Learn how to build your first Paladin on D&D Beyond with this new player guide!
Whatever their origin and their mission, paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of evil. Whether sworn before a god’s altar and the witness of a priest, in a sacred glade before nature spirits and fey beings, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witness, a paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.

    New Paladins welcome!
Here's some general advice on playing your pally now that you have it built. 7 tips
1.) Your Oath. Though mechanically this actually doesn't matter a lot, it should be your touch stone for all of your character's choices... but only YOUR character's choices. Shepard Book from Firefly is a good touch stone you should use for that aspect. He had his beliefs and he held true to them, but he did not force others, only offered a better way. That is how you should see your oath.
2.) Your role. Paladin can fulfill both the damage dealer and the tank role, in addition to being an excellent face. You don't strictly have to choose one over the other; BUT be aware of what the rest of your party is doing. For example if there is a Bard or a social Rogue that wants to handle the face, or a fighter trying to tank. You can always feel free to be the back up in those situations.
3.) healing- though you are support, you cant really take the place of a cleric or Druid. Your healing should be clutch, or emergency use.
4.) Don't over smite. Smite is a strong ability, but if you burn through your spell slots you'll feel pretty lame. See point 5 to help. And don't forget you have good spells at your disposal as well.
5.) Specialize. A good feat can go a long way. Heavy Armor Master makes you really tough (bare in mind most monsters in normal D and D primarily deal non magical slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing. So this can add up to a LOT of damage you aren't taking.) Great Weapon Master can increase your throughput even when you aren't smiting. And sentinel is a great way to get extra attacks as well as protect your friends. Speaking of the protection fighting style is garbage, if you are going sword and board take dueling.
6.) Speak softly, and carry a BIG stick. Paladin's shouldn't be afraid of violence, but it shouldn't be your go to problem solving unless it is obviously needed. I.E. a dragon is attacking a village, or Undead are stalking the streets.
7.) Pick a God/dess. 5e went out of its way to be agnostic to the deities of the various world's and universes. In older edition Clerics and Paladins HAD to have a deity and in some modern fantasy games this is still the case. Design wise, this is good for a number of reasons; but I think for most characters... this doesn't work. Pick a deity, one that reflects your oath, make the worship or relationship you have with that deity be important to your character. It is a great way to make your character feel attached to the world.

I was intimidated to start a new campaign as I just kind of winged my way through my very first one. This guide was so clear, concise and immensely helpful! Thank you!
