    GOTG 3 is maybe the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it stands above the rest of the MCU because of its many themes: Religion, Trauma, Empathy, and Utopanism. In this video essay, we break down these themes and unlock the deeper meaning of the film.

    I want to dive a little bit deeper into Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. We’ve made some great theory videos, broken down the ending, the easter eggs-but now I want to get into what the movie really means-and what it is trying to say. The movie is filled with big ideas, like utopianism, eugenics, religion, Genesis, deism, creationism, trauma-and we’re going to unpack all of that. But the uniting theme of the movie is Empathy.
    Empathy
    James Gunn even spelled this out in a tweet, saying, “At the end of the day, this is a movie about joy & compassion & learning to see beyond the rim of our own worlds & having empathy for all living things.”
    Doug: But what does empathy even mean?
    It means to understan d and share the feelings of another. In other words, it’s the ability to see the world from someone else’s point of view. Empathy is the great argument killer, and it's the crux of the kind of peaceful society the High Evolutionary is trying to build. The arc of this team over three movies has been to overcome trauma and learn to empathize with others. Like when nebula finally forced Gamora to understand how hard her life has been [clip].
    Guardians 1 was about the team setting aside their personal desires to work for the good of a collective. Guardians 2 was about the team overcoming their own personal egos to conquer the Ego. and guardians 3 is about the characters finally understanding one another.
    And by the way everyone, before we get too far into this video, I want to show you this very cool dog as a rocket tee shirt.
    Doug: Oh my god, that is incredibly cool.
    It sure is. We have lots of sweet teas in our merch store, and shopping with us is the best way you can support our channel. Thanks for being here with us, and check out the link in the description below.
    This film is filled with people trying to understand one another. Peter tries to explain to Gamora what they had in another life. [clip]. When Bowie lands on Counter-Earth, the team struggles to communicate what they want [ball throw]. And Peter has to find a way to communicate with the bat-woman-at first by screaming at her like a tourist [clip], but eventually through the act of art. Art is actually a great unifier across societies, because it creates something many cultures can empathize with.
    And later in the movie, Nebula struggles to communicate with the children, but Drax immediately knows how to speak to kids-first by dancing, but then literally speaking their language.
    The character with the greatest arc to learn empathy is Adam warlock. He begins the movie serving the High Evolutionary because he only wants to save HIS civilization, he’s only concerned for HIS people. But then he misunderstands his mom’s order to “show him we mean business,” and he sees how his actions have hurt Blurpp’s feelings. Adam then says, “ I don;t like how that made me feel,” because he empathizes with the pet, and takes him in.
    Adam eventually becomes a hero, because Groot empathizes with him. Groot saves his life, saying “everyone deserves a second chance.” All of the guardians have been given a second chance to reinvent their lives-but especially Groot, because he is the son of a tree that sacrificed himself for the others. Groot’s empathy for the warlock not only saves Adam, but it eventually saves Peter when the warlock saves his life. The lesson here is that empathy creates a society where people work together for mutual benefit.
    So with this cen tral theme of empathy, Mantis has become the most important character in the movie. Her powers have always been underrated-she is an empath, who can feel the emotions of others. [cip, crying with Drax].
    But this power also makes her understand everyone’s emotions even better than they do-she would make a great therapist. For instance, look at the obelisks. The Guardians fought one of these in Volume 2, so we just assume they;re big bloodthirsty monsters. The High Evolutionary issues they’re monsters, so he sics them on the team. But Mantis sees them for who they really are-scared animals that only want to eat batteries.

    You can tell how much Ryan loved GotG3 by how much depth and detail he poured into his analysis. Some of his finest work, imo. Makes me proud to be human, aka "a messy, wet, mistake-making sack of water that smiles." Yup - nailed it.

    With all this subtext in mind, I think it says something about how James Gunn feels about creating art, especially re: his time at Disney. You could read the High Evolutionary as a studio executive, desperately trying to find a way to recreate creativity on a mass produced scale, while also homogenizing it. Creatives like James Gunn and Rocket aren’t welcome in the Disney Utopia because they’re not “perfect” or “sanitized.” The High Evolutionary/Studio Exec wants creative beings, but only if he is able to control it. But the ending is still happy, as Rocket and Gunn get to move on and have their new team, with some of the same people still involved, and keep doing what they do, just in a slightly different way.

    The Christmas Special was really the first time we saw Mantis is actually somewhat "supersoldier" for basic physical feats, in terms of her durability, leaping height, hand-to-hand capabilities. Ego gave her more than just her extreme Empath powers. She's physically pretty tough.

    • @reichen666
      @reichen666 Před rokem +3

      In the original comics, she's a half-vietnamese martial arts master with numerous physical capabilities.
      Of course, she's extremely nerfed and infantilized in the movies for narrative purposes.

    Lylla's action in licking the cloth and soothing Rocket's pain is beautiful. you can see now why Rocket is so devestated by the events that unfold later on. I don't know if they do this visually in the movie, as I'm blind, but a film reel of all the kindnesses done to Rocket by Lylla should spool through his mind as he's looking down at Lylla's body after she was shot. good visual representation of everything good about Lylla who's violent and untimely death is about to change Rocket's life forever.

      Agreed! Not a fan of GotG but sheesh, it made me feel a lot.
      I dislike many of the characters especially raccoon (before) . . . but . . . argh 😤, I still do after the movie. I don't really subscribe to this trend of justifying bad behavior by "humanizing" anti-heroes (so people sympathize and say "oh, so that's why you massacred everyone, okay, I forgive you."-nope, pass!)
      At this point of the superhero craze, this gimmick is very much contrived (only for me though). But you're right, Nebula did have the most significant character arc and I loved this 3rd movie for that. Gunn really knows how to pull your heartstrings and I am so excited for the new Justice League because of him.

    Coming from someone who has recovered from drugs and alcohol- this hits home. This for me is about recovery. When you are an addict you feel like a creep. You forget how to love yourself and empathize with others. You never understand your feelings or how to truly love yourself. We got ourselves into this mess by believing we had to be perfect and make others perfect. We suffered traumas as children, teens and early adulthood. We get to this point where we’re “tired of running” and we face the worst in ourselves, and all the internal defects and that idea of perfection. Everything you’re describing is the process of recovery.

  • @AndyChannelle
    @AndyChannelle Před rokem +126

    One step deeper into the meaning. The High Evolutionary's creations are only able to synthesize things from things that already exist. Rocket's unique ability within his work is that he can take the intellectual leap to create things that have never been. Just like AI (and people have been talking about things like ChatGPT writing film scripts for the last couple of years) isn't true intelligence because it builds solely on the objects/texts it has studied, it can never create anything new.
    One more step in, it's about a creative filmmaker looking at the way his bosses would love to run their industry, removing the human element which is costly, and sending out a warning to us and his colleagues that creativity cannot come from machine learning or an algorithm.
    BTW: Solidarity with striking writers who are literally the guardians of the creative galaxy in the US at the moment.

      @@bodaugherty9654 Its a bit of both Rocket is able to innovate think of people who are able to advance society whether its technology, art or something else but possess other attributes that make them undesirable eg poor social skills genetic defects etc. The point the film is making is that perfection is a myth, in order to get those highly desirable traits sometimes you have to take the trade off of having things that others might not see value in. You have to accept people for who they are and learn to accept the flaws as a part of a person. Nebula hating on Drax for not having the same type of intelligence is ultimately pointless because he can't make himself think the way she does and there are going to be instances in which his way of thinking trumps hers because of him being able to relate and connect with others who are thinking on a similar level.

    I like how Doug mumbles the chorus of the Phil Collins/Genesis song here. For years many people (myself included) thought he was saying "Hold On", but it turns out he was always saying "Oh Lord" the entire time, which actually makes much more sense within the lyrics. But hey, we're learning & growing from our mistakes. Thank you for the work, effort, energy, & messages you put into your videos Ryan & Doug. Much love!

    Best movie in this phase and one of the top 5 in the MCU. I hope the High Evolutionary comes back; he was a fantastic villain.
    I have every hope that Gunn will help the DCU to *finally* acquire a heart: decent arcs that make sense for characters we come to care about, and beautiful moments that are earned through layer over layer of good story-telling.
    Ryan and team, thanks for another on-point analysis video. You are a force of good! ❤

    Brilliant analysis dude. Can’t help but think of how much this applies to other holistic schools of thought and analysis out there-historicism, phenomenology, Christian worldview, media ecology, psychoanalysis, VC/tech bro-ism. Empathy is the missing piece in so many of those closed systems of thought. So much apathy and presumption out there, and in here too, sadly. Moving work, Ryan. I feel an uptick of hope and determination after this one.
