Great start to the Falling guide, now if we can get a little more in depth, for example how you never want to attempt to catch yourself from a fall with only one hand or arm cause that usually leads to snap! crackle! pop! of your arm bone, or how when you're falling back it's of utmost importance to bring your chin towards you to avoid hitting the back of your head. All in all great job Big L! I know you're busy being the longboard celebrity that you are, but gotta make time for more frequent Longboard Talks. Peace Big L!

Thanks for this feedback ! totally agreed, but the only nuance here is that i'm talking about the techniques that you could "learn" to avoid being hurt while falling. What you describe is, in my point o view, more of a natural behaviour that most of human bodies get when the brain detect a fall. i mean when you fall, all your body muscles tense naturally, including your neck muscles. That's why actually didn't talk about it :) cheers !

If you relax your arm, you can break a fall with it. You don't even need both of your arms unless you're going pretty fast.

  • @MrFunkyplatypus

Not convinced this is the best advice, having just fallen on an outstretched arm backwards and breaking my scaphoid.
When falling you should be aiming to roll. This means you need to keep your arms bent (NEVER outstretched) and you use them only to guide how you fall, NOT to absorb impact. Your shoulders, side and your butt will take the fall, but because you’re rolling out of it there’s no direct impact anywhere.
Love your videos usually Lotfi! Just not so sure this is the best advice

Rolling is a good idea if you can pull it off. If not, you risk hitting your head Using your arms is also a fine idea but if you mess it up then you'll probably hurt them

As a former aikido apprentice for many years, I can say that the forward roll isn't accurate and can lead to serious insuries for the wrists. In Aikido, the overall motto is relatable with parcour, you use the energy from your momentum or the energy from your enemy, that's what this roll should be about. Putting your hands on the ground and rolling over blocks your momentum when done wrong, which leads to the energy getting stuck in your wrists or even worse, your arms will give in, potentially hitting your chin or head on the ground. ALWAYS try to land with your shoulder that's closest to the ground and with your head tilted to your body, while you curb yourself slighty into a ball. That's what we called freefalling.

This was really well made and put together ~ highly entertaining and motivating! Thank you!
I've just been cruising around so far but definitely want to get a helmet and all that other gear so i can level up already.
Other videos say to avoid using your hands when falling though, as one might snap one's wrist and wrist guards are no guarantee of safety, but they agree about spreading the impact by rolling. Also, fall enough times and you barely feel it, plus fear of falling actually dissipates the more you fall.

So, I was riding on my longboard. The street leading to my house is a HUGE hill on both sides. (We are at the bottom of both of those two pretty steep hills.) I was riding and I got speed wobbles. I jumped off when I noticed because I didn’t want to have my injuries be even worse. (I also jumped off bc there were cars around and I didn’t want to run into one of them that was parked on the street.) I jumped and ran, kicking my board backwards. I had too much momentum though and after like 3 seconds of running it was too much (I’m short.) I ended up loosing a bit of skin, but no broken bones. Anything that I could have done differently? I couldn’t roll uphill so I just ran and landed with my knee and hand (forearm too)

The only thing I could think of is that you could've either footbraked to slow you down, then jump off, or (if you had the space to safely do so,) carve it out to slow you down. At the end of the day though, you didn't break a bone, which is good. Good job! :)

Having once broken my wrist and once spraining it from falling I wouldn't recommend aiming to stop a fall with your hands. The real difference is to bend your elbows so the wrist don't take the whole fall, I think the tricky part is learning how to do that though as falling is pretty quick.

5:40 With all respect , IMHO falling backwards onto your elbows like this can easily dislocate your shoulders if your arms / shoulders are not strong enough. You can use your hand to stop the fall, just try not to fully extended you arm and shoulder because that will created locking position which put huge stress on your wrist (or even elbow and shoulder). Instead, slightly bend your elbow to create a "spring" to your falling. You might have some muscle pain though but it will be better that breaking your bonny part.

@@fuge511 I have learned to "take" advice (learn) from many disciplines, and consider this to be a POSITIVE vs. my interpretation of your replies. Sorry to read you feel differently.
My first two skateboards had Chicago wheels (clay), best of the day. In grade school, tumbling was taught and those that took advice well quickly learned they could step off first story house roof and land safely with fluid motion. Those clay skateboard wheels used to STOP for any and ALL pavement transitions creating great conditions to learn falling by repetition.
Still wondering how many somersaults for 40+ get off, as from walking type speeds the somersault appear more for grandstanding, and from speed I would use just the opposite ... a controlled slide.

Uh, I don't think you should land backwards on your hands, I accidentally did it yesterday because I stepped on ice, but that was completely without warning, did not know I was falling till I hit the ground.
Really hurts the wrists. Lucky I managed to pull my arms back a little so I didn't fully land on them.
Plus I got to do the bum slide to the end of the ice.
There is some backward roll thingy we learnt in tai chi but I don't think you can do that on a board.

hmm nice video but man, falling backwards i think the first important thing is protect your HEAD ;) and the way you explained you don't catch that much energy. best way to emergency-fall backwards ist to snap/throw your arms back flat on the floor with all your strength, if it has to be quick

Same here, I think skidding with pads would work best. I have a broken collarbone going down a hill too fast and losing balance. I fell forward and rolled like he said in the video.
