Sorry for the re-upload, hope the audio is a bit better on this one...must be the late nights changing baby nappies or all those years of smelling burning cameras that have affected my brain. Enjoy the vid, I'm gonna take a nap now, phew!
Awesome job Kai. By the way do you have any links to your USB-C microphone adapter ? Because the official DJI one hasn't been released yet and the one for the Pocket doesn't work according to DJI. Thanks in advance 😄
Great job kai!
Good grief Kai is that why you r hanging around the Garage for a bit of peace and quiet #mancave
I can feel you, (being a new dad myself as well) 😂
Last few seconds of the clip has no sound still...
Dji now kinda scares me
imagine if they launch a Mirrorless full frame camera
they already have a Medium format one, called Hasselblad X1d :D
I was hoping gopro would also do that back in 2014.
but lets hope DJI steps up to the table so canon is at least forced to give us good features at a good price.
I really did not need that unique angle on the bicycle. 🤣
Now we know how nuts see the world 😂
the view from a nutshell
I thought it was genius, love that shot!
My initial reaction was... "No he did not... This is nuts!"
Groin-vision!
After all these years kai. You still make us laugh and keep us entertained with your exceptional quality videos.
Thanks for the great comedy and infotainment mate. Always helpful in my decision making.
Kind regards,
Pherris Hill
The bike shot was like Kai was sitting on my face but awesome video as always!
Already watched the first upload and still watching the 2nd because Kai
I love your videos, man. Well shot, informative and hilarious. Thanks.
@ 9:38 are you recording audio to the osmo action via usb-c or an external device?
I Motovlog so this is super important for me.
Did DJI send you the mic adapter? Or is that just one you got off of the internet?
acronym vapormax, stone island windbreaker and adidas.. kai is turning into a hypebeast
He matched adidas with nike
Stone island, dang expensive stuff 😁
I also like the fact that I can remove the lens protector and use ND filters!
You can do that on the HERO7 as well
Can you record on it whilst charging the battery with external battery ?
I think so, there's another review where a someone does something like a 15 hour time-lapse with it hooked to an external pack.
How did you get the rode mic to work as I’m going to buy one but most videos I’ve seen say external mics aren’t compatible with this
Hi Kai. Great video. What adaptor did you use for the external Rode Micro? As I couldn't tell if it was the DJI one for the Pocket. Cheers, Dave.
I am curious too!
David Harry same here, want to know more abt the external mic
Fake
OMyDayz! dude you're still making videos. didn't know all this time. Haven't seen you since DigitalRev days!!! damn those were the days!!!
Glad to see you're still around.
Good Luck
Is there an additional audio adapter needed to add your own external mic?
Hi Kai. Great vid.... but how did you plug in the mic? Regards Richard
Yeah how? What adapter used?
What audio adapter did you use? ;) for the Rode mic. Looks non DJI?
Super classy and elegant review as always. Really love this
I still dont understand the benefit on the front screen on an action cam unless you are using it for vlogging. Most of the mounts will be attached to your head or body facing away from you right?
GoPro: "We're gonna make the most portable drone"
DJI: "Oh no you won't!"
GoPro: Uhh...We're known for our awesome action cameras anyway!"
DJI: "Is that so??"
GoPro: "oh ffs!!"
KG Productions 🤣
Gopro: Karma gimble wil-
DJI: OSMO Pocket!
Gopro: Hypersmoo-
DJI: we did it better
Gopro: WE ARE THE ONLY AMERICAN COMPANY WITH 360 Cam-
Garmin has entered the chat

Garmin: Where’s your accelerometer, barometer, HR sensors?
Gopro: *gulp* GPS enough?
another canned review with no mention of timewarp, gopro's big feature
So many foolish comments, This doesn't beat out the GoPro, and Hero 8 is around the corner...
one youtuber spilled a clue that the Hero 8 is coming soon. It looks like GoPro saw DJI coming. I reckon, the Hero 8 will be as good as the DJI but $50 more expensive.
So not sure if you'll respond but need to know - how did you get the external mic to work? are you using a generic adaptor or one from DJI? Help! D:
Thanks Kai!
I'd love to know this. Did you find out?
Love your reviews and videos. Your easy going style is great.
Nice Review!! Can I use this camera in 2,7k 60FPS?
How exactly are you using a external mic with the Osmo action? it needs a proprietary adapter from all I have seen.
Probably recorded audio independently and then synced it in post
Pleeeeease tell us what USB-C adapter you used that actually worked!
Yoris Wilson Same! I don’t wanna spend extra for the DJI one!
What did you use to adapt for the external mic input? It looked like a random usb-c to 3.5mm off the shelf kind of converter. Thanks!
Nice comparisons there Kai, thanks!
Good work DJI & Kai 👏
5:13 DJI & GoPro are now buddies oh schoo sweet😜
What USB-C to TRS adapter are you using?
ya I would like to know that as well :-)
Seriously! I need to know that too! This osmo action with external mic sounds rich! Also so smooth! I'll bet if you put the osmo action on a gimbal it would be so smooth it would film like an out-of-body experience! Probably drip with melted butter! dammmmmmmm I need one!
@@bryanauer It seems that DJI has an official adapter for it(although it's quite a long one)
+100 in this. Is it the official one? Doesn't look like it?
@@hayasakaleung5525 40 us, crazy
Does this camera fit into the GoPro mounts?? Looks like it could
Great review, Kai 😊and fun as usual👍
I thought the skateboard is a Potato Jet reference.
Now we wait for Camera Conspiracy to do his thing seeing that this one has better stabilization than the Sony X3000, plus with a flippy, err front screen,
He'll find fault with the edge-to-edge sharpness because he loves him some blurry background. Other than that, I can't see anything CC can possibly kick about. Pardon me now while I pop out for some popcorn.
Aba updated si kapadyak hahahaha
LoL, I immediately thought the same...was just waitin for Kai to bust a kick flip, hehehe...Poor Gene though, Love you Potato Jet, hope you're back to 110% soon!!
Looks pretty dark / contrast-y though (08:45). Shadows pretty dark, with strong highlights. Dynamic range or colour grading issue?
it was graded at that footage i guess
will be fun to experiment with grading the dji footage to match better rigs. I'm up for the challenge tho...
Idk why you don't like the contrast. Maybe you just don't have an oled screen to appreciate the deep blacks.
It's indeed super contrasty. Overexposing the whites almost while having close to none detail in the black. That's not that great tbh.
Thanks for the video review. What are you using for audio?
Can the DJI Osmo Action be used as a webcam like the GoPro Hero 7 can?
hey Camera Conspiracies! the perfect camera is here;-D it has Selfie screen, great Stabilisation, mic Input and that for 350$? Seems the GoPro has now real Competition. Hey Kai! You forgot something... we want to see how it handle the low light Situations too ;)
it does not have mic input need adapter....which they don't even have yet.
Waiting for the CC take on this
:-D I think it cant be worse than sony RX0 M2 and go pro 7, Im interested with this new Action cam from Dji @@Johanniscool
Except no blown out background. Which is an immediate no for him.
it's Low light is better than the GoPro.
Go check it on Peter McKinnon's comparison.
You sound just like the British top gear show host
Antonio Claudio Michael because HK was once a british colony some years ago
It's because he's from Norwich.
a great video! Please, how did you manage to connect an external microphone to the osmo action, any USB adapter or how?
How did you connect Rode mic?
Did u have to use adapter?
Cheers..
He didn't attach it.
@@JamesMatthewGallagher so its BS!!
@@sisbroshou3786 Yes. First, note that he's wearing a lavaliere mic. Also, the sound on the Rode isn't the slightest bit affected by him waving the Rode around when he claims it's plugged into the Osmo. 9:38
I love you. Congrats on your new child. 😍🥰
Congrats Kai, kids are fun. Take plenty of photos.. !
Does it have a time and date stamp you can superimpose on the footage
Great little video really interested in the new camera on the external mike did you have to have an adapter that was almost as big as the camera or did you just plug it straight in and what fitting were you using
Hi Kai, great video, thank you for the effort!
In 09:35 you mention that you are using a Rode Microphone in combination with the Osmo Action, while you are (I guess) showing a third party adapter. As it apparently worked, would you be so kind to post, which kind of third party adapter it was? Thank you very much in advance!
Disappointing he's not answered this. Did you happen to find out?
@@AndyCrowther Supposedly it is not working with third party adapters. It doesn't even work with the DJI Osmo Pocket Adapter that was released a while ago. So DJI might release another adapter for the DJI Osmo Action hopefully soon.
@@jsyk3 Thanks, but if that's the case, how did Kai do it?
@@AndyCrowther used his dslr audio
*** @ 9:35 Lets take a vote. Who thinks the Rode Mic is functioning or is it everyone just imagining it??
I also have the same feeling bro🤣
Well you can't hear the screaming children in the background as much so it's quite obvious the Rode mic.
Can you connect a comms unit to it via bluetooth? that would be the final GoPro killer particularly for motovloggers
do you recommend the Osmo action over the new go pro hero 8? thanks
How long was it before you dinged the upper corner of the camera? Hah! Great video KW!
The crop on the DJI rock steady is substantially more than the go pro hyper smooth.
What 3.5mm to usb-c audio cable did you use? It actually worked and I'm thoroughly impressed
Absolutely great video!
I'm holding out until someone makes a good alternative to the discontinued GoPro Hero Session. I love the Session form factor but it needs a tiny color screen and updated image stabilization and quality
Any size screen you could fit onto a Hero Session form factor would be way to small to even compose with
@@LashanR It would be better than no screen at all. Plus it's possible compose with the 1.4" selfie screen on the Osmo. The rear of the Session is 1.75" diagonal so it could be possible to add a 1.4" screen back there. And I'm not staying the session alternative needs to be the exact same size, it can be a bit bigger accommodate a screen.
RunCam5 coming soon. have a look at that
That footage is more stable than the osmo pocket!
use 4th axis gimbal for pocket and you cannot beat that
lol, then use the 4axis on the osmo action...
Its just more compressed footage. Faking greater stabilization.
@@krane15 compressed?
@@AlexanderSmith600 Zoomed in. Aka compression.
What usb-c to 3.5mm adapter are you using. Lots of people would like to know!
Reupload? I'll just play the whole thing in the BG, and watch something else.
Also, is there a mode to shoot in a flat profile?
That camera shot through the crotch of the bicycle 😂
10:12
🖐🏿🤑👍🏿
that lil segment of yours enough to have the GoPro shareholders jumping off a balcony soon. ⚰
🤯
Between this one and the pocket, which one would be better for vlogging?
so what if you put it on a gimbal with rock steady turned on?
The real comparison is in low light condition.
@H P Seen other reviews like Peter McKinnon. And it's safe to say DJI performs way better in lowlights than GoPro. And let's not forget to add that, the details of the footage it captures is wayyyy sharper.
Thier both bad in low light unfortunatly, also changing your settings before you shoot has alot to do with saturation and better low light vid
You're like the Harry Potter of Camera. You're a Camera Wizard Kai! Yer e wiz-ard!
What about the dynamic range and exposure compensation ? Are they any good ?
With what adapter did you connect the Mic to the Osmo Action?
GoPro should lower the price to 300USD or release GoPro 8.
PLEASE- WHAT MIC Adapter works?? Thank you.
The audio actually looks to be coming from his lavaliere mic. Notice how he jostles the Rode mic around and the sound doesn't change one bit. Maybe he was HOPING that the 3.5 > USB-C adapters would work by the time the video and/or the product came out?
hi Kai, good vid mate. does she have a thread on the lens to attach a filter (CPL)?? cheers
What did you use to plug in the external mic ?
At slow mo, you should have dropped the camera in the beer!!!!!
Most of these reviews miss talking about the supporting app for these action cameras. I've been using GoPro's app on my ipad pro, and DJI's on my Android, and personally I've found GoPro's way easier to pull files from (sets up a wifi connection automatically) than DJIs (using it with the Osmo Mobile 2). That is a big part of the usability of these devices, as messing with micro SD cards is a bit of a pain. The other thing is the field of view is wide enough (even in linear mode) on GoPro, its pretty easy to "VLOG" and know that youre in the shot. with the screen on all the time I can't imagine the DJI's battery would last. I'd also like to see if the DJI produces any noticeable artifacts using rocksteady in fast changing frames - I've been very impressed with the Hero7 Black's quality, and the stabilization is fantastic.
Love your style! Great review!
Nice review Kai! How does it do for still photos? What resolution does it shoot stills at please?
Kai really prepared a bunch of videos for our amusement, while he's taking some time off to take care of Baby W Mk II.
I’ll wait until this is put through the Keiki beach shorebreak test by our local surf photogs. Average walking around and riding a bike meh.... I need a real durability/quality test.
Lemme guess cause you're soooo extreme.
Does the skeleton case connection point jive with after market accessories? I have a ton of accessories from my Hero 3. Don't really want re-buy everything.
Excellent comparison! Thanks!
I feel like the Go Pro footage looked quite a bit better colorwise
Yeah, Gopro have more better colors.
It is, but its not graded. And the bending image is better on DJI
when you think about grading your footage you want to be as flat as possible for dynamic range to play with in post
@@Expertslaunch That's true but a flat color profile should be available as an option, with a 'standard', more vivid profile as the default. I'd say less than 10% of people who'll buy this camera will grade the footage.
Well because Kai use cinelike color presets?
CAPTION PLEASEE.. IM WATCHING FROM THE OFFICE
Or wear some headphones. I think your caps lock may be stuck.
Great review and comparison! The dji sure piqued my interest, but the colors seem so faded out next to the GoPro right?
And what kind of mounts/accessories does it need? Seems almost able to reuse GoPro ones?
Awesome video! I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these 📷
I agree dji osmo action is a competition killer
I wonder how dji disassembled a gopro7 black and studied its hardware. 😅
Probably using a screwdriver.
Does the IS work when shooting slow motion?
What happens if you mounted DJI OSMO onto DJI handheld gimbal?
Time will tell whether it’s as tough as the GoPro.. oh and everyone’s slags the GoPro then people buy copies of it like this ... I think dji have just killed their own osmo pocket 😂
though and tough.. One small drop on the floor (gopro 6 black)and the damned casing broke. Also the lens-front-cap-thing got bendt slightly out of its seating.
Still works of course but i doubt it will take any moisture anymore.
Jori Diculous oh that’s not good .. mines been really abused and it’s still going strong
yeah, a tad bummed. Guess it must have hit the floor harder then it looked, it was on a 3 axis gimble when i dropped it. :|
Still. it works fine, no artifacts in video/photos, so its not leaking light. Not even scratched the lens or screen..
I wonder if GoPro can increase the smoothness output if they increase the crop?
Currently HyperSmooth takes about 5% and delivers a good result.
The DJI Action definitely looks smoother but you are losing quite a lot of the frame to achieve that result.
On a side note, not a fan of the DJI Actions design. It looks like a cheap knock off of the GoPro. Get rid of that typeface!
GoPro says 5% but I think a few Tubers have proven it's closer to 15%.
@@KenMyers It's 10% cropped (hero 7 black). I think another review of the osmo said it's 18-22% based on resolution.
@@KenMyers That's interesting. I only really use mine in linear mode and the hypersmooth crop seems minimal (but it can probably get the resolution it needs in the crop from fish eye to linear).
@@NWGR I've seen that without RockSteady enabled on the Osmo Action, the FOV is narrower than with the GoPro without HyperSmooth turned on. So I think there's potential for a larger crop on the GoPro while still retaining a wider FOV?
i fon't see a thread on the bottom. Is there a way to mount a handle so I won't have to buy a dji osmo pocket too?
Great video! Could you share the name of the mic adapter you are using, please? Thanks!
I was seriously going to buy a GoPro for summer then DJI slaps me with this
have u seen those colours tho
sebastian musumeci I can color grade them.
@@toyojin thats nice then
Most asked question: external microphone
How did you attach the rode mic to the dji if there isn't a headphone jack
so what adapter you used for your mic?? did you get the DJI one or a 3rd party, everbody needs to know. or we have the same bricks as GOPRO
The image quality on the GoPro still looks better
Kai: I am a healthy man don't judge the book by its cover
Me: Ahan
Kai: walks likes an old man
Me: ............
Really nice comparison.... I'm left wondering if the stabilization isn't quite an apples to apples comparison since it looks like the DJI crops off quite a bit more. It stands to reason with software-based stabilization that a bigger crop should allow for more stable resulting footage. I wonder if GoPro could simply update their firmware to allow for a bigger crop in the stabilization, and match the results? Or better yet, add a GUI feature that allows the user to adjust the crop amount for the in-camera stabilization....
Crop comparison video here czcams.com/video/vMD8l4487Ps/video.html
What is that mic adapter?
But OSMO color is so poor ?
I noticed that too. Color is not as vibrant as the Sony and GoPro 7.
But I am sure it grades pretty well, at least the osmo pocket footage does.
@@sonnydi3p Kai clearly noted that he was using the D-Cinelike (flat, low contrast) color profile rather than the Standard color mode in the Osmo Action. The advantage is you'll get more detail in the shadows and when color grading have a more cinematic look. If you don't use that mode, you'll have nice saturated colors.
Jay Gilmore ahhh... okay good to know. I know nothing about video stuff. I just like to watch Kai's contents.
@@JayGilmore Still when he uses it for selfie vloging his face is really overexposed... the sky is nice and blue. It would be nice to have a proper test of dynamic range between the two!
Kai threw that DJI thing in the storage unit after this video haha
Great stuff!!!Greetings from Greece!!
do you have any links to your USB-C microphone adapter ? Because the official DJI one hasn't been released yet and the one for the Pocket doesn't work
