  • The Last of Us is the newest series from HBO. 10 years ago one of the most beloved video games ever made was released, that game was titled The Last of Us. 10 years later the critically acclaimed game got its live action adaptation on HBO of the same name. Just like adaptations of any source material, a lot of people were excited but skeptical of this series. The creators of the games were involved with the series and there was clearly a lot of passion going into it. But almost every viewer was aware of the dark cloud that plagued this series, and that is the curse of video game adaptations. So did HBOs The Last of Us fall victim to this curse. Hell no. The Last of Us is brilliant. But why? What makes this such an incredible show? What makes it stand out as one of the best projects on HBO? And why does this series stand on its own as a great series regardless of the source material. Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we are talking about The Last of Us and why it’s great.

I think the choice to make the gunfire muffled at the end of episode 9 was a smart one. it mirrors Joel's rage that takes over when someone he cares about is in danger. The point isn't to make the final fight difficult for him, it's to show that he isn't even thinking about all the people he's killing, he's only thinking of Ellie

I'm going to add to this that I thought about. I think it's to contrast the first episode where he lost his daughter and felt powerless, to the last episode where the bad things he's learned over 20+ yrs allowed him to save his "daughter". The music and sound was loud and bombastic during Sara's death scene, mimic the chaos and fear he was feeling. Now though, he's known as a killer, a man not to be crossed, and though hes aged and we see him struggle mightily l, at this point, the rage has taken over, no fear and all the acquired skills hes learned to kill, nows its just "I got a job to do, save ellie."

That scene was definitely edited perfectly. It hammers home the weight of his choice and the fact that he's NOT a hero even better than the game imo. He's a human who'll burn the world down to protect someone he loves.

I played the OG before I was a parent..I watched the show with my wife and kid. I understood Joel on a surface level to save Ellie my game partner before family, once I had one I didn’t even consider any other option. I didn’t have to understand Joel and his actions, there was no other way. Pt2 flips that opinion on its head and still begs you to ask dud you make the right choice. Now we have to question dud we make the right choice for our children? What is their future from the world we set for them. The world took everything from Joel and he took everything from the world, but what did Ellie have and what was taken, as a parent the empathy for the decisions you make for your child may literally affect what world they give and what might have been taken from them without the ability to control

Combined with the fact that the fireflies have been fighting for years and not really succeeded and are always on the move as a result, the fact that one guy can move through what is possibly one of the biggest concentrations of the faction (the map in Wyoming had different groups from all over converging on Salt Lake), and take them all down single handedly, tells me that the fireflies wouldn't have been successful in finding a cure either.
They don't know for sure if they can and they only have one doctor. And it's a fungal infection, that we've been led to believe by 2 different scientists earlier in the show, so a cure isn't even possible most likely anyway. A treatment, maybe, is the best bet.
And with their limited resources and equipment and only one guy with unknown credentials working on it, I'm personally not convinced. Especially if they're always on the move, as is the impression I've gotten.
Fireflies talk a big game but they don't really back it up seems like.
Besides even if they somehow were successful. How would they give it out to the population? There's no overarching government really and no real means of mass production, again, assuming you have the resources.
Just sounds like a lot of hopes and dreams that I personally wouldn't give up my kid for.

      @LadyEmaleth Před rokem +8

Agreed. Besides, we've already seen him struggle to protect her both physically and emotionally, so him struggling here would not bring anything new to this character. The way this scene is framed is great because Joel embraces his most violent and darkest side and uses it to save what in his mind is the only thing worth saving - Ellie's life. He takes Bill's advice to its fullest extent and I love it.

I think the reason that Joel doesn't seem to struggle at all while tearing through the hospital is because he isn't struggling, at least emotionally. He will save ellie or he will die, and everyone else is just in his way. He has one objective in his life at that moment and that's why he pursues it like a terminator (he's even framed like one, and i don't think he even takes cover once). Even if he had been shot i don't think he would have considered not pushing forward for a second. his mind is completely empty for anything but saving ellie, nothing else in front of him matters, all the bodies he makes are just a blur.

At this point all he has is Ellie, but even more this reaction is a direct response for how little agency he got or response to Sarah. The man held his daughter in his arms helpless to fate begging for mercy, but this Joel is the total opposite no mercy no forgiveness not even a thought. The world took everything from Joel and Joel took everything from the world

  • @Yamineftis
    @Yamineftis Před rokem +137

I think the scene of Joel killing the fireflies was perfect for the very reason of contrast. At the beggining of episode 9 you see the light in Joel's eyes back, he's happy for the first time in 20 years. The moment he feels like he's gonna lose Ellie it's Sarah all over again, the light leaves his eyes and his mind stops thinking, all he does is what he does best, take out any "motherfucker who stands in his way". The muffled gunshots and strong music with his dead expression just shows how he's dissasociating, he's no longer the Joel we've seen grow, he's the survivalist Tommy and Maria were worried about.
And while I love the moral dilemma of the show, I honestly side with Joel on principle, because I don't think a choice like that should be given to a child, no matter if Ellie would have agreed to die. I pose the question of what would happen if she said no? Would you still kill this child and take away her hopes and dreams? of course not. Now, why would a 14 year old kid say yes to die? would anyone on their right mind say that she's saying that out of complete selflessness and not the huge ass survival guilt complex she suffers? that she feels like she shouldn't be alive when so many died?. And this ties to Joel's own story and how he failed to kill himself, it took 20 years but he found a purpose and a reason to live again, because life and love are worth it.
Of course I don't think Joel was in the right to kill that many people, cuz like Tommy said, other ways do exist, but I don't think he was wrong for saving Ellie at all.
And tbh if I get technical it's just so stupid that they'd be willing to kill their only source of a potential cure for a one shot chance, instead of idk, studying her brain through a biopsy, etc. Just so utterly stupid and desperate it's clear they are just not thinking straight.

I totally agree with you. I doubt Ellie should have taken the decision herself because she is still a kid, a poor orphan kid grown up in a military academy, feeling guilty for having survived, accepting that she is expendable. Is that fair? On the other hand, sacrifice herself was her will in a sense, and Joel knew it. That is the big dillema in the finale.

She was his “mine”. Almost funny how he tried to deny it for so long. He finally confesses to Ellie that Tess was family. Tess loved Joel a lot too: she was very determined to cross the country with him to find Tommy. And... Tess gave Joel a daughter after all, when he was so scared to be a father again. Interesting, isn’t it? :-) ooh, I just realized that Tess tells him “save who you can” and in the end he saves himself. He honored Ellie’s mother and Tess, but with so much violence :-( Heartbreaking.

Joel's march through the hospital is framed the way it is because it's not supposed to be an entertaining, heroic action scene. It's not about us worrying about Joel's safety or seeing him be badass. It's purposely mournful and solemn as we watch Joel's descent into violence as he commits a horrific and selfish act out of love. Whether you agree or disagree with what he does, we aren't supposed to celebrate it. It's an ugly choice and I think there's also a heavy implication that it's as much him trying to save the daughter that died twenty years ago as it is about saving Ellie herself. I thought the whole sequence was hauntingly beautiful and it leads into the end as we watch him continue the descent by lying to Ellie, continuing the awful act and in the process tainting their relationship.

The cello-centric Santoalalla theme is the perfect choice for the scene. Mournful, as you mention. And to me it sounds like multiple cellos, but a very small number. The feel of a cello solo, but not a solo. To me that heightens Joel's dissociation from everything but his goal.

Beautiful when he finally asks his brother for help and he gets help. SPOILERs of season 1 Note: If Ellie had chosen Tommy, she would be dead now in the hospital and Tommy and Marlene would have saved the world. She in a way chose her destiny seaking protection from Joel. She knew he was a good father, and parents often decide what is better for their children...

I think even more than the ghost, Joel is motivated by the lie that he believes about himself that he must be shown IS a lie in order to heal: His lie is that he failed Sara & he no longer can care, love or keep others safe.
And episode 3 wasn't just filler - Bill IS a Joel - and Bill doesn't like Joel, but shows (and tells) Joel that letting someone in is the most important thing - directly attacking Joel's lie.

    • @Laurel_Ellenstreet
      @Laurel_Ellenstreet Před rokem +1

Joel lies to himself: his defense mechanism plan sucks. Avoiding any connection is not who he is. And being the perfect protector is dependent on external forces beyond his control. While their default mode is more Arya/Hound than parent/child, he gets into dad mode pretty quickly. On day 2 he starts to at least not dislike Ellie and is showing concern for her well-being as well as her physical safety. He tries to turn her away from the bodies in the state house. He tries to deter her from the mass grave pit. Big bonding on KC day 1, and I think he's really taking his dad mode out of mothballs on the way out of KC and definitely all the way there in Jackson -- except for acknowledging it to either of them.
I love the articulation here of the show flipping the Bill example from cautionary to aspirational. Another video suggests that, for now, Joel takes away the wrong lesson - maintain control and protect, where Bill's story is about relinquishing control.

Inside baseball: when it was brought up to a producer who will remain unnamed that there needed to be a giraffe, said producer was all 'what the hell are you talking about' because said producer clearly hadn't played the game (which was unusual for this production). The giraffe scene is the emotional climax of the whole series, sort of like how the real climax of The Sixth Sense isn't when it's revealed that Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time, it's when Haley Joel Osmont and Toni Collette are in the car, stuck in traffic, and he tells her that her mother watched her dance.

All that, plus there’s no better way to illustrate to the audience that this is a story about interpersonal relationships. Pretty much every plot point is driven by an interpersonal relationship. Joel agrees to transport Ellie because of his relationship with Tess, and to find a way to get to his brother. Joel and Ellie become a found family and their relationship drives most of the plot. Kathleen wants Sam and Henry dead because Henry killed her brother, and Henry only did it because he wanted to save his brother. Marlene didn’t kill Ellie at birth because she was longtime friends with Anna. Even David only became the leader he was because he had henchmen like James. It’s all about relationships, and how they motivate us

But they also referenced another western show/movie which had this one guy who’s just so good at killing not because he’s the fastest, but the calmest. 42:48 I think the reason they didn’t make Joel struggle is to show that Joel is not making a good decision. It shows he is sacrificing the many to save the few. It shows that he is killing “innocent” people in the situation and that he is not doing the “right” thing. While it would have been good to see him struggle it would almost make people more likely to say Joel is in the right as these people are bad

I think the decision to have the muted sense of struggle for Joel in the final episode was done explicitly to highlight his clarity of purpose, and I thought it did a good job of conveying that. It didn't matter how many people stood between him and her. There could have been a hundred people, a thousand; he would have still slowly, deliberately stalked his way to her, his only regard for his life being that it was necessary to protect hers.

A couple of details most people get wrong about the ending:
In the game, if you perform certain actions, you find out that they procedure most likely will not result in a cure. There are videos discussing the science of this show that explain how incredibly wrong these doctors are. Either none of them have the relevant specialist knowledge, or they have become so desperate that they are attempting nonsense conclusions.
That means Joel saved Ellie from a pointless death.
But the catch is that when you look at this from Ellie's point of view, he hit her in her worst fear, which was to die alone because she is the only immune person. Dying on that operating table for even the chance of saving others may have been preferable in her eyes, and Joel took that away from her and opened her up to the possibility of her worst fear.
Joel put his emotional need ahead of what Ellie wanted, but I don't think he could help himself because he opened up to her.

Coming from someone who adores the original game and even it's sequel, this show in a way helped me understand how those who are readers feel whenever they see their favorite novel adapted into a movie/tv series because I knew what was coming in most of the episodes (the Bill and Frank was INCREDIBLE by the way despite the deviation) and I was still astounded by how the creators' interpretation and felt their changes made the story even better.
I really ADORE how they further humanized Joel is in this series. Not just with his age and his monologue to Tommy but when he's confronted by Ellie who brings up Sarah, as opposed to his response in the game where he says "You are treading on some MIGHTY thin ice here!" he quietly says "Don't.... Don't say another word!" as it's explicitly clear how he's still deeply broken over losing his child.
And the first time they encounter the clickers in museum was an absolute joy for me on how they showcased the fear and danger of encountering them. It was a unique experience for me because as a fan watching that sequence I thought "That's it!" and yet seeing it portrayed in live action still scared me in all the right ways.

I gotta disagree with you about that massacre at the hospital it was hard but Joel was so focused on getting to Ellie he made it easy he’s being shot at but he’s so focused on his goal there’s nothing that could have got in his way. It’s like those stories of when a mothers child is stuck under a car and they lift it in a normal situation that’s virtually impossible but when mind body and heart is all on the same goal everything is easy to overcome. I think that scene best represents how much Ellie means to Joel

Joel was actually dissociating, its because of his past trauma and things he's done to survive. When love can bring you reasons to live or die for, fear can give you wings. I don't even think he was in his best mind in that moment. And he was just walking through the end of his way after killing the fireflies because he knew it was fucked up and he was in a state of shock.
I think the reason why the show was keeping this thing about what he's capable of and why Robert was so terrifying of him and Tommy and Maria was keeping him away and not even communicating with him was so important and paid off very well in this episode 9.
He can dissociate like that and he is dangerous.
The struggle about the final fight with the fireflies was more like a mental state, he was even maybe accepting the fact that he could have died and not even save Ellie but it was worth it. I guess he was kinda surprised how he was still alive tho haha love is pretty much everything beautiful and scary as shit at the same time.
And also I don't think that really matters the debate about Ellie's choice in that cure. Sure its complex and interesting but the thing is she really wanted to save the world and no more children dying in front of their parents or loved ones left behind to the infected, brothers killing themselves... that wouldn't happen again and she had done so much to the point I think she would sacrificed herself for the cure. Not even if the cure would actually work is really that important to debate about.
I get every side of the story and its so fascinating. But I kinda hate when people don't think about Ellie's side of that when its clearly obvious that the fireflies wouldn't bother telling Ellie about the whole thing, considering that they would never take a no as an answer. The humanity is like that from 20 years in absolute hell and she is... just a child.
Sorry for the novel haha but I really loved your video and your thoughts on this masterpiece.

I'm relieved Nail is involved with the series as I don't know if this series would be as good without his involvement. to your question, I'm not a psychologist hence my interpretation may be incorrect, but I think the "muffled" sound as Joel marched through the hospital may have been intended to showcase his mental state. I think the moment at the hospital goes back to your points regarding PTSD Joel had been struggling with that during verious moments in this version of the story he also saw what he believed to be his daughter Sarah during a panic attack at Tommy's to me this indicated a level of mental instability due to lack of treatment hence by the time Joel reached the tragic and grimm decision to do what he did to "save" Ellie he had shut down all sense of logic and concern beyond saving his daughter he viewed the realization that Ellie would have to die to astract the cure as a second chance to save his child thus his focus was on nothing else, but I think there should have been some cutscenes back in fourth between Joel's mind to depict how chaotic the hospital became during the attempt to stop Joel, but overall I think it was a good scene that simply needed a bit more action in fact that would be one of my few constructive criticisms, the series needed a bit more action, plus a stable time frame for each episode as some episodes were super short, otherwise great show, by the way I enjoyed hearing you're take nice work!

My take on the gunfire being muffled, the audio choice of having the music play while the audio of the scene is low in episode 9 is that it keeps us from being able to easily celebrate in Joel's violence. If there was more resistance, Joel had to put up more of a fight, it would feel too much like an action sequence. He'd be mowing through people proficiently in the way that John Wick does. By muting the sounds, by focusing our attention on Joel's stone cold expression of determination, it forces us to reckon with the violence. It's the thing that allows us to question whether or not what he is doing is the right thing. It's what allows us to feel uneasy when so many times movies have conditioned us to celebrate this type of violence as being just. Much like with Joel taking the same action in the game, we're forced to go along with it, we don't get the opportunity to object if we think there might be a better way of doing it, a better way of handling it. Joel has made up his mind, and we're forced to sit with an uneasy feeling as we watch the events unfold. Here is a man who the story has told us over and over again became a stone cold killer during the apocalypse, devoid of the ability to feel emotion after the death of Sarah. We've watched him grow over the course of the show, to learn to love again, to show compassion, to care for and protect Ellie. And then heres this climactic moment in which protecting her requires violence against people who are trying to save the world. These aren't zombies, these aren't fascists, these aren't religious zealots. Yes, the Fireflies plan to let Ellie die, but for the good of all humanity in the hope of finding a cure. And the sound editing helps communicate exactly what the scene is. This isn't an action sequence. This is a tragedy.

The trust is not completely gone. It is under stress, but it "only" applies to something Ellie can't really process for many reasons. Something the show has done well is show the steady growth of their connection while often positioning them as misaligned in their needs and priorities. The relationship is its own thing, and what either party is going through is a separate problem. This is THE example of that.
Someone elsewhere noted that Ellie has no life experience of being parented, has not grown up being lied to by parents (and learning to lie to them), having fundamental things being controlled by them, knowing it's theoretically for her own good, maybe not agreeing but knowing it comes from a place of love. Her direct frame of reference for being loved and respected is friendship. And while Joel steadily, intuitively, gets deeper into dad mode because he DOES have that experience, their day-to-day default is teamwork, friendship, mentoring. So he's acting as any parent would, given the necessary skills and opportunity, but she doesn't necessarily recognize that at this stage of her life.

But when this event becomes impossible for Ellie to live with in silence, Ellie still has enough trust in Joel to stay in Jackson, continue living in Joel's garage, working with him when needed, and keep her estrangement from him discreet. At least I read the Maria conversation the morning after the dance that way. Probably also the sense that she still loves him and wants to be near him. Ellie tells here they are fine, and it's true because they just had the porch talk. The highlight of which was Joel's complete honesty that he'd do "it" again, and Ellie accepting that this may always be A Thing between them but she wants the relationship back. With more life experience on her side, she'd empathize more. But Alas...

While there have been other VG adaptations that have taken characters/settings/ideas from a game and made its own engaging story from it (Arcane, Sonic the Hedgehog), TLOU is definitely the first to adapt a specific video game’s narrative story so well. It feels and functions more like a Book-to-Film adaptation because of the nature of TLOU’s tone, writing, and pacing.

Yup, and good book to film HAS to change bits and pieces in order to reveal character in a way that removes a lot of exposition, takes out extraneous information and condenses a lot of things to make it cohesive. There are some great (old) examples of this in William Goldman's book Three Screenplays.

Purest bonds are those that are cherished being in the moment not pondering on the future outcome.
But sometimes we unleash our true love for others only after setting aside our logic and then can go to any extent to preserve it.
Homo sapiens have gone through such an evolutionary journey that the company of others has become one of the most important requirements to live just as food, shelter and exercise.
Joel knows this new relationship with Ellie doesn't have any future it will only end in pain and pain but still he commits himself. And this is not a flaw or deficiency of character, we do this in our life everyday.
Surely our generation is not the last of us. But, thousands or millions years after, there will be some "lust of us" at the brink of human extinction, perhaps they will also be grappling with such agonizing choices.

44:20 This scene, of the close up on Joel's face as he lies to Ellie intercut with what actually happened is a beautiful example of Pedro Pascal's ability to communicate so many layers of ambivalence and dread. He's showing a self-awareness that this is wrong and even that it's probably going to be the thing that causes him to lose Ellie, but he can't bring himself to speak the truth. Joel excels in physical battle, but is a coward in matters of the heart. Pedro Pascal is next level.

Its meant to give weight to the emotional obstacles Joel is facing rather than the physical one. I see what you mean though, he should have struggled more even though as skilled as Joel is. It was a creative choice that I think worked but yeah it'll kinda leave us wanting more action wise.

I think I know why it's so great and this is a short one. Every gamers here probably knows what the story is all about and expecting of what they want to see from the game itself and from the adaptations they made... the comparisons are there. Well for me, what they did was ofcourse they adapt the scenes from the game like in the original spot... but some little scenes in the adaptation is that they shoot it at a different camera angle but still with the same scene from the game, it's like the camera is in different location but the scenes are entirely the same. some gamers/viewers like me wanted to see that very scene/s from the game but in a different angle shot when adapted... it's like, what if we (the audience) saw this exact scene from the game but in a different camera angle in the adaptations, and what might be the audience reactions? Well it turns out successful. Well the viewers loved it and that includes me (ofcourse the added new scenes is a different story to tell hehehe).... and BOOM !!! Great story, great adaptations. And now, probably the people (and including me... again) wanted more and hoping not to end the series yet, and perhaps they wanted to have an alternate ending... a happy one I guess, where the three of them outlived the pandemic and with the same new child at the old farmhouse. Sorry if this turns out confusing but this is my own point of view and my opinion as well. Thank You for reading though hehehe.

As for me (the viewer) wanted to see the surroundings of where she is and what the situations she is on that very moment. OMG I made it short again. thanks again for reading this. Great show I loved it!!! Thank you so much for putting this video together this was exactly what I was looking for. The format of review/recap with an in depth analysis is perfectly my speed. I’ll be back for more for sure! I’m not a gamer so the back and forth between the show and game reviews had gotten extremely boring for me. I don’t want to get into anything other than the finale and the one very simple point I’m finding to be amazing that nobody is pointing out. Yes Marlene and Joel are making decisions for Ellie and not allowing her to make for herself but Joel has no choice. Marlene’s decision is final. Her way and Ellie dies but Joel’s way provides a choice for Ellie. Unfortunately with the way Marlene and the Fireflies handle him makes the whole thing into a blood bath but my point is simple. Joel has to do what he does to get Ellie to a point where she can make decisions for herself moving forward. Even though the opportunity for a cure may be now over that is the FireFlies fault. They should’ve given Ellie a chance to understand what was going on. Joel’s mistake is the lie and double down on the lie. I’d love to see the show have him come clean and take things in that direction for much of the 2nd season

I didnt know pedro before this show but now im a fan for life. He brings a vulnerability thats so attractive, and i think its made even better because he has personal experience with a tragic loss. He can relate to joel’s desire to avoid getting close bc it hurts too much when u lose them. Literally the only thing I thought was not done well in the show, is the fact that they go into detail about the infected hive mind in episode 2 but dont really do anything with it in future episodes. Setting the intended tone had a lot to do with why the sound is muffled in the hospital. It's not meant to be an exciting action hero sequence. Joel is making a decision that may be based on his love for Ellie and wanting to protect her. But he is still going through a hospital and killing a bunch of people with their own loved ones in the process as well as stripping the world of a potential cure.
There's a ton of moral gray and in the end, the show and game is leaving it up to us to decide who we think was right or wrong in that moment.

There was not one situation where his deafness put him in more trouble than he would've been had he been able to speak or hear. I don't agree with them making Sam deaf, but at the very least they could've made it been an interesting feature for the show, something that actually gives him an advantage. Perhaps they can communicate better in an area filled with clickers using sign language. Him being deaf was just an artifical way of increasing the value of the loss. There actually was no real value added, because whether Sam could talk or not, the episode would've went EXACTLY the way it did.

I actually loved how they filmed Joel's methodical rampage. The muffled sound with the music was perfect. Joel tried to pawn Ellie off to Tommy because he feared he couldn't protect her. Well, he conquered that fear. I didn't need the tension and big battle. Seeing Joel with his methodical dance of death was very pleasing. We have seen many firefights with struggle and tension. How often do we get to see a man have something click and go on a mission.

To answer your question on framing for Ep9... I think the muffled combat, the lack of any real resistance is metaphor for the peace he feels with his decision. Because it wasn't a decision, it just is, and he has finally accepted his place in this world he now inhabits. He was as incapable of letting Ellie get sacrificed as he is flapping his arms to fly. The Protector is Who He Is, and the framing reinforces that.

Even deeper, episode 5 showed Joel who he was up until meeting Ellie. Closed off, mechanical... the pre- pandemic Joel who loves died in his suicide attempt, even if his body lived. Henry forced him to look into that mirror, which started the panic attacks. He never had them before Henry. Ellie didn't just heal him, she allowed his Rebirth.

I thought it was demonstrative of how easy this choice is for him. He doesn’t struggle with it. He doesn’t pause, or falter, or have to overcome anything. He is 100% sure that saving Ellie is the right thing for him to do and the only moment he maybe takes a second to think about it is when Ellie asks him if he’s told her the truth. He pauses for a second then not because of what he’s done but for what he thinks Ellie might need to hear. He mows down everyone who could harm Ellie and gets her somewhere safe and only considers whether Ellie may be a harm to herself if he told her the truth.

I like that they kept him coldly killing the surgeon due to most players did that most players did not hesitate at all to shoot him (or one guy set him on fire!) and I agree with them leaving the nurses alive due to many did that too (I didn't) I thought they would be setting Joel up the whole show to be in the right with the introduction of no cure but I think them allowing him to kill the surgeon in a world where surgeons are even more rare then doctors balances the no cure aspect out a bit.
Game Joel wasn't aware of no cure or even if there was a cure possible but he still killed rare medical personel to make that happen and in my game I killed nurses who may also be as rare as surgeons!
We don't know if TV Joel knew about no cure but he also seemed to not care. Maybe the TLOU2 show will go over what he knew and didn't know on that end & if he believed she was the cure and he didn't care.

For those of you who didn't know, Craig Mazin, the showrunner for the Last of Us, helped Rian Johnson write the opening crawl for the Last Jedi! I'm surprised nobody online has talked about this at all.

That's because the sequels are garbage and completely disregard any established lore star wars already had. Just like everything else Disney touches they ruin it. Worst mistake George Lucas ever made and he's basically admitted it

I would not sacrifice a kid for a maybe, it might work. I would need more doctors more opinions possible alternatives and then and only then ask permission to the adopted father and the person whose going to die if they are willing to give up their life for it. Under the circumstances Joel had no choice unfortunately.

I think the muffled gunshots let the audience think about Joel's morals. If there were big action scenes and loud gunshots, audiences would get distracted. But with this sad, unnerving montage of murder, the audience, or at least I, could reflect on the damage a human is willing to do in order to save someone else. It really shows how emotional/ruthless one can get and have no remorse for committing murder. Also, after the shooting, Ellie was obviously struggling with the fact that so many people have died throughout the journey. I think the quick, unnerving montage of Joel murdering all the Fireflies without any emotion really makes Joel look even worse when he lies to Ellie about not hurting anyone because he did it so cruelly.
So I think all the editing choices (Especially the music!) they made when Joel was killing the Fireflies really emphasizes Joel's lack of remorse and extreme focus when killing all the Fireflies. It's a great thinking moment for the audience to reflect on the human condition.
Anyway, Joel was objectively wrong if the only thing they could do is kill Ellie (which isn't true they could of just gotten a brain sample), but I have to support Joel on this one because he needs Ellie. The two need each other and I don't want Marlene to get in the way of their beautiful relationship.

Reminder….henry’s suicide also makes joel think about what he almost did after sarah died (which we dont learn about until the final episode). When u go back and watch episode 5 again, u look at it through the lens of joel having been someone who almost took that step. He is asking henry to give him the gun in a knowing way, feeling he might kill himself.

Great analysis, I agree with almost every point except I don’t know any parent that would sacrifice their child… even if it was to save the world, that’s not how parents think, I know I would always choose my kids over anyone else, you can call that selfish but it’s just a fact.

I agree with others saying the lack of struggle and muffled gunfire helps express how he’s deadly when he’s angry because of his control. I think it was a smart choice also because it does not paint the Fireflies as “bad guys.”
If Joel has to struggle to save Ellie it could make the audience want to root for his success. We would see the Fireflies keeping them apart, as obstacles to overcome. I definitely feel like that’s not the goal of the hospital scene. We’re not supposed to root for Joel picking one person over the rest of the population. We’re supposed to understand why his decision absolutely makes sense, in the context of this story and the human condition, even if it’s not a “good/heroic” choice.

A simple moral & ethical rule of conduct, I might be willing if I were Ellie to save humanity per-say. The least I would expect of the beneficiaries, would be they inform me and allow me time to speak to the man that carried me across half the country. Your wrong there is a clear line of right & wrong and they deserved death they earned it, I would see having no pity or mercy on the Fireflies.
