- LYRICS:
In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
With an aching in my heart and my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home and I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain with no place to go
Out on runway number nine big 707 is set to go
But I'm stuck here in the grass where the pavement never grows
Now the liquor tasted good and the women all were fast
Well there she goes my friend she's a rolling down at last
Hear the mighty engines roar see the silver wing on high
She's away and westward bound far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall and the sun always shines
She'll be flying o'er my home in about three hours time
This old airport's got me down it's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground as cold and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain

lovely, Robert. my big regret is not to have heard Gordon live
Thank you! I'm glad you like this! I had the good fortune to see Gordon on his last tour of the UK & Ireland in 2016, at Manchester. My youngest son came with me, and although Gordon's voice was not quite what it had once been, we still enjoyed a great show, as the brilliance of the songs shone through. A memory I will always cherish.
Wonderful song and a spectacularly beautiful rendition
Thank you for your kind words -- much appreciated!

My cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain." A song covered by many people, and my favourite cover version is the one by Peter Paul & Mary. My version here is based on PP&M's arrangement.

Just great.Robert, and I've got to say I love your strumming picking style. You and I do not use a pick. My style is a lot like yours but I wish I could just master your finesse a little better. You are teaching me! Great job on the song. I think I'm going to try early morning rain as well. Ha!
It's a great song to play and sing, Mike - you should do it! It's well suited to either strumming or picking. The chords I use are C, Em, Dm, G7, with F thrown in near the end. Obviously the capo on the 3rd takes the key up to E-flat (instead of C) but the capo (if used) goes where the voice needs it to go. I'm glad you like my version! Thanks for the comment!
A beautiful song well played and sung. I would like to see what your right hand is doing. Thanks for shareing.
Thank you for the kind comment. My right hand? These days I basically use just thumb and forefinger, due to an arthritic middle finger. I used to pick with thumb and first two fingers, but I've had to adapt my style. I'm grateful that I can still play.
@@roberthaigh3206 Thanks for the reply. 1 finger 1 thumb sounds great. Good health.

Thank you!
I like it. It's a bit slower but i think thats a good thing. Keep it up
Yeah, it is slower than most other versions, I guess. I used to play it a bit faster but I thought it sounded a bit too jaunty, so I slowed it down a bit. Thanks for the visit, and the comment!
