    Never visited Philippines yet but I lived in Thailand and I experienced some similarities. I felt a peace, like I could let my eccentricities come out, I could connect to people more authentically, I felt less of the political black and white thinking trying to box me in. I was happy there. Every day felt like an adventure. Let’s go for a walk around the town and see what’ll happen. People were friendly and happy to talk to me. Prices were reasonable to the point that I could work less and save more. I felt grateful and people were grateful for me in their life. Life became about connecting to the world rather than struggling for an overpriced, shallow xyz (car, house, education, date, anything).

    Excellent! My wife and I watched your video. The one thing I love about the Philippines is the feeling of family. You feel a part of a family that you don't feel here. You feel totally at peace in the Philippines 🇵🇭

    Yeah, the first thing I noticed when I first came here back in 1998, was the friendliness and helpfulness of the people. I was a little wary of the people in Manila, but so many people that I met in the hostel that I first stayed in, I opened up to that friendliness, even more so when I visited the Provinces. It's the people that makes the Philippines the great place that it is. Yes, the diversity of the environment is great, along with cultural events, that make the Philippines a fun place to live.

    Unlike what you experience in the States, because of the strong Filipino Family, there is a strong sense of loyalty and honesty to be wrong in any part of values within the family. Of course there are exceptions in any situation, but the World has diversity throughout. This Country has a open feeling of honor, truth, and respect. I love it and am proud to live in the Philippines.

    The Philippines will never be fully westernised,......the culture and customs are very strong and hard to change no matter how much modernisation there is and that´s a good thing. However, the expats who choose to live there ought to try an assimilate as much as they can within the society rather than just "we" and "them" that way they can experience and understand the best of the Philippines from within.

    Hi Steve,
    Even though I'm sure that the Phillipines is a much more desirable place to live than Massachusetts, for like minded people such as ourselves. There are always going to be some bumps in the road. I like you would choose Nevada over Massachusetts.
    I am sure that your career was very rewarding, but just for the record, being a custodian ( janitor) is a very respectable, very necessary and under appreciated profession. You said nothing wrong I just wanted to put my opinion about Custodians out there.

    Steve, guys ‘our age were pitched the “American Dream”. As opportunity changed along with technology the “Me-ism” and the competitive nature of our society has truly become a “rat race.”. I understand people want the best for themselves and family within any society. The real question then becomes at what cost..?? The cost of time for the hours of work you put in each day, the cost of time you don’t get to spend with your loved ones, the stresses of higher cost of living, medical, food, health care expenses, transportation…….. If you lucky enough to one day step back and a look around and ask…….. what is the end game of living? It certainty isn’t keeping up with the Jones. Are you truly happy??? For some it might be, for others……… Maybe others see life in a different light. And I won’t even get into the politics of American society these days except to say it is sad to see the United States becoming divided by controlling political agendas pushed by the media. Far off lands with lower costs, safer, and a friendly, less competitive society calls to some of us westerners. I have spent time living outside of the US. Is the grass greener on the other side…??? Maybe, and maybe not. Will there alway be hurdles to overcome..?? Of course. But with the opportunity to be our best selves in a more laid back society, maybe the opportunity to achieve a happier, more fulfilled, less stressed live style can bring peace in a world of out of control craziness…….

    Yes main differences is smaller homes, roads are a bit ruff, takes time to fix pot holes. It's allot slower in everything even people move much slower. In the USA most don't really know who lives next door. In the Philippines they are far more loving and friendlier. All around cost is far less. Family is much closer in the PI then in the U.S. I can go on as in my view it's really a difference of night and day. Great video and you just opened up a really talked about topic. Best thing all around is live there in the P.I. is simpler and slower.

    I have stopped referring to the US as "home". This is my home now. Over the years I have tried to adapt more to the culture and have done a pretty good job.
    I have no intention of returning to the US. We parted amicably and have each gone our seperate ways.
    If something happens here, and I have to leave, I will find another country to call "home".

    Steve , if you have to go back to the states don’t go to Nevada ! Live there the last 32 years ! Overrun with Californians very liberal and poorly run state ! And very expensive ! I lived the last year before I came here in Spokane Washington , nice town beautiful part of the country ! I’ve been to the Philippines 3 or 4 times in the last 27 years and have been here about a month since I retired . Once you get past the fear of not being like the US and your not a materialistic person you will love this place people are happier here , the stress levels are a lot lower ! It just takes getting used to not having all the fancy buildings and the organization you are used to . The people here are very smart and talented ! You just have to learn to Identify the good from the bad ! Your videos are really helpful for us moving here ! We really appreciate them keep them up ! Would like to be a Facebook friend

My Take away: Trustworthy loving wives, respectful grateful children, peaceful atmosphere, kind people and communities, little or no materialistic selfishness and judgmental contentions. Ppl more content and happy even in struggles. Very Low cost of housing in tropical beauty. These all missing stateside. Is this list right? And Even w heat- bonus-you can never freeze to death during any year! Can be outdoors all year long.

    USA now feels like you been chased out with economic broom. I went grocery shopping last week for a whopping $550.00. I couldn't believe it. Since 2016 until now my grocery shopping schedule is once every 3 months. I live alone. Before the pandemic I used to spend $200 or more. Then it went up to $300 or more. The prices is unbelievable high. 10 lbs assorted chicken wings used to $9.99 now it's a whopping $27.99. 1lb 2oz ground black pepper used to be $5.99 now it's $16.99. I took my 2 neighbors to Burger King. We order 3 double cheese burger meal for almost $30. And the fries and drinks were the small size before, now it's the large size. Imagine that. My electric bill used to be less than $30 a month. Now it's $50 a month. Some people said that their electric bill used to be $140. Now it's $400. Go figure.

I say to them ' good question but am I suppose to be married..? I also tell them I would have liked to be married but American woman are not interested in me. I am not wealthy, I am not movie star handsome, and I do not have an attitude of "confidence", which is really arrogance. American woman are not interested in me, and I say "that's their issue." I see all sorts of macho rich guys in the U.S. who are not good husbands and lousy fathers. Their wives ultimately hit the 40 somethings and wonder why thy married this man. Well... perhaps I will meet a good Christian woman in the Philippines, God willing.

    My observations of day to day living are more than 20 years old. If anyone goes to the Philippines with a smile, positive attitude, giving spirit and open minded. It will be returned back to you with interest in most circumstances. I would add that my bigger joy was not found in the NCR. That area felt like a grind where the worst in the Philippines was generally on display. If you have ideas on visiting or permanent residence in the Philippines, don't anchor in the NCR.

    A small house is called cozy lol . If you have a big house you can anticipate having house guests on a continuous basis. Personal costs will escalate dramatically. Wants and needs come into play. I prefer a modest home and more open space for a work shop and garden area. A sturdy carport or garage is also helpful if you have a vehicle to protect it from the elements. You don't want a place to big as family members may also want to build a home in your compound. Life is unpredictable and you don't want to overextend your personal needs "personal is your emiediate family "so you are able to have an emergency fund stuck away.

    Only 6 months as a janitor? Come on brother, at least be honest with yourself . You were in the Navy. No matter what your rate was, you were a janitor. Unless you were an O. I know, I’m retired enlisted. Jokes aside, awesome channel. Keep up the great work.

    First let’s get realistic, when you relocate there you’re going to be dealing with human beings not better human beings and definitely not worse. Because it’s a respect oriented society leading to high sensitivity thresholds as opposed to a free speech oriented society (Americans are thicker skinned compared to the rest of the world). Can you adjust to walking on egg shells? You will find that almost everyone you meet is a communist. Many don’t know they’re communist but you have to be careful what you say. The rich are communist too (communism for thee but not for me). Lots of great people that do great things for their communities but I stay silent most of the time unless I could be of assistance which does happen. Otherwise I stay silent and keep my ears open. I do learn a lot of useful information from just listening. But there’s only so much sports and celebrity chizmiz I can take so I get out and socialize with non sex patting American ex pats. You will be hit up for money. I finally put my foot down and no more financing a dinner out-yes I’ve been hit up for that but do reach in to help with groceries and lately oxygen.

    I agree , never take a Filipina out of her home. She will be missing her family and will feel lonely no matter what you do. You are doing the right thing in that aspect . Slowing down from the rat race is hard enough there but could you imagine her trying to catch up to speed in the states , it would drive her crazy . Note : put mild dish soap in a spray bottle and dilute with water then spray on your plants to help keep the bugs from eating them .

    Interesting. You still refer to the United States as "home", as in your references to "back home". In fact, your home is where you are now in the Philippines, not where you came from in the United States. Your 'home' is no longer the United States. Although most of my life has been spent in Canada, I regard my 'home' now as Bangkok, where I have lived for over 25 years and where I am happily married. Enjoy your videos. Thanks.

    I live in the USA but I don't try to keep up with the Joneses. I am happy the way things are. I love my home, love my job, though I am now worried about my son because he is moving to NYC. A celeb stylist gave him the job he applied for (my son has made a name for himself as a hairstylist, has made finals in North American and global competitions and was actually under this celeb hairstylist when on his first day of licensure he found himself being one of the stylists doing hair for a fashion show in NYC), so now he is making preparations to move. He will be assisting at New York Fashion Week in September, so he is excited (celeb stylist already gave him the invitation). He's voluntarily starting at the bottom to learn more (he has climbed as high as he could where he currently is, so to get out of the plateau he is in, he wants to learn more). I am happy for him (he once sent me a photo he took of model Clint Mauro wearing the batwings leather coat that was going to be auctioned in the AmFar Inspirational Gala fashion show, as well as his photos with Canadian model Connor Moxam).
    Keeping up with the Joneses is also in the Philippines (more so than in an American small town). Just be one of the known families in the provinces or Manila. I came from that background, so I am aware of it. Not just among families but also within families. (Just remember that I immigrated to the United States thirty years ago because I wanted to make a life for myself as nobody. Instead of being the granddaughter of a Philippine statesman where things came easily to me, I wanted to be nobody and work for what I wanted and needed. I started without money, living out of motels because I didn't have credit, crying from hunger, etc. I am just happy that my son made a name for himself through hard work from when he was 16. He bought his home (which he is selling for his move) at 21, got financing for his car at 19 without any parental help, became the youngest technical trainer at 21, Design Team at 22 or 23, traveled for the Design Team and make presentations, appear on videos, TV (was guest in Fox and NBC morning news programs to give advice on beating summer frizz), magazines, etc., became a mentor. He was also the district and state winner in the Cosmetology division of Skills USA (when he was in high school), which earned him a trip to the Nationals. That was his very first competition, and he won. Some customers have given him really good reviews for fixing a lot of hair jobs that were botched by other salons, especially the color jobs. He is, however, a precision cut designer, so in NYC, he will specialize in cuts, not color, once he gets promoted from assistant to stylist.)

    0:59 I found it even harder to find a stable life-long lover in the PH than in the USA, especially if you bring her to the USA; enabling her to stop putting out and get a windfall of money. So, it all boils down to financial control over hypergamy; not love. Initially, I thought the PH was an oasis for romance, but I quickly realized it was only a mirage. I love my Western lifestyle, I just wish I could have a hot lover here who is not family oriented. Only the diving was more fun in the PH, but it's closer to get that in the Caribbean. Peace.

    • @WAdelstein
      @WAdelstein Před 3 lety

      As for looking for a hot lover people age out as does the hot lover. People get sick as does the hot lover so much for the life long hot lover. Cultural differences, disappointments all have to be dealt with as in every relationship. I’m with my wonderful Manila wife for decades. We go through sickness and health together. For a life long endeavor I suggest being well-paired more or less age wise and values ie finances, debt, religion, charity etc. just like a new car doesn’t stay a new car neither do people which is why there is love and friendship.

    • @bobbruce4135
      @bobbruce4135 Před 3 lety

      @@WAdelstein True. You speak of intimacy (being like minded) on important topics like income, debt, family, religion, etc. Intimacy is a necessary metric of romantic love. You need to find your match. Dr. Helen Fisher, behind the Chemistry and Match dating sites describes a Builder personality that is conventional, family oriented, usually religious, etc. I fall into a completely different category that is unconventional, free-thinking, STEM oriented, disinterested in family, etc. So, finding a suitable partner in SEA is very difficult. They mostly seek financial security for traditional gender roles and are often religious. It seems most who are successful, as you were, have more traditional thinking. Peace.
