Thanks, Shawn.
Hi Jonni! You are an inspiration! I too, made a tortoise a couple of months back. I ended up using a paper plate and plaster cloth to make my shell. It worked well... will send you photos! Thanks for all that you do to share your awesome talent!
This was VERY helpful to me. Knowing that it's okay to stop and rethink, and that others have to make patches makes me feel better about all of my oopses.
Love this Turtle. Thank you for sharing Jonni

No, that's my "Lodge Brother." I just made him up. I enjoy moving clay around until I see a face I'd like to live with. He's been good company. :) I made a video about it, but I think there's more info on my blog. www.ultimatepapermache.com/the-lodge-brother-cast-paper-mache-wall-sculpture

wow johnh...really cool
Thanks.
Thank you for this but because I am relatively new at this I wonder if the complete instructions to make the turtle would be available in any of your books or as a video.? I am so keen to do this
Hi Pat. I didn't write a complete tutorial for the turtle, because I was moving to a new house and surrounded by boxes when I put this little guy together. And I don't have any turtles in my books, either. But go ahead and give it a try - you'll have fun with it, I'm sure. :)
Es usted Ășnica. Muy genial
Thanks!
WOW,,,,that looks great Jonni. I am still working on my 30 inch baby elephant. I hope my next project will be a large turtle. I am thinking about turning a wok upside down to mold the shell.
The wok is a great idea. That will make a nice big turtle!
Which is your best paper mache clay recipe please. You have so many. Which one woulf you recommend .thx
Hi Karin. It depends on what you're making. My personal favorite is my original recipe, which I posted a long time ago, here: czcams.com/video/f84FvxLHCnk/video.html
I use that recipe the most because it's very strong, even if you use less flour than the recipe calls for and make it wetter and apply it very thin.
However, it isn't as smooth as the air dry clay recipe, which uses the same ingredients but in different proportions - and with the addition of corn starch. A lot of people seem to prefer it for all projects. You can find that recipe here: czcams.com/video/T9lOY1xNslw/video.html
I hope this helps. :)
Thanks for I love all you video
Your turtle is painted so realistic as well! Just have been looking at your website often figuring my confidence will increase enough to try some piece!
This video is a little confusing and wanted to see if you made a updated version to ensure the best fitting shell halves etc..
No, I didn't make another turtle, although I'm sure I intended to. I didn't know how to do it when I started, so I probably shouldn't have turned on the camera - but that's often the way I make a sculpture. I just get started, and change things as I go if the first thing I try doesn't work out. They still seem to come out OK, though. :)
muy muy bonitaâșâ€
Oi Boa noite essa tartaruga,,estar maravilhosa amei
Thanks!
I was impresed by the finished turtle, :)
Thanks.
Hi There!
Your youtube channel is so good!
I Live in Australia and I'm currently studying year 9.
I have to do this thing we do in year nine called Projects for Art and design.
I was wondering if you could put up a video of how you made the lion in the background? I have such a cool idea for its mane!
Thank you so much!! :)
Fantastic
Thanks.
Wow! I awe!
Do you seal your sculptures with protective coating after ? If so what do you use
I use Americana acrylic matte varnish. Any brand of artists' varnish will work.
Joan ...love your stuff and your delivery on camera.Please..what's your basic Mache mix liquid ?
+marcus miles I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean which paste do I use when I'm doing traditional paper strips and paste? If so, I just mix all-purpose flour with water, and stir. Real basic.
The perfect grandmother I never had
Aww - thanks. đ
thank you

This is really cute!! and I want to make it for my best friend for his birthday! How did you attach all of the parts together? Thank you!
Gosh - I forgot about this little turtle. All the things I did wrong, and yet he still turned out really cute. I think I put the air dry clay on the body and the two halves of the shell, let them dry, and then stuck them all together with a few dabs of hot glue in hidden spots. Any hot glue that could be seen would then be covered with more air dry clay. At least that's how I'd do it now - I didn't take photos of that part, and I can't honestly remember - oops!
Okay! Thank you so much I appreciate it tons! He is very adorable! Have a wonderful day!
It's beautiful, I love e
Cute
Sencillamente hermoso su trabajo. Saludos desde Cali Valle Colombia.
Very nicely done. One thing you said struck me though. You said one thing you'd do differently is you would put everything together first before adding the air-dry clay (rather than applying the air-dry clay to the individual pieces). That seems like it would be a lot harder to do than the way you did it. Unless you are just talking about the outer shell... Love the final look. Thanks for showing us your thought process as you created this piece. BTW, if you'd have made a 2nd turtle, I would have volunteered to take it off your hands (LOL!).
robofthewest You may be right - since I didn't try doing it a second time, I have no real way of knowing if my plan would make it easier or not. It was frustrating to go back and do so many changes to the shell just to get the body to fit, though. Maybe making the body first, and then making the shell...
He was a present for the little boy who just moved into the house I sold. His mom said he liked turtles, so I made him one.
Hi Jonni, thank you for making this video,it has helped me in a number of ways! I am planning on making a gift for a friend, and wanted to make it out of clay and paint it. I went to Wal-Mart and found this Polyform Air Dry Moldeling Clay. I came home and turned on CZcams University, lol, to seek some information about this product and maybe some tips about using it. Turns out, stumbling onto your video helped me out greatly, so I had to take a moment and Thank You! I will show you what I've made when I am finished next week, maybe next weekend ;)
I do have a question if you or anybody else can answer me, being that it is the First time I am ever using this material, much less sculpting Anything. Yikes!!! My question is..." How thick can something be made with this stuff, without it cracking or not correctly drying out?" An inch? A half inch? 3 inches? lol, I've no clue...thanks again for your time, and help.
I'm really artsy and crafty, even if not trained or very skilled. Oh well, gonna give it heck anyways :)~
+NIGHTROCKER70 I am not familiar with that product, but it should say on the label. I keep the air dry clay very thin, but it's a different product than the Polyform. That product might work better if it's thicker.
Thank you so much for your replies :) They , like your video, are very helpful. I live in Florida, and it is always sunny and hot here, so I figured as cheap as this clay is, and as curious as I am,lol, I made a 3 inch long 1 inch thick column, or pole type shape and placed it directly in the roasting sun. We shall see. If it doesn't crack, or have Any other issues, I will post the results.Well, naturally I will post if it falters in any way also. And again, thank you very much for sharing.
Lol thx I made this and it came perfectly and I painted it and sold it in my yard sale for 100$ and 46cents and i
Really sold it to a young lady she looked like a rich person so thanks you miss if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have that 100$
lindo
Does home made clay can work
I used my DIT air dry clay recipe. You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
I love tortoises
Me too. đ
Oh...just thought of a couple more questions about the clay. 1. Can it be placed in direct sunlight to aid drying? Can it be dried outside out of the sunlight? What is the thickest piece you've made, and how long did it take to dry? Again, Thank you to Anyone that replies ;) Have a great day.
+NIGHTROCKER70 I haven't tried putting it in the sunlight. It might crack if it dries too fast. But it might work. Go ahead and try it. I try to keep the air dry clay under 1/4 inch.
now is that a though hard as rock, metal or something?
The air dry clay does dry very hard. Not quite that hard, though. :)
@@UltimatePaperMache ah...so after you build it would become a though as a rock, metal or something?
@@UltimatePaperMache so it would become a tough hard as solid forever?
@@UltimatePaperMache and what would happen when it falls in down on the ground? is it still intact?
@@WhiteTiger-gt3tn It will last for a very long time if you keep it dry. But it isn't as hard as a rock. More like wood, perhaps.
cute
Thanks.
can u just use tape? instead of paper mache?
For which part of the project?
Ultimate Paper Mache
My air dry clay sculpture keeps on cracking when it dries. I use aluminum foil and then covered it with air dry clay. Now I know it won't stick. I'm trying make it again but this time I'm going to use aluminum foil and cover it with paper mache and air dry clay. Would that work? Do you think it would stop cracking?
Are you using my air dry clay recipe? If so, you're right - it won't stick to foil. The only times I've had problems with it cracking is if I use a thick layer, anything over 1/4", or if I forget to brush on a mixture of water and glue at the juncture between two pieces of the clay. It dries out so quickly on the edges that it doesn't stick to itself very well either, and when it dries and shrinks just a little the pieces pull apart and leave a crack. If you already have the ingredients, you might want to try the original paper mache clay recipe instead. It's a lot stickier and I have used it over foil, and it worked just fine. It's stronger, sticks to itself without any added glue on the joints, and it's just easier to work with. It isn't as smooth, but you can always add a thin layer of the air dry clay on top of it after the paper mache dries. You can find the original recipe here: czcams.com/video/f84FvxLHCnk/video.html
Ultimate Paper Mache Thank you sooooo much for replying! I'm in love with all your creations. Thank you again đ
I really want to do an elephant anyone know how I can do that?
+Aysiam I have a video showing how to make an elephant. czcams.com/video/2vlFkRngRQY/video.html
Hi Jonni (so) do you know a woman named Mardy Widman?
KnitOutTheJams No, I don't. Do you?
Yeah, I knew the world wasn't THAT small. She bought a paper mùché half mask from an Oregonian artist once, she's an old friend of mine. Just curious if there was a connection there.
I love it but you talk so much
