  • No more searching for the right joint compound for paper mache clay! This new recipe doesn’t use PVA glue, so you can use any brand of pre-mixed drywall joint compound.
    😊 I love this new paper mache clay. It feels nice, it takes very fine details when sculpting with it, and it dries very hard and strong. If you try it, please leave a comment and let us know if you like it as much as I do.
    Remember - this is a form of paper mache, not a 'real' clay. It should be used in thin layers over an armature so it can dry quickly. You can add new layers over dried layers, to build up more details.

    After playing with this for about a week, I am now recommending that we use it in fairly thin layers (1/4" or less) to make sure it can dry quickly. This is the same recommendation I have for all my other paper mache clay recipes. Because this material dries so hard, a very thin layer will be very strong.

      Good morning thank you for letting us know I wanted to ask you have you ever made mermaid scales🤔 with any of your recipes😊 and I also have left your previous messages what do you do with your joint compound to prevent mold from growing in the container?

      I don't actually know how to keep mold from growing in the joint compound container after it's open. It doesn't seem to happen with the DAP brand, so that might be another reason to use this no-glue recipe.

      I don't think you have to prime it, if you don't want to. A coat of gesso makes it a little easier to get nice bright colors, but it's really up to you. I do highly suggest using a varnish or clear spray after painting, to protect the finish and to keep your sculpture from absorbing moisture from the air.

It should continue to stay workable until you take the cover off, because there's no plaster in it to make it get hard before it dries. • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 17 dny +2

      Thanks for the compliment - but I don't know about your silicone mold question. I tried the original paper mache clay in a fairly large mold, and it didn't work, because it shrinks when it dries. It can only dry where it has access to air, so it curled up inside the mold and distorted the shape. People have told me that they use the silky-smooth air dry clay in small candy-sized molds, and it works well. This recipe should work for the tiny molds, but you'll need to experiment with larger ones to see if it will work the way you need it to. Please let us know what you find out! :)

    Great! So if it's something in between the original one and the silky one, what is the thickest layer I can apply? (as the silky one you can apply only in a very thin layers, right?)
    And if I add layers shall I use some glue or something, or just apply it after the other layer got dried? How long does it takes it to dry? Thanks a lot Joni! ✌🙏

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 18 dny +3

      You don't need the glue between layers. But I haven't had time to see if a really thick layer will dry evenly, and without trapping moisture inside. I have a lump of it sitting on my desk, slowly drying, and so far I don't see any cracking - but we'll have to use it for a few more projects before we really know it's limitations. If you do some experiments, please let us know what you learn.

      I bought a really cheap mixer at Walmart, about 10 years ago. I keep it in the kitchen, but I only use it for my craft projects. • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 18 dny +1

      I had a lump of it left after making the Stargazer Man, and I left it on the table to dry. It's about an inch thick, and about 2 1/2 inches square. I hasn't cracked, but it still isn't completely dry - it's really humid here right now, so it's drying very slowly. It hasn't shown any sign of mold, but it might not have had time for that yet. The surface is dry in some areas, but still damp in others. I'll keep watching it to see what happens. So - at this point, I think it's worth experimenting with thicker layers. If you do that, please let us know what you learn. 😊

      OK, after almost a week, the very thick piece I left on the table is still not entirely dry, and it is showing signs of mildew. So now we know that we need to use thinner layers. 1/4" is probably the thickest we should use, except for details.

    What's the difference between glue and non glue? I just think readymix joint compound is expensive.

      The difference is that the Elmer's Glue-All won't work with some brands of drywall joint compound, and this home-made glue does.

    Hi Ms. Joni! I'm an art student looking to make some large scale sculptures for school. Is this recipe something I could make in really large batches (ex. 5-8 pounds) at a time? If yes, do you have any tips for doing so, or for larger form sculptures?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 16 dny +1

      I don't see why you couldn't make large batches. If you do that, you might want to mix it with a paint mixer on an electric drill. It gets stiff pretty fast, so I don't know if a cordless drill would be strong enough - one that plugs in might be better. And be sure to start mixing by hand if you think the motor might be overheating.
      I left a lump of the left-over paper mache clay on my table. It's about an inch thick, and after four days it still isn't completely dry. You'll probably want to use a much thinner layer on your large sculptures so it can dry faster. It dries really hard, so a thin layer is all you'll need if the armature is strong enough.

    Hello Jonni 😀, I've just tried your new recipe but I used newspaper (reduced at a state of "paper pulp") instead of toiler paper.
    It worked fine until I put my hand in it to knead, and then it sticked far too much ! I added a lot of corn starch, at least 2 cups, and it improved a bit but I still don't get the same result as you : it seems I won't be able to manipulate the paste as one does with clay, unless it becomes less sticky in 1 hour or 2, who knows ?
    This being said I'm wondering what I did the wrong way...perhaps my "glue" wasn't thick enough...

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 14 dny +2

      If your diy glue looked like mine after you cooked it, that's probably not the problem. It sounds like your paper was too wet. The weight measurements I included in the video for the wet toilet paper might not work with newspaper. But I used less than a cup of corn starch, so I think there was just too much water in the mix. Try it one time with toilet paper, just to see what it should look and feel like, and then do your newspaper experiments and try to match your TP results.

    How do you decide when you use paper strips and when you use paper mache clay?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 10 dny +1

      The paper strips are great for masks, because they're so light. I use the paper mache clay for details on masks, or to make sculptures. It's much stronger than paper strips and paste, and can take a lot of handling. And you can sculpt features and fur more easily than with the strips and paste.

    Can you use facial tissue or paper towels vice tp?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 16 dny

      I haven't tried anything except toilet paper. I know that you can use newspaper in the original recipe, if you soak it long enough and mix really well to break up the fibers. Facial tissue and paper towels might also work - it depends on whether or not the fibers will fall apart when they're soaked. Give it a try, and let us know if it works.

      I'm not a paper expert, just a retired art teacher. I found that boiling down old paper turns it into a pulp that can be spread out on screens, and when excess water is squeezed out, it leaves sheets of paper. I guess all I am saying is that once paper is in pulp form and mixed in, it should work. Toilet paper just goes pulpy faster

      Yes, there's always shrinkage when water-based products dry. But it doesn't seem to shrink a whole lot. You won't want to use it over a really hard object, like a glass bottle, though, or it will crack as it dries.

    How toxic is the joint compound? 😬😬😬

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  Před 8 dny

      You don't want to sand it without a mask, because silica is in the mix. It's always present when the limestone is mined, but it isn't really 'toxic.' It's just a really fine powder that you don't want in your lungs. I almost never sand my paper mache clay because there are better ways to make it smooth, but if you really feel like you need to do that, wear a mask.
