- The 2023 Honda Civic Type R (50,050$ in Canada, $42,895 starting in the US) is the newest rendition of the beloved hot hatchback from Japan. Now with more horsepower and more torque, along with a fresh new look, the new Civic Type R aims to please. 315 horsepower and 310 lb ft of torque are pushed out of a turbo four-cylinder engine, and a limited-slip differential up front helps ensure the power gets put down. Thomas takes the helm for his first drive in the new FL5 generation. Will it be able to live up to the previous generations and be a worthy successor? The bar was already pretty high - let’s see what the new one can do. We hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks for watching! SUBSCRIBE!

Sergio is so cool under pressure. He didn’t even seem to be bothered to be seated next to CZcams legend Thomas
Did a good job hiding his full on chub.
@@amadeiusc657 the hero we deserve
Did he slam other journalist cars into the wall?
Because he’s not a weirdo fanboy? Thomas is a regular dude why would anyone not be able to act normal around him or any other “celebrity” very odd comment
No pressure environment when both Sergio "Checo" Perez and Thomas Holland are equally respectful legends! Great Video! Love this performance machine, but already hate the future and excessive markups!
I did not expect it Thomas meet Sergio in the new Honda Civic type r
anything is possible
@@toyotagaz yep. Ayumu Uehara also met Thomas in this episode.
@@purwantiallan5089 at one point.
@@toyotagaz quite frankly so.
@@purwantiallan5089 Karin Asaka drove this Civic at one episode.
The way they captured the heel toe downshift at the 3:52 mark was awesome. It's truly amazing the amount of detail in the making of these videos. Throttle House is the best car review channel on CZcams.
I would like to add SavageGeese to the list of greatest car channels period.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that
I do like how more simple it is, it's like the older type R or even like an 86 where it's a blank canvas to make it into whatever way you want it to be
Yeah I think the Championship White color emulates that beautifully
It’s actually the same car as its predecessor apart from a less wild looking body with more rear seat space… and an 80% price increase!
@@bikemike1118 the chassis?
@@jahahua the chassis is longer which leads to the overly longish look of the car. More like a limousine than a hot hatch…
Need the full length video of Checo doing hot laps with Thomas
This
Who is Checo?
@@xxxxxxxxxxxx_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sergio Perez, he drives for the RedBull F1 team lol
@@xxxxxxxxxxxx_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sergio Perez (The F1 driver at the start of the video Incase you don’t follow F1) It’s just a nickname for Sergio not sure where it came from though. It’s more just like a second name than a nickname at this point though it’s used for him so often
@@xxxxxxxxxxxx_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx You don't know. Checo is a F1 driver who beat Lewis Hamilton (7x World Champion) in the 2022 WDC.
I like how they showed when Thomas hit that clutch great attention to detail ‼️‼️
Brilliant review!! Thank you Honda for continuing to keep updating the Type R
As a huge F1 fan, seeing Thomas with Sergio on the hot lap had me grinning so much. Love that.
@PAUL DON Poor
I can understand why Doug DeMuro hates press tours.
Hot laps with Perez, Ping pong with Tsunoda, Tickets to a Grand Prix. Sounds like hell.
@@The.Fake.Adam.Lulich DeMuro would want to give an F1 car a Doug score🙄
@@Liam-vh8bz Demuro maybe gonna enjoy this one.
@PAUL DON Elantra quite valuable in terms of rarity.
Was not expecting to see Checo in this. Also he is so focused he almost missed his cue during the intro. Loved it 😂
I think he's in most of the coverage from this event, I saw him in the Straight Pipes one too!
I love Throttle House and I'm glad I watched this. Now I want to see Keiichi Tsuchiya's impression of how this car drives at the limit. He's the end all authority about how any new Type R drives on the track
The journey these 2 have went on is actually insane, from nothing to meeting Checo 🤩
Yeah, they've really hit the big time now, and completely deservedly
@@WilliamCWayne the car is the car that everyone wanted.
CHECOOOOOOOOOO
i still remember watching thomas working on his old bmw 3 series in his garage whilst reviewing other people’s Kia Forte’s
The championship white and red interior just does it for me. I spent a lot of time drooling over white integra type R’s with red interiors when I was a kid, and Honda has successfully tapped into that memory.
@Cary Hernandez hey dip head, overseas it was called a honda integra. He knows that.
@Cary Hernandez in japan its the honda integra
Very cool. My first new Civic Type R review I've seen. Much cleaner looking than the old version and just as or more capable? I'm not sure how I feel about the overall looks yet. I would hope the 7K over the previous versions is worth it!
Stellar video gents. Loved the honourable mention of PartSource lol. As always, great combination of information, opinion and humour. I’m a sub for life.
That red paint and grey wheel combo at the end looks gorgeous.
Yep. As gorgeous as the car itself.
The wheels look good but nothing else does lol
@@DEVILTAZ35 the paint looks good
Red is the perfect colour for this car.

Sergio using 2% of his driving abilities while Thomas uses 100% concentration not to throw up 😂
Honda has always been the king of FF and I am glad this thing still handles like a champ. My CR-Z rotates a lot if you lift off which mad it so fun, can't wait to test drive this thing!
Who wants a type r coupe?
I’ve always wondered if it was possible to put a Type R engine in a 10th gen coupe… I’m surprised no one’s tried! I feel like the performance numbers on a coupe would be better than a hatch… maybe I haven’t watched enough TH though. 😂
I definitely thought the 10th gen coupe was gonna be a type r
Bro it’s a Honda civic
Yessss
Honda civic but can reach 275kph while some proper sports car cant even reach 260kph 😅😅😅😅@@danielb1674
I genuinely mean it when I say this is my favorite channel right now. The skit at the end solidified it. The humor is always right on point and the cars… love the cars man. Love you guys. Best days are throttle house days
Checo and Throttle House! Two of my favorite automotive things! Great Job guys! Checo is the man and so are you two. Keep up the great content.
I just love the way how you really talk about your differences and how good the car is and how bad it is without trying to just talk nothing but positive on a car that might not be that good
What a great combination this is, TH + F1 stuff. I could barely believe it when I saw Checo "The Street Circuit Demon" Peres sitting besides Thomas. This video made me happy. Oh, and the Type-R looks amazing. Honda for life.
What a legendary video. Checo+Throttle House, amazing
Thomas and James do make a dynamic fun duo😎😎 🔥
Agree. 👍
You guys do a great job at reviews!
Maybe I'm partial because it's mine, but I love the off the wall over engineered look of my 2020. I do also have a 18 accord and man, he's right, it's close to an accord type R.
That ending 😂. Awesome content you two!! And Carson!
Honda did a great thing having F1 drivers take different content creators around the track. We were glad to have you guys in my home town! I hope we didn't let you down! 😂 And Harris Hill is very bumpy. Hopefully that didn't color your review too much
OMG! You got to hang out with Checo and the Alpha Tauri guys! What a great life you've built for yourself. Congratulations on all your well-deserved success.
I must say Civic came a long ways that is one gorgeous Type R right there and I never was into Hondas but I must say this year they are some nice cars I can't wait to see that new SI with the double head cam
So glad ya'll made our race in Austin this year - Happy trails
I just watched the Gorolla GR vs. Golf R video like 5 minutes ago not knowing this was going to come out… what perfect timing!
The re release of the Datsun 510 is being released early next year. 650 HP to the wheels. 2000lb car.
You guys have gone far! I've been following you guys for years! Now, you had Sergio Perez, a Formula One driver in your reviews! CRAZY STUFF!!
This 2023 Civic got S grade.
damn. 2.28 mil subs. you guys really blew up. congrats on your success as one of the top car channels .
Thanks for the objective review! Too many reviews just talk about pros and no cons.
Love the car reviews! I have a 2019 CTR, Full Bolt On's pushing close to 400whp when I put in E85. I Love the Interior of the new CTR, however that outside you called it and its true, they went to the other end of the spectrum and it is way to tame now. Keep the reviews coming and looking forward to the track testing with GR, Golf R and CTR head to head.
I love you guys & your amazing work.🥰
I wish i could join your team for anything.
P.s. as you said, the price is now the new deciding factor for type R considering the rivals at 50k
same superb performance, with ( now) elegant "shooting-brake" style that looks gorgeous.... And real practical and usable physical buttons on the dashboard instead of an all-screen-style for which you would otherwise have to look away from the road to change whatever.... They took all the best features from the previous generation and made a car that looks much better too...
that is what I call the recipe of success
Gaymes, you never cease to amaze me with the depth of your jag baggery. Thanks Thomas.
Yeah, manual for more fun. Like it.
Thomas' happiness is priceless.
Everyone wants a manual, I want a sequential, now that would be fun
@@VictorDeveze yep. So did Max Verstappen.
It definitely seems promising. Like Thomas said, more testing is definitely necessary but I'm glad it carries the same sense of lairy playfulness that the old car has. One concern I have is the suspension: it looked really, really stiff on track, to the point where you guys were getting thrown around so much I'd like to know if it hindered your ability to drive the car like in the FK8 Type R LE.
@PAUL DON and that's a bad thing? I don't think Honda is worried about not selling these. Never thought we'd see the day that people are complaining they didn't come in auto, LMAO. Besides, the Type R has never released with an automatic trans in my knowledge, and year after year, it's still here.
@PAUL DON One of the reasons people buy the Type R is because it's manual. There are plenty of other options out there for people that want that experience. Not so much these days for the manual. For that reason alone you'll see every Type R sell.
It’s in +R mode, which most likely gives it the stiffest suspension setting.
@PAUL DON 😂😂😂 lost your when your said auto
@@gabecarreon7671 even the Si doesnt come in auto.... this guy doesnt know the reliablity in the manuals i guess
0:43 his dancing was my favorite part go Thomas. You sing and dance.
I like it a lot better in red with those optional wheels but overall the styling shouldn't offend anyone unlike the last generation. Looking forward to the full review on TH's home territory!
That red was sexy
What nerd would get offended over styling?
@@overlordtype25 offended in this context doesn't mean pearl clutching, it just means put off. I was in this sense offended by the last gen Type Rs styling. I went from a 9th gen civic SI which I loved to a Mk7 Golf R without even considering a Type R purely because of it's immature overwrought styling. The last Type R was not something I could show up in for a business meeting or, God forbid, a funeral which is something a daily driver (which a Type R civic is meant to be) has to be able to do. It's styling was just too vulgar.
@@flacjacket while your opinion is definitely an opinion, it is wrong.
last gen's styling was something that made it stand out, and this car looks like a vw. Please stay with your German cars, if Honda made something styled like the last gen with the new gen's interior I'd make the poor financial decision of buying one in a heartbeat
@@BigDonkMongo I agree, I’ve never liked the new civic, looks more like an accord, the styling definitely stood out on the last and this just makes it blend in.
Good Luck to Sergio for the Mexican GP.
Best looking Type-R series since the spider eyes Integra Type-R of the mid 90's.
Max P1
Checo P2
Lec P3
Y’all are so legendary it’s crazy
Liking those forged wheels. That's a must if you're getting that. Majorly adds to the appearance.
The red type r at the end looks sick!!
Great job guys. The car is a beast. 👍🏼
That outtake at the end is great lol
Love the character dynamic. You guys are lovely
A very complete video considering how little time you likely had with the car! Great job - car looks good. Too bad ordering one over a year ago wasn't early enough and I won't likely see mine ... ever.
$43k? Woof... prices are in fact, out of control. Looks much better though.
I’d give 45 for one. Dealers are already talking 65k markup.
@@ryanb8736 You're the reason they're marking them up so high tho man. Why you gotta add to the problem?
@@Memelord4dayz I have friends offering dealers 65k, just so they can resell them. Welcome to the world of entrepreneurs.
This is what happens when you can’t make money in real estate and stocks now. Specialty cars will go up. That desire is still there.
Remember, we are at the last stages of ICE vehicles. Especially ones that are Manuals and a collectors car that’s numbered.
Bad for anyone thinking they will get one at MSRP. That’s why it’s just a suggested retail price. Street price will vary on demand of buyers. Twenty times more buyers than supply.
Blame Honda for not making more and keeping it limited in the highest buying market.
This is so awesome you got to hang out with those guys
Thomas had me cracking up with Straight Pipes about the Accord looks. Great shoot Thomas!
Really excited to see this car irl the front looks super cool🔥
That ending killed me😂
Anyone else here because of the Smoking Tire Podcast? I will say I love throttle house and have been subscribed for a long time.
Excited to see your track times to see how the Elantra N compares 😍
This is such a cool car. Unfortunately because it starts with a 4 in it's price I probably have to wait til the face lift to get a used one. But thanks for making this Honda, and thanks for the video guys
My dealer where I work adds another $30k for the mark up smh $80k for a civic no thank you lol
Been waiting to see what people really think of the new Type R! Still gotta say I would be prefer an EK9... Call me old fashion lol
Me 2 man, me 2. Overall it's a nice car, but there is something "blob fishy" about it
EF and EK are the best looking civics.
Seems they will never catch that soul again
That was the high water mark. We didn't know it at the time. Glad that they're still making good stuff though
I personally really love the 10th gen type r just such and aggressive looking car
I loved this video. Thank you checo
Sergio Pérez!!!! Omg! He is amazing. So good u brought it to the show. Cheers guys, u r doing a great job
I really like it. I'd definitely own one.
I can already see stealerships dropping a 10 or 15k markup on top of the already high MSRP. Hot laps with Sergio gotta be its own video.
It's kinda cute that you think it will only be 10-15k 🤣😕
@@cloudyview I was laughing as I was typing it too 😂
In EU unofficial price is hitting 54 999€
@@jankisty9704 EU got more controls over scalpers though
Damn shame.
That little alert that let you know that you need to switch gears sounds like a harmonica.
You got Checo to do a review with you!!! This is epic!
Poor James! 😂 Always love the throttle house way. Good honest review on a highly anticipated car. Can’t wait until you get your hands on back in Canada.
Loved my 2017 and was really considering getting the 2023. That was until I tried 3 local dealers who said I’d be lucky to get one in the next 2-3 years due to low supply and a few people on the waiting list. I’m sure this will be 55-60k with mark up too, not to mention interest rates that are double what they were 2 months ago. Not paying that for a civic.
Honestly disappointed with the price. Going to be “44k” with destination…does it even come with heated seats or steering wheel? The previous gen price I could forgive that but at mid 40’s it should have a few more options that are standard on basic cars.
Those were my thoughts as well. The prices are just getting nuts, it's still a civic even if only in name. I personally would choose this or the Si last if for no other reason than the stupid electric parking brake, I just can't bring myself to accept it, and the red interior is nothing more than a "LOOK AT ME" "feature". I LOVE red with cars but no way would I live with that.
"And I'm Sergio"
And I hadn't expected that
Edit: 1:47 - "for that price, it had better drive... to survive"
I didn't know that And I'm James is an Acceleracers fan /j
Another great review. The "outro" was hilarious
Wow, James met up with Thomas and was complimented upon arrival! Sweet thing of him to do! James must be so happy to _personally_ hear Thomas compliment him.
Checks all the boxes and looks amazing. So clean and handsome. But the price...can't imagine paying that price for a civic.
It Checo's all the boxes....
..I'll see myself out now.
Agreed if it started at 35k or something I'd be all for it
Been waiting for this one! My favorite car review channel and my next car 🥲 love my FK8 but was sold on this car on reveal, and certainly even more so now
I couldn't agree more. It's like an Accord with a Wing that a kid put on. I thought the previous styling was too racer boyz but now I wish Honda would stick to the previous Type R.
Love your reviews! Would love to meet you n have a brew n chat about cars etc
My favorite CZcamsrs reviewing one of the coolest hot hatches on the market, with an appearance from my favorite f1 driver, what’s not to love.
Ha Ha "CZcamsr"

Not gonna lie. A little bit of anxiety until I heard James’ voice. Sad he wasn’t there on camera. But a TH review without him at all would be no review at all!
That last shot of the red type R ❤️
Ending was perfect
Proud to own my modded 97 Prelude. With its suspension and chassis set up correctly you can enduce lift-off oversteer. Incredibly tight and fun car. Have the fuel cut at 9,000rpm with cams and a tune.
Very happy Honda still tries to shoot for the goals with the classis FWD fun and potential. This Tupe R is beautiful
We miss you James!
Thomas held it down tho ✊🏾✊🏾
I played the video and was looking elsewhere for a second then I heard "I'm Sergio". Checo does have a unique voice
Just got a civic sport hatchback. I now want to own a type R sometime in my life. They have one in sonic grey near me and it looks sick af
I was like " How the hell did you guys get an FL5 to review already?!" Great stuff ^^
3 people have 1 on my block since June
I really loved the 2020 civic type r it really felt a true new gen type R
Thomas is just so excited!
Oh Ive been waiting for this!
Checo is my favorite F1 driver. He is so humble.
He's a smooth operator
I'm sacrificing a nights sleep here in Australia to watch this! Worth it 100%. Will sell my GR Yaris for this 👀
Keep both of em
Hearing Thomas compare the type R to the Veloster N as a compliment made me so unreasonably happy
So true, the Veloster N is/was a true gem. Great handling and smaller size plus better sound, better looks than this 4 door accord type R.
For those curious to know how a rear wing is functional on a FWD car... It reduces natural lift due to the body shape at speed aka enough downforce to keep the rear tyres planted but not to lift the fronts and reduce traction there
What a weekend it must have been!
Waiting for this mega one!
Sergio is so nice! it's funny watching this after watching it on the straight pipes!
Enjoy your reviews very much. Have been watching them for quite a while. However, at 7:44 you infer that the FK8 hood vent and the gill vents at the rear of the front fenders were not "real" (non-functional). They actually are both functional. The hood scoop primarily vents heat from the engine bay via an aluminum duct underneath the hood feeding down and through the functional front fender gill vents (they actually do have pass-through holes from the wheel wells to the exterior) while also helping relieve air pressure in the engine bay and wheel wells. This is per Honda as reported by Car & Driver. My 2¢. Keep up the great material! 👍
$45k before stealership markup is insane. I would go Elantra N and save $10k
You pay less for a worse car.
That's the trade off.
Elantra N is amazing but the Hyundai dealer experience is terrible.
$50k+ is insane.
Right, just get a Supra at that point
For anyone with a 2020 or later Type R or Civic SI, if you are like me and can't stand the manufactured engine noise, the module that creates it is under the dashboard, behind the glove box. You have to actually remove the glove box to get at it and the module has way more wires going into it than you'd think would be needed. Once removed, you will no longer hear the fake engine noise. I keep the module in the glove box in case a future owner of my SI wants to add the noise back in, but I vastly prefer what little ambient engine noise I get to whatever this module was producing.
if you tune The Elantra N with no mods just a little tune you get way more performance . 340Whp and about same toque for way less .. i got my for $33,600 US
Been a fan of the Latest Gen of type Rs. Although I'm an owner of a MK5 Supra, seeing these cars come out brings a lot more fun on the road!
I actually always liked the previous design. And it’s true that looks just like my 2022 accord with a wing attack to the back. At that price point. I rather go for the manual transmission Supra: and do feel like you’re on something different
