    I'm shopping for a camera and I have to tell you that I've watched this video a few times in the last couple weeks. You are the only person online who really boils down my interests to these exact cameras, updated to 2018:
    - LX100 mark II
    - GX9 (really a GX7 mark III or GX95)
    - GX8
    - Sony a6500 (or a6300)
    - Fujifilm X-T20
    YES! These all share something in common that you really demonstrated. They all aim to combine a semi-pro enthusiast mindset in a compact, attractive package. And then it comes down to lens systems, prices and other intangibles. I love how you lay it out.
    The LX100 is what brought me here (after also deciding the RX100 was too small). It was the direction I was first leaning. I'm glad Panasonic added a touch screen (2018), but it still lacks a tilt screen/viewfinder! 24mm isn't quite wide enough for me either, but I love that it's compact, fixed and fast, like you say.
    I love the focus speed of the a6300/6500, but it's a bit unfriendly as a camera package, and the Sony lenses simply aren't good for sharpness and portability. The X-T20 is amazing with its dials and design, but it doesn't quite feel as good in my hand, and lacks the flat rangefinder minimalism.
    I will compromise with the updated GX85: GX9, which combines all of these cameras into one: great size, pancake zooms, tilting views, modern features and the 20mp sensor! If only it had the dials of the LX100 II/Fuji. Oh and weather sealing! Oh well..
    I've written a review of my decision experience, in which I've featured your video. Thanks!

      Fast forward to 2020 and l'm considering one of the GX9, GX8 or Pen-F as a street camera. The GX8 is about four years old but appeals to me the most. Panasonic giveth and taketh away with the GX9. Better IBIS and monochrome D but too small a body, worse grip and no weather sealing etc.

    Thanks for a wonderful no nonsense comparison from a real photographer - well done Jeff. I bought a GX85 a couple of months ago. Since I have another MFT body and lens collection, this was the way to go for me. Because it is supplanted by the GX9, I got it brand-new for sub $500 with two kit lenses and various other extras. I think it is a great little camera, especially in conjunction with the little Panny 20mm or the 14-140mm zoom.

    Hi, thank you so much for your video! I think it will bring me closer to a decision: GX85 or GX8. I think the advantage of the GX8 is, the camera is weather sealed (better for out-door activities), no plastic body and better for my big hands. The disadvantage for me is, no flashlight on-board. But I will follow your advice, to go to a shop to hold the cameras in my hand and make some shots and test it a bit, when I find a camera-shop. Not much shops left, internet-shops kill the most.
    Thanks again for this very good video.

    Your videos really helped me a lot. I just bought the GX85, the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 and the Panasonic 100-300. I'm planning to take the kit on a cruise in Alaska. To me coming from Canon the 12-35 is amazingly small and AF speed is fast. It's a bargain for $700. I have my doubts about the IQ of the 100 - 300. I'm a bit of a pixel peeper. But I'm not willing to carry a big heavy lens so I will see what the 100 - 300 will do. What you said about buying based on the way you live your life strikes me as right on the mark. Thanks for all the great videos.

    You opened my eyes. I realized I need a fast and bright lens. So I would go with the lx100. I could go with the gx85, but I would never have the money to buy an equivalent lens for it!

    Top review Jeff. Factual and unbiased.
    1) Was wondering which camera you would pick for late afternoon urban/street photography where the light can be challenging as it fades to night, GX85 (for its ibis) or XT10 (for its ISO performance)? I always have a tripod handy but handheld is more fun!
    2) You also mentioned JPEGs at 14-15min. How does the GX85 JPEG's stack up to the XT10, fuji in general?
    Thanks

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 8 lety

      Hi Daniel, My first choice might actually be the Lumix LX100 for its fast lens. But, if you put a good prime on the GX85 or the XT10, they will both be very good and more versatile.
      The XT10 has the APS-c sensor, albeit a 16mp, but the Fujifilm lenses are top notch. Find a comfortable prime and you should do well. The 35mm f2 or the 23mm f1.4 might be a good choice for the street.
      The GX85 is almost as good resolution as the APS-c with the newer sensor technology and no filter. Here the 20mm f1.7 might be good for you. All of the recommended lenses are reputed to be quite good.
      The Lumix technology in the body is a little more advanced; the Fuji lenses are very difficult to beat in a value comparison.
      Finally, I would recommend that you actually handhold each and compare the way each focuses and the way you set the aperture and shutter on each. You will probably like one better than the other. I think you will be very happy with either!

      +Jeff Kahn Thanks Jeff, ended up with the XT10 and 23mm f1.4, you were right, in my hand it felt like a winner. The GX85 was lightning fast to focus with D&D panny tech, noticeably faster than the XT10, but the build was ergonomically a bit small for me in hand. Both solid builds but the XT10 is somewhat more inspiring....did not mind waiting the extra half second or so to focus! Cheers

    nice review - I have the LX100 and GX8 and the GX85 - I miss the EVF of the GX8 :) and the AFS.. lever - but the GX85 is really nice - Flip vs Tilt LCD - I prefer booth - but not possible - as a still camera the Tilt is maybe a bit more practical at times - but I sure like the fact of being able to cover LCD with the flip
    I like to have the school wheel back - love you camera collection - I do have the Lumix ZS100 which is just a fantastic little camera - and takes over the reach of the RX100m4 - in style -
    I like the Fuji IQ - but I love the GX85 with the 5 axis so perfect with prime lenses with no IS which many are -
    yes the LX100 is just a fantastic little camera - I totally agree - at night doing street shooting I love using the LX100 and get great results - and yes my 12-35 F2.8 does not get used much :) as I rather just take the LX100 so I put the 25mm F1.4 on my GX8 or GX85 -
    I look forward to the LX200 - I hope they introduce Touch LCD/Touch To Focus as I suspect they will as it will for sure have the Post Focus and the 4k modes - Also would like to see it with NO AA filter - and few more Fn buttons -
    You are so right on the size and weight - O have Sony A7 and A6000 and Fuji Xt1 as well - but I end up using my Lumix bodies the most - love the many Fn buttons on them / with soft Fn buttons / C1 C2 C3 etc - just a well thought of interface - nice shutters - for me the Lumix has more assured focus over the A6000 and my A7 - yes the A7 and A6000 produce nice images for sure like the Xt1 - but just not as much fun to use - I really feel that most underestimate the Lumix lineup - they are considered the bastard child :)
    The GX85 is just loaded with features - and the 4k photo features are just fantastic - using them more and more
    I am glad to hear from one that has the other brands for a good reason but also really appreciates what Lumix is doing - I am certainly one of them -

      I use all off-camera audio and sync tracks in post. I use all Panasonic mft's, specifically GH and the G7. Their audio is very good, but I got negative feedback when I relied upon it. Too much ambient noise and echo. Off-camera is so much cleaner. About video; I pretty much use mft's because they ave served my purpose so well. Video really needs to be rated for how you want to use it, and my use range is pretty narrow. For these videos, I love my Panasonics.

    Fabulous just the type of review I was looking for. Thanks for posting such a detailed and informative video as I am looking to buy a new camera and the GX80 would seem to fit my needs. I take a lot of action shots of dolphins, seals and wildlife from my kayak as this enables me to get closer than with a boat. Being a lady I want one that does the job and is small to fit the size of my hands. I have been using the Lumix Tz but have found that they are not so good in at low light levels. I want something a little better now. Also hoping that Lumix will bring out a polycarbonate underwater housing for it. I use slo mo and time lapse video and extract shots on my mac but it seems i will be able to do this on the actual camera :) You are a very knowledgeable gentleman :) What video setting does this camera have please?

Thank you for your respond.

      Hi John, I think the AF among all of them is very close and excellent. I would look at which one feels best in your hands. The GX85 is smaller and cheaper with a lot of capabilities. The GX8 is the shooter flagship for Panasonic, but there is little but size and slightly better (hard to see) image quality. Try them both and see which one fits. You many be surprised at how much better one or the other feels to you!

    Nice comparison review. I have my doubts that Sony's backlit sensors "bringing out more resolution" other than the fact it's 20mp. LX100 is great, but it's simply too slow to zoom. I agree about the size yo-yo too. About the Fuji, can you actually change all the settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) when you have it up to your eye? ...I've heard there are issues concerning that. I had a similar thoughts about the GX80's jpg's vs RAW. Finally, I think there is a huge case for the GX85 in terms of value... it beats the rest of the cameras on the table- especially if you want video and IBIS.

    like the camera but because of my early onset of Parkinson Decease, I feel that
    the Stabilization in the GX8 and GX85/80 would be beneficial. I have the 14-140 and 12-32 OIS Lumix lens. There seems to be some great pricing on the GX8 all of a sudden. What camera would you recommend my getting?

    • @jkahnfilms

      The biggest differences between the GX8 and the GX85 are due to their size. Try to get them in your hands to see if one feels better. If not, buy the cheaper of the two because they will both serve you very well!

    Was nice hearing your opinions without all the technical stuff some of the other comparisons do. For someone like me who doesn't know what half the stuff means all I really want to know is will it work, and is it worth the money for what I need. Skip ahead to 2019 and I just snagged the gx85 with an extra lens thrown in (45-145mm) for 450 bucks US. The camera, 128gb sd card, a bag and a little cleaning all came in at 550 dollars after tax. Now I just need to learn how a "real" camera works and what all these settings mean lol. Until then there is always the auto mode I guess.

      The are two important differentiating factors; sensor size and image stabilization. The Fuji has a larger sensor and terrific lenses vs. Panasonic with both In Body Image Stabilization and stabilized lenses. I must admit that I lean to the Panasonic for several rather oblique reasons including the advanced processors, superb Leica co-branded lenses and smaller size. Finally, Panasonic is a much larger and more agressive company.
      However, under certain circumstances, including landscape and other instances where ultimate resolution is of the highest priority, the Fujifilm ould be a great choice.

      Whoa! they're not compatible? how is that? and how are you supposed to know?
      I have other Panasonic OIS lenses, I assumed if they're connected to the camera and the OIS switch is on, they're working.
      is there some kind of synchronization that has to happen between OIS and IBIS?

    • @bantamdraper
      @bantamdraper Před 8 lety +2

      Nope. Not compatible. I'm not sure why. You have to update the firmware on the compatible lenses. Once you do that you will get Dual I.S. as the O.I.S. and IBIS will work together. Apparently the 14-45 and the 45-100 aren't compatible either. Here's a link with info on which lenses are compatible. lumixlounge.com/2015/08/dual-is-firmware/ It's about a year old, so some of the ones listed as future updates may already have new firmware for Dual I.S.
      I have a GX8 and I updated the firmware on my 12-35 2.8 and the 35-100 2.8. It was pretty easy to update and it works great. It was one of the reasons I went from a GH4 to a GX8 (aside from the bump in resolution), plus I have a 3 primes without I.S. (two of them being Olympus lenses) which I can now use on the GX8 with the IBIS. Not as good as Dual I.S. of course, but a lot better than not having any at all

    • @mikemullally4704

      Thanks. Also here's another Panasonic page that gives the versions & links to firmware updates. I had to update 2 of my 5 lenses.
      av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html
      I ran into the Panasonic Rep yesterday. He explained the 100-300mm lens has last generation pin-outs, thus can never be updated. ...not sure I understand that, it has the same 11 pins as my other lenses. I'll be selling mine and upgrading to the 100-400mm.
      So, here's an odd thing I found, your page link above says the 42.4mm H-HS043 is not supported, but I did the firmware upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 and the GX85 now says "Dual" on the the display for this lens. Since the HS model is $1000 less than the Nocticron , I'll take it !!! Anyway, take note, it may be an error on the Panasonic site, my GX85 clearly says "DUAL" with the little shaky hand.
      The other thought I had is the 25mm prime lens does not have stabilization, but when mounted on the GX85 I get stabilization (without the "DUAL" on the display)..... another plus for the GX85.

    Great video. Very helpful advice :). I have been researching for a sometime now have narrowed down to LX100 and A6000. Which one do you thing a good buy?
    The reason I am comparing between a fixed lens and ILC is because of their retail price right now. Almost same priced :). Personally I am not a very enthusiast photographer i.e I will hardly or never going to use a cam in full manual mode. It is always going to be Auto mode and A/S Priority in some cases, that it! Hence I love LX100. I love its all manual dials, very easy to use, and very accessible for a novice like me to go ahead and use it. I hate the PASM dials as I never tend to move it from P mode and hate changing Aperture and ISO using the buttons hehe, plus LX100 has an amazing LEICA lens, but just 12.5MP. On the other hand A6000 which comes at the same price has more advance features, it has interchangeable lens, larger sensor, more pixles, tillable screen, builtin flash. If I go for A6000 I am sure I will be using the stick lens only in the foreseeable future.
    So how does LX100 compare with A6000 with stock lens only? Does the lower mega pixel count on LX100 an issue? Personally I really want to buy the LX100 but on second thought A6000 seems a smart choice.
    Also, would you suggest the Panasonic GX7 over LX100?
    Would love to hear your thoughts and will surely help in my final decision.
    Thank You.

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 8 lety +1

      Sorry I missed your question. The Sony A6000 is excellent, but the 16-50mm is pretty mediocre. With a good lens, it's very good; and pretty small. The GX7 is good, and the standard lens is fairly good. It does use a smaller sensor, but it has IBIS. Trade-offs. The LX100 has the best standard lens, but obviously no options. But if you want a camera and just one lens, it's a good option. If you want a system, the A6000 and the GX7 are great starting points. The GX7 is probably a better budget choice, the Sony lens are a bit pricier. No bad choices in your selections.

    Hi Jeff, first off, thanks for the informative video.
    I'm indecisive between the GX85, the LX100 and the A6000. I'm looking for a compact camera i can easily carry around everywhere but one that also doesn't feel small on the hand, has enough controls for manual shooting and one that does good photo and video. I'm leaning towards the A6000 because of its APS-C sensor, being better in low light but really like the idea of the 5 axis stabilisation of the GX85, and the 4k video. Whats your opinion?

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 7 lety +1

      Well, if you have the time to wait and a little bit more cash, wait for the new Sony A6500 to be released on November 30 or so. It has most of the advantages of the A6000 (except the A6000 is smaller) and it will include the new 5-axis IBIS!!
      Here again, you really need to see how each camera fits in your hand. I like the size of the GX85; the A6000 feels a bit smaller, and the LX100 is the smallest. (P.S., I don't recommend the LX200 yet).
      The GX85 picks up a bit of resolution in the BSI sensor to make it roughly the equivalent of the A6000. Remember the A6000 is a much older design and Panasonic has upped their game with every new camera intro. As I also expect better image performance from the new Sony A6500.
      So, go feel them in the store and then select the one for you!

      Jeff Kahn thanks for the advice Jeff! I've held the a6000 and didn't like the feel, it felt small and cheap in a way (and lack of manual controls) now it just leaves the gx85 to test out live.

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Katie. No, I will not buy an XT20. If you are comparing the XT10 to the XT20, I would recommend the XT20 by virtue of the 24mp vs 16.3mp sensor, and one stop higher ISO due to the newer processor. It has several other minor advantages that more than justify the $100 price increase.
      I will not switch from my Sony A6500 unless Fuji implements IBIS. Despite the superb Fuji lenses and better controls, I prefer IBIS.
      But if you don't need IBIS, the Fujifilm is a fun and pro-caliber camera in good hands.

      @jkahnfilms  Před 8 lety

      Hi Jose, I wish I could do that meaningfully! Unfortunately, the resolution of the monitors we watch the images on is so inferior that the comparison would be lost. Also, the color balance of monitors is highly variable unless it is precisely and frequently calibrated and adjusted. I try to include photos when I think they make a point, but in a side by side comparison, the monitor just doesn't show any real difference between a crummy photo and a pretty good one. Video is a little easier, but my focus is on still; with a little video capability.
      BTW, I use Lumix GH series for my video. One is a GH4, one is a GH3, and the other is an old GH1(until the last couple). Can you see any difference? The image quality looks pretty similar to me in spite of all of the upgrades.

    I'm thinking about getting this GX85 in exchange of my A7. Beside the size, the Sony lenses are very very expensive and i can't afford them. However the A7 is a Full Frame 24mp sensor compared to the µ4/3 16mp. Do you think it is worth it ?

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 7 lety

      First off, I really like the A7. It's fantastic, especially the mkII with IBIS. However, I know where you are coming from. Those Zeiss and G lenses are expensive. I have been traveling a lot recently and when I fly, it's with my Lumix GX8 and GX85. They're small, light, and if they get stolen, I'm out about a third the money.
      That said, it really depends where, when and why you are shooting. If you want landscapes for print, I'd take the A7. For general purpose with occasional prints at 8x12 or less, the Lumix is excellent for the job.

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 8 lety

      That is a difficult choice. The good news: BOTH are winners and you will be happy with either!
      Lenses for the Lumix are a little cheaper and smaller, unless you opt for the super-high quality Leica co-branded lenses, and the Lumix GX85 has in-body image stabilization. The body isn't small but the package with lenses is.
      The Sony A6000 is small and convenient, especially for an APS-C camera. The lenses are good and reasonably priced; the Zeiss co-branded Sony lenses are expensive but excellent.
      Lots of choices of lenses for both cameras these days.
      That said, if price is a factor, I would recommend the Lumix for it's value and portability. It is so easy to take on a trip, and it does a terrific job on video too. If price isn't that important, the Sony A6000 with the Zeiss 16-70mm lens is a great option; that is how I use mine. Then fill-in with other lenses as needed.

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 8 lety

      It all depends or how you use it and how important small size is. If you want really compact and fast, the 35mm is a good choice. If you want versatility, the zooms are both good, while the 16-50 is a bit smaller; the 18-55mm a bit sharper. All have their advantages. If you intend to build a kit, all three are good starting points to build upon.

      Fujifilm lenses are all very good, but the 18-55mm is one of those special values. The 16-50mm is more compact, but if image quality is your primary goal, the 18-55mm is better.

BTW, the kit lenses are very reasonable and are a great buy. (Kit lenses are the ones packaged together with the body) The zoom lenses are a little slower (higher f-stop at maxim aperture) but are generally very well suited in a little sunlight or bright lights. If it is inside or dark outside, you will need to bump up the ISO to 800 or 1600 to get your best exposure.

      Jeff Kahn Fuji uses the Bayer sensor and has better in body processing from what I gathered in my research. m43s seem to have noise, poor low light capabilities and a lot of smoothing in higher ISO, which results in some images looking like oil paintings. I could be wrong, but have been researching and trying out, just about every camera system, for one worth investing in.

    • @jkahnfilms
      @jkahnfilms  Před 7 lety

      Fuji uses an X-trans sensor without an AA filter which preserves fine detail better, especially in RAW images. They also have some with he Bayer array. However, for jpegs, the biggest factor is the algorithm they use to process their images. Fuji has been known for years for having bright and snappy jpegs. Pany tends to process their jpegs a bit flatter and more realistic, but the clarity between the two depends as much upon the image processing as the sensor in jpeg mode. For ultimate quality, most of us would select mage RAW.
      The same generation aps-c would have a theoretical advantage over the smaller MFT, but Pany and Sony tend to stay a step or two ahead of most of the industry with their frequent camera model introductions. The BSI and sandwiched sensors are skewing our tradional knowledge about sensor performance. I must admit I am quite pleased with my MFT for most of the work I do. But I am not a pixel-peeper, I compare my work for market conditions. So it depend on how high resolution you need for your results.
      I hope that helps.
      The Fuji is unquestionably a fine camera with superior optics for super quality work. The LUMIX trades size for practicality, and compensates with some pretty good image processing.
      BTW, I compared a same gen X-trans to a Bayer (both Fuji) and the difference was imperceptible with my computer. Both are very good.

I cannot recommend a camera that does not have an established track record and a demonstrated ability to support the customers.
      Second, it appears to be a very sophisticated point and shoot. I prefer with manual control, a viewfinder and a myriad of lenses to capture the diversity of environments that I encounter.
