    This scene stuck with me after seeing TPM in 1999 because it is a great metaphor for the different approaches to life. We can seethe and rage at life’s unexpected interruptions and frustrations like Maul does, pacing back and forth and futilely probing at the blast shields, or we can accept that which is beyond our control and keep centered, like Qui Gon. Both die shortly after the scene which adds to the metaphor that we will all die but we can choose to live in discontent and bitterness like Maul or harmony and purpose like Qui Gon.

      Exactly. We can accept that control is an illusion, that pain and loss is a part of life, and live like "cease the day, live in the moment". I myself have let go of discontent, I see that luxurious things don't add to my happiness, and choose to enjoy the small things in life.

    Qui Gon is everything a true Jedi should be 🙏 his mind is set on nothing but the will of the Force, for good or bad. He doesnt care for politics or being a warrior/soldier. His very existence is based on being aligned fully to the Force. If the Jedi order were like him, Palpatine would likely have never risen to (unlimited) power...

    • @AlindBack
      @AlindBack Před 3 měsíci +9

      @@johncraftenworth7847 Well, I suppose that's really the thing, then. Obi Wan really was the quintessential Jedi, as the Jedi are people that follow a code. They aren't an extension of the Force, not really. Bastions of the light, certainly, but not pawns of the Force. Qui Gon, on the other hand, was that true extension of the Force. He gave himself fully over to the Force, and the Force granted him the ability to live on consciously in it after his body died.
      I'm sure over the centuries there were many Jedi scholars that argued that what Qui Gon achieved, and how he embodied the will of the Force, was really how the Jedi should have been, but ultimately, what Obi Wan exemplified was what the Jedi chose to be.

    Palpatine himself feared Qui-Gon Jinn. He knew that Qui-Gon was ahead of the Jedi Council. Qui-Gon was more developed and tune within the force. He knew what had to be done. Unlike the jedi council, who were weak and, quite frankly, easily played. If Qui-Gon was part of the council, maybe Palpatine wouldn't succeed. As for Maul, if he fought a Qui-Gon in his prime, he would have lost. Qui-Gon was arguably the greatest jedi ever (second is Luke).

    On a side note, I find it fascinating that while Sidious was the culmination of the Rule of 2 Sith, by the time he came about, much of the point of the Rule of 2 had been dropped in favor of the thinking of the Ancient Sith it was meant to replace. By the time of Plagus' master they were once again more focused on personal power and immortality, and after Sidious started the Empire, he too began to seek this and focus on military might. Both things the Rule of 2 tried to remove.

    Everyone mistakes qui gon for being weak as well, being that he only fought maul on screen and lost. In actuality, he was one of the most powerful jedi alive at the time. He was obviously wise and experienced, but he was actually considered to be the second best form IV lightsaber duelist behind only Yoda. I believe in TPM novel maul states that he knows if he makes one wrong move against qui gon, he will die. Maul only wins due to him guiding the duel to a small space which doesn’t work well for qui gons lightsaber form, as well as qui gon getting tired due to age. I never got the sense that Maul was angry or fearful or QuiGon meditating but rather that it was showing the difference in philosophy between a Jedi and a Sith. QuiGon takes a moment to center himself, waiting patiently and listening to the force for the moment that the ray shields will open. Meanwhile Maul is impatient, testing the force and just wants to keep fighting, keep the hate and anger flowing.

    I love this idea. Watched a very neat short film called "The Premonition" where a jedi hides her child, knowing a sith is hunting them, and meditates before the battle, learning through the force that she will die. She fights him anyway, at peace with what will be.
    To all the Andys out there that want to argue lore points, I'm not interested. It happens every time I voice a random thought just for fun on one of these videos. Always comes down to "WELL NO THIS WOULDN'T HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU SEE MAUL IS....." - I don't want to hear it.
    Just a fun thought, what if Qui Gon knew he would die after meditating, but he also knew it was the only way Obi Wan could defeat Maul?

    6:39 so based off this thinking, obi's emotion was the source of his power, (at least for the rest of the fight and temp recovery). therefore Maul was able to recover and overcome. Which, in obi's doubt and inexperience, he was the reason why Maul was able to defeat Gin. So if he had just had more trust and confidence in his master, (like he was trying to teach him) Gin might still be alive?

    Darth Maul was also riding the high of his first Jedi kill. Padawan Darsha Assant was his first true kill...her Master sacrificed himself to ensure that Darsha, Lorn Pavan, and I-5YQ were able to get to the Temple to alert the Council of the impending Naboo blockade. He felt robbed of the kill of the Master but he was able to take Darsha and this boosted his ego of being the first Jedi he killed. Then he killed Qui-Gon and the high he got from that was his undoing.

    I cannot help but feel sorrow and compassion for Darth Maul. He was gravely mistaken: Jedi didn't save him not because they were weak, not because they could not, but because they were not good or kind in any way, not compassionate, shrugging off the suffering of others as "well, the will of the Force"...
    He correctly recognized a lie as a lie, but he failed in discerning the cause of this lie: not weakness, but indifference, pragmatism, cynicism even: Jedi cared not for slaves being slaves and Jedi cared not for victims being victimized. Jedi had their own troubles to take care of - politics, the Prophecy, Force research... They are the Jedi, not paladins, not saints, neither buddhas or bodhisattvas

    Mmmm…I dunno if “terrified” is the word for Maul as he paced back and forth while QG sat there sweating. After all, DM consistently forced QG and Obi Wan into places where they couldn’t easily circle around him. Then he separated them in the hallway and finished the master Jedi. Using this strategy, the younger Jedi lost his temper and because of that nearly lost his life.
    Put another way, Maul chose where and when to strike, manipulated the entire fight to give himself advantages, and even at the very end…he looked just as surprised as the audience(bc it was some BS, esp given what happened when Anakin tried the same trick on Mr “I have the high ground”).

Yes he was brought back in the animated clonewars but think what could have been if maul was in episode II & III.
