Sebastian, what is the batchcode on your bottle? My theory is that Francis reformulated the fragrance 2 or 3 times. I found Baccarat to be very overwhelming in 2016-2017. Bought a bottle in 2018 (batchcode starting with 18) and it was subdued, no projection (people couldnt smell it) and I'd go noseblind after 40 minutes. I bought a bottle 1 year later (batchcode 19) and it is projecting a lot, my nose doesnt go blind (can smell it 12 hours) and it is a bit more sweet and the saffrone subdued (less medicinal).

When my husband first smelled it, it immediately said "it smells like cat piss" and would not purchase it for me, and got me MFK Feminin Pluriel instead. I bought it for myself, and now he is in love and we both have our own bottle. Fragrance is tricky sometimes !! LOL

Hello, great respect for your work and knowledge! As a recent fragrance lover with not much experience, I have tried Baccarat Rouge 540 on a test strip and I was like " What!! I smell only alcohol with a hint of sugar." Next day I have tried it on the skin and same again. And I was like " Crazy youtubers and their nose" 😁 And few hours later a hint of Ambergris, and I was like "what. I am hallucinating" and the smell was with me the next day and I am now in love. 😁

You and me both. Finally got a decant of BR540 and neither my wife nor I like it at all. After the incredible hype I expected something more, more interesting, more pleasant. It just fell flat. But for years I didn't like Tauer LDDM and last year I tried it again and maybe it was nose maturity but I totally fell in love with it and had to have a bottle. So will follow your lead and give BR a few more tries over time to see if anything changes. Have Zoologist Civet and animalics were notes that I couldn't stand at one time. Now I can't get enough of them. Same with dirty musks. It's amazing how our tastes change isn't it!

  • @litespeed65
    @litespeed65 Před 4 lety +2

Just got samples directly from MFK and I’ve just tried both of them.
I can barely smell the EDP- getting a faint sweet mint toothpaste 1/2” from my arm but almost imperceptible.
The Extrait is clearly stronger with similar notes. Dries to a skin scent in 10 minutes- a stronger slightly sweet mint toothpaste but no Almond, no Ambergris.
I have 2 ml samples so maybe it will grow on me.
I have a bottle of Grand Soir and it’s a champion that wafts glorious Amber to my nose all day long- amazing!

Hi Sebastian, it wasn't love at first sniff for me either. I bought it based on its reviews and hype and I guess I was expecting something super complex, but later on I fell in love with BR 540 when I realized how much happiness it brings to me everytime I wear it. Indeed, it's undoubtedly a beast mode. Its projection and sillage is out of this world.

My experience with hate to love is with Islay scotch. When I was much younger I could not stand heavily "peated" scotch. Needless to say now, half of my liquor collection is Islay scotch. Correlation: over the years things changes and now, we can appreciate some things we just couldn't wrap our heads around years ago. My 2 pennies.... Excellent review as always.

I adore this fragrance. I was given a sample to try, without being told what it was. Every time I wore it, I loved the scent, and I was stopped constantly by strangers asking what I was wearing and that It was amazing. Great video, Sebastian! And in fact I totally get what you mean with not loving a frag at first and then, one day, falling in love (or at least big like) for it. This happened to me with MFK's GRAND SOIR (which is now one of my top 10 if not top 5 frags EVER). It took me 3-4 wears to fall deeply in love with it and to appreciate and really get its magic. The second time I had this change of heart experience was with Boadicea The Victorious' REGAL. I considered it one of my blind buy fails for weeks, until I rediscovered it some days ago and thought to myself: Hello, there, I actually like ya.

Side note if you’re on the fence about buying this and are judging by a test strip or smelling it on your wrist don’t trust that it’s not the initial spray it’s the magic that happens after you spray it as time goes on lol

I never hated this fragrance (BR540) but it has never been my favorite. I like it more now than I used to like it but definitely not a love for me. I also don't get great longevity of it. I get maybe five hours. I do have it in travel form as it came in both my MFK masculine travel collection and feminine travel collection and I do wear it from time to time but no where near a love for me. I used to hate animalic fragrances but within the past year I really really started loving animalics especially super animalic ones. My favorite is Papillon Artisan Perfumes 'Salome' but I am really liking some of the fragrances from Marlou. I think Poudrextase may be my next fragrance :)

I absolutely love the extrait version. When I first put my nose on it there was something sweet and seductive about it, but I felt that I couldn't possibly wear something that sweet smelling. It was definitely unisex, but I wasn't and my pride was getting in the way. I usually wear stuff like an aromatic pungent woodsy and citrusy notes (like Aventus) on my body, and as my guilty pleasure I wear BR450Ex under my hat. From the outside I have a masculine exterior, but when you get close and intimate I have a sweet candy interior.

      The EDP or the Extrait?

    Tobacco Vanille.
I've had a sample of it for probably 3 or 4 years. Would go back to it and smell it every now and then, but just didn't like it or get the hype.
When I finally WORE IT this winter (for the 1st time) I really enjoyed it. Felt rich and classy. Fitting for the holiday season.
I don't like Baccarat Rouge. Maybe I'll come around to it by 2030 lol.

This actually happened to me with Aventus. When I bought my very first niche it was Creed's Virgin Island Water and I got a sample of Aventus. This was 2014 and I I couldn't stand Aventus. It took me 3 to 4 years to fall head over heels for it when I revisited that sample and just had to have a bottle. With baccarat rouge 540 edp it was love at first sniff. Also for a sample not knowing a single thing about it and went crazy for it. Still love it.

Yes, I had the hate toward Dior Fahrenheit at first and for a year or so. A friend gave me a used bottle because she had thrown out her bf, but wanted me to have what she said was the best fragrance ever. This was around 1999, and I thought it smelled like something that shouldn't ever be in a human nose. After a year or so, I kept going back to smelling it and realized that it might be the best fragrance I had ever smelled.

Hi, we have the same experience..... BR540 is interestingly weird... It took me 1 year to love & appreciate this fragrance... Now I really love it that I bought both 200ml EDP & 70ml Extrait. No other fragrance has done this kind of weird experience to me other than BR540. I think it's a masterpiece, trying it short term doesn't do justice, you have to let your nose learn.

I love this frag. and my number 1 picked from the house of MFK, I have the extrait concentration and stays on my jacket for weeks. I also love the grand soir and Satin Oud. I blind bought a Creed Royal Mayfair last year and the first time I tried that fragrance I hated it too much because of the opening, and I put it at the back of my collection and I forgot about it. . A year later, I tried it again and I was blown away how beautiful the fragrance developed , IMHO Royal Mayfair is the most beautiful floral scent I'd ever smell . Actually I ranked Royal Mayfair above Aventus.

I need to try this one again because I didn’t like it on my first sniff either. Maybe the sample was old? At some point I’ll give it another sniff. For me, I hated Shalimar the first time I smelled it and now I really like and appreciate it.

BR540 was not a love at first sniff for me. I actually thought it had a weird scent and I didn’t like it. Several months went by and i tried my sample again. It smelled amazing and it’s been my most complimented fragrance over the past year. The Extrait version smells even better IMO. The added bitter almond note really sets it apart from the EDP. I now own a bottle of both versions.

I'm in the same boat as you Sebastian; just bought a decant - initial vibes are ho hum. It's a nicely blended fragrance - there's an aroma chemical in here that reminds me of a lot of Designers, it may be the hedonine . This causes the silage to be quite reminiscent of others; up close I get a lot of vanillin, but high quality like PdM Herod. The florals sit behind this rounding it out, but so far all I really get from this is a big blast of birch tar / vanilla / resinous spiciness / back up florals. For me I think it's the backup florals that are elevating this scent at all - but beyond that kinda of formulaic.
Maybe like you, it will grow on me over time, but for now I'm glad I only bought a decant - MFK's Oud Extrait is something more interesting - pure vanilla, saffron, and ambrette.

Maybe not as extreme as you, but similar. I love Oud Satin Mood, but BR540 never really did it for me. 6 months later, I tried the sample I have again, and really love it. It smells the same as I remember, objectively, but this time I really like it.

I don't hate Molecule 04, but (similar to your initial experience) I can't smell it. I can smell Molecule 01 just fine and love it. I'm hoping eventually my nose will begin to pick it up. I've mixed Molecule 01 and 04 together as you did in a previous video and I agree with you that it produced a nice aroma.

Damn, that's pricy, but sounds lovely. I did have a similar experience with Charenton Macerations's Christopher Street. The problem was that I was testing it out in late fall / early winter. I was getting a nail polish remover vibe that I didn't like, which I think that was artist intention. But damn, now that it's summer I see what a brilliant scent this is. I even get a rush sniffing the bottle. Agh, it's so nice. Signature summer scent all the way.

YES! This is happening to me right now. I’m in the “it smells like Raid bug spray” phase.
But the notes listed never helped me figure out why. Then today I looked at the notes mentioned on Lucky Scent’s description of it! Voila! It lists Moroccan rosemary and
Sicilian mandarin in the notes! That sounds like that orange oil-grease remover and hand cleaner that mechanics use, the only thing that works to get mechanical grease off hands! Those are notes that are used in that industrial product, but that doesn’t have to mean that perfume is only that. That strong association did ruin it for me at first though!
    Fragrance Notes from Lucky Scent:
    Moroccan rosemary,
    Sicilian mandarin,
    Jamaican Amyris,
    Florentine Iris,
Brazilian Tonka bean absolute, modern woods
