  • Today we're comparing the currently top end of the action camera world! The GoPro Hero 8 Black VS DJI Osmo Action. Both of these cameras are really the only innovations inside of the action camera world. Both can record in up to 4k 60fps, both have awesome stabilization, and both are pretty darn durable.
But is the GoPro worth the extra $100?
    Lets find out!

IF I had to choose between getting all the extra features, including ones that dont matter to me and compromising on the final cost or specs, and choosing to have less at a lower price or better specs, then I will choose the latter over the former every time. I can choose to not buy the addons and pay the subscription for cheaper accessories and unlimited storage (which is what I need, not the "insurance" they offer) for a reasonable sub-price. The only bit I don't like is the compromise on being water-tight in order to attach the addons, even if you dont plan to take it into the water, that protection is necessary in poor weather where something could creep its way inside.
For every person whose opinion is to agree, it is another opinion to disagree. Doesn't make either more correct. Everyday Dad says himself that he has his own priorities in an Action Camera. for me, a front screen is useless because it will never point at my face so I have no need for a framing screen and as the camera will attach to my head, I have bigger worries than a damaged lens in a situation that can crack it.
The hero 8 seems built for those who opted not to get the 7, rather than those who would upgrade religiously with each new product. The Hero 9 is likely to be the next game changer for GoPro and it will be interesting to see what they come up with for that (hopefully perfect watertightness regardless of mods or not) My Hero 8 came cheaper than the OSMO Action, which decided it easier for me since I can't guarantee either in Low-light conditions.

Great review, thank you! I agree with you: I have the Hero 7 Black and dropped it while bicycling in Belgium. When I got back to my hotel room, I simply replaced the cracked lens cover with a new one ($19.99) and voila! This ain't the case with the Hero 8 Black, and again I agree: I don't like having to invest in additional gear to protect my lens cover, or GoPro's insurance plan (WTH?!). I was thinking that if I ever bought another action cam, it would be the Osmo Action, which has a replaceable lens cover, and I also like the front screen as well for framing video/photos. The hero 8 goes into the dive case with the lens cover on. But i feel yall pain there with the new design 😬

When you were doing your vlog at the end with both side by side, you can see the GoPro colors are more vibrant vs the Osmo. That being said, you're right, the second screen is what makes it if you are a vlogger or are doing anything else other than action shots. Based on that and yoru recomendation Im going with the Osmo. Thanks!

Thanks Dad! The skin tone is a real consideration for people like us in the UK because more often than not, it’s cloudy and I noticed that ‘waxy’ over saturated look on the Hero 7 when the sun comes out ...... Another GP advantage is the flat profile with dial in colour temp or native. Not sure how that works on the Osmo.

Great Review. I have the GoPro 7, DJI Action (still in a box) and the Hero 8 on order. I think the stabilization from what I have seen is still better on the Hero 8 vs the DJI action. I also think for vlogging the Hero 8 will be a better option even if you have to pay more. As far as I know, the DJI action doesn't have an external mic capability yet.
Another point is even in your video, the skin colors look much better on the Hero 8 than they do with the Action.

I like and entirely appreciate the honest comparison and I gave it a well-deserved thumbs up and subscribed as well. This kind of review that looks past the hype and breaks it down to real-world usage is all too rare these days and the positives of the Osmo speak for themselves. I'm still going to be getting a Hero8 and NOT getting an Osmo Action (or maybe I'll be getting both after all eventually) but since at this moment I own neither, the one I choose will be the Hero 8 Black mainly for the color tones seem better and the audio quality is nicer, and I intend to never destroy the lens (so I won't ever need to replace it anyway like most people won't) and it's well within my budget, so cost is not really a concern.

  • @dougmorato
    @dougmorato Před 4 lety +5

hmmmm there's some misinformation here at 3:00. Yes, DJI offers 4k 100Mb but it is in h.264 whereas GoPro's 75Mb (using pro mode) is in h.265. HEVC (h.265)is a newer file compression format which basically gives the same quality in a smaller file size.
The question here is whether GoPro has adopted the same older file format as DJI's or it has improved the h.265 file format. I hope you can make it clear here for us.
    Thanks!!

Great and very useful comparison, thank you! I have the GP7B and yeah I love the replaceable lens cover - first day bicycling in Belgium and I dropped and broke that cover, but simply replaced it and the camera withstood the drop beautifully. Really bad decision on GoPro’s part to change this smart feature in the 8.
I think v2 of the Osmo Action will have a wider FOV or option and even nicer color profile.
I’ve have had some firmware issues with my Black 7 like plenty of other users, like the voice commands feature not always working, or not being able to turn off the camera manually and having to pull the battery to turn it off. The camera’s strengths however make these glitches more tolerable.
I won’t be upgrading to the GP8 Black, but will wait for the Osmo Action 2 instead.
    Again, awesome review, thanks!

Great review. I’ve been thinking about adding an “action” camera to my still and video collection and with a camera show coming soon this review was both very timely... and tremendously informing.
Coming from a camera background one of the things that caught my ear/eye was your mention of replaceable filters (ND) filters. This would be a huge plus imo, especially for on the spot demos of the effects of each in still photography. Hadn’t really thought this would be an option with these tiny cameras.
I do a lot of coaching and have wanted a smaller , portable (pocketable) camera... like these I guess... to use with my athletes... instead of wearing down the battery on my phone! What do you think of using the Osmo for coaching? Most of time I can be reasonably close to the athlete, and the sport is not an action one, although either the Osmo or GP8 look like they would be able to handle it.
One thing that might bother me a bit is a comment I read here about the Osmo not having a sound jack? I noticed you seemed to be using only the built in sound, or do you have a hidden mic somewhere that you sync with the video?
Again, great review... you’ve saved me hours of research and taken me very quickly in my A-Z research to M already. I feel like I’m half way there!

a good video. Your review is impressive and you say some things that others don't say. I also think the new gopro 8 has been created for me to pay for insurance because the lens can break. However, the osmo action still has some unresolved problems, the worst problem is the front screen delay. Finally, I have almost completely discarded these cameras when I met the 360 cameras. It would be great if you made a video with advantages and disadvantages of 360 cameras like the insta360 one x, compared to osmo action and gopro, I know they are different cameras but for real use (not as a sports camera), what are their advantages and disadvantages? I'm confused about all this. Besides, even gopro is going to launch its gopro max soon and some already say that it makes no sense to buy a gopro 8 (except for sports camera)

However, that would require shipping my old one back to the us and having the new cam shipped over here and aside from the wait, the added costs would start to get a bit pricey. Plenty of people trying to offload their "old" hero 7 blacks to upgrade and i have seen those for 400 as well so I'm tempted to go that route. Full price tho i just think there's no way to justify spending that much more for the gp. I think the lack of removable lens cover on the h8b is a huge huge misstep and pushes me towards a used h7 or an osmo action and currently I'm leaning towards a nice new product considering action cameras can be subject to rough treatment.
    Appreciate this video.

How can we add an ND filter to that flat front lens? I like my screw on nd filters on the Osmo but it loses its waterproof ness. Hmm

Fishme7 don’t like the idea about the batteries either...they fit but not in an ideal manner neither about the accesorios not fitting the 8

Does the hero 8 have a stream feature where you can connect the camera to a computer, and stream the audio/video out to a live service? I know that the Osmo Action does not (and fans are anxiously awaiting THAT update.. assuming it's coming). That might make the difference for vloggers.

Hey ... thanks for this. you, literally, hit everything I've been thinking for two weeks. First ~ have the shirt, wear the shirt, love the shirt! 'Nuf said. Second ~ spot on about the lens. I had to buy the "Plus" plan out of fear ... and because I'm not going to step back to the 7. Third ~ not quite the media release hype. Because of the modest/poor low light performance in general, and specifically with Hypersmooth 2.0, I still need a gimbal ~ but, because they made it larger, it doesn't fit any of my gimbals. Ugh! I may have to buy the Osmo Action. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your delivery and quirky touches.

Didn’t see this in your comments...Quick Select is the QS button on the left side of the DJI Osmo Action. You can set up what appears to be as many of them as you want.
