These women were not evil, they just had the balls to be themselves and stood up for themselves, i think the word should be courageous.
Ball was tough and different people saw different sides of her. She advised Barbara Eden to accent her costume and sat with her helper attaching sequins. Other times she was on TV and openly hostile to the host.

I have a book about Clara Bow. This poor woman was born in a tenement slum unwanted to a mentally I'll mother and a brute of a father who raped her when she was only Sixteen. Her mother died and Clara was devastated. She could cry real tears because of her childhood. Her best friend was killed in a fire when he was only five. When she was very little her beloved Grandfather died in front of her. I would recommend the book. It tells of her struggles with Mental Illness.
And these women were not evil, he’s stupid evil for labeling these women that way.

Hedy Lamarr not only invented frequency hopping, but did it in an effort to help the US win World War II against the Axis, including HER HOME COUNTRY OF AUSTRIA. She raised, like, a million dollars in war bonds, as well. She worked HARD for her adoptive country.
And then, that same adoptive country STOLE her work, and never paid her one cent for it, after NOT EVEN BOTHERING TO TRY IT to SAVE LIVES during the war, doing the thing she designed it for, in the first place!
I'm an American patriot, and I still get salty about that. We could have lost a lot fewer people in the war, had they LISTENED to her. And then, when they FINALLY did, her patent was expired, so she got nothing. Neither did her partner.
This after she was sexually used and abused as a teen, and then as a wife, and literally had to escape on a bicycle from her first husband, who was so jealous and suspicious and abusive, he wouldn't let her breathe. But she learned so much at the dinners he hosted with brilliant men, who were happy to talk with the "glamorous" young woman, who would listen to them, and soak it all in, all while appearing stupid.
Hedy Lamarr said, "Any woman can be glamorous. All she has to do is smile and look stupid." Because, at least at the time, stupid was all men wanted from their women. If you were smart, you were EEEEEEVIL.

In a time when a woman got a pat on the head (or a slap on the butt) for not knowing "her place" each of them refused to be quiet and "properly" behaved. They were outspoken pioneers who paved the way for those of us who came after. A round of applause for these "evil" women!

The word "evil" being used to apply to the large portion of these actresses is horrifying and sexist. This is compounded by the fact that the description of why they are "evil" is usually that they were tough and difficult to work with. That doesn't make one evil.

Bette said "I'd love to kiss you but I've just washed my hair" in the film "Cabin in the Cotton".She said it to actor Richard Barthelmess, not a boyfriend. How *dare* you call these women evil for wanting to have creative control of their lives and for trying to survive in a male-dominated society! And just because they had human problems doesn't make them evil. By you focusing on their having mental health and substance misuse issues, you have returned us to the way the 30's and 40's stigmatised these conditions instead of discussing how they were normal, every day problems just like any other human. These women lived their lives in a bell jar, while "regular" people looked down on them if they showed the slightest hint of not being the robot the studios made them out to be.
And Dorothy Dandridge's name is *NOT* pronounced like "danger" as in DANE-dridge It was pronounced like the man's name, Dan. DAN-dridge. If you are going to soil the name of someone, you should at least pronounce it correctly!

I gave up. Apparently "evil" means professionalism and wanting equality.
I noticed that when Luciel Ball was mentioned, all they could say was there was hearsay and rumors of her attitude. The lady was professional and knew her job. It wasn't mentioned that she directed her later programs which may have sparked the comments of her being strict and demanding. Well duh! Directors are strict and demanding. I remember Betty White talking about when her husband Allen Luden died. Lucy brought over a deck of cards daily and spent time with her to help her cope with her loss. They never do bring up the good when they are gone. Its always the gossip that they make up themselves since they can no longer defend themselves. Well I'm defending Lucy with what others say they were blessed with by her.

Yep. Lucy was an amazing actress, director, business woman, and a pioneer for women's equality. One of my favorites. If she developed a very low tolerance for BS in her later years, she had good reason given how she was treated by the males in her life, especially her husband.

The times were different, agreed. You mentioned mental health issues, alcoholism, etc. What you didnt mention was that the studios did this to them. They were sexually harassed, not allowed to act if the didnt tow the line.

For example: Lucille Ball (Don't call her "Lucy") was the very first female head of a major studio. She did her best for her stockholders at the price of her personal happiness. Katherine Hepburn would not have been employable if she didn't have the talent to back up her toughness--and she had one of the longest careers in Hollywood. Get lost, will you?

Evil is not the word to use here. Bette Davis the No. 1 most evil? She wanted to act. She didn't want to play pretty sweet secretarys and housewives. She didnt want to be like everybody else. She wanted a role so bad it almost cost her her marriage. Of Human Bondage 1934. She Practiced a british accent and should have at least been nominated for an oscar. Jack Warner was not happy about all the good press she got for making that movie at another studio. 10 nominations throughout her career. A few she should have won. And she was a perfectionist when it came to scripts and directors. A little difficult at some times but not an evil woman.

Every single description, if flipped to be describing a man, would be applauded as great, and assertive, and admirable. These women were certainly hard to deal with considering they knew their worth, not only as talent but as equal human beings. They were all ahead of their times.

These women were not evil, any more than their male counterparts were. They were way ahead of their time, and had a lot of courage to stick up for themselves, asking for the same treatment that was given to male actors.

Perhaps you should check the dictionary definition of evil. None of these women were evil, some were very difficult but so were many men. Truly difficult male actors like Orson Welles and Marlon Brando are still lionised and over praised but these talented and strong women are called evil. Clara Bow had a terrible upbringing and suffered severe mental illness but she was a dazzling talent. There may be some women that were over the top, but most of these women weren't evil. They are being vilified for being strong women who wanted to be taken seriously and expected equal treatment by an industry that to this day refuses to acknowledge them.

Vivien Leigh WASN'T a "Hollywood Actress" she was a very talented stage actress first and foremost. Her "manic depression" was not something which would have caused her to be inherently evil. Based upon almost all historical accounts she got a long very well with her co stars in GWTW with the exception of Clark Gable and director Flemming. She led a tragic life suffering from bouts of tuberculosis, heartbreak and untreated bipolar disorder. To put her in the same class as Tallulah Bankhead is an absolute insult to her person as Tallulah was indeed a morally bankrupt person. I am sure many others who knew her or have studied her life in depth would agree that she was not "evil".

As for Loretta Swift, a famous actor (I think we all know by now who) took sexual advantage of her, and she and her resulting daughter had to deal with this hardship.
