukee (drill, impact, etc) but everything which is in combination with dust extraction and precision my go to is clearly Festool. 😍

Im 75 with COPD and have for 20 years been using Festool with their extractors and that has allowed me to continue my woodworking projects (Im a hobbyist) to this day. Dust collection is absolutely necessary including masks. Im happy when I see someone your age going for it and not necessarily for the same reason that I did but Festool extractors with their tools will save your lungs for the worst dust you can be exposed to. First time on your site and like it very much. Ill be following you now and hoping to learn from you. The flattening setup you use is great. Thanks for sharing.

    Coming from a large production wood shop I didn't even realize these where top tier, we have probably 30+ festool sanders, vacs and other festool products, but by far my favorite is there routers . After cutting off my left thumb with a dewalt trim router and having multiple surgeries the festool trim routers just feel safer for me to use the build quality and the user ergonomics of it all play into it. I will most likely never use a trim router other than festool for the rest of my life because of that I could care less about the price if its going to mean a safer tool to use.

    I'm a hobby woodworker mainly making my own custom furniture and doing a bit of home renovation on my timber home. I needed a rip cut saw and learned about track saws. I watched a ton of YT videos about various track saws. For me, safety always comes first and the Festool track saw was the safest by far and that's how I got my first ( and only so far) Festool tool. It's a beautiful piece to work with. I then started looking for a miter saw to add to my arsenal and would have bitten down on the Festool Kapex if it had had a light and laser built in. But those had to be purchased separately. This is when I bought a Makita instead. I agree with you that, especially if you are a pro, and even if you are just a hobbyist, an effective, easy to use tool makes all the difference in terms of speed and efficiency, not to mention the joy of using a great tool. That's when I will splash out the extra dollars.

    Brad, I am with you on Festool. Same story...way to much money...until you get something Festool. Night and day difference in quality. Started with a sander (same one you showed) because my Dewalt finally died (after years of faithful service, very sad). A new one was like $60 bucks. I went to a wood show a decided to try the Festool sander. Everyone was raving about Festool stuff. $360 bucks hurt, but the first time I used it, I realized it was a game changer. Now I have 3 sanders and a Domino. If you don't have the 6 inch sander, I would highly recomend it.

  • @coffeesleeves

    I just started buying power tools and chose to go with mostly Dewalt tools... but as I watch more videos and use my tools, the more I can appreciate the "detail" when I see folks using Festool products. Over time, I find its the small things, the minor details that can make a night and day difference when using the tool. As I get more into it and spend more time as a hobby, I'll consider upgrading my sander first.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was in the same position and now have several systainers full of Festool tools. There is something to be said for a high quality tool that just works well.
    One thing I would recommend. I have the same sander as you. You can replace the sanding pad with the 150mm model and get a larger format sander for little money. The body is basically the same and the sanding pads are something like $50. A very worthwhile upgrade.

    • @BradyHommel
      @BradyHommel  Před rokem

    • @pieces94

      @@BradyHommel Sanding is so much faster with the 6” pad. Material removal is quicker and the paper lasts longer. I had always read about the 33% improvement going from 5” to 6” but was skeptical, until I tried it myself.
      The 5” ETS EC is the 6” sanding pad is perfect for me. You have the 5” sander for styles and rails then can switch to the 6” for panels and cabinets. It’s no trouble switching the pads, just one screw.

    I'm just a hobby man and purchased the mini vac then the track saw and this time last year, a MFT. After this, I damaged my right then left shoulders doing unrelated things and today, used the table for the first time and with the Festool clamps, it all worked a treat. I'm retired and planned to do so many things the last twelve months but not to be but I'm hoping to get into it all this year. Yes their super expensive and that's me saying that after buying a lot of Bosch, but if you can afford something better than say Ryobi, Dewalt etc, then do yourself a treat and pay the extra as they are worth the additional price.

    I like your presentation and I basically agree with what you’re saying. I thought Festool was WAY too expensive. But after watching a variety of CZcams woodworking videos I decided it would make good sense to get the Festool CT36 dust extraction system and a sander. That made sense for me, especially from a health standpoint. It does seem to be superior and most everybody who has one says they are great. I am more than happy with it. it’s probably worth every penny I paid as it does a superior job. However I have not gone with any other Festool items at this time. In time I may switch over to some but I’m not a high-end professional woodworker anyway. I also saw no value in getting a track saw, but for the same reason, dust control, I have ordered the Makita and plan to use the Festool CT36. The rest may come - time will tell. Thanks for your good video.

      Mirka is quite popular for just sanding but going festool means more kit available. Tracksaw very good in tight spaces, no dust element means less brushing table and work piece off and more working. Festool Bluetooth brings automatic extractor operation. Simple and effective blade system with a lower 1.8 kerf, fast blade change. Lots of features I think it's probably not worth researching one because you will end up buying it

I'm in the market for a good sander and have been considering the 3m sander, but after what you said about how Festool works as a system and the simplicity of using the Festool vacuum with the other tools you have it got me to thinking maybe that's the way I should go. Really appreciate you explaining how you took the plunge and purchased these, and I may be following in your footsteps.

      I have heard good things about the 3m sander as well. I have never tried one but I do not think I would be a fan of the power switch being on top of the sander the way it is. I like the button on the festool. Also yes the way the sander, domino and track saw all plug right into the dust extractor was a huge selling point for me. It is awesome. And the dust collection is amazing. Thank you for your comment!

    • @DKWalser
      @DKWalser Před rokem

      Festool makes some great sanders and they work very well with any of the Festool dust extractors. But, the 3M sander/dust extractor combo is actually better (for some types of uses). 3M has been making pneumatic sanders used in industry, auto body shops, and other commercial settings for decades. In such settings, pneumatic sanders are often preferred because they are lighter weight and are smaller, making them easier to use for long periods and also making them more maneuverable. For example, while I was in college, I worked at a furniture mill. Some of our crew did nothing but finish sand the furniture before it was stained and lacquered. They used a 3M random orbital pneumatic sander for hours at a time -- without their hands and arms becoming numb from the vibration or overly tired from the weight of the sander. I understand that many are unsure about using a sander with a paddle switch. Believe me, once you've gotten used to it, you'll like it. If you were to sand for hours at a streatch, you'd love it. The paddle switch becomes very intuitive to use, and the sander almost becomes an extension of your arm.
      3M (and Mirka before them) has done a good job of making an electric sander that has most of the advantages of pneumatics. When I first got into woodworking as a hobby, I thought I'd equip my shop with air tools -- pneumatic sanders, drills, and screw guns. By comparison, their electric counter-parts felt heavy, bulky, and clumsy to my hands. Then, I saw how much a compressor that would power these air-hungry tools cost, and went electric! My electric tools -- particularly the cordless ones -- still feel heavy and bulky. But, they have served me well. The Festool, while approaching the smoothness of a quality pneumatic sander, still feels bulky and top-heavy in my hand. The 3M sanders feel almost as good as their slightly more compact pneumatic cousins.
      Having said that, I won't be buying a 3M sander (or a Festool or Mirka) any time soon. I spend most of my shop time at the lathe, so I don't use a 5" or 6" random orbital sander all that often. But, if I were to return to furniture making or the making of kitchen cabinets where, once the pieces are assembled, the final sanding involves a lot of vertical surfaces, I would be buying the 3M sander and its matching dust extractor. On the other hand, if I were doing a lot of finish carpentry, which involves sanding a lot of trim, I'd buy the Festool. Not because the Festool is a better sander for those purposes, but because it integrates better within the Festool system. That integration would be more important on multiple job sites where I would be bringing in a number of different tools. With Festool, I could use the same power cord and vac hose for each tool. With the 3M, I would need to unplug each new powertool from the 3M extractor whenever I switched from one tool to the next.
      Just the thoughts of someone who used to earn a living with these types of tools but now just uses them for fun.

    I’m literally living your life in parallel. I started with a domino, then the sander. I’m also currently a Kapex in and eyeing up the dust extractor. It’s a slippery slope, but a slope that goes all downhill to a good place. The quality of the tools compared to the tools they replaced is as marked as you say. It’s truly a case of getting what you pay for. The sander especially is like night and day compared to the DeWalt it replaced. Many will scoff at you saying sanding is one of your favourite things now. I wouldn’t go that far myself but I spend a lot less time sanding now than I used to and worth the extra money alone…. Glad I’m not alone in the “madness”

    I'm just a hobbyist but have several Festools, track saw, four (I think) sanders, Domino, jig saw, two routers (OF1010 and OF1400), and Kapex. My first was the track saw. At the time there were only one or two competitors and they weren't a lot cheaper. I loved the thing so bought a sander. I'd had a dozen cheap sanders, all more aggravation than they were worth. The Festool was a dream. I was hooked.
    The only issue I've had is with the routers. Each has different accessories. I can see why, maybe. There has to be a way of integrating things. There are other odd-ball issues, like the dust port on the OF1010. It's oblong so the extractor hose has to be squished to get it onto the port. It's not that easy. I bought an adapter from Etsy to make this easier but it shouldn't be needed.
    BTW, I was just using both routers tonight. Each set up with a different bit and template ring. One is set for hogging out a dado and the other for the last 1/16th inch to trim any fuzz or chips.
    I can't count the number of tools I've replaced because they were no longer what I needed. Replacing tools can be more expensive than buying right the first time. I firmly believe in the "cry once" theory of tool purchasing. Woodworking is my only vice so I got hooked on Festool. I've replaced so many tools that they no longer need to be justified. My wife calls them "green tools" and Woodpeckers "red tools")

    Love the TS55 & the MFT/3 combination. But you'll have to pry my PC890 router from my cold dead hands. There is nothing like the LR32 system out there and I use it. A base adapter, on the plunge base for the PC890 and it fits the guide plate for the LR32 guide rail. The PC890 and my PC 5" orbital sander fit my 27mm hose for my Craftsman 5 hp dust collector. No dust or chunks from any of those tools. I cut the power cables short on all my tools so I can use my Festool compatible dust hose and zip tied power cable, on all of my power tools. This plugs into a automatic i-VAC to turn on the dust collector.
    Even though I've fond work arounds to using some festools, I still have them on my dream list OF1400, DF500, and a CT26 are certainly DROOL worthy. And I can't wait for the day I can replace my table saw and make my shop almost dust free, TSK 80 when they get to the US.

    • @patmx5

      @@BradyHommel Love it. Bought it in 2013 to do flooring in my home renovation. It's nice and solid, runs smoothly and (like most of their stuff) excels at dust collection. The sliding mechanism is quite robust, the angle settings of the table are easily adjusted and lock in place securely, and the tilt adjustment of the saw is very fast and easy, with the adjustment handle at the front of the saw on the end of the right hand slide rail and the scale is large and easy to read.
      I've seen other CZcamsrs trying it gripe about the interlock/trigger system and the vertical orientation of the grip, but as it's the only miter saw I've ever owned its operation has become natural to me - squeeze trigger to release the pivot lock and lower the blade, squeeze trigger _and_ press button with thumb to turn on the saw. Someone coming to it from a saw with a horizontal handle might at first feel awkward using it, but I'd think that would soon pass. I normally use the laser (it projects the cutting lines on both sides of the blade), so don't normally need to lower the stopped saw to index the cut to begin with.
      Fitted with a non ferrous blade, I've used it to easily and accurately cut aluminum stock, too.

    Just putting it out there, with the sanders the 125 vs 150 (5” vs 6”) the extra inch equates to an additional 30% surface area, which can be a big reduction in work time.
    Whilst I prefer the 5” size sanders I personally run an ets 150 for panels main work, and an rtsc 140 corners and mobility. The Wen vs Festool track saw hit different. I've used both, and both have the same stupid issue - the tracks. I have to use an 8' level on it's side to line up the tracks to ensure they are straight. If they are off, even a 1/16 or smaller, that translates to like 1/8 or 1/4 over many feet (in my case 8-10 foot tables). I will say the Wen, while great for the price isn't super great for glue joint rips (when you rip one side, another, then put the two together and rip them together). I used a machinist square and no matter what, always off a little bit like .003. Same with Festool.
    I only have experience with Festool tracksaw, nothing else. The domino I am eyeballing though because I find myself needing to do mortice and tenon more and more and I'm kinda wanting it now.
    I secretly love sanding now. Why? I have the BOSCH ROS20VSC, and it's a 5". Get the hook and loop pad protector thingy (official name btw). I use the 3m 700 series sanding discs on the finish stuff and like 40-120 using gator discs on the really rough stuff and it's great. What makes it great is once you have the right hose to suck the dust, it's magic. Toss in my air pods and ear protection set and I get to zone out. I am looking at the new 3m sander and possibly, maybe a festool but the only tool I really need from them is the Domino. I fear that day, because I feel like I'll want everything else.
