Hey brother, I don’t know why but your name looks so damn familiar. I was a DS from 2012-2015 on Benning. C Co 1-50. Did a short stint as a PSG in A Co 1-15 after, before they shut the BDE down. Moved up to N GA to be a ROTC instructor at UNG afterwards. I actually just retired a couple weeks ago and now live in Indiana. 👊🏼👊🏼
Woodworkers are a funny lot sometimes. The shop is organized to the max but there is no casing around the door. Admittedly, I would do something like that.

As an electrical contractor, I can attest to this characteristic not being specific to woodworkers… My shop panel cover hasn’t been reattached since I took it off in 2019, and the receptacles I added 8-10 months ago still don’t have plate covers. Door/drawer fronts on the work tables are all perfect, though. 😏😂😂

I have a few of the items you discussed in your video, but also see where every other tool would be an excellent asset to a semi-beginner journey into fine woodworking. While you have nearly all gold standard products in your shop that can be somewhat out of reach to many out there, I certainly cannot hold that against you where others can and often do. If I had the cash allocation for this full time, I would certainly do the same. If a tool costs more and either does better or saves time, BUY IT. Out of all the wood-tubers, I enjoy your content the most, so thank you for your excellent content and we all look forward to much more in the future.

Easy to confuse height and width on gauging blocks. Check out your use of the 3/4”; hope it’s 3/4” tall, too!!

100% agree with you on that pancake compressor issue. I make sure i have my headphones on before turning that on. If i needed it more often, id definitely look for a replacement.
Completely agree on both the setup blocks (including the super handy 1-2-3 block many come with) and the Jessem table saw stock guides. Both worth their weight in gold IMHO. I would also highly recommend the Jessem router stock guides as well.
Tip... you can buy an extra mount rail from Jessem for the table saw stock guides at a very reasonable cost (

I need a full tank of air all the time and prefer not to wait for it to fill just so I can do a 10 second blast. So I have a huge noisy compressor in my garage with copper lines running to my basement workshop. I can’t hear it run in the shop so noise is no issue. What can be an issue is leakage that can occur where the copper joins the rubber air hose. I overcame this with a valve in my workshop at the end of the copper but before the air hose. I lose virtually no air when not in use. Always have a full tank ready and waiting for me not the other way round. This is a good solution for my application where I can go days without needing air.

I hope to one day have a space to do some real woodworking and I really appreciate your insightfulness and education. I would love some day to have a shop even 5/8 as good as yours. You could have made the clamp rack from wood for like 1/4 of the cost of the Woodpecker clamp rack...but I guess if I had your money than no big deal
100% agree on the Jessem Stock guides. I hesitated on the cost, but waited until they went on sale at Woodcraft, which seems to be at least once a year. Get these if they are in your budget, and you will be safer and make better cuts instantly. This and the Gripper are essential in my opinion.

Green lasers actually provide better contrast regardless of lighting conditions, unlike red lasers. Green is the way to go.

makita also makes some quiet air compressors. I had the porter cable pancake and like you hated the noise.
replaced it and now use it more often because I don't annoy my neighbours.

I love my Jessem stock guides and I agree with you on the push block as well. Unfortunately, I’m in the time of year where I’m banned from buying my own tools, but after Christmas, I’ll start looking at some of these that I don’t have.

For those who read comments, Harbor Freight's Ultra Quiet Fortress compressor is pretty good. I only use it for small brads, pumping up car tires, and mostly blowing off dust. I don't need it for framing guns/nailers. So I went with HF and haven't regretted it. For DIY'ers, it's a great option.
This BF, rigid has its compressor on sale with 3 different nailers bundle for $200. Too bad I already have a compressor and one of those nailers. That would’ve been a good addition.

Set up blocks are wonderful--so long as you put them away immediately after using them! Bent's shop is very high end. Most of us aren't in the financial neighborhood where Festool, Incra, Jessm, Woodpecker are our go-to tools. There are alternatives--mostly DIY jigs that can perform the same functions for a whole lot less money. Incidentally, I sprang for a Woodpeckter router table. The assembly directions were awful and the plunge adjustment stick was hard to use/control and the cam wore out quickly. I replaced the plunger with another brand.
"I have a lot of push sticks" having not used one for the dangerous previous cut/clip.
I use the jessem table saw guides also. Only issue I have with them is trying to use a push stick with narrower pieces. Something around 2-3 inches wide.
Which push stick do you use for narrow pieces when using the guides.
A lot of workshops are pristine environments & that’s alright but some items that work well are super expensive. I do like the Jessum rollers that feed the material into the fence but have they got a system for heavy duty fences that have no tracks on them ?
iGaging blocks- go the whole hog and get gauge blocks. Way more accurate.
Stock guide- these are great- I made myself sets for both table saw and router. But I have side rollers for the router too.
Gripper- do not reference the fence with them- the stock should do that.
For the air compressor On/Off you could just replace that outlet with a relatively inexpensive ($20) 20 amp switch/outlet combo.

I have an older iGauging setup block set that comes in an all plastic box instead of box with foam - I would avoid this version. I have multiple block sets in English and Metric now and the old plastic box is the biggest pain to put away.
The JessEm Guides are so good. when I started using them my rip cuts became so much straighter and kickback is largely non-existent. I will still frequently use a magnetic featherboard, but it's more of an easy add-on than critical.
I keep a very large variety of push blocks and sticks. As well as the Gripper Smart Hook, I also like the cheaper Milescraft GrabberPLUS which is hefty and has a different drop foot design. The one problem with the Smart Hook design is that they can get stuck up sometimes; the GrabberPLUS can be locked down. I'll switch off based on what I want at the time.

I got side tracked at the end with the sound ratings for the air compressor. Would love to know what the Porter Cable pancake registers at.
For the air compressor switch, I wired a 2 gang box, one of which is an outlet/toggle ( painted the toggle red ) and plugged the air compressor into that. $ 10 vs $40 for the Rockler.

how do i get or find a table saw fence that isn't off completely. the one i have with my table saw is always off just a tiny bit on one side no matter how many times i adjust

I like seeing what pros use, to get ideas and inspiration. But man those router bits are expensive!
Anyways, i just got a new table saw (a cheap one), and the motor is nice but i reckon that with some pushblocks and something like the roller thingy that pushes the board where it should be, i'd get better results. Thanks, i'll look into this, and see if i can 3D print some stuff to save a buck :)

What App are you using for sound level?
Do you find the stock guides lift your incra fence much. Do you tighten the front fence locking screw when you use them?

I went with a Kobalt Quiet Tech... it runs at around 60 decibels. If ya can't find the California Air this is a great alternative that's usually always in stock.
Nice to know about the Kobalt. I also have one from Harbor Frieght - same size, same decibel rating. Not sure abou the CAT or the Kobalt one, but the only downside to the HF one is it's weight. It's very heavy for the size.
Husky (Home depot) also makes a 4.5gal version that is great. I chose it over the the California or Kobalt versions primarily because it goes up to 175psi which makes the tank seem larger.
Will my ETS 125 EQ work with the Edge Sanding Guide or do I need to buy the ETS 125 REQ? Looks like it will work. Thanks.

Great video. However I’ve always been told that using a remote switch with a CAT compressor is not the best idea. It can lead to premature failure of the built-in pressure switch.
I haven’t noticed any issues so far.

I own two California Air Compressors - a 2 gallon and a 20 gallon. Both have the typical drain valve.

The Jessem Stock guides are awesome. I just wanted to point out that you *can* install them on smaller, portable/contractor-style saws, though you might need to jury-rig it a bit. I've got mine installed on a Bosch 4100.

Did you install a sacrificial fence for those to work?

I attached a strip of plywood on the right-hand side of the Bosch 4100's fence (i.e., the non-blade side) with some t-bolts, to make it wide enough to support the Jessem's aluminum track, then bolted the track to the top of the fence as normal. So not exactly a sacrificial fence, but a similar idea. (The Jessem's track is quite long, and I didn't want to cut it down, so it sticks out past the back edge of the saw a bit, but I can still store the saw away without any difficulty.

So from your video 3 yrs. ago I see that you prefer making money from youtube, adsense, affiliate marketing, etc. do you prefer that to making custom furniture. Very instructive video....thanks very much. A potentially dumb, but safety related question. Is it safe to leave your air compressor pressurized for longer periods of time. Say a week, if I am a weekend woodworker whose shop is at a cottage 46 miles away and only gets there on weekends?
I’m sure someone will say it’s really bad but I have forgot that I had mine one or that it had air for long periods of time and never had an issue
You should drain it daily,so that the bottom of the tank doesn’t rot out and explode, is it really that much of a inconvenience.Stay safe and have fun.
If you have a decent air leak of any kind and you might over heat or damage your compressor if it runs 24 hours a day for a week. Something to think about.

Those stock guides cost 1/2 as much as my Dewalt table saw.
That noise level difference is deceiving and typical pancake compressors are rated typically at 90 dB. That's laughable because they are frequently much louder being closer to 95-96 dB. For reference, a difference of 3 dB is considered 2x noisier. So the difference of 12 dB measured here is 4x noisier. That pancake compressor he's talking about would be roughly 22x noisier. That's not an exageration. Add to that the fact that so many workshops have hard, undamped surfaces which would absorb sound, and you can see why noise is such a problem.
Dammit Jason! Stop making these videos. I will never financially recover from all the stuff you recommend that I end up buying because you're right! LOL

I just get tired of watching you tubers say they r for the diy person but yet the shop is overflowing with all the most expensive tools. I mean cmon 230 bucks for one router bit! I don't care if it sliced steak for that price. Will it produce a better cut ,sure! But nothing that can't be cleaned up with a little extra finish work using a conventional flush trim bit. Is enough to justify said tools?

Just an FYI the HFT Fortress Quite air compressor beats the CAT & is built better Cheaper & slightly quitter with a one & two Gallon models from $159 & $189 respectively o you can put the extra $50 in your pocket..
