I had the pleasure of meeting Oystein on the Borknagar US tour last year in May. He (and the rest of the members I met) were all super nice dudes, and that experience made me an even bigger Borknagar fan than I was before. Great interview as usual!

You’re really smashing it out the park with these interviews lately Jerry, fantastic. It’s great to see so many black metal artists willing to talk about their vision rather than trying to put on a fake persona all the time.

Great interview. A great view into yet another metal head ...
So, the flag thing seem to be a topic that is often chosen. I would try to answer - but first thing first : The Nordic culture have one thing in common: We are often very individualistic. That is how come for instance skiing was one way or another a big part of our common history. Relax, I know hockey is way bigger than skiing in Finland - but I am talking about historic. How come individualism is a thing? People often did live far away from each other. Skiing was once a way of transportation. Indivialism - how people survived in places where people "should not be able to live".Farmers could not rely on others to bring them food. Being alone in the woods? One has to trust the inner lone self.
Scandinavian people did not have a gang culture. Norwegian people who went over to America? They did not form gangs - they where individuals who made it for their family. In modern world - no Scandinavian people would support another Scandinavian just for the sake of our roots. Ever seen a Norwegian stand up for another Norwegian just for the sake of "the blood and history"? No.
Hardly any Scandinavian have the urge to seek out strangers. On the bus? We sit seperate - without much need talking to strangers. We do not walk to the parks to see other people - we prefer to walk in nature. Many of us - prefer to walk where there are no other people to be found. Individualism is often our core. Most of this stem from the countryside. The countryside has kept tales, folk music - and also where much of the metal music do come from. Black metal was not a cool club in the city - it often came from people being away from other people. The city manufactured the fake world - while the countryside kept the soul ...
Nature is the only thing left from what once was! First christianity came - then the modern world, spilling poison and chopping roots ... Nature is where the Norse Gods is to be found - nature is where sanity and understanding is kept best alive! People who does not belive in old Norse Gods? At least they kept the old saying about "Nature is the worlds finest pharmacy".
To the flag part - and my answer. First of all - Norway have been ruled by Denmark - and in union with Sweden. That is a simple start to it all of getting to understand the flag thing - if that is even a thing. I just seem to remember Taake and the flag bit have been mentioned before.
The music scene: Sweden have thousands more bands with the flag on the cover of the album. Sure - many of these albums and bands is probably "on the bad page". Raggare and the punk scene did at least use the Swedish flag in the past. Norway hardly had any punk bands - nothing like Sweden. The "raggare" culture is to be found in Norway close to the Swedish boarder - and of course: On the countryside, where people do slide and slope with tractors and old Volvo`s and Fords. The culture for it - is yet again nothing like in Sweden. Not my scenary - but cudos to most sub culture who does not obey State or forced religion!
The flag part: Sweden had way more of a problem with nazi history than Norway. Do not know much about Finland on this topic - all I know is the symbol of the airforce. Do not know anything about flag culture of Finland - apart from Jerry saying it is often seen in "dodgy firms". For me it is strange - because Finland always seem as the only country up North where people seems united. The army of Finland has always been my biggest crush - and I adore the Finland way: Individuals - not any need of the yanks! And once again: The Winter War is why I love Finland! Anyway - the Norwegian s fighting the Germans during WW2? Some type of "nationalism" was reborn. Either the Norwegian flag - or other symbols, like "binders" or wearing a red snow hat. Thats correct - a red hat way before red caps and so on. Norwegian nationalism and flags has not really had any hand in hand with neo nazism. There was a small margin of groups back in the 80`s and 90`s. The latest number according to the National State TV: There is is 24 Norwegian neo nazis to be found in Norway. Norway also have stupid companies using the Norwegian flag on their products world wide...
Political: A swedish politician once said Norway being the last Soviet state! Socialism did fight christianity - bravo - but did also brainwash and melt our history. The nationalism has been chopped down by the red side. They only want people to obey or need the State. Look at how many people that is either working for the state - or is in the need of state funding. Norway tops everyone on the OECD's overview of the size of the public sector as a share of value creation, about seven % more than Finland. The last "natonalism" in Norway was during the Winter Olympics in 94 in Lillehammer. Yes - there is the natonal day, where everyone is using the flag. I hate it - but for a different reason than Borknager. For me - it is the day when people who the rest of the year does not give a shit about Norway dress up and take photos. Nowdays - it is all about being woke and keep the history down. Socialism or christianity: They do not keep the past holy.
I have a Norwegian flag inked the right way, aka the cross facing down. I also have Norwegian art and rune by ink on my body. The runes - last seen used by some Nordic movement group. Stand solid - have your own ideas is my saying. Black metal, vikings, nature - symbols and so on? Own the inner self and own way of thinking - do not be a sheep! I have not once been asked if I am a nazi. The only thing is abroad - people have way bigger thoughts and respect about Norways history than most Norwegians. Hail the people who did build Norway - hail the past. But Norway of today? Fuck it all! That is also why many of the black metal bands have used the flag: They are most likely socialistic/very left leaning - and often turn the flag to mock in different aspects. Either towards the forced christianity - the system, or the modern weakness of spineless spawn of what once was majestic.
*sorry for all the spelling mistakes and - yet another long reply.
    SISU!

Thanks for the long, deep comment. Yes, I do realize what you're talking about and I hear you. The funny thing is: people don't so much as to ASK if someone, like me, is a nazi. They just assume or jump into quick conclusions. Funny and ironic, isn't it? The very same people who get butthurt and say "did you just assume my gender?" are ready to jump into assumptions about others. Hypocrisy.
I'm not a nazi, I'm not in the right. I'm not a socialist, I'm not in the left. I steer away from political people. They are not my kind. I stare into nihilistic void and many don't undrestand it. It's not fine, but it is what it is.

If people do follow one certain religion or political party? The more slaves they are. They have to carve and fit their thoughts, mind, soul and freedom - into a box made by others to fit. Fit in, become a slave to what is seen as "the only right way" to live life. One has to obey, be a slave - where they try to hinder other people to be free.
I am not perfect, nor am I better - I am just free. I do not have any need to claim "I am such a good person, so open minded, follow me, follow us " ... I am a misantrhrope, but also no problem helping without getting any credit. The more cred people seek? Look at social media: "I am such a good person, I am open minded, I am all about open boaders, helping and care". These people are often the first to put label on any kind of people outside their little red circle of their own rules and selfproclaimed truth. Just as the christians talked about share and care - when it was all about their own gain and power in the community.
Be free - with different aspects of thoughts and standing. Contradictions? I say different layers. Paradoxical opinions, without a fixed pattern - freedom! What other people will say - or use as labels? I do not care. Sure, injustice is fine to fight - but not important if the oposition is non important. People who seek sheep hurd just to fit in? They will always have the need focus on others, so they do not have to focus on themselves and their poor life. Back in my days - misfits did find black metal. That might be seen as a sheep club by some? But still very individualistic - without having any need to have one answer! Again - I could be mistaken - but always found black metal as a perfect fit with freedom and the holy room in our inner self. All the feelings who get pushed, pulled, and embalmed,. The world of music where one does not need to speak, just enjoy and embrace! For me black metal is like nature: It is best enjoyed with the inner self, never with other people.
Black metal and nature - freedom, and exclusive gift to the inner self. No room for others, just as ... I have zero care what others peoples assumptions or labels are. People who have a box fit life? Slaves who hate other people and their freedom! Be free - be as you are!
Being stoic, nihilistic or even fucked up as me - misanthropic? I find it all to have certain pathern that does fill the Norse version well. Old, and cold - with care for freedom. I do not care what others do and think - just do not push stuff to my head or enter my space. I am not better than anyone - I just want to be freedom.
Never curious about what others are. If people think it is important - they will tell. Symbols, history and what once was? I enjoy - but do not have any need for others to feel, think or agree - freedom!
I say all people make assumptions. The only difference is: The people who claim to be above, is often bader than the people one thought was the worst.
Keep up the good work! - Vapaus - individualismi, oma voima - oma elämä - vapaus -

Thanks for your comment. I agree: freedom to be free is essential. We are not here to please or brownnose ohers. We are here to live our lives. A lot of ppl try to box me in this or that, assuming what I am. Fuck them.
LIke they say in a state in USA: live free or die.

Also would like to add that your interviews are the best, by far. I prefer the interviews that are more like a conversation compared to the "Standard question 1. Standard answer 1." format, so to speak.
