    Just when I thought it was time to look into fuel injection for my 1960s carbureted car. I've been tuning these carbs for almost 35 years but it's always a hassle and they (dual carbs) always need attention. Different seasons, different altitudes when traveling, etc. I should have known that someone like you would utilize our existing modern tech to create something like this. Well done.

    The most common question I get asked about the Carb Cheater on my car is fuel mileage. I don't have an answer yet for two reasons... I don't really pay attention to my mileage, and I haven't been able to drive the car enough since installing the CC to notice any change. But I guarantee the fuel mileage is at the very least better than it was before running the Cheater and letting it do it's thing all by itself. Top that off with the engine just plain running better all around, and I don't have to think about what's going on with the carb. I'm not nearly as adept at tuning a carb (and timing) as a lot of people and this has helped tremendously. 👌

    Nice work on the cheater Luke. Been working on carbs for about 35 years and I can see the usefulness of this tool, especially for somebody without much experience with carbureted engines. Widebands were a game changers but this tool knocks it out of the park. You have managed to apply technology from your day job to one of your passions. I hope you sell a ton of these or somebody like Holley writes you a big fat check. I know a lot of people with 15 year’s experience with a specific technology and they have mastered it, just as you have. 🇨🇦 So in a nutshell if you tune your carb ever so slightly rich throughout its operational range the Carb Cheater with it's controlled vacuum leak will bring it back to the target AFR of your choosing. Conversely though if your carb is tuned too lean during some part of it's operation the Carb Cheater won't be able to hit the desired AFR because it doesn't have a provision to add fuel. Have I got this correct. 🇨🇦

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  Před rokem +10

      That is correct - if your leaner than 15, jet richer - a user can see that right in front of their face, and they will definitely know they are lean. That's getting into danger territory at a prolonged cruise and should be actively avoided

    • @researchandbuild1751
      @researchandbuild1751 Před rokem +2

      @@ThunderHead289 Hmm I'm having a dumb moment. If you tune the carb slightly rich, how could a vacuum *leak* make it leaner? Wouldn't you have to add more air to lean it out? A leak would remove air. I'm getting myself confused. OOOH I think I get it, the air comes INTO the engine through the vacuum leak, "behind" the carb, to lean it out. Ok.
      I guess what I'm wondering in addition though is will this actually cause "less fuel" to come in through the carb itself? Or is it just adding more air to lean the fuel out? In other words, if you carb is set to rich, it uses more fuel. Do you think it would continue to release that same amount of fuel? Or will the vacuum leak cause "less vacuum" on the carb plates too, thus decreasing the fuel coming in? Interestingly the concept seems like it might work two ways at the same time - it lets more air into the cylinder which can lean it out, AND it in theory could cause less fuel to be pulled through the carb, thus also leaning out. Meaning it's a multivariable problem (one variable causes two other variables to change at the same time) which is complex.

    • @16vSciroccoboi
      @16vSciroccoboi Před rokem +2

      @@researchandbuild1751 adding a vacuum leak will cause less fuel to be drawn through the carb. The carb meters fuel due to airflow through it, if you flow air around it, it meters less fuel.
      Routing the air around the carb causes the mixture to lean out because it's adding air, but at the same time for a given rpm/load the carb will supply less fuel since that air isn't flowing through it.

    So my understanding is that Carb Cheater operates by continuously monitoring exhaust CO via wide band sensor, with this data the control module corrects for overly rich Air/Fuel via controlled vacuum release by IAC valve to maintain closest possible 14:1 Air/Fuel ratio? This is the technology the Auto manf. used to control carbs before going to fuel injection. Although with your product it allows this tunability available for any carbureted engine. Thanks for making this available to purchase. With the correct marketing, and production... this will be a very successful business for you.

    The Carb Cheater is a stand-alone unit that does NOT need a phone to do its job after initial setup.
    The App and phone interface is providing data that is handy for tuning, operation, and satisfying curiosity of how your engine is doing at any moment.

    I'd like to see this unit used on a blow-thru setup, drawing pressurized air from the hat and dumping it through the carb plate. Boost pressure above the carb is usually higher than manifold pressure.
    The carb could be jetted to be on the rich side under all conditions and the cheater could just bleed extra air to lean it out. Might be a huge advantage for a blow-thru setup.
    Or a good blow-thru setup that has great WOT afr, the cheater could just trim the fat off of cruise and maybe part throttle.

      One thing is it adjusts by a controlled vacuum leak, similar to old 80s tech GM had. So for it to work it would be trying to "add air" to a vacuum, if it's a blow thru then manifold would be pressurized and then it "might" at best be a automatic low volume blowout valve. I would guess that it has checkvalve built in so it only leaks air INTO the manifold and not let pressure bleed out of it.

    • @Mark-Willis
      @Mark-Willis Před rokem +5

      @@markmatt9174 generally the hat sees higher pressure than the manifold, so the manifold would be acting as a "vacuum" compared to hat pressure. So hat pressure would easily overcome manifold pressure and be adding clean air to lean out the mix. Same exact function as it was designed for, but instead of drawing atmospheric air, it would be drawing boosted air from the hat.
      Might not work well at all, but I hope they test it, as it sounds promising. Science is cool

    Something I noticed watching MP on the Carb Cheater gauge screen; when you were accelerating or climbing it seemed that your MP was lower than at idle or when the truck was coasting downhill. Now I've never had a MP gauge available to me in a car, but as a helicopter pilot (piston engine, carbureted, naturally aspirated), I have one and I need to watch it when applying throttle to make sure I don't apply too much power. There's a red mark on the gauge face that is the absolute max MP I'm allowed to pull -- and there is an adjustment table that takes that highest permitted MP and adjusts it for atmospheric pressure and temp -- but it's easy to pull more if you're not careful (there is no system to stop from you from pulling more). But my point is that as I add throttle in a helicopter, MP goes up.
    Seems to work the opposite for some reason with your truck. As your truck was stopped and idling, you were at 19-21" MP, but when accelerating from a stop and later at steady speed, you were down into the 15-16" range except when shifting, when MP went up until you were back on the throttle, then right back down to about 16". It's the opposite of what I'd expect. Don't know if you have any experience with aircraft engines. Why is this? It makes no sense to me.

    An electronically controlled air - leak (or vacuum leak) to atmosphere using an auxiliary air valve motor, a vacuum supply mounted after the carb and a control app, very clever. A tool to clean up emissions and restore power. You could use this along with a cat converter to keep the EPA happy, if needed. You may have just extended the use of carburettors for many years to come while being able to pass emissions testing. It would be interesting to see a back to back test on an original factory carbureted smog engine of the 70’s with this system added and the original emissions systems connected, then disconnected. You maybe able to just run your system and get rid of the original factory power robbing emission systems and still pass the tests.

      That's a great suggestion that you can do to show us! All you need is a Carb Cheater (CC) kit & baseplate chosen for a more modern carbureted car you own. Then for that old model T or Buic make a custom insulated baseplate to fit the old car manifold & carburetor, with fittings just like on the CC kit you bought. Install & tune... then away you go! Anything that has a carburetor & ran on gasoline should run better with a CC kit. Heck even a riding mower will run better with a CC kit. Be the first person to do it & let us know your results! Good luck!

      Well what about a little 2 barrel Holley/Weber like on Ford Pintos or a real Weber 32/36 DGV thatopens a primary throttle barrel a lot before opening the secondary barrel for all the power. If a tiny 1 barrel operated independently most of the time, the big power large carb would just sit there unused, with gasoline in the bowl absorbing heat, boiling out, vapor locking, etc. That's the whole point of having multiple barrels feeding from a common fuel bowl, so that fresh, cool fuel is continually moved thru the bowl to reduce the chances of fuel percolation/vapor lock & the resulting poor engine performance. What you suggest can be accomplished with a carburetor that has independent primary & secondary barrels/venturis, especially if you switch to a smaller cfm carb of similar configuration. An example: Switch from a 600 cfm Holley 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries to a 390 cfm 4 barrel with vac. secondaries. Add the Carb Cheater, tune for Stoichiometric (14.6 to 1 AFR) to slichtly rich (like 14.2 to 1 AFR) THEN activate the Auto Tune feature of Carb Cheater & gradually selecting a leaner AFR (like 14.8 & test drive,) then leaner & leaner AFR's then test drive until driveability starts to suffer. Then richen AFR slightly for engine safety. The CC tunes for idle & light cruise throttle to increase fuel economy. The CC leaves the medium & full throttle AFR's alone so high power AFR's can remain richer for safe engine performance! You get to have your cake and eat it too ! No complex multi carb setup needed! Just simplicity, Carb Cheater, a little initial carb tuning, ignition tuning (see Uncle Lukes ign. tuning videos) & CC will do the rest! Drive normal & enjoy better carb performance & fuel economy!

  • @lamboferruccio
    @lamboferruccio Před rokem

    Pretty cool product there, so my take on it is this…
    1. First of all your carb has to be in good working order to begin with, it’s not going to fix a gummed up leaky old carburetor.
    2. It essentially performs three functions, it measures AFR’s, measures manifold vacuum and controls idle.
    3. It measures AFR’s to give you the data you need to properly tune a carb under all conditions but it won’t tune the carb for you, you still need to jet the carb yourself for optimum performance.
    4. It introduces a controlled vacuum leak via the idle solenoid under idle and low load conditions to fine tune idle and AFR’s, it doesn’t add fuel it adds air.
    5. It measures manifold absolute pressure via the map sensor to allow the computer to see load conditions.
    6. The autotune feature is only as effective as the jetting in the carb allows, if under full load and is running lean the autotune feature isn’t going to add the fuel the engine wants, only jetting will do that.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  Před rokem +2

      Carb cheater uses rpm, afr, and load to decide what it's doing indeed. It's a tuning tool at its core since most folks carbs are tuned like hot garbage - usually pretty rich. No more guess work, someone can get their ride decent and let cc handle the anomalies (which most people don't realize how prevalent anomalies are - if you run a wideband, you do).
      It's also a gps speedo, Rev limiter, full graphing datalogger, ignition lock, and has a programmable rpm window switch relay on board.
