One thing that was always questionable to me was that the more tech you know the less of a problem the wind becomes. It's manageable once you notice dashing is still fast but it really opens up with extended hypers, wavedashes and so on in a way it just doesn't on first playthrough.
Also, the game never explains dashes are faster moving against the wind direction and slower with the wind which just feels really bad sometimes on the alternating wind puzzles.

To be COMPLETELY honest... I disagree. In fact, the thing that ruined 4b for me IS the music. It was fine at the beginning, but after the 3rd loop or so, it just got SO annoying, to the point where I had to mute the game music. I'm probably one of the very few people who actually prefers the A-side song. I don't even remember much about the gameplay, but the song alone definitely made it one of my least favorite levels. Which is funny considering the original golden ridge is unironically one of my favorites lmao

I hated the a-side with a passion on my first playthrough, and I still kind of do. It's a very important chapter for the story, and the gameplay ties in with it very well, but I just couldn't like the mechanics no matter how hard I tried, especially in the last part with the evil murder things and Theo. It think it may well be my second least favorite a-side, right behind Core. Somehow the b-side is in my top 3 though? Don't know what's up with that 😅

The only thing I really disagree with is trying to quantify the sections of farewell as A, B, and C sides. Personally I think part of the philosophy of farewell is that it’s one level that’s pushed way farther than it was ever meant to be. Anyway the rest of the analysis is spot on

    • @Technovoid
      @Technovoid  Před rokem +42

To be clear, I entirely agree that's what the level is meant to represent from a psychological and lore perspective - the level is about Madeline refusing to let the level end as a coping mechanism for grief. Mechanically though, I think the style of the three sections of the level do match the base game's "sides" pretty well - the beginning of the level is a lot about exploration and discovery, like an A side. After you get the heart, it turns into a long and grueling mechanical challenge, which is similar to the B-sides (it even ends in a rhythm block section like those do!). After she accepts Badeline back and the two work together to close things out, the rooms become very long but more open and free, and there's only a few of them left - like a C side! I think Farewell works on both a mechanical level of capturing the essence of the rest of the game's difficulty on three spectrums, while also expertly using those variable difficulties to tell a story that matches exactly what you're saying on an emotional level.

At the start you mentioned that you celebrated dying and I fully agree. As a game where you're going to die a lot, Celeste handles it really well. Several games when you die you might be sent back 5 or 10 or more minutes, but celeste is usually a minute max (as far as I've experienced yet) as rooms aren't that big and you get checkpoints. (and absolutely no issues like running out of lives). Of course there's the extra optional challenge of doing no deaths, but this game lets you play at your own pace and doesn't punish you for failure, even saying deaths aren't bad in a note going into level 3

Well, you've done it. You're making me want to play Celeste again.
Anyway, this was a GREAT video to watch and now I wanna quickly do mine
    1) The Summit: you have no idea how many times I've redone this because it's soo fun. Also really like the C side. Also, emotions and crazy good ost
    2) Farewell: good to play once, I'll do maybe the final room every now and then, but GEEZ it's too hard to enjoy casually. I like how every section has music with its own feeling
    3) Reflection: the atmosphere, the EMOTION, THE MUSIC! GOD I love this game's music (Calm ost = studying. Badeline chase ost = EXPRESS MY EMOTIONS). Love the feather, neutral about the other two. Was so happy to find and figure out the heart on my own
    4) Old Site: I really love the atmosphere, really love the music (even the more calm section). I always do the C side as a warm-up. Dream blocks are probably my favorite mechanic too
    5) Forsaken City: man this is a great tutorial for each "difficulty" and you're so right with this. Great introduction, simple yet fun. Dashless challenge is really fun (and surprisingly hard). Great music
    6) Mirror Temple: love the atmosphere, love Theo. Like the dash blocks and bubbles. Do NOT like the part with the crystal (I just feel so heavy). C side ost is a banger, my favorite to listen to (maybe not the most fit for the area though)
    7) Core: Mechanics are interesting, but this level really DID feel more like a puzzle than a platformer. Good? Bad? I can't tell, but music is chill, good lo-fi beats to study and relax to. Died after taking the heart in the C side (bullshit)
    8) Celestial Resort: kicked my ass in my first run in the game. A side is a bit tedious, B side has the same problem and C side... C side is fine except for that last bounce (took me forever to time it I had too much anxiety my first time I was in a HURRY). Good music
    9) Golden Ridge: really like the calm music, bubbles and clouds are nice, neutral about moving platforms. But man. I HATE the wind (when it's against you). I feel sooooooooooooo slow and it's just not fun there. But all the other rooms are very nice. (Crystal Heart is bullshit I JUST NOW noticed the statues)
Have I said I like this game's music?

  • @flightyena
    @flightyena Před 10 měsíci +5

Surprisingly, in my first play through of the game, I actually REALLY loved Golden Ridge because it felt like a much needed emotional break after the tense showdown you have with Mr. Oshiro. The wind was a welcome mechanic for me because it didn’t feel like I was being attacked as much as it felt like something else you’d have to deal with climbing a mountain; replaying it, though, it’s definitely one of the weaker chapters for me.
I recently decided to finish everything in the game besides goldens and I think if I had a list it’d look like this:
    1. Farewell - One of the most satisfying challenges in video game history for me, especially if you’ve finished everything the game has to offer until then. I think it’s completely intended to have finished all the C-Sides before you attempt the level; I tried a couple of screens of farewell before doing all the side content and found myself getting frustrated with that amount of precision but after finishing 7C, it almost feels like you’re ready for anything; which, in Farewell’s case, you DO need to be ready. I really liked how you described the three sections of the level as the A B and C sides, because that’s exactly what I was thinking while I was playing it. It never pulls its punches but it never feels like it’s talking down to the player, either; it’s just a long grueling series of platforming puzzles and due to the way that dying in Celeste is heavily encouraged rather than punishing, it feels like a full celebration of game mechanic mastery.
    2. Summit - Good for all the reasons that Chapter 9 is good, but just to a lesser extent. Like you said in the video, would be at the top if Farewell hadn’t released.
    3. Forsaken City - I think the first chapter is SUPER solid mechanically and if you haven’t attempted the Chapter 1 speedrun you’re missing out on a really fun and tight platforming challenge. It’s the perfect introduction to the game, but once you get much better, it becomes a great playground to really just have fun in since there’s nothing in it that’s really working against you.
    4. Core - The puzzle aspect to Celeste is actually one of my favorite parts of the game, surprisingly. I think one of Celeste’s strongest points is that the movement options are really simple and satisfying, so while platforming itself is great, adding a “think through the room” aspect personally improves the experience for me. Core asks the player to be precise and think through resource management, and I really liked that after getting two dashes. The strawberries are super great to figure out, too; it made me feel great at the game doing things with such limited resources.
    5. Reflection - The boss battle aspect of this level is the clear highlight, but honestly I kind of despise the feather mechanic. It’s great as a storytelling device and what it’s supposed to represent, but I played on switch and while I normally love the d-pad, it feels like I can’t get the feather to do what I want with 8 directions and the joycon stick has its own issues. Otherwise, though, fun level and the crystal heart had me ripping my hair out trying to figure it out.
    6. Mirror Temple - The levels are still good here, but I’m personally not super huge on Metroidvanias so this level feels kind of sluggish to me. The mechanics introduced are awesome and some of my favorites, but it doesn’t feel like you can really just rush through it unless you know the exact path and I get frustrated on repeat playthroughs when I have to explore to get through it.
    7. Old Site - Honestly, it’s just kind of boring to me? I don’t feel the same amount of satisfaction moving around as I get from Chapter 1 but it’s just about as easy and I think the first time through the game looking for strawberries, it’s totally fine but on repeat playthroughs, it feels kind of eh. The main reason it’s above the other two on the list is because dream blocks are fun and I really like the C side.
    8. Golden Ridge - This one is mostly just boring as well, and doesn’t offer much in terms of story or gameplay.
    9. Celestial Resort - Maybe it’s just me, but I HATE cycles in platform games. The whole level feels claustrophobic (on purpose, I know, but moving around feels more fun in open spaces) and you spend so much time just waiting around to move unless you know the exact path through a level on specific cycles. I also just have a personal vendetta against Mr. Oshiro for making the last two jumps of the C-Side personal hell for me; I still don’t feel like I have that timing down and what should’ve been a 25 minute grind for me turned into an hour because I couldn’t get the timing of the last jump down.

this was super detailed and awesome to watch! I feel like sharing some of my thoughts as well.
First off, I appreciate EVERY level for the way it's level design is used for storytelling, I've never seen a game that incorporates its levels into a metaphorical narrative medium like celeste, it was super cool to see.
I'm surprised you found the golden ridge tracks to be nothing too great, bc the remix is my FAVOURITE track in the game. YES i like it more than the mirror temple remix, although that one comes second.
as for my favorite levels, here's the rundown
A side: Forsaken city, just a nice simple challenge, lots of cool optional rooms, fun to speedrun, I love that there's the optional dashless challenge which is super cool
B side: Mirror temple (call me crazy) but i like the challenges as a whole, i completely skip the first part anyway, but the seekers in this felt like a much nicer challenge compared to the a side.
C-side: SUMMIT KING i finished this c-side first like an idiot, but i loved it, simple but tough challenge, easy to get into as well. I found other c-sides to be slightly frustrating and slightly putting the blame on the design rather than yourself. In summit though, every death is almost forced to be YOUR fault, which is absolutely great, it helps to keep you pushing.
Farewell was excruciatingly long, and took away from the story for me. It ended up becoming a frustrating obstacle for my completionist ass, rather than a good, challenging and story rich celeste level I'm used to.

3 mirror temple. the story is top notch throughout this whole ordeal. And really kickstarts what I like to think of as “the second act” The alt music just like the resort absolutely slaps. I love how it looks, how it plays, EVERYTHING. This is the best the base game gets JUST behind summit.
2 farewell. Ok, In my opinion this is the OBJECTIVE best chapter. But not my FAVORITE chapter. Which is what I’m going by here. Basically eferything you said about the story i adore. But it got so hard at some points to were I deadass busted out assist mode. GREAT SHIT!
1 summit. Best in the game. I love how it revisits old locals without felling stale, brings brand new challenge using old gimmicks in great ways. Has a great sense of “climaticy” ( don’t judge ) and the final win melody with the win screen and the whole credits are true tear jerkers. THIS, is why I get out of bed.

i have done farewell yesterday, and im doing the C sides now, i kinda regret doing it in this order, but i wont quit before making it haha.
That was an awesome game, farewell was hard af, took me 12 hours (i had never played a plateform game before and im using the xBox joystic, just dont, use a keyboard or the dpad, joystic sucks in celeste, diagonal are shit.)
Anyway, the only chapter that frustrate me to a point i nearly broke my controller was chapter 3. The sequences and timing sucked for me. I was loving the fact that i could just chill and focus on plateforming but in this chapter you can't. I loved chapter 1, 2, 7 and farewell so much tho. That was pure fun, and so rewarding ^^.
Thank for the video dude, that was fun to watch ^^

    wavedashing was an intended mechanic from the start;
In celestial resort (chapter 3) you can find an old-timey version of celeste to play on a PICO-8, this is actually the original version of celeste and celeste (2018) is based off of that initial game (also called celeste) in which you can do these tricks, such as wall boosts, spike jumps, and wavedashes though in that game they truly aren't intended and this is felt in how janky, inconsistent, and precise the tricks are. An example of an unintended feature in celeste (2018) would be e.g. ceiling pops, which depend on your subpixels (information not easily accessible to the player) and hypers (a variation on wave dashes (sorta) whose behaviour varies based on the frame you input your dash).
I also remember the developer watching a speedrun and mentioning how some weird bubble tech that lets you phase through moving platforms is intentional but I cba to find out the specifics (its somewhere in golden ridge (chapter 4)).
Also if you're looking for more celeste content the modding/mapping scene is amazing, you should check it out :)

The golden ridge crystal heart was THE ONLY one I got without any prior knowlage. I just tried EVERYHING. When I saw the crouching Madalyns, I downdashed into the white platform. I used a guide for the rest of them. I understand my brain is a fungal anomaly, but dang I feel so much less bad about cheating by using guides because if that puzzle was so hard for everyone else because it needed other game experience I don't feel bad for just being a silly silly.
(I technically also got the chapter 2 heart on my own but I had 2 hints; I knew it was early in the level and I knew the dash refresh could be exploited. But Golden Ridge is the only one I actually got fully on my own.)

    A few thoughts:
You commented a few times that it was strange that new tech like the wall bounce and hyperdash were introduced late and hardly used. I think this is missing the point that these new skills are like parting gifts to the player to send them off to do speedruns and golden berries if they want further challenges
You said that wave dashing was discovered by speedrunners and introduced by the devs in response. While this is true of demo dashing, wave dashing was always an intended and fine tuned mechanic. There is a secret room above granny in 6A that requires it, and that room was there on release.

This might sound like I'm lying, but what I did when I got to that room, I saw the statues next to the white block and tried pressing down a few times on top of it. Nothing happened, so I held down for a while whilst looking away, apparently bored. I then heard a weird noise and noticed Madeline had disappeared! I tried moving around a bit to see where she had gone until she popped out from behind the block. I was like "...wait, I'm in the BACKGROUND?!"

Something worth noting about chapter 6 that gives it even more points: The feather is the metaphor Theo taught Madeline when she feels anxious to calm down, and in almost every single screen it appears in chapters 6 and 7 it's in a moment Madeline would feel understandably anxious. For example:
-Right before talking to Badeline at the very start of Reflection as well as the final screens before the end of the bossfight
-One of the final flags in Summit (flag #3 iirc)
-Chapter 8 and 9 don't use the feather in that way that much, yet I could also count the one at the very end of Farewell's final room

The movement skills you “unlock” through those levels transcends you as a Celeste player. I played the hell out of it when it first came out, replayed it again recently then immediately downloaded on my ps5 for the trophies. I never did the core or the c sides. Then I learned they dropped a 9th chapter! You beat the game but it NEVER feels like you have to finish the other content. Personally, from the perspective of someone trying to get golden berries, I'd rank chapter 6 lower, due to it being home to two of the least consistent mechanics in the game. Golden feathers are quite difficult to precisely control, and bumpers are extremely sensitive to sub-pixel position changes even without them drifting from side to side. Having said that though, these mechanics do fit into the story quite well, and the Badeline bossfight is both an extremely strong part of the story and a well-balanced and fun part of the gameplay.

This list would be impossible to make for me, there is simply not a single level I don’t enjoy.
Chapter 1: 1A simply so cozy and cool, and I absolutely love the winged golden. As you said 1B and 1C take your stamina do the extreme and I really really enjoy that (forsaken city-esque custom maps are among my favourites).
Chapter 2: dream blocks are so fun, the entire atmosphere is amazing and the crystal heart is hid so well.
Chapter 3: probably my least favourite, BUT I love the execution on the “abandoned hotel” theme, the huge mess chapter is so clever and the music is so memorable. It has c*cles tho.
Chapter 4: HAS to be my favourite among the base game, it is the most “normal” one out of all the chapters as you are actually climbing a mountain, but I love the aesthetics, the gameplay and especially the music. Also I love the hidden gem on the 7A2k, it’s so fun using the terrain to your advantage even though there aren’t any spikes.
Chapter 5: I hate it, and that is why I love it. I don’t want to come back to it, so it is doing what it wants to do. The mirror temple is a place you hate to be in, having to confront yourself with the harsh reality of what you are living. So the seekers are just genius, they make you hate the chapter as much as possible. Dash blocks are insanely fun btw.
Chapter 6: simply majestic, beautiful, and really important to the story, the music is fantastic and what really empowers you to push through 6B (probably the hardest level of the base game).
Chapter 7: not a huge fan of it, the crystal heart is really really cool, but gameplay wise it isn’t anything special apart from the climax of your journey, which isn’t anything to scoff at (I said that I cannot make ranking of the chapters for a reason).
Chapter 8: on a second playthrough I really enjoyed chapter 8, it was more meticulous than any other chapter and I strongly feel that something would be missing if the mechanics introduced in the chapter (mainly no dash resets) weren’t present.
Chapter 9: the best chapter in the game, it is COMPLETE from story to gameplay. Talking about gameplay, it’s influence was big enough that custom maps are clearly heavily inspired by farewell more than any other chapter for anything gameplay.
Oh and also, I loved the Mario 3 reference, it really represent how this game was made by gamers for gamers :)

i admit that i haven't even beaten all the B-sides, but either way this sums up my thoughts about this game fairly well. absolutely agree that the ch4 heart is a neat reference but really bad. i knew the reference, and my spouse noticed the statues, and we still spent 30+ minutes trying to figure it out together before finally giving up and later learning that we were just not standing there long enough. because obviously the solution to something in Celeste would be to stand there and do nothing when nothing else in the game works that way.
but personally, i would say that ch3 is the weakest point. i cannot for the life of me understand when Oshiro is going to dash (unlike any other mechanic in the game, even seekers) and personally my brain just shuts down seeing that many moving parts. to me, it makes it lose the spirit of overcoming challenges and learning from mistakes, and is replaced with keep trying things until it works without actually knowing why it worked. which imo is as far as you can get from the spirit of Celeste.
though fortunately 3B cleans things up a bit and makes the mechanics more consistent, so even if it's harder it actually retains the spirit of not wanting to give up.

moonberry was fun because you can get very consistent pretty easily at the final room and the moonberry room is at the perfect difficulty where you keep getting a bit further with each attempt
golden berry was meant for the gods of celeste only. I would be shocked to see anyone who doesn't have at least a thousand hours in the game get it

Honestly, I hate the last screen of 7c. I really dislike long screens, but for me 7c last screen is not just long, it's, uhh, 'unoriginal'? I mean, there are just bumpers and dash crystals(and a couple of clouds), so it was kinda boring to play it. Also, i played it after beating other c sides and farewell, so it wasn't even really hard for me, moonberry screen was much harder.
    Anyway, great video!
