The way Elizabeth treats Henry quite interesting. She s fully aware of the fact that her father passed the execution order for her mother and she hide her hate for him quite well. She definitely seems to be less emotionally attached than mary. Like you say, she is probably aware of what happened to her mother and in the show (and possibly in real life), decided not to marry based off of what Henry decided to do to katherine howard (though more understandable than with anne, still tragic). I think elizabeth is something of a feminist. She doesn't understand the preference for boys when both her and other women are capable of being both strong and clever, and she disapproves of her father's treatment of women. Coupled with that, she hasn't had the same time with both him and her mother that mary has had with him and her mother. Elizabeth probably does love him somewhere in there but has no illusions as to the sort of person he can be.

@Smiles and the Twisted MD That's true she had several "kept" men who she provided with land and trade rights and it's unlikely she would have lavished so much money and luxury onto them if they were not her lovers. The main one was Robert Dudley, Earl of Essex, and then after he died she went for his stepson Robert Devereux... kind of weird but obviously, he could be bought. It went to his head though and he may have supported a coup against her and he .... well he ended up having his head taken off his shoulders. He didn't really accept his role as royal boy-toy as his stepfather had before him so it didn't work out very well for him.
The Virgin Queen thing was mainly to create a Goddess-like image of Queen Elizabeth because the church hated women and many people did not believe a Queen could rule ... even though she ushered in a Golden Age for England! But who was one woman the church did not hate? The Virgin Mary! So she had to emulate a woman her society accepted in order to avoid having her power questioned at every single turn. It was a very clever way for her to market herself to the people and for the most part, it worked! She was known to many as "Gloriana". There were probably more men too, she had crazy amounts of money and power and she could pretty much have whoever she wanted. If she wanted your husband, too bad. He'd probably go very willingly and you'd be crying about it in a more luxurious wardrobe and home!

Being her lover would have put Elizabeth's reputation at risk and certainly not deserved a reward - getting to be with the queen of England would surely be a reward in itself! It makes far more sense for her to reward these courtiers for being faithful servants who did important jobs for her, helped her rule a VERY fragile kingdom, and loyally stood by her when others wanted her usurped or assassinated. There's nothing odd in a ruler rewarding loyal subjects they don't sleep with. She certainly could not have had that many affairs without it coming to light.

I also love the compared reactions of Elizabeth and Mary to Henry's farewell. Mary weeps, while Elizabeth remains solemn. Neither is the 'wrong' reaction. Mary I think did have more of an emotional attachment to him, given that she spent her early childhood as the child of two doting parents. Mary knew how wonderful having Henry's love could be. Elizabeth's time having Henry's unconditional love was much shorter, and it shows here. While Anne lived, we see Elizabeth run fearlessly into her father's arms without a care for protocol, but after Anne was executed, Elizabeth understood enough to know that her circumstances had drastically changed, as had her father's feelings for her. As we see later in the show, there is a measure of care between them, perhaps even love, but also extreme wariness. Henry saw a great deal of Anne in Elizabeth, and Elizabeth never forgot what Henry did to her mother. She loved him, yes, but she had no illusions as to his character, and she made sure to always observe the proprieties around him, according him the respect he was due as a the King. She didn't dare to try and think of him as her father first and king second, as Mary very often did.

There's no way Henry thought Elizabeth was a bastard. The fact (historically) he almost certainly knew the charges against Anne were made-up, of his three children Elizabeth was agreed to be the one who resembled Henry the most. In the show, Henry is more in denial than anything else. Each time she displays a trait Anne once had, he fails to see that he also is the same sort of person, and uses the 'Anne-ness' as an excuse to ignore her. I feel this scene captures his realisation of the mistake he made with Elizabeth. The same mistake his own father made with him. He knows he has no right to ask anything of Elizabeth and that, through his own negligence, he's taught her to be self-sufficient. He knows she will be OK.

Maybe Elizabeth loved her father in her earlier life, but I'm sure she began resenting him after her mother died and she was branded a 'bastard' hardly seeing her father anymore. Henry put Edward above her and Mary, and he didn't hide that. Elizabeth didn't want to marry because of what she experienced with her own parents...I don't see exactly see that as 'loving' her dad.

@@IBeMelissa no. Henry executed Anne when Elizabeth was 2 or 3. Her actual feelings over her mothers fate is not known. She grew up in a time were the king was right. If Anne was executed then in their mind God and the king willed it. She likely believed Anne was unfaithful but she believed Henry was her father. She treated her mothers family very well when she was queen (her cousins by mary). It seemed she didnt resent him, or so she made it seem. She would have been brainwashed to revere him. When she became queen and was a grown woman, long after Henry died, then she likely really thought of her mothers unjust faith more and her fathers stupidity.

She was held a princess for a couple years and lived in obscurity as a bastard until Henry's last years, not to mention while Henry pushed Katherine of Aragon aside he ordered Anne to be killed.
It wasn't that she was "strong", not to mention she was known to be very explosive. She wasn't this emotionless ice queen that most people imagine. It's fairly simple.
Mary loved him above everything because he was her father, Elizabeth grew very detached from him, as he never showed any affection. At all. Even here, he reaches out to comfort Mary, the way he looks at her kindly, but only turns to Elizabeth out of courtesy of the sort.

I think Henry's way of viewing Elizabeth changed over the years and in this scene it is nicely portraited. He nodds his head to his daughter, saying her name. In his way that is his acknowledgement, his aproval of Elizabeth's behaviour in that moment. Just moment before he sees how Mary breaks up in tears, and is sad about that.
Because she is not as strong as he would wish her to be at that situation. She is over thirty years old and still unable to feel strong without him, even though it must have been obvious his time was nearing.
But Elizabeth is different, she is strong and composed. He asks her to look after her brother, despite her age and she responds in very grown up way-Yes, Your Majesty. I promise.- I think she says Your Majesty instead of father, because she knows he is King before father and to show him she treats it as royal command and that it is a promise she will never break. It is last thing he asks from her and she will do her best to fallow it. Then he fallows with ,Bless you child.' And I think it shows he actually sees that of all of his children, Elizabeth is most ready to let him go, most realistic and blessed on her own. Traits that every monarch wants to see in his child.

The thing that I love about 1:27 is the fact this was seemingly very selfless of Henry. Uncharacteristically even. He's usually one to throw you a bone and ask how good it tastes "does it please you, your Grace?" when promoting people and "do you like them?" when giving gifts to women. He likes praise and to watch his generosity unfold. But with Kate he knows this is something he will never see happen, but he does it for her anyway. You can see her emotion - she realises he is capable of doing something so genuine for her. Which he probably knew he owed her after sending Thomas Seymour away and basically forcing her into accepting him! He doesn't ask if she's grateful, he just kisses her hand.
