  • Installing and removing a scooter crank
    First off thanks for everyone’s patience. We are absolutely slammed with work and short staffed: so these videos have taken the backseat. We squeeze them in when time allows!
    Today we go the basics on removing a crankshaft from your common 2 stroke scooter, and installing a new one. There are several different methods, and tools, but this is one way of doing it. Remember to always have clean surfaces. Don’t reuse old c clips either. DO NOT use a press to join the cases together; this is far too common, and damages the crankshaft. You can either sweat the bearings in, Or press them in: I tried to make this video as short as possible but it was pretty difficult with all the details. Thanks for watching and remember we’re your number one source for parts, tools and advice!

    I'm so glad I found you guys! I need an honest answer. I have a 1989 Yamaha Riva Jog CG50cc that ran awesome until recently my whole variator assembly on the crankshaft detonated and the back tire siezed. Shockingly my drive belt didn't rip and is still in perfect shape! But in the process the metal pieces chewed up chip marks on the splines of the crank where the variator sits. Should I do a total variator and crank rebuild or should I just junk it as a parts bike? I have a 1984 riva jog CE50cc 1st generation and a 2005 Honda Metropolitan that I'd rather mess with but let me know! Thanks 😅

    problem is, with that tool you are forcing the inner and outer ring apart from eachother, and that is gonna create tiny indentations in the bearing, where the running surfaces of the balls are. my method of choice is to heat the bearings & freeze the crank, assemble the crankshaft, and THEN heat the block halves and then assemble the whole thing together. during the assembly I don't use any pulling tools, I quickly tighten all screws and then all it needs is one small longitudinal tap with a metal hammer to ease out the stress.

    • @Scooterswapshop
      @Scooterswapshop  Před 4 lety +2

      Yea everyone has a different method. I will say I have been doing this for over 8 years and have never once had any failures or issues. I also don’t like heating the bearings up red hot personally.

    • @YszapHun
      @YszapHun Před 4 lety +1

      @@Scooterswapshop not red hot, but the perfect amount of heat is when water droplets bounce off the surface (I believe 180-200°C when that happens, it doesnt hurt material structure). tell me that it's unscientific, but have you ever seen an infrared thermometer that can read on shiny surfaces? ha...! everybody does it on their own practice, I even know people who assemble everything cold turkey, with pullers and presses.

      Good chance either the bearing didn’t go into the case all the way. Or the crank didn’t get fully seated into each bearing. This is where the hot and cold method can fall short, and the puller comes in handy
