Guardians of the Galaxy has become one of the most beloved series of comic book movies ever made. The characters in this series, as weird as they are, have become household names and key players in the gargantuan MCU. From their appearances in the two guardians films, the two avengers film, and the upcoming third guardians film, people have fallen in love with these characters. With that being said, how did this band of misfits become so popular? Well we gotta travel back in time to 2014 to look at where it all began. With Guardians of the Galaxy volume 1. All these years later, how has the movie aged? Is the story still powerful? Are the themes still relevant? Knowing where these characters end up, how were their introductions? And what is the legacy of this film? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we are looking at Guardians of the Galaxy, all these years later.
Before we dive deep into the movie itself and all its strengths and weaknesses, I think it’s important to discuss the sheer existence of this movie. Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014 and was the 10th movie in the MCU. All the major characters in this movie make their MCU in this movie. And these characters include a guy who isn’t a superhero, a green chick, a buff gray dude, a talking racoon, and a tree who only says I am groot. None of these characters had prior introductions in the mcu, this was their first movie. The MCU at this point had only really been about Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. People forget about the hulk movie, and the avengers movie was really about them. While superhero movies weren’t at their peak yet, they were still popular enough to put people in the seats. Nowadays viewers are used to these crazy movies and shows like Ant-Man and the Wasp, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Wandavision, and plenty of others. Back then the strangest MCU project we got was Thor, and he spent the majority of his first two movies on earth. Mind you these two “weird movies” were two of the weaker MCU movies at the time, especially the dark world. This movie was in early production sometime in 2011 with it being officially announced in mid 2012. Keep in mind in 2011, the MCU wasn’t this juggernaut. It wasn’t until 2012 when the avengers came out that this franchise became popular. So Kevin Feige thought of making this movie before any of the MCU movies made a billion dollars. So in 2012 when this movie was announced, I would argue that the marvel brand wasn’t that strong yet, but the main trio of the avengers were strong. So going into 2014, guardians of the galaxy had very little going for it. How were you going to adapt all these weird characters onto the big screen for audiences to fall in love with? Well in order to make a weird movie successful you need a weird dude in charge, so marvel hired James Gunn as lead writer and director. His filmography at that point included a horror movie called Slither (2006), a fun superhero comedy in Super (2010), and he wrote the two live action Scooby Doo movies. And if you’ve watched those scooby doo movies, they’re hilarious. Kevin Feige put his trust in this weird director to adapt one of the weirdest marvel comic stories. Of course Guardians of the Galaxy became a huge success. But I wanted to take this time to emphasize how huge of a risk this movie was. People love to say the MCU plays things safe, but the sheer existence of this movie is the exact opposite of safe. And Kevin Feige and the executives at Marvel deserve massive credit for taking this risk.
Let’s begin by looking at the main character of the movie, Star Lord aka Peter Quill. But before we do that, in typical Gold Man fashion lets ask ourselves what is Guardians of the Galaxy about? No it’s not about getting the power stone. I would argue Guardians of the Galaxy is about two things that are heavily intertwined: how people deal with loss, and how people learn to share their pain. - Zábava
The guardians and black panther movies are the only mcu movies that feel like the directors got to fulfill there vision. Like the studio let them do what they want.
A few others, but these two definitely
Definitely not
Taika Waititi and Ragnarok
Black panther sucks

Oftentimes I feel that most Marvel movies aren’t really rewatchable for me personally, but the first Guardians of the Galaxy is an exception to that! It’s so entertaining and fun and it feels like they actually cared about the movie they were making.
Plus, the music really makes this movie top tier
I totally agree
a year before gotg 1 came out, I lost my mom to cancer, and I was just a little older than what young Peter was at the start. at the time, I had zero real interest in the movie. I might have seen a trailer or two but it wasn't something I was eager to see (dc guy not marvel) but my friends were all going so I went as well. Knowing nothing, when it started, it hurt a lot. I loved the movie in the end, but I never really thought to much about it at the time until later. Hell this video in particular made me realize just how similar our experiences were, only for Peter is was being unable to hold her hand, and for me it was being unable to barely say "I love you" and its definitely something that comes back and haunts me, especially whenever some big milestone comes around like graduation or something. Movie means a lot to me and its something me and my family come back to almost every year (although thats more just because we are watching it with someone and it just so happens to be a year after the last time we did it), and I always enjoy rewatching it again. Never feels like a chore, and theres not a lot of movies I have rewatched (especially that many times) since I was a little kid just watching Toy Story in the car. Dad refers to it as a classic and I couldn't agree more. it will always be one of my favorite movies. When the sequel came out, Gunn became one of my favorite directors and I can't wait for the third and for his Superman movie which I know will probably be my favorite movie he ever does
I can’t imagine how you feel. But in a way you sharing this is like Peter sharing his pain with the rest of the guardians. Thank you for sharing this story, im so glad to hear how much guardians means to you
2014 had the 2 best movies of the MCU for me, Winter Solider & Guardians. Two completely different kinds of movies yet they're both fantastic!
One movie is a serious & grounded thriller movie while the other is a fun scifi cosmic adventure movie.
2014 is my favorite year of mcu movie releas because these 2 are still my fav mcu movie.
X-men dopf also came out that year.
@@bashengatheblackmanta7003 oh course I can't believe I forgot my favourite X-Men film too! Truly the best variety of films
Just rewatched vol. 1 last night, planning on rewatching vol 2. next, it's amazing how well the first film holds up almost a decade later. And watching it after vol. 3 just makes it an even better movie in retrospect.
Still one of my top favorite movies of all time. I could watch this movie over and over again. The highs are so good
So good!
Great movie and the best of the trilogy (at least until Guardians 3). These characters have imo the best family dynamic in the whole MCU.
Agreed!
I agree! I really love this movie! The holiday special is great too because cosmo is best girl.
I'm one of those who have grown tired of all the super hero movies, they get kinda repetitive after a while. But Guardians Of The Galaxy is the exception and I loved both 1 and 2. The main characters are flawed but loveable, a bunch of traumatized outcasts who become a found family. It just speaks to me more than all the other MCU and DC movies.
I personally thought the 2021 game by Eidos Montreal did an even better job at showing the Guardians’ trauma than the movies did. I get it’s unfair to compare a 30 hour game to a 2 hour movie. But it is basically the ultimate guardians experience, it expands on the trauma of every member. Especially Drax.
What makes it good is that it nails “show, don’t tell”. You feel even more for Drax. Because they actually show is family.
If anyone loves the guardians, and hasn’t played it yet. Please check it out. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, on the same level as Spider-Man PS4
Still one of the best films of 2014
Definitely!
One of my favorite MCU films as well! Also fancy seeing you here. 😂😂
Wait... That's 9 years ago.. I'm getting old 😢
Gotta say, i love your thumbnails and videoformat. Its so enticing i need to click on it, and watch it all the way trough. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that! I love your profile pic btw, McLovin!
Just a classic film that just happens to be in the Mcu. Even if the mcu wasn't a thing this film would still hold up just as well. Great video man
Iron Man 1 had to build a franchise within a single movie, with a main character that no one liked, an actor who no one else trusted, a script with one foot still in the gleam of the writer's eye and barely anyone willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. GOTG 1 had to introduce an entirely new cast of characters to an established property that seemed to defy all of that property's apparent positives and sell itself to the people that had decided on those standards. Spiderman: Homecoming had to deal with all that and an entire different Fandom putting it under the magnifying glass with the complete confidence that it would fail to stand up to the Raimi films while using a villain that got the same reaction from audiences as Tony Stark did before Iron Man 1 came out. These three movies wound up being the Top 3 of the franchise. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
I was hoping you'd do this one! #1 favorite movie!!!!
Enjoy!
IT'S BEEN NINE YEARS???????
JESUS' TIME FLIES
Video was awesome! Great details i missed and glad you went over them. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Will do!
Top top video as always, you need much more recognition and subs bro, your videos are so well done especially those thumbnails! 💯
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching!
These movies are just so amazing. Funnily enough, I saw 2 before 1, but it was still really enjoyable even if I didn't get everything that happened upon the first viewing. I used to love Marvel movies (thanks to my mom 💜), but also because I was a kid and didn't get snobby around films until ~16 lmao. I'm not a big MCU fan anymore. I didn't keep up with the shows; I tried to get into Wandavision, but I dipped after the 2nd episode (bad attention span tbh). I didn't even watch a lot of "must-see" movies, I was really only a fan of Spider-Man. I still enjoy Homecoming and Far From Home, but I have a lot of criticisms of them and I wouldn't call them great movies (especially the latter), just decent. Even now, I'm sure No Way Home has its problems, but I still really love that one just for fanboying purposes. I'm sure if I looked at it through a critical lense, it wouldn't be as awesome as I thought it was (but it's still pretty awesome I mean it had freaking Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina like come onnnnnn!!!!!). I thought Multiverse of Madness had cool editing, but everything else ranged from "eh" to "bro what" for me. I didn't keep up with Marvel after that. I didn't even see gotg 3 by my own volition, I went because someone else paying for it. And I'm super glad I saw it! It broke my heart, it made me laugh (even if some of the humor didn't land. Being stoned helped though). It gave me a villain I could just hate. Not sympathize with, not try to understand, just an intimidating villain who I wanted to see suffer; it was refreshing. All of the characters had their moments and were important, so no one was neglected or done dirty by the script. I hadn't seen these characters since Endgame in 2018 and it made me care about them so much: every single one. And it felt like a proper ending, too. I was sad to see them go, but God, it was such a beautiful story and it ended on a sad, but very hopeful note! It's perfect for the series considering it's been nine years. I couldn't be happier with an ending to such a good series and I'm very excited to watch all of the movies again. (In order this time). Also sorry if anything is incoherent my edible has slowly been kicking in during the writing of this comment and I'm about to be in space.
Clarification cause the first points kinda contradicting (sorry for the essay). I liked the avengers, Thor, and Captain America when I was like 8 and mainly bc of the cool superhero shenanigans. I wasn't paying attention to the plot or characters (other than the heros fighting bad guys) which is why I never considered myself a huge marvel fan. I loved them when I was younger but not for the themes 💀💀💀
Such an underrated channel!
Thank you!
Love the vids gold man! Hope for more mcu vids
I enjoyed the video!
Thanks😊
I'm glad! Thank you for watching!
Bravo! Fantastic video!
Guardians of the galaxy and spider-man and like 1 other is single handedly keeping marvel afloat
Hey love your vids. Gotta make it so your audio isn't peaking all the time and getting distorted. Makes it harder to watch for me at least
Great vid mate
Thanks 👍
It feels like it also has a theme of family the holiday special was one of the best examples of that theme
Love your vids
I love you more
Hey I know you
Goldman to Drax: boo hoo your wife child are dead! Get in line
I really hope you make a video on Guardians 2! I know in the past you mentioned you didn’t love it, but I would love to hear you give it another chance (I think it’s the best mcu movie by a mile)
theres a chance
Guardians 2 grows on you - it's more thematically dense but ofc there are a few too many jokes undercutting it here and there
Happened upon your channel by chance. 7 videos later, you have more than earned another subscription.
Great work.
Awesome, thank you!
I had ZERO interst in this film back in 2014 because i didnt know them. Then when it came out on DVD and i watched it with a friend and now this is one of the best mcu film and now i love GG now
We had a brief break from school and we decided to watch all the MCU movies chronologically and one of our room-mate decided to join us because we're always talking about movies and a lot about the MCU prior to the marathon. He'd never seen a Marvel movie before and by the end he was like, "Yeah, the other characters are cool but the Guardians are the best. They're my favourite." And he's going to see the new one with us in May. I'm so glad that with where the MCU is, I atleast got someone excited to see an MCU movie.
I know you said all the characters other than Groot have lost something, but you could make the argument that even Groot has lost too considering he’s the last of his species.
The opening is among the best one. Do Winter Soldier next.
GOTG may have also begun the trend of the MCU's frivolous tone. Which has begun to age like sour milk for as long as the MCU lives.
24:40 What about vulture and Zemo?
I thought this movie looked good when i saw the trailer but was fucking blown away watching it in the theatre it is so good
So glad Volume 3 turned out great, at least in my opinion.
I’d say it’s a little better than NWH. Which is high praise
8/10
Could you do a video regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
maybe
Everything from up to age of ultron felt unique and nice to rewatch.... everything else, well
Could we get one for vol 2
I feel so old 😢😢
Hey man, what are your thoughts on bad batch season 2?
Mediocre
Hello Gold Man! Can I ask what did yoh think of The Bad Batch Season 2? Did you watch it?
havent finished it yet. It's okay so far
I never understood how or why the Guardians became a team; to me it seemed like they had to or there’d be no movie. I hope this video explains it.
This is still my favorite of the trilogy! I like 2 fine but that one had a little too many jokes for me. Excited for the last one too!
Same here!
Call me crazy but this is actually my favorite marvel movie of all time. And it is undisputed the best stand alone marvel movie
It's top 10 for me
I LOVE THIS MOVIE
I LOVE YOU
@@thegoldman25 aww thanks
Marvel took a ton of huge risks early on. Even the original Ironman was a gamble. Tony Stark was not an A-list superhero in 2007 and RDJ wasn't exactly at the height of his career.
Drop a like if you want return of the jedi 40 years later
i can guarantee as long as I am doing this channel, this video will happen one day. Not sure when but it will
@@thegoldman25 thats great to hear, keep up the amazing content

Scared they’re gonna ruin Guardians 3 like the rest of the movies nowadays
No ones pointing out the fact that he said 202012 💀😭
it was a rough mistake
What’s your thoughts on The Marvels trailer
Looks fantastic!!
