Do atoms have anti-aliasing?
@@FoxtrotYankeeHotel That explains the deep seated emptiness in my heart.
Steven studying chemical engineering rn. That’s now how atoms work. And no, the phase (solid, liquid, gas) is not dependent on the number of atoms in a molecule. The phase is dependent on several factors, but ultimately boils down to how attracted the molecules in a substance are to each other.
Steven also, atoms are not 99.999% empty space. Science has come to understand that electrons do not simply orbit atoms. They’re much more complex and act as quantum particles. Thus, the Bohr model of the atom (the model that says there’s all that empty space) is not correct. Also, many atoms are much more dense than the Hydrogen atom, which is the one that most people cite as being mostly empty.

All I knew about AA that if it's turned on the frame rate drops lol. Thanks for enlightening me.
I think the easiest way to explain it is "imagine making a sphere with legos, that's where the jaggies come from, now imagine you put a lot of play doh around the corners to make the sphere smoother, that's antialiasing"
this is the TL;DR of this video but if you want more detail then watch it

very nice, are you looking to play at resolutions higher than 1080p? Im looking for a 1440p monitor
He calls Anti Aliasing a fake resolution. And here we are in 2021 with DLSS technology.
Not gonna lie, DLSS is a great payoff for getting good FPS but recieving some bad pixels
dlss still work as a fake resolution. although its better
This is genuinely the most useful video I've ever seen in my life.
Now with 4k resolution, AA is useless right?
Depends on the size of the screen and it's distance. The eye has a "resolution" of 300dpi at arms length. A 30" 4k display is about 150dpi.
Andre Hallqvist Resolution is not measured i dpi. Gaming mouse sensor frequencies are measured in dpi. Pixel density is measured in PPI with P. And even though I don't really belive that story, people claim that the resolution of a human eye is 576 megapixels. I still think it's all analogue in there. Apple claims that average human eye is not able to confidently detect any difference in sharpness at densities over 320ppi on 5 inches of viewing distance, as far as I can remember.
The other thing is that individuals with good visions claim they can easily see the difference in densities up to 900ppi. When you are 86, it won't matter to you, wether it's 100 or 450 ppi, you won't be able to see the difference without glasses.
Well, see it like this. If you use now have a 1080p screen and then you buy a 4K with the same screen size and you sit at the same distance from it then the effect should be that you have 4x AA on even though you don't.
Your graphics card will still have to work just as hard though since in 4x AA your screen samples around the pixels and the performance hit is comparable to having a 4K screen.
In other words if your GPU can handle 4x AA it should handle the same performance with 4x AA off and looking the same. The problem is that your GPU probably doesn't have enough vRAM to support 4k.
Voyd Void
What kind of 4x AA are you refering to?
The performance hit will only be comparable if you use the most demanding types of aa.
The image will never be comparable though.
No matter what algorithm you use, the image wont look as good as increasing the resolution.
To get the same effect you must sit further from the screen.
Andre Hallqvist I don't remember. It was a long time I studied computer graphics. I just remember that there was one 4x AA where the computation was comparable to rendering 4 times the resolution. The same applied to 2x, 8x and so on.
But can it remove Iggys from my game. Also, do I need a high end GPU to take advantage of Anti-Azaleing?
ye

there aren't any specific fonts attached to it, it's just older and granier :3
Oh man crazy to see how far the quality has come
so much for minecraft then
Minecraft's look has nothing to do with (a lack of) antialiasing. They're using very low-resolution 16x16 textures, which are scaled up a lot to a single block's face, with nearest-neigbour scaling. This results in the classic 8-bit look, and they're doing this on purpose. It's just as easy to install a 128x128 texture pack, and it would look a lot less pixelated.

At what resolution does AA become pointless?
NEVAR, no, actually it depends on what you're using your panel for and how close you are to it.
4k
It depends on the PPI
TheBlackStealth Definitely, I didn't even think about this. 1080p on a 24" and a 32" would make a huge difference.
***** yah. It also depends on how close you are.
I activated AA on Tetris. It doesn't work. I am waiting for RTX Tetris

how do you make those lines with your hands
i never use AA.. makes the game super blurry, played far cry 4, bf4 and others and its all ugly, i just go high graphics and thats it, 1080p screen *
it also lags A LOT when i use AA so i just dont wana use it :S i care more about 60 fps than a "nicer" view
What size monitor do you have? If you have a 22" monitor at 1080p you don't really need AA since that resolution is best on that screen size. Similar to 1440p and a 27.5" monitor. When you have a 27.5" monitor at only 1080p, you'll really want AA.
JuggernautOfWar i got a 24" 1080P
RandomGames yeah sometimes AA types like FXAA can just make it more blurry than anything else, and they don't hold up as well to closer inspection
msaa and ssaa work better but take up much more performance.
@@RocketMaster2 damn couldnt have said better
I believe it also depends on the game. Gta 5 for example with fxaa on dosent look blurry. Its good to pair it with msaa at x2.
whats x2 x4 x8 and x16 samples ?!
Matija Tkalec the higher the samples, the sharper the image and more vram usage
It's like getting more free samples at the food court. The more you have, the better it is..except you will run slower.
Thanks bro, for years I’ve been playing games and this was an option and had no friking clue
Got this topic on my final. Never thought I'll be watching Linus tutoring me.
CZcams Recommendation is just next level.
20 years of gaming and I think I can count on 1 hand the number of instances I've actually seen AA have a noticeable difference lol.
Most of these have been things akin to power lines (or similar) in a game, when viewed from certain angles.
AA can, depending on settings and setting, also give an unnescessary "blurry" effect.
Both AA and sharpening effects are basically DIY solutions to fixing something that came faulty out of the box, in many cases.
So, what is the use of AA on 2K/4K res? Would you even be able to tell a difference?
Which one affects the performance more, Anti-Aliasing or higher resolutions?
The universe actually when really zoomed in would still have jaggies but you would have to be on an atomic level to see this effect.
Say i'm crazy but i kind of like the picture to be a little jaggy, especially if you have a screen with a resolution beyond 1920x1080, i hate the blurry efect that happens with aa
B Ornlivedie I still like the image a little jaggy.
***** I know, AA was good back when we all had 800x600 monitors, but now if you have a monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 or maybe even bigger, there is no need for it.
B Ornlivedie I still don't like it, it's also a real performance drainer, i would rather have the game run at higher resolutions then activate aa.
B Ornlivedie I think it looks really good even at 1080p if the monitor is under 24-25 inches, but if you have a 1440p monitor or multi-monitor setup you can turn up the resolution.
It would seem that whatever game youre playing does not have a good AA option.
Aliasing happens due to lower Sampling rate.
Suppose instead of lower Sampling, if Sampling rate is very very high sampling rate then is there any effect on signal like aliasing.
If my monitor is high reolution will turning anti aliasing on still improve my games visual fidelity (the game in question being tomb raider).

you do know this video is seven years old right and that he rarely helps People now because he's channel is still about computer's but he doesn't do tech tips right?
can you get a half pixel working?
Which is more demanding, AA or higher resolution?
Higher resolution is way more demanding
I ran in to an issue with GTA V PC. When I used any AA, even on the lowest settings I got worse FPS than is I used no AA and upped the resolution from 1080p to 4k!
Do you have any idea why that would be?
+SXG - Smileys Xtreme Gaming first of all GTA V is very demanding and secondly 2160p takes 4 times the power to run than 1080p
...ok...but that didnt really answer my question... Why is it then that it runs better at 4k with no AA than it does at 1080p with x2 AA?
+SXG - Smileys Xtreme Gaming what settings did you select for the graphics?
why is this in everyone's recommended after almost 8 years
This is refreshing! I knew what AA was... but to find a channel that doesn't try to stretch simple shit into 10 minutes is amazing.
As always flawless, Linus!!
To me, AA is not very good since pixels on a 1980p monitor are barely visible, and it seems to make the game blurry
