2023 BMW 5 Series G60 Unveiling - 520i First Impressions

- BMW has pulled the wraps off an all-new 5 Series generation dubbed the G60. The big news is that it's bigger than before and available as the fully-electric i5. The vehicle we were shown at the local unveiling in Romania was the base 520i model without the M pack, but it actually look pretty good and it was well received by those present at the event. Its exterior design is sure to polarize opinions, but its interior is stunning and BMW say it's just as engaging and fun to drive as the smaller 3 Series.

Holy shit now I’m so proud of my G30 lol
May very well be the last good-looking 5 Series...
I think the height really is the problem with this car.
Yeah, but at least it's reasonably spacious inside.
No, it's the frontal overhang.
Same as the 7 series it grew too much and leads to awkward proportions.
no one push you to buy it. so no worry 😂😂😂
@@mart_en You do actually have a point. The wheelbase has grown less than the overall length. The front overhang is indeed increased over the G30...
@@user-bv8yz3wx4c but when you have been buying 5 series throughout your adult life, least to say, one is pissed about such a design miscarriage!😡🤬 still a big thank you for
The baseline spec (chrome trim) looks so much better than the pesky m-sport trim.
I normally wouldn't agree, but that is true for the G60.
BMW have clearly hired actual clowns to work as designers for the M-division, specifically the M-division havent come up with a single good looking spec of regular cars or M-Cars for years.
@@TheGamingNorwegian The sad truth...
Poorly designed. From the hideous door handles to the weird rear and the uninspiring interior. Previous generations are much more impressive and elegant.
The G30 looks so pretty and elegant compared to this, so yes, I wholeheartedly agree.
If this is what the future looks like, I prefer the past! F10 and G30! ❤
Same.
@@OneTireFire Great Review! but do you have a title error? It says '2023' BMW 5 series :)
@@ToddRGuy Thanks for watching!
Are you referring to the year?
@@OneTireFire Yes, indeed. This is the 2024 BMW 5 series, correct?
Well, no. This is a car launched in 2023 and will hit the market in a couple months' time. We in Europe don't use model year in the same way they may do in America, where this car would indeed be the 2024 MY 5 Series :)
Ambient lightning in ICE version is different compared to i5 ? I don't see glass-style light bars in this one :/)
I noticed that too and I forgot to ask. Looking through the configurator, it looks like the crystal bar comes as standard on the i5, but you can't specify it on other variants, not even as an option. I guess it's BMW's way of distinguishing gas-burning and electric versions of the car.
@@OneTireFireI found some info in 'product highlights' presentation where it's said that 'light interaction bar' is option. So maybe it is just configurator mistake and it will be optional for ice versions. At least i hope so)
@@FS328 I'll definitely ask when I get the chance.
Where is the elegance BMW?
The G30 sedan is elegant :)
Hi how is the vegan leather is it very soft i currently have the nappa leather would you say the vegan leather is as good?
It actually felt good. Defintely better than what BMW used to put in its cars in the previous decade.
Why would a sedan be low? They have to carry passengers. What's significant about the profile is long hood short deck, which signifies performance (Jaguar leaping cat) & BMW introduced 80 years ago with I6 328.
Well, it doesn't have to be low-low, but it needs to strike a balance between looking good from the side and still offering good passenger room. It's not like older BMWs that do have the lower body aren't roomy inside. This car is tall because it also needs to house a battery pack in its floor.
Is this the phytonic blue metallic colour?
No, it’s Tanzanite metallic, a BMW Individual colour.
No 6-cylinder engines. I remember a few years ago, Porsche had a great idea of making 4-pots only, for the Boxster and Cayman … and sales fell off a cliff until … lo and behold, they're back to 6-pots!
That's true, but I don't think BMW will add a six-pot for Europe back into the range. It will force buyers to get one of the PHEV variants (one of which has a six-cylinder).
@@OneTireFire Well … we'll see how that strategy goes.
@@juststuff5216 Indeed....
The base 520 is better looking than the M60?!? Those stupid black bumper paints on higher trim looks ugly compared to this.
Yeah, I guess it is better looking. One thing I like about the G60 is that it doesn't need the M sport pack to look good.
Overall I love it. But as you mentioned the most downgrade is the height from the profile. It looks too high(((
Like I said in the video, it looks better when you see it in person. However, for me, I think that not only does it look tall and not at all sleek from the side, but the front fenders seem way too tall and the hood is at an angle like it would be in a front-wheel drive car. Overall I don't think it's quite as elegant as the outgoing G30.
Didn't realise this new 5 is taller😳? (I guess the black bits surrounding the bottom of the car did the slimming trick on me!😅) I love most the side profile of this new 5; looks younger, sporty & slim (thanks again to the bottom black bits - much slimming on i5🤩)! Front is ok (thank god the nose!😅) but the back side will grow on me in time😮💨.
The G30 is 1,479 mm tall while the new G60 is 1,515 mm tall, but visually, the latter looks even taller. It's not just the blacked out sills that add to the height - it looks like the entire car (even the greenhouse) is taller.
@@OneTireFire Thanks 4 info. Untill bev batt is advanced enough 2 b smaller, this 5 is deff a great collection not just being 1st bev 5 but the tallest 5 too!😚
why no interaction bar in the G60???
That's only in the EV.
I think it looks best from the side profile. Front looks a little too upright
The front is definitely upright, but I think that from the side profile, it still looks a bit too tall. My favourite angle is a rear three-quarter perspective.
@@OneTireFire do you think the rear is a little inspired by the Camry?😝
BMW sheer design disaster. 😂
This seems to be a popular point. I wouldn't go that extreme, but yes, the design is not classically elegant like some older BMWs were.
Looks like an SUV the front is way way too high
It's what everybody seems to be saying about it...
@@OneTireFire I hope the M5 will look better. Hopefully this design can grow on me later on
@@tonywong303 I hope so too. I, for instance, didn't love the E60 5 Series when it came out, but now I think it looks quite good, so maybe this will happen for the G60 in a few years' time too.
I am a very happy owner of the 5 series before this one.
Holy ***, I find this kinda..kinda less sporty even after looking at M package. If they want to reach the same front line of Rolls Royce (their partners)... Well.. Not for me. I would go to the new series 3 instead. Where are those nice sporty lines and lights? Come on.
I also think it looks less sporty...
The real problem with ALL BMW's latey are their huge frontal overhangs.
The 7 series kept the same wheelbase but grew by 16 cm in length.
The new 5 series grew by 10 cm ! in length but the wheelbase only by 2 cm.
So why do all new BMW's have such overlong noses ?
Maybe it's a safety thing, I don't know. I will try to ask and find out; I'll update this comment if I ever find out (from an official source).
@@OneTireFire Thank you for the effort !
I am curious about that strange development of late BMW'S since Mercedes actually proved the opposite.
The new S class has a shorter overhang than it's predecessor and the same applies for the new E class. The wheelbase grew more than the actual length of the car, which leads to shorter overhangs.
@@mart_en Yes, and this has a very positive effect on the way the S Class looks. BMW seems to be going in the opposite direction for some reason and I can't understand why.
on previes looks like 1-series
Looks a bit like the 2 Series Gran Coupe, if you ask me :)
@@OneTireFire yes, exactly 2 series
Looks horrible, a mix between 2 series grand coupe and 6 series
Yeah, there's definitely some of the 2 GC's weirdly high proportions, especially when you look at it from the side.
it has no ambient light !?😳
It didn't look like it. Maybe it was just turned off. I didn't think to check. But the car surely has it and you should also be able to add the crystal strip across the dash.
I am glad I drove one of the best designed BMW of all time, the E46. This now is some really atrocious design by BMW. I would get the 3 series again, though. Still looks spot on.
I would argue that E92 was one of the best looking designs
I agree that the E9X series is one of the best-looking modern BMW designs. The LCI models have aged extremely well.
not so aggressive anymore :) bo.. i think hyundai rocks right now
It's really aggressive when viewed from the back, but the front is kind of tall and strangely proportioned. Hyundai's design department is indeed owning it right now, you are right definitely right about that.
Where TF is the exhaust?
Hidden under the bumper, I guess.
@@OneTireFire ☹️ not cool
Reverse lights were put too low!
That does look a tad weird, yes.
Making the cars slower
It's quicker than the old one, according to BMW. The G60 520i accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds compared to 7.9 for the G30 520i. The new car is slightly heavier but it's also more powerful.
New 5,perfect👍
It has an amazing interior!
Wen drive?
Late 2023, hopefully.
@One Tire Fire I mean wen test drive for journalist's?
@@DennisDinges Oh, I don't think it's been set yet. The car in the video is pre-production and full production will commence in a couple of months' time. I would say the journalist first drive event will take place in the autumn/early winter time.
Sucks to be a gearhead in Europe. Only 4 cylinders.😅😅
Yeah, the only six-cylinder for Europe will be in a (heavy and dull) plug-in hybrid.
0:36 @ BMW was not worth dusting off the engine for this premiere👎 its like serving a nice meal with dirty cutlery and glasses🫣
You have an eye for details :)
Nice front grill and tail lights are nice but the silver trim makes it look cheap.. and that embossed I5 on the C-pillar looks cheap too.. The way the silver trim goes vertical looks cheap and stupid..
Maybe these details will grow on us over time…
Why don't you mention that there is no MOONROOF anymore in Europe and other markets! (only available in the US)🤔☹️ BMW has a strange regional sale policy. but stupid inside camera for selfies and filming is available🤯
I didn't know about this. I'll look into it...
BMW is completey shedding their performance brand/luxory image. Plastic seats, no sunroof, cheap tablet laden interior.
I live in Europe and I have sunroof, so.. What?
This car is stunning!!
Stunningly bad
It has its good sides, but it's not as nice to look at as the G30, F10 and even the E60...
@@OneTireFire you’re right!
Looks like a Skoda , i think G30 is the last BMW 5 series.
I really like the G60's rear end and some of the details, but in terms of its proportions, it's the least sexy 5 Series for a few generations (maybe ever...). I do think its look will grow on us in time and it's also heavily dependent on spec and color.
E class bye-bye
What do you mean? You would have this over the new E?
This must be the ugliest 5 series of all 5 series iterations we have ever witnessed from BMW
Maybe it will grow on us just like the E60 (which was also controversial when launched) did?
@@OneTireFire it truly is an insult to compare the baby E60 with this hideous Peugeot look-alike BMW. If you cover the grills/bmw logo you could easily claim it’s a french car, not a german luxury car. Sad, just sad. I can bet BMW will revamp it at the LCI iteration following incoming atrocious customers’ outrage.
@@Ario2601 I said "maybe" :)
La voiture est trop haute SuV berline
Vraiment!
What a masterpiece!
From some angles, yes 😁
Wow. Does not look like a Chinese Knock-off of a Tesla. How refreshing.
It's quite unique looking, but I'm still not convinced I'd call it pretty.
this stabilizers ( two bars) in the engine room ( 520i) look very cheap for this expensive car ;😂
BMW does this for all its "base" models.
So bad lmao. it's absolutely hideous.
It's still better than the 7 Series, so at least that's something...
Its amazing vehicle.
I'm sad that electric vehicles are taking over
This is the progress that's being pushed on us. We have to make the best of it... somehow.
But honestly this car front is waaaaaaay bettter than G8X bmw.
It is, yes :)
Love BMW as a brand, I own a BMW. This generation looks horrific, as far as I am concerned. The bulky feeling rims, the weird, square/box-y looking back end with the weird grey inserts on the bottom left and right sides, the small size of the front and back lights which make the car seem like it's squinting... I don't know aesthetically, it feels like a total flop for me. I'm astounded this was greenlighted into production. Guess it's gonna be one of those generations (like the Batman one) where I'm gonna give it a miss. Terrible job, BMW, terrible job design-wise.
I also am a BMW fan and I own a BMW and I have to agree that the current generation isn’t the best in terms of design. I do like the 2 Series coupe, 3 Series, 8 Series and the Z4, but that’s about it. I don’t think the current design will age quite as well as the ones you mentioned. We’ll just have to wait and see.
The Exhaust is a fuc**** joke 😂😂
Yeah, BMW did it better for other models.
Rear bmw e28 tuned 😂
I can totally see it now :)))
It’s a nice car.
It has its good points, yes.
It's gorgeous!!!
@@easyaussietarget3355 From certain angles, yes :)
More piggy 🐷 nose
The era of the shark-nosed BMW seems very distant when looking at some of its new models.
car looks ugly as all BMWs lately. No more BMW for me.
The Vision Neue Klasse shows a glimmer of hope for future production models.
Omg,what an ugly design!BMW,what the f...k is going on?!
Maybe the design will grow on us as the E60's did.
Check that the ICE 520i has no exhaust. Thanks bmw you went on the same path as audi and mercedes. Fakery. - From a BMW driver
Plastic piano black car Very LOW COST CAR
I think there are other options thankfully.
