- WHO IS THE BEST INDIE GAMING STUDIO?
You could obviously make a subjective list about the best indie studios around, but that would ruffle a lot of feathers and you would never be able to create a list that everyone could agree on. What if we made that list objective? What if we ranked these studios based on their history of producing high quality games and their consistency?
Back in 2021, we created this list for the first time using the same metrics and since then, there have been an overwhelming amount of amazing indie experiences, which makes this list a lot different from the first time around. It’s not a hyperbole to say that every year feels like the golden age of indie games.
We examined over “50” of the best and brightest indie game studios, made sure they were eligible based on the rules we laid out and then rated them against one another to find out who are the top five indie game studios. Before getting into the list, let’s go over the rules.

Who do you think is the best and most consistent indie game studio
i was watching this and thought the creator had at least 500k subs, thats how good this video is
Thank you. I am very happy with how this video turned out. Share it with someone you know that also loves indie games!
Great idea and great list! I personally would have put Supergiant first but Moon Studios is indeed very strong too.
Thanks! I wanted to find out objectively and found it interesting how the Top 5 came out. Both Supergiant and Moon appear to have two great games coming this year too! My change would have been to swap Heart Machine in for Cellar Door games even though I loved Rogue Legacy 2
@@VDGMS Yeah I was a bit surprised to see Cellar Door in the top considering Full Metal Furies was a commercial failure (more or less deserved, the game was clearly not bad, but it was definitely missing something to really emerge). That being said, I really admire the risk they took, and I'm glad that they were able to recover well with Rogue Legacy 2. In fact I wish Supergiant would have done the same, taking advantage of their success to focus on a risky project, and keep Hades 2 as a safe backup plan if things were to go wrong. But if they do their first sequel, they probably have good reasons, the result will be amazing for sure. If I was making my own rules I would probably add a malus for studios doing sequels, to reward creativity and risk-taking (though that would probably make score calculations too much complex).
That’s a great idea! Studios should be rewarded more for taking risks. I’ll try to factor that in next year somehow. I think the top 5 will be a lot more competitive next year with all the new games coming from studios that only had one game in the past ten years.
Hey! Love the video and Heart Machines work especially since I'm a starting game dev that was inspired by hyper light drifter. Just wanted to give a little constructive criticism because I thought that the video was pretty long for what I clicked for. It was a very researched video and I haven't a clue on how you would change it to be a little more brief but I still enjoyed it nonetheless, keep up the good work!
Thanks. I’ll look for ways to trim it down next year when I update. Funny thing, most of my videos are relatively short (5 minutes of less). Good luck with everything on your end! How do you feel about how the data lays out the top 5?
Great video but I don't see Landfall Games mentioned, although the studio seems to have met all the criteria.
Thanks, I didn’t add them but too many of their recent releases don’t meet the minimum critical reviews to score accurately. How do you feel about the top 5?
@@VDGMS I like it, I didn't know top 5 and 3, but they seem legimite to be here as mach as the 3 others
Great work! You might be able to combine rules 2&3 in future videos to save a little time when going through all the rules. If a studio is a one hit wonder they certainly haven’t had two games in the last decade.
Thanks. Agree with how the top 5 shook out?
Anything by The Chinese Room is good with me! If that counts!
There is no wrong answer
Does anyone know what game is shown at 2:54 at Rule 5?
That would be Crowsworn. Here's a little video about it.
