An $86 Carburetor on a Ford Straight 6

  • My carb wasn’t acting correctly. I had seen two separate receipts from a previous owner for a carb rebuild so either they did a bad job, something came through the fuel system and blocked up the carb yet again or this was just a bad carb. Amazon had a replacement carb list NEW for $86. Could this be the cheap and easy answer?

Excellent no-nonsense, no frills review. Thank you for taking the time and energy to do a comprehensive and objective review. Great assessment and display of rust "somewhere" going into the carb/engine. Definitely makes me think twice about the carb I am trying to find for my '66 Mustang 6-Cyliner!

Glad it was helpful! After my experience I think you would be better rebuilding what you have or spending a little more for a rebuilt one at RockAuto. I ended up replacing the tank (which wasn't the issue) and all the fuel line (which was the issue) with Nickle Copper (that stuff is the best) fuel line that I bent myself using sockets in a vice and the old line as a guide. I then drove that car from Harrisburg PA to San Francisco and back. :) Yes I had some issue but fuel and fuel delivery wasn't one of them.

I bought one and installed it on my 1980 Ford F-100 with a 4.9 inline six cylinder and it works great!
Only adjustment I had to make was the hot idle as it was a little low for my truck, idle mixture was spot on!

I've purchased a couple eBay Chinese carbs for various ATV projects, just as a word of caution I've always taken them apart and inspected the passages for metal shavings and sure enough there's been left over chips from the manufacturing process. Everything was fine after a good cleaning, just wanted to let people know if they ever have issues with tuning a Chinese carb is to check for metal debris. Thanks for the video!

I just discovered your channel, such a nice christmas present, I'll be watching your videos. Your presentation is very good. I'm a 70 year old man who grew up with these early mustangs and mavericks. My parents in the 1960', 70's drove econolines and mavericks with six cylinders. My mother loved her Maverick, 6 cylinder , auto, P/S. They always started in below zero weather in central Minnesota, just had to keep the batteries fresh, those mechanical voltage regulators were tempermental. So, when I was in the Navy in the seventies I drove Mustang, 1966 2+2 fast back with 200 six and top loader four speed with hurst shifter all over the country, never had a problem. Today I drive a 1977 f150 300 six with c4 trans, P/S. Great cars and trucks back then, I live in the midwest in a small town, not leaving, they still sell regular gas here for my old trusty-truck.

Thank you for the kind words and for watching. Before you order one of those carbs you might want to check out the follow up video. I developed a flat spot after a couple of months. :) I too drove 6 cylinder Mustang during my time in the service during the mid 80's I was an Air Force Jet engine mechanic stationed North Carolina. Both of mine were 67's with 200 6's one was an auto and one a three speed. I drove those cars back then because they were reliable, cheap, and easy to keep on the road. They made plenty of trips back to Pennsylvania none of them quickly but they got me where i needed to go.

around 2020, I decided to delete the feedback system in my truck because it really was not running well at all, so I installed a vacuum distributor and in order to do that I had to replace the carb too. I went with the amazon special carburetor like you have, and I did add a manual choke to it just because I wanted one in there. so after I had everything snapped into place, and I tuned the carburetor I was actually impressed with a cheap carburetor like that one. I might try to go the next level and install a 2 or 4 bbl, or maybe find a manifold that you can mount two single bbl carbs onto, but right now this carb is serving me well.
