Imagine a run being so outrageously long that someone finds an entirely new skip well after it starts and the runner can just incorporate it on the spot.

I played this game a while back and it was by far the hardest platformer i played
I would like to formally apologise to your computer for making it sit running for so long, may its fans have a good rest
As someone who dipped their toe into Celeste speedrunning, I’d be curious if this would have any applications in the minimum dashes category? Or if those rooms requiring dashes are mostly with dream blocks and not spinners
euni my goat
@@monkeyman55667 This definitely saves dozens of dashes for TAS but the minimum dashes category isn't really run by humans because many of the dash saves require multiple frame perfect inputs and subpixel precision

I never thought a video about doing nothing would grab me, but Msushi pulled it off!
I see what you did there
ha, grab
It is truly an example suited for the museums so we may teach future generations about this
They carried the video pacing well
there is another video about a low% speedrun and afking for hours
When I saw the title I was immediately like: “this either low% or 100%”
and it was both!
Reminds me of the Twilight Princess low% run where you stare at a rupee for 17 hours to glitch through a wall to avoid grabbing a key
nice pfp
Speedrunners have made Link go through hells not even Ganon thought of.
hewwo fellow trans person :3
i love it when devs make a mistake where animations dont loop and let you phase through walls
The difference is, of course, scale. Instead of running the game overnight and while you're at work, you need to leave it running for almost five full days. Four times.
finally, a Celeste run that mirrors my own approach to mental health struggles
Exactly!
This reminds me of Hollow Knights Low% True Ending run where you kill bees in the same room for 45 hours
Essence grind my beloved
Me too.
Is there a video explaining this?
Do you have to actively kill them? Because staying at your controller that long sounds way harder than going afk for 3 weeks
@@nadeen3157 You can macro it but its less efficient than actually standing there killing them. The speedrunner Skurry has the wr I think and yea, they stood there for the full 46 hours just killing bees
As soon as you hear a timer based value that relies on a floating point you know the glitch is gonna involve several hundreds of hours waiting
The limits of Low% categories are always hella interesting to watch, great video as always man 💙

I love how the rules eliminate the "half a-press" debacle outright by instead counting how many times you have to grab a wall.

Doctor: You only have 16 grabs left to live
Me:
So this is the reason why the latest TAS has achieved things never seen before
Since that day, I wondered how they were managing to go through certain spikes that you would never think were possible
This just in: Trans Woman refuses to grab things while climbing a mountain, stands completely still for 472 hours to change the physics of reality so she can grab things less. “just because i’m on the emotional journey of self discovery doesn’t mean I have to get my hands dirty” more at 11
plot twist: the glitch was intentional and it was just the developer's way of saying "you've been here for 118 hours. i'll help you get through this as best i can, but *please* take a break"
there's no way this could be intentional; unless they're being really smart with floating point imprecision
Most likely an engine limitation or careless programming. There is no logical reason to store an integer number of frames in a float variable unless integer data types simply don't exist (like in JavaScript).
6:23
"The community discovered that spikes don't actually do anything."
Imagine a speedrun moderator finds out that someone cheated this type of run he gon just leave it cause he ain't watching all that
Celeste is rare for me in that I followed the game from the start, not realizing at its release how popular it'd be for speedrunning. So as such, despite not being a speedrunner, I had the unique opportunity to follow how strats developed and encourage as a fan and even friend to some streamers in their efforts to complete their runs and find new strategies.
Despite all that, I had _no_ idea this insane minimum grabs run was a thing. Thanks for informing it!
I feel bad for the speedrun moderators
Imagine if normal spikes would unload their hitbox too, but only after an integer overflow on time or so, requiring several months of waiting. Suddenly, traffic blocks with spikes that were required grabs become standable
I think my new favorite categories of speedrun are all the ones where the optimal strategy takes literal days.
The term "longplay" has been given new meaning.
And I thought the 17 hour wait in Twilight Princess was long holy carp
The Mario 64 DS minimum b button TAS would theoretically take 20000 years!
@@KieranDavy Dude, ok pls elaborate
@@axehead45 look up Adeal’s TASes improvements using RIG and for a description of the technique, click on the video in the description. Yoshi can swallow an objects and every time this happens, the ID increases by 1 until it overflows after over 4 billion objects are eaten. Then, when the ID of the object is the same as this star, it can be eaten and the star is collected. This can take hundreds or sometimes thousands of years each time it is used and it is used each time the b button would otherwise have to be used to jump. However, it was made into its own category because of its power and the ridiculous amount of time required. Edited because the explanation was wrong + more detail
Hollow knight has you killing bees for 20-45 hours (manual or macro) to grind dream essence just to reduce completion percentage from 26% to 23% out of 112%, which isn't as crazy as celeste, but still, come on, those poor bees-
floating point variables are the pot of greed of speedrunning videos at this point

A lesson in "don't make everything a bloody float"
Is it though? No normal player is ever going to leave the game running for 118 straight hours in order for the glitch to happen.
@@ViperhawkX I never experienced a single bug playing Celeste and now I'm getting a lot of entertainment out of this video. So I don't mind the floats
@@ViperhawkX It's a lesson for the programmer, in case they made a vital variable in an otherwise secure program a float, in which something like this could be exploited by hackers.
Reminds me of Hollow Knight's Low% TE story a lot. Minimum something run. More stuff than just normal ending. Spending the majority of the run on one thing. Only one person did it once, then returned to it after a huge new discovery.
Skurry is a blessing upon the world of ridiculous hk speedrun categories
@@violettiaras realllllll
I feel like making/using a mod that increases the TimeActive variable should be fair game. It would definitely increase the amount of people willing to try the run.
Currently, I dont think it would be able to count under speedrun verification, however, given the fact that the run isnt exactly moderated, not a bad idea
@@vividescence That's what I mean, I feel that the moderation should allow that for this category. Maybe make the mod still affect the ingame timer. It won't be the first game. Crosscode speedruns for example permit a specific mod that allows you to set your fps to 60(I think) for specific skips.
Oh please. Speedrunning communities winge over skipping 30 minutes of unskippable cutscene at the start of a game, allowing a mod to skip 400 hours of pointless AFKing is out of the question.

Imagine if that float was a double and suddenly you have to wait for a year for this to happen.
absolute insanity and dedication, props to the people who have this much persistene
I have no idea why they would use a float instead of a discrete integer type to store the active time, but I'm glad they did if it gives us this run lol.
Because the variable is also used for a lot of visual stuff, and it has to account for different game speeds so they couldn't really make it a fixed integer amount.
@@SSM24_ Nanoseconds, kiddo. Just store the number of nanoseconds in a 64 bit integer. That should be good for half a millennium.
this is basically doing part of a speedrun every 5 days lol. im imagining someone buying a whole new pc for this speedrun in particular while they practice during the 5 days of break, its so impractical but funny
damn those traffic blocks! insane dedication on doing this run though, god bless Euniverse cat
low% always makes the funniest discoveries. Love the twist they bring to speed running. I wonder if these games should consider using a cheat or smth to skip time (and add it retroactively to the final time) so that the runs can be submitted more realistically (472 hours is daunting and gates the run off from ppl, i think the 17hr rupee isnt so bad as you can realistically do it in weekend but how many people are willing to wait 3 weeks?)

Neutral jumps are surprisingly difficult to do, for me at least. I can't do them subcontiously like with other mechanics, even setup and execution of demodashes comes naturally to me, but if I focus I can't do it either. So I have to consciously start and subconsciously continue. Especially in places like the 2500m key skip where you're ment to use the red bubble I struggle a lot.
