  • Ali Arkady is an Iraqi photojournalist, filmmaker and artist. His photographs of war crimes in Iraq were published worldwide and put pressure on the Iraqi government to acknowledge the crimes committed by their soldiers. His work in Iraq also includes illuminating the plight of the Yazidis.
In 2017, Ali had to flee Iraq with his family when his life was threatened. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Ali Arkady was once again called to document the exodus of refugees seeking safety-this time at the Polish border.

"When I see what happening I get very very tired. My body, my brain my eyes"
This is great and rare example of EMPATHY. People have a tendancy to believe empathy is something philisophical or at the very least emotional; however there are also very real physical reactions as well as deep down under all of our various diferences; our races, religions and political factions, our bodies still subconciously understand we are all still the same: Humans.
This is why militaries must psychologically condition people to fight and kill by dehumanizing the opposition. Its also why people like psychopaths are able to do what they do up to and including serial murders, which for an otherwise healthy person would actually be very dificult to do. Thats why when sane and rational men are forced to fight in war they often cite the motivation of survival aka "it was either kill or be killed"
There was a study done in the United States following WW2 that concluded that many American soldiers did not actually fight to kill. They would fire thier weapons; manuever with thier units; but intentionally miss or claim to participate in other ways like reloading weapons or shooting simply to provide cover fire. Not actually look across the field; find an enemy soldier and then try and hit him. This is part of the reason conscription does not really work and why the United States moved away from using the draft to fill the ranks of our army after Vietnam. According to military science a profesional and volunteer force is superior. At least if you are attacking or require agression to win which in this meta of manuevere warfare you absolutley do. The only exception to this rule is when the the common man is forced to defend his own land from a foreign invader such as in Ukraine or Vietnam. Those situations will change the psychological aspect of the equation.

Iraq sits on top of more than 140 billion barrels of oil, making it the owner of the world’s fourth largest reserves. When the United States invaded in 2003, the Bush Administration promised that oil revenue-according to one report, totaling some $700 billion since the invasion, accounting for at least 80 percent of the Iraqi government budget-would be used to win the war and to rebuild and democratize the country. But fifteen years later, those dreams have been shattered. The economy has flat-lined, millions of people are internally displaced, and institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have had to provide billions of dollars to the country every year. Where did all the oil revenue go?

I was taking with a senior couple from Serbia who went through not only the ethnic fighting of Yugoslavia but also the historical Hungarian origin discrimination there. The area they have lived all the life was occupied and controlled by different foreign powers over the years. They told me the situation got even worse after the defederation of Yugoslavia. They can only have superficial conversation with the neighbours. They don't trust one another, so keep it to themselves. Already 20 years after the liberation from the Communistic dictatorial politics. I am currently in Montenegro, and sense the same sentiment. The locals choose to live a quiet life without associating with the neighbours. This lifestyle is their survival tactic. Those of us in the "Free Countries" where we assume being good neighbours is the ideal can never relate to these unprivileged people totally. Yet, we can create awareness that open mindedness and deeper level of understanding humanities is needed everywhere. For this seemingly insignificant endeavour, the uploader is making some impact effectively.

God Bless you sir! I am an Irish American in NYC tearing up at the suffering you’ve brought to light. And how heartbreaking it must’ve been for you as being someone who’s familiar with, heck!! who himself and family lived the lived the history, to Shia and Sunni fighting side by side and know how special and what a sight of hope that could mean for the future….only to witness them enjoying the torture of an innocent father and son because they want the wife. What ABSOLUTE SCUMBAGS!!! And to the Yazidi People, my Irish Heart 💚 goes out to you. I’d send out my Luck of the the Irish ☘️to you, but Irish Luck is NOT exactly a GOOD kind of luck. (Most don’t know that. It more of a catch 22 kick of luck)
Anyway, my Best Wish to the People of Iraq, especially to Yezidi.

3:51 that’s really dark, I respect this guys humanity, and love people like him who expose people who torture, I don’t know how any govt in the world could think that torturing it’s citizens could lead to the protection of the same citizens it’s really horrible to go through something like that, and it will change you for the rest of your life, people should t have to worry if they will be tortured again, we need more people like this guy, 😊

There is really a weird feeling attached in this video.
Th guy goes from Middle east to Europe and you can see the difference.
War is war, and its horrible wherever it takes place.
But the contrast you see between the yazidis and ukranians is worlds apart.
The ukrainians/europians they must have seen war in recent times or a 100 years before that. But the yazidis they have faced this everyday for the last 1000 years.
Every generation of theirs has been in such situations being in the middle of chaos.
The ukrainians were tired because of the war but the yazidis to this day live an exhausting life everyday. I respect them for their bravery and spirit to live.

great video, as are some others in this series.
I wish it included him talking about how he behaved towards people like those iraqi soldiers. it's an interesting situation in that he must have pretended to be fine with what they were doing. advocating for those torture victims would have likely just lost him the evidence, as the soldiers would not have let him leave with the pictures if they had known that he disapproved.
it's also an interesting piece of evidence for the soldiers' warped by war sense of reality that they invited him to photograph their torture. it shows them to have remarkably little awareness of this conduct being seen as problematic, particularly because they had essentially no upside weighing against the risk of him using those pictures to oppose what they were doing - what, in their mind, could have been the point of having him take the pictures? I imagine that there really was no bigger consideration than them inviting him to brag to him personally about how tough they are.

When you get to see soldiers in their element, this is how you'd feel. We hear stories about American soldiers.. Iraqi soldiers.. Chinese soldiers etc. Their job is not just to protect their country, their job is to torture or kill their targets and whoever along the way. The US was very smart enough to destroy Al-Jazeera once they invade Iraq during their invasion. This way, they didn't get much incriminating footage against them while they were there. Today we only hear stories from Iraqis but not much on photos or videos of anything. Most of the footage we get to see were journalists from the US and UK which only now tells a different story against what the Americans did. Weird stuff but yeah. All these stories are nasty and sad. I wish all these things never happened

    • @Ass_of_Amalek
      @Ass_of_Amalek Před 9 měsíci +2

@@stephaniejaboh8929 that's pretty much what I meant by "warped by war sense of reality". torturing is not part of the jobs of most soldiers in most armies, but various NATO special forces were involved with torture in iraq similar circumstances, and they did mention in the video that those iraqi soldiers are special forces trained by those guys. torture isn't necessary though to make soldiers change, the fact that even a regulated war is organised mass murder tends to suffice.
edit: oops the middle of this post was a garbled mess of sentence fragments, was too tired when I wrote it xD
