The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size[1][2] American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car[3][4] and some versions also as a muscle car.[5][6] It went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced for 1967.
Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.[7] Over 5 million Camaros have been sold.
Before any official announcement, reports began running during April 1965 within the automotive press that Chevrolet was preparing a competitor to the Ford Mustang, code-named Panther.[8] On June 21, 1966, around 200 automotive journalists received a telegram from General Motors stating, "...please save noon of June 28 for important SEPAW meeting. Hope you can be on hand to help scratch a cat. Details will follow...(signed) John L. Cutter - Chevrolet public relations - SEPAW secretary." The following day, the same journalists received another General Motors telegram stating, "Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World will hold first and last meeting on June 28...(signed) John L. Cutter - Chevrolet public relations SEPAW secretary." These telegrams puzzled the automotive journalists.[8]
On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroit's Statler-Hilton Hotel. It was the first time that 14 cities were connected in real time for a press conference via telephone lines.[8] Chevrolet general manager Pete Estes started the news conference stating that all attendees of the conference were charter members of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then announced a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. He claimed the name, suggests the comradeship of good friends as a personal car should be to its owner and that to us, the name means just what we think the car will do... go. The Camaro name was then unveiled.[8] Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, what is a Camaro? and were told it was a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.[9]
According to the book The Complete Book of Camaro: Every Model Since 1967, the name Camaro was conceived by Chevrolet merchandising manager Bob Lund and General Motors vice president Ed Rollett, while they were reading the book Heath's French and English Dictionary by James Boïelle and by de V. Payen-Payne printed in 1936. In the book The Complete Book of Camaro, it states that Mr. Lund and Mr. Rollett found the word camaro in the French-English dictionary was slang, to mean friend, pal, or comrade. The article further repeated Estes's statement of what the word camaro was meant to imply, that the car's name "suggests the comradeship of good friends, as a personal car should be to its owner"
Introduced in February 1970, the second-generation Camaro was produced through the 1981 model year, with cosmetic changes made in 1974 and 1978 model years. The car was heavily restyled and became somewhat larger and wider with the new styling. Still based on the F-body platform, the new Camaro was similar to its predecessor, with a unibody structure, front subframe, an A-arm front suspension, and leaf springs to control the solid rear axle. Road & Track picked the 1971 SS350 as one of the 10 best cars in the world in August 1971. RS (shown to the right), SS package was dropped in 1972 and reintroduced in 1996.
The 1980 and 1981 Z28 models included an air induction hood scoop with an intake door that opened under full throttle. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
You don't build models, you build works of art. Another great job man!
You are costing me a fortune young man and I thank you for it. I had lost my modelling mojo but you have restored it, thank you
Glad I could help, hahahaha!
Nice build up of a iconic Chevrolet Camaro.
Thanks!
watching your vidios got me back into building, have learned alot of tips and tricks the mod podge on glass has been a lifesaver
Thanks for all the tips and tricks. I learned a lot from the tips you put out. Thanks
When I see this body style, I always think about Jim Rockford's Firebird. 😁👍
Right!
Do the wheels roll on these model cars?
Check out Classic Plastic 101, Chris built Rockford's car, and it's awesome!! 🏁🏁👍👍
@@MikeCindyWhite Where is Plastic 101? I'm not seeing it on CZcams...
@@Dartman6 That would be Chris Cortel... He's the master of cheap acrylics his channel name is Classic Plastic 101, and his logo is round with bright green and black writing, right now I think he's working on some kind of female pirate figure hope that helps bud... 👍
I have built 3 of the older kits before and was always disappointed that the headlight surrounds were always distorted, I’m glad that they are better now
Much agree Lou !!
Thanks for watching!
I built this kit and it turned out pretty good. I say pretty good because the hood doesn't sit properly and the headlight surrounds are not moulded well. I considered building a second one in hopes of getting one that didn't have these issues. After seeing results from others and reading comments I don't think I will.
Another good kit by Round2. If only ALL of their kits were like this, negative comments about AMT/MPC/Polar LIghts would go away.
It's a pretty Camaro, I was surprised that they made the front bumper a separate part from the grill. For people that like to do resto-mods and want to delete the chrome, that's a plus.
Thanks for watching!
My grandpa (78) had a '701/2 Camaro RS with the Z28 pacage. 350 V8 just like this one. Sold a couple months ago after he retired from his job of 60 years. He had a stroke shortly after, hes in recovery now. Was blue+black. Might pick this up!
Build it up for him!
Thanks for building this Chris I really have to get this 1 now.
Thanks for watching!
Do the wheels roll on these model cars?
FANTADTIC!!!! You did that Camaro just right!🏆🥇🏆
Thanks for watching Mario!
GOTS... good old Testors silver. Useful in any kit!
You got that right!
If I think about it hard enough I can still smell it. Ahh the days of my youth. 😎
Love the color, I'm soo glad to see that everything went together so well. I have been hesitant to buy this kit because I wanted to see if it was really as good as they claimed and I must say I'm sold. I just ordered 2. Thank you for sharing your awesome build. Stay safe and healthy and remember to smile
Thanks Teddy!
I owned a full bumper, Placer Gold blk/Stripe '71 Z/28. Drove it as my daily driver for 10 years. Was stock except for headers and American racing 200s wheels. Never should of sold that beautiful car. A must buy and build for me!
Thanks for sharing!
That’s beautiful….nice job!!
All the Camaros look great in white too. I did this one in white with a black vinyl roof and it looks really nice. I've done black over white a few times and it's my favorite color combination. Next up for me is a square body GMC pickup.
Cool!, I can still remember seeing that car for the first time at Bill Grumpy Jenkins garage in Pennsylvania 1970.
Color is amazing. I really liked watching the detail painting. I’m getting back into building models after about 20 years with my son so I’m learning a lot.
You can do it!
These kits kept me out of trouble in the 70’s. Now they’re so damn expensive I grab whatever I can at goodwill for less than $5. Nice video.
Enjoy!
Looks incredible!
Awesome job!!
I owned a 70 SS 350 full bumper many years back.
I just picked up this kit as well.
Right on!
That is probably the best color for that year Z28. Very beautifully done.
Couldn't agree more!
Awesome Job Chris!
Have to admit... I borrowed your paint scheme for a 68 Camaro that I built then duplicated it for a 68 Shelby. Just loved the look of it so much.
Cool man!
I love the colors you picked for this build. When you were deciding what strips to use I chose the black ones. I could have bumped ahead and look, but that would have taken the fun out of watching for your decision. we were on the same page on that. I like to watch your channel and the progression as it moves on and think what I would do. Sometimes I sit and look at the kits and think how I would build it. I find your tips top notch and have to use some. Great job Thank you.
Thanks a lot man!
Very nice kit, great build and review. I think my wish list just grew again!
Good choice!
hey chris.. you are awesome! thanks for building this kit.. i have a camaro split bumper kit like this im building into a pro street with a custom made resin chassis.. its going to be a model of my 70 split bumper i had back in the day.. mine was hunter green with black interior with white stripes. this brought back many memories of fun times!
Enjoy your build up!
Love the 70 1/2 Split Bumper RS. Nice build brother.
Glad you like it!
I love this Camaro style. I think one of the prettiest style ever. It has a European flavor to it. Good to see you put this classic together. Great memories. Would love to see a Chevy S-3 restomodded with a 572 Cu inch V8. 70s sleeper with current power. Crazy. Great build on this Camaro!
Glad you like it!
What a great color and the interior is off the hook. Love the slight squat 👍
Glad you like it!
Great color, great build, now I’m inspired to build my split bumper 👍🏻
Go for it!
Great job Chris! I love the fact that they fixed the exhaust. It now fits tight up against the body like the real car.
Thanks! 👍
Wow, another stunner and I love that bronze. Your color choices are always spot on and glad you went with the black stripes, they just complete the look perfectly. Thanks for the vid, Chris.
Thanks!
Gorgeous build, love how it came out...had to comment for obvious reasons & yes i still have my real one!!!
Thanks for watching!
Do the wheels roll on these model cars?
Nice build like all the rest been builder and rare kit collector for 50 years i have a 50 year of unopened kits love to see all these great kits come back your paint jobs are great ive always used base coat clear coat got to try your way thanks keep up your great work cant wait for the next one
Right on!
@hpiguys Workshop love your paint techniques. I use gray primer and I use automotive lacquer from the part store and water sand primer. Use a tach cloth to dry and clean. Use a automotive lacquer basecoat to paint. Then use a high quality clearcoat enamel. Going to try your technique.
Can't wait to see the biplane build love the last
im home today from work in mass your vid just came on and as it came on i was just finishig up my1970 and half balin camaro fit isnt good with dash windshild but i trimed it out but your z28 looks awsome great rims and details and paint love the car builds 👍🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🏁🇺🇲🏁
Glad I could help!
Great job on it Chris I like that they put location points for the chin and rear spoiler thanks for doing this build and the body color looks great
Me too, makes final assembly so much better!
Great build!
Also, If I could buy individual stock in Testor’s Silver, I would.
Good call!
Looks great Chris! Thanks for the video buddy!! 🏁🏁👍
great job, I have done several of the split bumper kits and always had fit problems so maybe they worked it out with this updated kit. thanks as always for your excellent build .
Glad it helped!
Good call on the black stripes! Sweet Camaro. Thanks ✌️
Thanks for watching!
Nice clean build Chris! I love the color choices!🤩
Thanks a bunch!
Great vid and greating looking camaro. As a young modeler it always excites me to see whatever model you build up.
Right on!
I've been looking forward to this build for a long time (as the 70 Camaro is one of my favorite rides) Chris and as always you don't disappoint. I 'm currently putting the finishing touches on the split bumper version of this kit. I mimicked an episode of Muscle car and built as close as I could to the one they built from the Citrus green paint to the brown carpet a tan seats right down to a big block Chevy V8 I scrounged up in the parts box and passed it off as a 402 as those were all factory options for the Camaro in 1970 except the 402 was only available in the Super Sport and not the Z28
Rock on! Thanks for watching!
Nice build, great colour choice. I saw a similar Z28 at a show a couple of years ago and I have wanted a 1970 Camaro ever since!
Very cool!
Another fine job had a 81 z28 t tops love that body style and ya they sat lower in the back put air shocks on mine with 50s on the back thanks for another great job!
Very cool!
Nice. I built this same kit while home during quarantine in April 2020. My kit was cast molded in orange though, and had the split bumper. It was an AMT brand, and all the sprues and everything looked just the same, so I'm guessing they just decided to mold it in white now.
There are a few differences such as the new bumper, front end and the fit has been refined on this issue.
Got mine recently and it was In orange with the orange box art
Beautiful build looks awesome great job love the color 👌
Thanks a bunch!
Beautiful as always.
Thank you so much 😊
Nice build Chris!
Was it just me, or did anyone else notice the carburetor was a representation of a Holley 3-bbl?
The 3160? It did make me do a double take but from what I remember the 3 barrels secondary looked like a four barrel.
@@skeezix8156 I have the real thing sitting in the box it come in at the shop
Gorgeous. Going to get this one.
Good choice!
Gorgeous model! Perfect colour choice imho. I built the Baldwin version that came out a few years ago, can't wait to get my hands on this one!
Enjoy!
An excellent color for that model- well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice built!
Thanks!
Another great build review! Great color choices as usual. I may need to get ahold of this one. 😎👍🏾
You should!
Looks really good - like the black stripes.
Thanks for watching!
Great job got one last week thank you for showing this will help me a lot would do one on 64 belvedere by amt
No problem 👍
What a fantastic build up !!!
Great job my friend !!!
GOD Bless !!!!
😇👍🏼😇👍🏼😇👍🏼😇👍🏼
Do the wheels roll on these model cars?
remarkable, job as always. enjoy watching your builds. thanks . for sharing. till next time. have a great day. thanks. Mike.
Thanks, you too!
Also glad you decided to put the stripes on. I know "stripe delete" was an option, but it doesn't look like a Z without them! (to me....)
Thanks!
Great job dude! I love that body style! My best friend in high school had one like that. Very cool!
Very cool body style Tim!
Right on!
Awesome work as always.
Very kool . Mike Espo .
Thanks again!
Great job chris nice color choice as always keep them coming
More to come!
So after many years of building 1/48 warbirds. Your vids have persuaded me to purchase 67 Impala "Baby", and '87 Grand National from Model Roundup. I hope to follow your simple guidelines.
Great, if you can build airplanes you'll have a blast working on cars! Enjoy!
Stunning build Chris that colour makes want to find a firebird kit
Thanks Ian!
Awesome looking color with the stripes
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm looking for a 72 Nova model that I can build up like the one my dad had back in 1976. It was a RS. Im thinking I would have to try and find RS decals for it. Keep up the great work!
I believe that car was just called the Nova Rally, not a RS (Rally Sport).
Right on! No idea on that Nova but maybe a viewer will!
A friend of mine had a Rallye Nova, I'm thinking his was a 71, when we were in high school. It was still in pretty good shape even though our high school days were in the mid 80s. Between my 72 Malibu and his Nova, we had lots of fun cruisin' on Friday and Saturday nights in our small town.
I finished my 1969 Camaro convertable. Now for this model
Thanks for watching!
@@hpiguy I try not to miss any. Hi from Manitowoc.
Bought this model few parts missing buying another one
Excellent awesome superb outstanding magnificent great stupendous eye popping jaw dropping amazing beautiful job you did on that beautiful car I love it keep up the good work.
Thank you so much 😀
I had a 72 RS, Placer Gold and white. Yep, mine had a saggy rear end! Fun fact: if your Camaro was ordered by the dealer with the spoiler package, the rear spoiler was mounted at the factory, the front was shipped in the trunk to prevent damage. When the car arrived at the dealer, they would take the front spoiler and put it in the parts dept. so they could sell it to someone else!
Ha, nice trivia!
That’s pretty sick keep it up Chris!
Thanks for watching!
Rare car here in Australia every one goes for the 68 , looks good with the black stripes 👍
Thanks for watching!
It's known as an SS body, not just a 'full bumper'. The RS option brought the split bumpers.
Very nice build of a nice kit. Love your color choice.
Thanks a bunch!
I actually like the looks of the second generation Camaro body. I wouldn’t mind building this one in a Cortez Silver or Mulsanne Blue color. Two of my favorite colors.
Rock on!
Chris, another 5 star build! But if you really think about it if you owned a 1.1 car what color interior would you really want. Black is the only way to go on those cars.
Great build, sharp looking Camaro z28😊😊👍👍
Glad you like it!
Cool kit
Yes!
I had a best friend in HS that had one that was an ugly gold rust bucket. I hit a church driving it...
Love your body color choice!
Thanks for watching!
Very nice Camaro, the old bronze color is very good on it 👍
I think so too!
Awesome as always Chris
Thanks again!
Hey man great build!I'm making mine a "Dirt Track Late Model".
Really like this kit enough to buy another on! I think I'll go dark
blue with my street version? Maybe gray? Who knows at this point?
Thanks again for the really awesome video Chris, with ideas!
Thank you Jeff!
I think the reason for the sag in the back is probably the same reason why the person that told you that you had to cut some material did so. Idk. Looks sick though nice example. I’d buy one for $20k in this color scheme. Nice job!
Gorgeous!! I could never concentrate long enough to put it together though🤪🤘👍
Thank you! Cheers!
❤ Super cool!
Beautiful my friend
Thank you very much!
That's one I'll be building!!!!!! 😎👍
Thanks for watching!
That's Groovy Maaann! Nice work my friend....👍
Thanks a lot!
This is by far my favorite body style for a Camaro, but I'm more partial to the split bumper cars with round signal lights. I finally got to make a hobby shop stop today and bought a bunch of metalizer lacquers, so my projects are back up and running. Expect pics on the Facebook page soon!
Thanks for watching!
awesome build i have two kits
Thanks for watching!
About time. Beautiful build. Great job.
More to come!
Just bought mine
Enjoy!
I had a 70 split bumper RS. Never noticed the rear sag probably due to the air shocks on the rear :P Nice build.
Thanks! 👍
Back when, I got quite excited when neighbor drove up in a Camaro soon after this body style came out. Red with the split grille. My tthrill subsided quickly, though, when I found it turned out power (hardly) was a 250 I6 with base 3 speed cloumn shift manual. Looked okay, but no cigar!
All show, no go, but still cool!
Nice Camaro Model. I have the one with split bumper. Hope I can do a great car like yours. 😉
You can do it!
You just built the car I had in high school. Same color and everything.
Thanks for watching!
@@hpiguy I watch all of your videos. I love how you can take a can of spray paint and get as good result as some guys do with a $200 airbrush.
Being the owner of a 74, I always thought the leafs were flat over the years, but I eventually found out they did come from the factory lower in the rear than front.
Thanks man!
I also own a 74. You're correct, these cars were "tail draggers" when new. That's probably why air shocks became so popular back in the 70s.
Great video
Thanks for the visit!
