RB Leipzig And The 50+1 Rule

  • We discuss RB Leipzig's history, the reasons behind their unpopularity, and how they have navigated the Bundesliga's 50+1 rule.
    Edit: As pointed out by a commenter, SSV Markranstädt still exist. Red Bull purchased simply the playing rights for the first team, and created RB Leipzig, they did not - as mentioned in error - buy SSV Markranstädt.

    Nice vid. I wrote a paper on Leipzig for a class a few years back related to this issue. I personally struggle on whether or not to support them as the team is fun to watch and full of young exciting players. They play a fun brand of football and have economically helped the region. At the same time it’s easy to see why people are upset at the corporate influence, especially considering how insane some other leagues have become

Apart from Man City of course they can do and spend as much as they want even if they don’t get it back in revenue

    The problem with the RB Leipzig structure it bypasses the 50+1 rule. Why this is a huge problem and a lot of people are hating RB Leipzig for this. The 50+1 leaves the control in the hand of the fans. With this if the club wants to rise the ticket prices, change the colour of the team shirts, stopping fan events or if clubs will become 100% companies even possible the location. That's why the 50+1 rule is so important.

    • @timothysoo6353
      @timothysoo6353 Před 7 lety +17

      Many East Germans, particularly in Leipzig, are particular tired of the dominance of West German clubs. They are willing "break the tradition" of the 50+1 rule simply see an East German team come back. Thus, Red bull is seen as Trump doing a "Make Leipzig Great Again" whereas the 50+1 rule and west German club are seen as the establishment and Hillary Clinton.

    • @martinwinter615
      @martinwinter615 Před 7 lety +19

      50+1 has nothing to do with the investor. Example: an Investor could get to dynamo dresden and invest 500mio. So they would be in 1-2 years in the bundesliga. The problem is not about east vs west. But Red Bull has find a loophole of 50+1. If othere teams would do this. Companies or Billionairs can dictate ticket prices, trikot colours fan events and at the end locations. In Germany clubs are build under the community idea. The fans/members have the last word. Red Bull silent the fans by giving them no voting right and have a shadow cabinet of "members" that are nothing more then managers from red bull. That is the problem

    • @geminix365
      @geminix365 Před 7 lety +5

      Martin Winter Do you think it is different with the rest of the clubs? A group of small people already DO take all the important decisions. The only difference is that they have more fools to pay for them, giving them the hope that they count. At least leipzig is being honest. And if you really want to decide, then pay the 800€ and you would have a way bigger share, and have bigger impact in the final decision.

    • @martinwinter615
      @martinwinter615 Před 7 lety +22

      geminix365 yes there is the differnce - in the 50+1 rules most of the clubs are owned by the members. Which means each member only has one vote. It doesn't matter how much money they have. If the leading president want to raise ticket prices, stop fan events, change the clubs main colors or change the location the members would say - "NO cause we do a vote against you and you will be out of your position at the next council of the memberships" That's why 50+1 is so important

      Yeah, imagine if English league has this rule, then all 1st tier club like Southampton, Everton, Newcastle Utd, Leeds Utd would be runned by fans and members, which would limit their abilities. And then small football clubs from 6th tier, that nobody in Europe heard of, would do the same as RB Leipzig, they would have 20 or 30 members which are all employees of the investors. And then all 6th tier small clubs would be in better position than Southampton, Everton, Newcastle Utd, Leeds Utd, small clubs would be promoted and kick big clubs out of Premier league eventually. And there would be a lot of RB Leipzig-type teams in Premier league.

    Why would people treat the players like that? They did not make any of the business decisions. They just took their chance to play professional football. I think German fans have protested in the wrong ways to demonstrate their hatred. The owners do not play on the field, the players do so throw you're bulls head at the corporate office building not the pitch.

    • @pizzashark7067
      @pizzashark7067 Před 6 lety +25

      The corporate office is concerned with revenue, not with bull's heads. Such a protest would be meaningless. Only by taking actions that actively reduce the profitability of the club will any desired change occur; such is the way of business. The players will suffer to a proportional extent, but frankly, that's the risk they take for playing for such a controversial club. If the club becomes financially crippled to the point player wages become an issue, then the players, too, will protest and leave, and the club will be no more. Only then will the German public "win".

    • @vetenksS4
      @vetenksS4 Před 5 lety +4

      If you let the business overcome and lead the club then the club is a shallow shell nothing more.A club defines itselves through his members/fans not through investments.
      Players who join such clubs know the risks!
      Hannover had the issue with a fan protest when they stopped going to the 1rst team matches because an investor tried some cheeky moves.
      RB has not even any notable achievement in the past before RedBull jumped in.Btw we hate clubs who bought themselves into the success (Hello PSG,Man City ect.).
      What is your club Identity if you have changing owners with different strategies for club or treat the club as simple chess piece in their portfolio^^
      We had the protest about the 'monday league games'. When they stopped for 30min(even full halftime) every cheering in the stadium for all BulI matches.They will change it back in 2020/21.
      Overall clubs do not mess with the fans or the fans will mess up their 'business product'.
      If the Germany Football Association consider to remove 50+1 rule there will be burning clubs no joke.

      Dynasty I used to think “who is this team and why haven’t I heard of them?” Thinking they got big because of oil money
      Honestly I’m not sure if this is the reason why but I think they’re big now because of a result of excellent scouting and being able to recognise and then sign very talented players or just talented players in general who are at a young or very young age.

    I'm just wondering why RB are doing this? As an American, I've already long despised Red Bull's MLS side RB New York, as it for the longest time prevented New York from having a proper first tier football club, (of course, until Man City & the NY Yankees created yet another artificial club, (the only real club in NY, NY Cosmos are probably about to die)) They ruin a club with a great history in Austria Salzburg, & thereafter create the ugly monster that is RB Leipzig. Do they not realize that they are alienating the footballing world against them?!?! I understand that there is money to be made but surely the company must think of it's image as well? This is beyond frustrating. Damn the MLS & their franchising, damn them ruining the spirit of the game, damn Red Bull, damn their destruction of the essence of the game of football.

      Um... they're a football club like any other one; they all have their cons. Top clubs have more money than others, RB Leipzig isn't a top club yet. A brand may own a club, so what? They play football. Footballers make money off of it; at the end it's a job to play a professional sport. Money, whether you like it or not, needs to be in the background to make players play.

      Yet they are producing talent, investing in facilities, have one of the best soccer fields in the US for their team. Was one of the first teams to push for a reserve team to play in the 2nd division effectively saving it from folding. In addition, to having one of the lowest total wages in the league their youth development and system is one of the best in the MLS. In fact, a lot of the US national teams in the lower tiers are starting to have a lot of RBNY players. If anything they're the antithesis of American soccer which has been known to buy aging talent from Europe looking for a retirement check. They won the SS with the most points in US history with half of their squad all coming from their academy. Now they using their other clubs to create a network of staff and teams that their players can benefit from. I don't know about you but they're developing soccer much better than sometimes here in the MLS have ever done since the league's inception.

      Its called the Lex Leverkusen. Wikipedia: In cases where a person or company has substantially funded a club for a continuous period of 20 years, it is possible for that person or company to own a controlling stake in the club. This exception most notably applies to Bayer 04 Leverkusen (owned by pharmaceuticals company Bayer), and Vfl Wolfsburg (owned by automobile manufacturer Volkswagen), and has more recently allowed SAP co-founder Dietmar Hopp to gain control of his former youth club of 1899 Hoffenheim.

    Time to leave those 50+1 days behind. When you have teams like Bayern, steeped in history and success who sell a ton amount of merchandise and have incredible sponsor revenues, plus CL money every year and favourable TV rights deals- no one will at present, or in future, be able to compete with them on the pitch without external investors. And then its further complicated by Leverkusen and Wolfsburg not even needing to abide by the rule. Also, its even too difficult for Dortmund (barring Klopp's days), who have the biggest stadium in Germany and 150k members, to do so. Believe me, I don't like RB Leipzig going against the spirit of those rules set in place by the DFB, but the 50+1 rule goes against basic economic competition laws. Allowing foreign capital flowing into the clubs will level up the playing field. There are other ways to preserve the identity of German clubs, by preserving the membership policy in different ways for fans, by giving them extras like the clubs TV channel, ora monthly magazine on the latest football developments within their club- but the ownership structure and voting rights has to change. I am sorry!

      Yeah, imagine if Spanish league have this rule, then all 1st tier club like Betis, Sevilla, Valencia, Real Sociedad would be runned by fans and members, which would limit their abilities. And then small football clubs from 4th tier, that nobody in Europe heard of, would do the same as RB Leipzig, they would have 20 or 30 members which are all employees of the investors. And then all 4th tier small clubs would be in better position than Betis, Sevilla, Valencia, Real Sociedad, small clubs would be promoted and kick big clubs out of Spanish league.
