    You cannot beat the B&H deal of the camera with kit lens, a telephoto lens (45 to 150 mm), UV filter, 32 GB memory card and camera bad... all for $497.99. Bough mine last month and love it.

    So much camera for the money. Still in love years later. The kit lens is also the best kit lens I've ever had with a camera and I've been doing this a very long time.

    Hello my friend from Atlanta Georgia wow that Panasonic is packed with features Panasonic is number one I don't care what anybody says they make a great camera and mostly they have a viewfinder on their compact cameras where Canon and some of the other manufacturers don't even give you that and I believe in having a viewfinder specially in sunlight I don't depend on the screen in sunlight you have to have 20/20 vision to look at that screen in sunlight because of the glare but the viewfinder is really great I have a couple of their cameras the ZS 85 and ZS50 and to me these are both great cameras they work excellent but this camera that youour showing looks a little more beefier and heavy just by looking at it thank you so much for your presentation I thought it was excellent

    Great review - I'm wavering between the Panny and an Olympus - I have no Olympus cameras so desperately want to try one - but right now the GX80 is marking an awful lot of cards..... Olympus needs to get their pricing on the Pen or Pen type cameras into more reasonable territory. For now it looks like the GX80 is the smarter buy... in my opinion of course

    Happy New Year!
    I've just bought this camera complete with the 12-32 compact kit lens. I think it is great for its compact size. The best part and what persuaded me to buy is the current price after the £200 Cashback offer. It nets down to £247 for body only and £347 with the single kit lens. That's half the price Mathieu thought was one of the best deals available back in June or July.
    I'm quite familiar with Lumix G series cameras, my last one being a G7 with a G6 preceding it. I'm amazed at the extra features they incorporate with each new generation. As far as the GX80 goes, I love the in-body image stabilisation, extra 4K still features, its compact size and its price. Not so keen on losing several Fn buttons or on the rear control wheel. This camera will replace my Fuji X20, as they are both about the same size as long as either the kit lens or one of several other compact ones available are fitted. The GX80 feels much heavier though. Its also far more advanced [than the X20] and, of course, has the versatility of fitting any M4/3 lens on it.

      +John M Flores : Do you get the twitch or jerky movement when panning as shown on review? My copy (so far) doesn't have this problem. Wondering if I got lucky or if it's a telephoto lens thing? I've panned with kit 12-32mm and 25mm 1.4 Fotasy in 4k. I have telephoto lenses but I'm waiting for a converter.
      I'm surprised by the results. Kit lens is lovely and stable. I wasn't expecting much as I have shaky noodle arms. Initially, I was searching for a cam + a gimbal but now I don't need that combo. I really love the inconspicuous minimalist boring box design. Personally not a fan busy retro multi dial look. I would say the grip is iffy even with my kid sized hands. It's not deep enough. Maybe add a hot shoe handle for video? But the other stuff, like in camera USB charging, electronic shutter, the extras makes thing easier. I love it so far.

    • @JohnMFlores
      @JohnMFlores Před 8 lety +1

      Line Push Yeah, horizontal pans are not the best. I tried to set stabilization for panning (like in photo modes) but that feature is not available when shooting video. I suspect that longer lenses magnify the problem, literally.
      "Shaky noodle arms" LOL. I feel the same way and I was also considering a gimbal for an upcoming motorcycle trip but I think I'll make do without one.
      My brother has the GX7 and the grip is much better. I walked a mile with the GX85 yesterday and at first my fingers got tired because I was holding on tightly. Once I relaxed my hold and let my fingers and thumb press lightly against the camera things were better. And the wrist strap is there, just in case.

    Great review, many thanks for the comparison between the GX80 and the GX7. I was thinking about upgrading, but will stick with the GX7. I don't need many of the 4K features and focus bracketing. I like the new shutter and better IS and DFD but wont trade it against the tilting viewfinder, the better grip on the GX7, the MF/AF switch and the better body material. In fact, practically none of my GX7 photos are not in focus or show problems with IS. And BTW, I consider the GX7 as one of the best looking cameras ever. This year I will invest in lenses instead and wait for next years mft lineup.

    Great review! But to be honest, if they would have put in the AF/MF dial and the tilting EVF as well as an external mic input (I think you forgot this one, big one for me) instead of deliberately leaving these things out, then they might as well completely stop selling the GX8... I think it is already a better camera then the GX8... better IBIS and much better shutter (no more shutter shock)

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      +STEHH87 Yep, I think that they tried to not make the camera too close to the GX8 otherwise because of the lower price it could have become a too "dangerous" competitor. But then at the same time you downgrade one product so that you can have two. I guess there isn't a perfect solution. Too many cameras out there :D
      P.S.: you are right about the mic input, but I guess the smaller size of the camera makes it more difficult in terms of hardware to include that as well.

    Just subscribed! Really enjoy your honest, straightforward reviews ... I was all set to jump on a GX8 (esp. now they are nearly half what they used to be..) but I have concerns about the shuttershock I've heard about. But I'm wavering on a GX80 because the EVF on the GX8 looks to be better than the GX80 (I too wear glasses and it makes a difference). Also, the weather sealing, while not a huge deciding factor sure would be nice...What are your thoughts? Which would you choose with limited funds? Thanks!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      The EVF is definitely better on the GX8 and weather sealing is a welcome addition. The shutter shock is quite annoying. Personally I sold my GX8 and bought the GX80. I'll use it mainly for product shots and for my youtube videos as it has everything I need (4K, IBIS, compactness etc). I guess it depends on what your needs are and what kind of shooting you are planning to make. For example if you shoot lots of outdoor sports or wildlife where the weather is not always on your side, weather sealing can help.

    I found that panning is a little jerky in 4K video even on a tripod, as you know scaling it down to 1080p works wonders... The little jerkiness that it has greatly reduces if my goes away in MP4 or AVCHD 1080p 60 fps. That's my experience videoing dressage, the slower you pan the better you will be. BTW I looked at SONY's camera and it didn't have nearly all the feature that the Panny has other than the megapixels and ability to take and shot in really low light...but you can;t beat the price. The only thing I DO NOT LIKE is the little plastic door and the locking mechanism which requires you to manually move it to close... I wish it was spring loaded ... but that's the worst of it for me. Oh yes one more I wish the 4K was in 60 fps too. Great review and thank you

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      +Nuno Rodrigues you would get mixed results I think. If you have a look at my IBIS comparison between the GX80 and the Pen F, there are a few shots where I follow a person walking and some of these GX80 shots are sligthly out of focus because I was using C-AF. It's worst with Olympus lenses but still it's not 100% accurate.

      The RX100 IV has great slow motion capabilities but I wouldn't use it as my main camera for video: battery life drains really fast and 4K is limited to 5min per clip.

    Is the EVF good? Because I read a review from DP that said the EVF was bad because of the 16:9 ratio, like the color tearing was really noticeable in bright light. And is the image really small since it's in 16:9 compared to 4:3? In your review you didn't mention it so I'm hoping it isn't a big issue. The GX85 has the best stabilisation but the GX8 does well with OIS lenses that are compatible with Dual IS. The GX8 has a larger EVF and better grip. However it has sever shutter shock between 1/50 and 1/320s (an issue that Panasonic solved in the GX85).

Focal length is fixed therefore it doesn't matter if it goes on full or crop frame argument makes sense to me, but I am not certain. What do you suggest? Great review, btw.

    Very useful review, Mathieu, thank you.
    However, the AF in video mode of this camera is still pretty bad compared to the best systems out there (Sony´s phase detect, and Canon´s dual-pixel) as it´s already been proved in several DPreview threads where they are discussing this topic.
    As such, and for someone like me, whose main interest is taking videos handheld, an unusually good stabilization does not compensate at all a potentially blurry mess that can take several seconds to refocus on a simple subject, as it can be seen elsewhere. And maybe that´s not an important thing to you, but it is the n1 reason why people like me won´t be able to purchase this otherwise interesting camera, and as a result, the one thing I miss the most in your review.
    Just my 2 cents.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety +1

      +1650million thanks. It is important and I mention it in the AF chapter. I didn't put it in a separate topic because there isn't much to say beyond the fact that it is slower. Plus it also depends on the type of shooting you need to do. I worked as a professional filmmaker for years and AF was never an option. It's true that lately some cameras are improving like the a6300 and also the X-Pro2 does surprisingly well. The problem is related to DfD: it is a contrast detection system and has its limits. I think Panasonic should move to phase detection at some point.

    • @1650million
      @1650million Před 8 lety +1

      +Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) I´m no professional, and I certainly don´t intend to be, I´m just a guy who has big aspirations, such as shooting dogs, moving cats or even nasty kids. I am someone who will never, ever buy a camera that requires me to do something as painful as trying to manually focus things in motion, and even more so when we have ILCs in the market that perform admirably, and have had them for years, such as the a6000, 70D or NX1, among others (No idea about the X-Pro2, TBH).
      The point being, a reliable AF in video mode is a tremendously useful feature for anyone who is even mildly interested in video (other than manual-focusing pros) and a sore disappointment in a 2016 camera, that´s why I found your "the performance is low" comment in the video a bit "lacking"...
      Anyway Mathieu, I think my point is more than clear, thanks for your info, again.

    Excellence review!! I am interested in this one since my EM5 just broke down and I need to find some camera to use. What do you think?
    Well, tilt EVF is not a big problem to me since EM5 doesn't has it from the beginning but it will be very useful for my beloved area (Macro). No built-in wireless flash trigger and no weather seal is quite a pain for me as well. Light composition is grey area for me because I think it will be the same as Olympus's.
    How about the quality of RAW file? I use it so often before the camera broke down.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety +1

      +Kunut Manathanya the RAW file is good and overall the IQ is superior to the original E-M5 that has an older sensor (especially at high ISO, past 3200).
      However since you know Olympus cameras already, why not consider the E-M5 II? It's weather sealed and has wireless flash trigger with the supplied FL-LM3 flash. If you want the spent less, there is also the E-M10 II (but you loose weather sealing).

    • @Zosazat
      @Zosazat Před 8 lety

      I am thinking about EM5 mkii as well, I really love the design. Here are the reasons why I look at Panasonic;
      1. They got panorama in-camera (still curious why Olympus didn't make this function?) which I think I may use more frequent than flash trigger.
      2. Focus speed is quite better for me but most of my lenses are Olympus's, not sure it will be any difference.
      2. GX80 got a built-in flash
      3. The body size is quite similar (GX8 is too big for me) and also got IBIS
      4. I afraid of camera fault and other QC problems. For 2 years of use EM5, I got shutter curtain fault twice (one after warranty end and second one is after extra 6-month warranty end but this time I didn't fix it but will find a new camera instead). This is not include other faults that I face on the first year of use.
      I love EM5 but with this annoying problems, if there are any better option, I would take it.
      I guess I need to go to some shop and try this GX80 myself to see if I like it or not.

      with the GX80 you would benefit of the Dual IS system with that lens so there is a significant improvement. The new camera also has a new shutter mechanism that eliminates any problem of shutter shock. That being said, the GX7 has a better grip in my opinion. With the Pen F you appreciate the precise design and the great feel with its dials, it feels more like a camera from the start. The GX80 has a more modern design and is more convenient as an hybrid solution. The connection might be less "emotional" but it gets the job done and it does it well. Actually I'm considering replacing my GX8 with the GX80 for our youtube videos and the shots we need for our website. It's convenient to have one small camera that can do everything.

      +danit elgev a larger sensor can give you more dynamic range and better high ISO performance but often the difference between APS-C and micro four thirds is not his huge. There is also the shallow depth of field factor: with the same aperture and field of view, you'll have a shallower result on the the Canon. One solution is to use fast primes on the GX80 which give you excellent results wide open already.

    Which one is better deal between canon M50 and Panasonic gx85 for travel and family photography?
    Thank you

      I would choose the GX85. There is more lens choice, the camera has a lot of nice features and excellent image stabilisation. The M50 has a better autofocus however.

    Hi! I want a second camera for using as a travel/onthegocamera. I have my another one when I do some photo works but a bit big to bring everyday and on travels. Im looking for a camera good in both stills and video but there is a jungle:) I had looked into to just start up with a GM1, kit with the 12-32 mm as many has liked that camera. But then after watching some reviews maybe the GX 80, the lx 100 or even the tz100 is an option. The LX 100 seems nice but misses some of the good stuff in the GX85. Do you think it comes a new LX model in september? Hope you can advise me here and thanks for all of your nice reviews.

      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      Rumors suggest that a new LX camera is coming but even if it is true, between the announcement and the actual release, it probably won't be available before fall.
      The GX85 has everything you need: good IQ, excellent video, in-body stabilization, small and compact. It's one of the best quality/price mirrorless camera on the market right now (all brands included).

    Which one do you recommend to someone who use only manual settings on an really old lady (Leica V-lux 1, 2006) for landscapes, food photography, animals and portraits ? A GX80 or a G7 ?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      The IQ is basically identical on both cameras. You get a little bit of extra sharpness with the GX80 because it lacks the AA filter. The G7 has a moe substantial grip, the GX80 is more recent and more advanced concerning certain features (5-axis stabilisation). This article could be of help as well:

    Tell me please. I want to buy a GX80 to shoot art videos for myself. Stimulated fotik. So, will the matrix stabilization of the GX80 work with lenses without O.I.S.? Or do you need a lens with O.I.S.?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 7 lety

      The sensor stabilisation (5-axis) also works with olympus and panasonic lenses that lack OIS. You can even adapt third party lenses and still use in-body stabilisation (you need to set the focal length manually).

    Hello sir! I'm trying to decide which to buy for my first camera, the GX8 or the GX80? Do you think the GX80 has a strong build quality? even without the weather-sealing. I know the stabilisation of the GX80 is slightly better than the GX8, but the weather-sealing was a big downgrade, for me. And from where I am from, I've been hearing that our customer service for Panasonic camera's really suck. hahaha! Please help :). Thank you!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety

      +Luis Logarta the GX80 build quality is good so if you are just worried about that you should be fine. The IBIS is a excellent improvement. If you need weather sealing because of rain or other difficult conditions, the you'll be safer with the GX8.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 8 lety +2

      the 12-32mm kit lens is not bad for a start. Very compact with decent sharpness. Then there is also the Panasonic 14-140mm if you want an all purpose zoom lens for every situations. Or you can go with a fast prime lens like the Pana 25mm f/1.7 that you can also find at a very attractive price.

    • @therealLOGS
      @therealLOGS Před 8 lety

      I think I'll go for the 25mm! Thank you so much for the help sir, much appreciated! :)

    Good review. Would you still recommend this in sept. 2017 as a B camera to a GH4? $500 bucks is pretty tempting.

      Sorry...referring to video of course. Will be using professionally as B camera...or is there something else in the price range ud suggst??

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 7 lety

      I think it's an excellent B camera. Small and compact but the quality is there. The only thing is that you don't have some picture profiles like Cine-Like D and V, and of course less video settings in comparison to the GH4. In the past I remember using the GH3 and GX7 side by side and it worked quite well.

    • @dawhitecastle
      @dawhitecastle Před 7 lety

      Thanks for your reply. I have seen a couple of videos that show how to download Cine-Like D to the camera now. I ordered one and it is coming today! Should be a great addition to my Lumix collection.

    Panasonic GX8 or G85 with 12-32? What would you choose? Or the Panasonic GX85 wih 14-140?
    Thanks! Im really doubting...

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Před 7 lety

      The G85 has the best ergonomics and is weather sealed. IQ is the same as the GX85 but the G85 has a larger EVF than the GX85. The GX85 however is smaller.
      The GX8 has an excellent EVF but can suffer from shutter shock.

    • @timdesmet9870
      @timdesmet9870 Před 7 lety

      Mathieu Gasquet Thanks! I already found out about shutter shock, so I think it is a bit of a deal breaker. Thanks again! I think I will go for the G85 for the ergonomics and the viewfinder, also the back dial is much nicer. Thanks bro, and Nice review you have here!

    Does it merge the postfocus images to get a fully focused shot? Or you have to join them later in lightroom?
