  • Best-selling Author, Brian C. Muraresku, (The Immortality Key) explores if Jesus might actually be the Greek God Dionysus.
He explains how ancient Greeks believed that experiencing your death "before you die" actually provides you the chance for immortality.
We go deep and learn about links between early Christianity and Ancient Greek mystical practices, including altered states as a way to be in touch with the spiritual realm, the true origins of Catholicism’s body and blood of Christ, and the pivotal role Greek witches played in shaping early Christianity.
    Brian also breaks down:
    - How the wine used today in church differs from the psychedelic-infused wine of Ancient Greece
    - More than metaphor: What it actually means to ingest the body and blood of Christ
    - Sorcery vs Scripture
    - Lay down and die: "Incubation" as a path to enlightenment
    - The dangers of psychedelic use without prep work and appropriate processing
    - Why he chooses not to use psychedelics himself
Join us as we explore these questions, backed by compelling historical evidence and expert insights that will challenge everything you thought you knew about religious history and Western Civilization as we understand it.

As a Catholic raised as Brian by intellectual Jesuists (who encourage you to think, to ask yourselves, to put all in crisis in order to reach the truth, to be curious), being English only my third language, I can’t even articulate how much I’ve enjoyed this episode that resonates so much in me. How hearing him, a secular, talk so well about the Catholic so difficult to understand mistery of transubstantiation coming from the ancient Greek (so pagane for that young visionary Jew that Jesus was) ritual of Dyonisos. A ritual introduced by paleochristians that allows you to experience divinity in yourself and be attached to something way bigger than you and your mortality..O-M-G! THANK YOU!!

Marisa, Catholic Christianity is a supernatural experience. The pagan and drug experiences are in the carnal body, and can be deceptive and private, not universal. Father Robert Spitzer, S.J. is a better teacher than this author, if you want to study contemporary explanations of who G_d is.

After hearing Mayim's interest the Eucharist, must mention my youngest son prepping for First Holy Communion last year. In the litany of questions and after practicing with unconsacrated host, ask "why can't Jesus have more flavor?" That's what it's like preparing to receive Communion the first time. You're welcome Mayim! Lol

That is an awesome memory. Your son is right though. Jesus does need more flavor, you would think they could put at least a little vanilla in the wafers. Us protestants have the same issue. Anyway, congrats to your son for choosing faith in Jesus. You are obviously a good and loving parent. God bless you.

I find this discussion extremely fascinating. I was raised in Protestant Christianity, gravitated toward Fundamentalist Christianity as a young adult, and become disillusioned about the Christian religion over the last 20 years. I am also a retired medical laboratory professional turned Christian seminary student studying theology and social justice. I find the intersection of early Christian thought, Greek philosophy, and Mediterranean culture to be incredibly fascinating. Throwing in psychedelics and neuroscience is blowing my mind! I also appreciate Johnathan’s groundedness to pull us back to contemporary religious practices. Can’t wait to read Brian’s book!

I spent many years with psychedelics and today there is an obsession with them for sure. Our culture is broken and false and there is a hunger for authentic experience. But for myself, I set all those aside to face reality as it appeared. Ordinary mind/life is the way. That sounds cryptic. It kind of comes on you suddenly, like a flash of light. Your search ends. The psychedelics put on quite a light show. One can find supreme peace facing their death and even smile by fully embracing their life. We seek what we already have. Life is short and beautiful and ugly all at once. Treasure it and you can make a home for joy.

    • @sonjasize
      @sonjasize Před měsícem +2

I feel this transition too. I think it was the aid of psychedelics that helped me dig deep enough to stop search. The therapeutic use of them (in part) led me to a deeper presence in myself and in that presence psychedelics serve less purpose. Being present in the material is as you say ‘the way’.

      I love this comment.
I see it the same as well but a little differently. I see it as some people growing up. Trauma is the biggest phenomenon right now and we are dealing with it as a society. Some people are dealing with it with psychedelics and I believe psychedelics are tied to the spiritual. I've done some psychedelics before and you're right, it takes you into the depth, but eventually you have to stop it and integrate it into your normal life. I think about it like meditation. When you meditate on a mat you learn about the void and what arises. But a great meditator can take the meditation off the mat and into real life. I believe this is all called. Capacity. Capacity is another way of saying we can switch between multiple states but integrate those states into traits. Development. Enlightenment looks like growing up and growing up never stops.🙏❤️🔥🙌☯️

For me, rather than the upside-down, it is more accurately expressed as the inside-out (& backward). I had a transformative experience at my First Holy Communion, as a traditionally raised Catholic. I have come to think of it as what the fundamentalists call the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I have never told anyone this before. I have also experienced literal metaphysical miracles, as in a phenomenon that cannot be explained by science, and that science would say is impossible. So either I am lying, I am delusional, or I experienced something "impossible". I don't care what anyone else thinks. I know what happened. I have done a lot of soul work, and I have never done drugs/halucenogenics (except for a couple hits of speed in high school, and marijuana, which I hated) and I don't drink.

I've had far more profound spiritual experiences 100% clean & sober than I ever did on hallucinogenics, so I don't think that people have to use anything in order to get in touch with that (other than having the desire and willingness to get in touch with God on that level), although there are some people that are so closed-minded that they might actually have to use them just to open their minds. Maybe that is what opened me up in the first place. I did pray for quite a while for God to reveal himself to me, because I had gotten clean in 12 step and was trying to find God as an Atheist. I never heard of the "dying before dying" thing. Interesting.

I found my closer walk with God in 12 step (clean and sober) as a "co-dependent", rather than a substance addict (if you don't count sugar or caffeine, but don't get me started -LOL). I get concerned about the recent popularity of using substances in spiritual practice, as if we cannot access these spiritual experiences without them. I worry it's a dangerous message, and a slippery slope.

On the body/blood of Christ...it's key to remember that Christ is not a name. The word Christ and the word Buddha are the same thing, and I'm sure there are others in different cultures. It merely means enlightened. It was more a reference to embodying enlightenment. And on resurrection at the end of time....anything physical in finite. There are always and only a certain number of humans hwo can ever exist, because it's physical and theerefore finite. This is reference to the understanding of matter not being able to be destroyed. The "end of time" is a reference to the end of THIS time. In Yoga it is referred to as the Yugas..

    • @charliijean
      @charliijean Před 28 dny +2

So the word Christ is the Latin translation of the Jewish word Messiah, which means The Anointed One, Buddha means The Awakened One. Having knowledge and being anointed are two very very different things. Siddhartha Gautama was Awakened. Moses was Anointed, King David was Anointed, Jesus was Anointed, they didn't just have knowledge, they were chosen by God to fulfill God's purpose.Siddhartha Gautama sat under a tree, said smart things and inspired people to behave better. He was a trust fund baby. King David killed the last descendant of the Nephilim with a rock and established an eternal kingdom, laid out the blueprints for the temple, plus made many of the objects for the temple himself. David was a shepherd. Moses, freed his people from slavery, passed down the moral code that all civilized society lives by, regardless of religious belief and established a new nation. Moses was a shepherd. Jesus died one of the most brutal deaths invited, went out to the sick to heal them and fed other people food. Jesus was a carpenter. Also, the titles Messiah and Buddha go far beyond your average Rabbi, Priest or Monk. Any one can gain more knowledge and go into ministry, but only a chosen few can hold the title Buddha and even less that of Messiah.

The only pain that I had during childbirth was the contractions. Nothing else hurt. Interesting. (The second one. The first one I had an epidural. No time for anything for the second one. I didn't even feel the stitches.) Maybe I was in a self-induced trance/panic. That could be it.
You can have a spiritual experience without plants, mushrooms, etc., but with vibrations-drum, rattle, etc., and probably other ways.

in elementary school we would play as a group of girls in these subsections of bush and tree-lined open-closures (im gebüsch) and we'd give ourselves or each other witchy aliases (wonder why with that namechange impulse! still have a thing for that), i don't remember the others unfortunately i'd be curious, but we would interact with leaves and plants as if preparing them without digesting them (out of caution and poison awareness) but it was on lunchbreak! we would instrumentalize sticks and shell-ish containers and get the juices out of leaves and berries and mix things up. it was like playing house in a sense, we would wonder off (in pairs maybe) but return to one another to share our favorite spaces. i (without growing up on the comics, no touchpoint but i had the W.I.T.C.H ones going on which did shape me, i'd re-read them. they had a lot of emotional depth!) went by a name based around ivy, probably because the sides of our home were overgrown with it, think i always liked the smell of it. wonder what the tropes to the character are i still haven't dabbled oh she cultivated roses? funny to think that there is a potential reoccurrence of ancient rites in that, bit sad that there was no facilitation of learning what was what and what could be done with the plants! wonder what we picked on instinct, i know that i picked leaves for their scent that weren't offputting to the touch, i liked soft leaves, i've got a sensory recall for it. love a snake ring! there's a beautiful sunrise with a lot of smooth-cloud dusty periwinkle going on right now. oh to be painted a devil when what you feel is sunbright! boy do they get a bad rep? i think OCD and its intrusive waking&sleeping-nightmare side can be troublesome with psychedelia like it can surround within that flavor of intrusions.

Humbly, the bigger questions are based in our development of consciousness. We are trying to “reconnect” with our original position, ( like the “big bang” , but in a quantinamical fractal kinda way). I recommend the “Bhagavad Gita: As it is” is Great because it has the original Sanskrit, transliteration, and explanation. All “religion” is really based, though not always focused, but harmonic resonance to Increase consciousness for the betterment of All. To develop the understanding of the science, philosophy, that go behind what you are doing. Then the “triune brain” theory also correlates to the consciousness of “ignorance”, “passion”, or “goodness”/ knowledge. It’s a process.

I'm surprised that he went into this level of depth, but he never mentions ego death to reach Nirvana or Enlightenment/Realization, but he does talk about the mind stilling during meditation. I could be wrong, but he also seems to be talking about what Eastern religions and Spirituality would call a third eye meditation. From my admittedly limited experience, that's the only sober method of having these experiences. I'd just say that stilling the mind is a little bit more achievable than he thinks. Am I completely misunderstanding what he's saying? Edit: Ok, he does get there talking about ego death.

"if god didn't exist we would just create god" is like a paraphrase of an old quote that was parodied by a council member deciding what to do about Napoleon who said something like: "if death didn't exist it should be invented today." as in, Napoleon needs to be put to death. Replace death with God for the original quote that was being parodied.

Very important to remember that in the sacrament of communion, it is the body of *Christ*. The priest is not saying, "The body of Jesus." These are spiritual Mysteries that have a Reality and Truth just as myths are not simply stories, but express spiritual and psychological (of the psyche) truths. Same goes for symbols.

Brian's okay. He's got a lot of interesting stuff in that book that Carl Ruck and Dr. DCA Hillman pointed him towards.
Some of his comments were wrong as well.
Such as "we don't know what happened in the mysteries". Clement of Alexandria profanes the "heathen mysteries" in his "Exhortation to the Heathen".
Aeschylus is also very famously accused of impiety for revealing too much of the mystery in his plays.
He made mention that nobody from as far East as India came to Eleusis for the mystery, which is also false.
According to Lucius Cassius Dio, a Gymnosophist from India by the name of Zarmarus visited Eleusis and burned himself alive after attending the mystery.
Also the comment about wine being the one thing connecting the Greek mysteries to Christianity is not correct. There were plenty of other concepts and titles that were in use centuries before Christianity came around. Virgin birth, son of God, Eucharist, Exorcism, raising the dead. The word for "Christing" shows up in Prometheus Bound, centuries before Christianity's inception.
Brian is a savvy writer, but he needs to give credit to those who showed him something like Dioscurides.

This is so bizarre. I literally had this conversation recently through passover that Moses did not talk directly to god - he was high on mushrooms. Its totally believable and not a stretch as it is still common practice today among many cultures to use intoxicating substances to be more connected spiritually ayahuasca, marijuana, psilocybin, and even alcohol have all be used in religions to bring us closer to god. Those of you who find this so deeply offensive could benefit from reflecting on why its so painful for you to believe someone was in an altered state of consciousness and experienced connection to something greater.

I love Him with all my heart. I have heard you say “you don’t need to tell me there’s a God because I know there is”. I know there is too. He is indeed the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob…and Jesus is Messiah. The prophecies including what has been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls don’t lie. Much love to you. My heart and prayers are with you and all my Jewish brothers and sisters - truly the extreme antisemitism proves that the Messiah has come and that He is, was and always will be Jewish. He loves us so much. God bless you my friend. 🌹

Mayim, Christians do not worship "a young Jew named Jesus". Saying this is offensive, meant to ridicule--and I think you are smart enough to know this. Jesus' being Jewish is incidental. It could very well be that Jesus embodied among the Jews because the message was most most needed there. It could be that the area was the most ripe for having the teachings disseminated. Often Jews seem to tend to look at everything that goes on through the lens of Jewishness, but most of the rest of the world does not.
