  • In the last video I did a full review on the stills capabilities of the Panasonic GX85. This video is dedicated to exploring the 4K footage and see how it compares to other similar cameras.
    I've compared it to the Sony a6300 as well as the Sony RX100 Mk IV. How does it look? You be the judge.

    I seriously hated the way the Sony rendered the skin tones. It made you look almost dead and blue while the Panasonic had a much more natural color.

    Thanks for the review. I own the A6300 and the GX85. On a recent vacation I choose to take the GX85 over the Sony, due to over heating. I shot 4k video all day with the GX85 and did not have any over heating issues. I wish I could say the same for the A6300. The GX85 also has a great lens selection and 5 axis in body stabilization that works well. As you said the camera is sorely missing a mic input jack and the built in microphones need some improvement. But even with the mic issue, the GX85 really meets my needs. It is my first MFT camera and I really enjoy using it. I would not compare it against cameras that are not in the same class or a higher price points.

    If I might be a little bold and suggest you can disable the constant AF. Also I wonder whether switching simply to 1080 resolution might actually produce a better image for the interior talk-to-camera? For a start I think the closer cropped 4k focus would go away and the effective focus length would go back to wider angle but perhaps I'm wrong.

  • @loft4me

    The comparison to the a6300 and the primary usage for the GX85 for vlogging, where external mic, articulating screen, skin tone rendering, and unwavering focus, brings out the negative points about the GX85, those points are appreciated. For myself, where landscape and street photography are the primary use, the attributes of handling and small form factor yield results that are more than satisfactory. Focusing issues are negated in some circumstances by the use of the AF Hold button, while low light stills, although requiring a tripod for best results using long exposure, is an acceptable inconvenience. Lastly, the current price, and the price I paid for the body, kit lens, and accessories, is $599 - down $200. I think the argument for the GX85 still holds, and maybe even more so, now.

    Hey Ted, I really like your vids. I own gx80 (UK) This cam is excellent and at under£500 it really shakes things up. Don't rate dynamic range at all but it is workable, mics are dreadful but are superb in noisy situations. I film lots of club nights and it never distorts! I have Zoom for interviews. We grew up with massive investments in video and this is £500... The stabilisation is amazing, as is no anti alias filter, it's compact form factor makes it ideal run and gun. I don't like a few things on it, but really... £500 is no money film makers rejoice! When was last time you watched a movie and knew what cam they used? There maybe better options but you'll need to double your money, this really is okay and if you got your mitts on it 3 Years ago you would be a Don! A wealthy Don... 4K, MFT, 5 Axis and tiny! Awesome cam full stop! Do you need more? Yes, the GH5 is amazing but who on youtube will notice? Make your money first, this will do till then:)

    You hit this review spot on! All the info I needed was given by you. My needs are as follows:
    I am a film maker/secondary photographer. My primary setup is a Sony AX100 that I send out clean 4K HDMI to Atomos Shogun 4K HDR.
    I was looking at this for secondary/pickup shots. You are right. Too many trade offs.
    I honestly think the Panasonic FZ300 actually checks all my needs far better than this camera and for less. Except one. I want the option to clean 4K HDMI out. That is the one trade off. Where this camera actually has more than one! You absolutely are right. There always seems to be a trade off of some kind in this camera class. If the FZ300 had had clean 4K out, it would have been a small filmmaker killer! Of course low light is always a problem on these cheaper cameras. But you can work around that to some degree. By lighting your spaces, fudging your camera settings some. But man, why can’t these camera makers get us the perfect solutions in one unit! BTW, I just subbed!
    When are they gonna give us a clean 4K out without heat issues? For sub $1K?

    It's frustrating how camera companies are only putting all their best tech in the bigger bodies.. it's understandable from a business standpoint, but still frustrating for us consumers. I really really want a smaller size camera to combine all the things I want: high quality EVF, IBIS, good quality 4K, reliable continuous auto-focus, LOG profiles, mic/headphone jack, touchscreen, no overheating, minimal rolling shutter... The GH5 is probably going to combine most of these things but I wish they would put all this tech in a smaller rangefinder style body like the GX8. So please Sony and Panasonic, give us these things in the A6300 and GX8 successor!

    • @tvurk
      @tvurk Před 8 lety

      The Dead Immortal I'm willing to pay a premium price for a camera as I described. I'm not asking them to give me all those features for the price of a GX85. I'll gladly pay around 2000 for a small camera that can give me all I want. There's still room above that price for them to sell camera's with full frame or medium format sensors.

    • @simianinc
      @simianinc Před 8 lety +1

      Here's your answer: "but I wish they would put all this tech in a smaller rangefinder style body like the GX8". They can't fit everything into a smaller body. Things like microphone and headphone jacks, and their associated wiring - take up room. Most of what you've asked for is on the GX8 - save LOG profiles and a headphone jack. Autofocus is nice, but I assume that since you're on a photography site, you can focus manually - even remotely using the Panasonic smartphone app touch-to-focus.

    • @tvurk
      @tvurk Před 8 lety

      simianinc I'm pretty sure Panasonic is able to fit in a headphone jack on a GX8 style body. Add to that LOG profiles, IBIS & shutter from the GX85, better continuous auto-focus with phase detection on the sensor (like A6300) and. I'll be a happy camper. I don't want to fiddle around with manual focus or an app on my phone. I want to shoot videos where I can just trust the continuous auto-focus to work properly and select my focus points with the touchscreen.

    • @zguy95135
      @zguy95135 Před 8 lety +1

      Log profiles are not worth the effort IMO. I have seen so many comparisons between color corrected log video from Sony and GH4's and guess what, after color correction they look identical to the GX85 (the Sony's actually looks worse). I've done some grading with the Panasonic files and they actually hold up quite well.Now if you're actually shooting something serious enough to do real hard grading where you are really pushing the files then either you have the wrong camera for the job or get a 4K external recorder.

    • @tvurk
      @tvurk Před 8 lety +1

      ***** I disagree, Sony's SLOG2 and Cine gamma's are very useful, just like V-Log on the GH4. With the GX85 the dynamic range in standard picture profiles is very limited, a log profile would help protect highlights from getting so easily blown out.

    You might want to try the GX8. It doesn't have a 30 min recording limit (it does break up the files into separate 4gb sections though), doesn't overheat in my experience, has a flat profile, great battery life, has mic input (though it's a 2.5mm port so it'll need an adapter), slightly cheaper than GH4 and an articulating screen. Also unlike the a6300 I have, it's not picky about the memory card. I'd be happy to let you borrow it for a few weeks for a review if you'd like.

  • @rodderz57
    @rodderz57 Před 5 lety +2

    Don't really see most of the image issues you outline with the GX80. It sounds like your expectations were a little unrealistic. The second indoor image is absolutely fine to me. A crop sensor is never going to give the low light performance of a larger sensor camera like the Sony. The GH5 is excellent in low light but it's in a different league. Remember the price-point for this camera, it's a consumer-orientated, affordable compact. You also need to set the GX80 to it's lowest contrast setting before making the dynamic range comparison. Again it's never going to hold up to a Sony with it's larger sensor and you have to accept the compromise of using an M43 camera.

  • @loft4me
    @loft4me Před 5 lety

    Indeed, most cameras are a trade off and a compromise, and in the case of vlogging, which is your preferred reason you were "excited" over this camera, the let down in focusing, skin tone rendering, and lack of microphone jack would put this choice at a disadvantage. But following your referral to Chris's channel, and seeing the GX85 in the outdoors on a gimbal, perhaps shows where the camera can shine. With the dual stabilization and small form factor, this camera can also see be seen as a weapon of choice for the street photographer.

    1. The color in your room shot looked much better on the GX85 than the Sony. You conclusion is baffling.2. Why are you using autofocus? You are hardly moving front to back, the dof is relatively wide, so just lock the focus (AF lock button). In nothing you shot would autofocus be the appropriate technique. Autofocus is helpful in getting focus, then it should be locked for almost any shot on any video camera.3. I did a test comparing the RX100 IV and the GX85 at ISO 6400. I saw little difference. In yours, the color of the Sony is all washed out.4. Your outdoor shots were overexposed - the camera does this, so you have to ride the ev a lot.5. The RX100 IV has slightly better resolution in 4K. I see little difference in DR, however, and the RX100 IV colors in Standard are too blue, and generally unappealing. This is well known. Slog 2 is a joke - way too noisy, and 8-bit for lots of color grading just results in banding. It is worthless in this camera. HFR modes are great.6. On non-stabilized wide-angle lens, the IBIS really shines. Using unstabilized (no OIS) primes handheld at 50mm (35mm equivalent) or less is what this camera is about.I liked your discussion, if not all you conclusions.

      Sony autofocus is much better and I agreed with a lot of his points such as the lack of profiles, mic jack, etc. But I thought he looked much better, healthier in gx85. He looked more hydrated with better glow - for lack of a better description. He looked desaturated and more grayish/cold in the Sony. Sony exposure and colors totally aged him and made him look more anemic in comparison.

    • @Platy80
      @Platy80 Před 8 lety

      The colors of Sony-Cams also appear unnatural to me. However, I had the same problem with my Panasonic, when I switched from Canon. I think, this is not a question of right or wrong, it depends mainly on what type of image-pressing and color-style you are used to.
      The GX85 is - without any doubt - one of the best mirrorless cameras within it's price range. However, it's not meant to be a serious video tool. People who need a MFT-camera for 4k-videoproduction, should wait for a GH5 or the G8.

    • @markr041
      @markr041 Před 8 lety +2

      I do not understand the "serious video tool" point. No "serious" videographer uses camera audio, so the mic-in issue is moot. Otherwise, the GX85 has a better sensor and processor than the GH4, which is considered a "serious video tool" and IBIS, allowing handheld video with a variety of primes. The quality of the video produced by the camera will be no better on the G8 unless there is a leap up to UHD 60p. Or are you referring to the lack of V-log and the really useless Cine-D and Cine-V. What is unserious?

    • @markr041
      @markr041 Před 8 lety

      This just shows the silliness of labeling things "professional" (or better, "perfectly professional") or "serious." Sorry, my standards for professional and serious in audio is to never use the cheap internal mic preamp for audio (XLR connections do not make you serious, though they look serious). Never. There is no camera with mic preamps that meet my standards as a professional audio engineer. So there. You are not perfectly professional and I am. :) Yes, Cine D/V is useless. No amount of grading gets you good skin tones. I have a GH4. You sound like someone who has never actually used these profiles. I agree that crushing all settings to -5 is bad practice. I know "professionals" who do that, however. And they are dead serious. Log profiles and 8-bit video is generally a bad idea too (yes, I have used Slog 2 on Sony's). If you are really "serious" you use the 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI out from the GH4 into an external recorder, using ProRes 422. Or you shoot RAW (I have done that too (BMPCC)).That's serious. But this categorization is all pretentious claptrap. What matters is the video results. And what's the opposite of "serious" anyway - a joker? Anyone who does handheld video without a gimbal is a clown? Or uses camera mics? Or edits highly-compressed 8-bit video? Or posts here?

    Great video! From what I remember, there was a fair bit of backlash when GX8 came out and it was quite a bit bigger than the GX7. The GX7 was a wonderfully balanced package - such a joy to use. I myself had been waiting for the GX8 for 4K video specifically, and I too decided against buying it because of the size. I bought the GX7 for its combination of size and features, and I expected the replacement to be a similar size and layout. The other problem with the GX8 was the shutter shock issue, which at the time was unresolved (I don't know if it is now?).
    From what I remember, the GX85 was Panasonic's (hasty) response to that backlash, and the lower specs is obviously to differentiate it from the GX8. I use the GX8 now mostly for travel photography, along with the Sony RX100-V, but I actually carry the GX7 for photography, since it has more hard controls and is easier to work with.

    Still, has to be said, by the standards of 2-3 years ago, the quality we're getting from these cameras is pretty incredible! Just wait another 2-3 years and I can't imagine any of these drawbacks will still be an issue.

    as noted with other comments, contrary to your statement that the sony does better recording you in your house living room, actually the gx85 seems to do much better. Your skin tone is better, the shadowing on your face actually looks better closer to film like. Whereas the sony made your skin look pasty and shiny. Don't know which color is more real, but your shirt color is more aqua with the gx85 and more washed out blue with the sony. Perhaps the sony is more realistic and the gx85 is processing more, but it almost does the job for you so that you don't need have foundation make up, and post processing.

    Nice review Ted. I would personally avoid it for the same reasons, the limited dynamic range and bad focusing.
    I'm extremely happy with my RX100 mk IV. With it being a pocket sized camera, the S-log 2 and ability to shoot 250fps at close to 1080P, it's perfect for the run and gun style music video work I do for mostly hip hop artists.
    Personally, I don't see smaller sensor sizes as being an issue at all, except in some low light situations. If you look at The Walking Dead, it is shot on 16mm film (excluding fx shots), and they're still able to tell the story just as well without relying on more extreme shallow depth of field style shots. With that 16mm film size not being far off the size of a 1" sensor.

    Im been testing a lot, lately with a super takumar 50mm 1.4 and i can tell you that using only in body IS it works like a charm!
    The only thing for now that is really dissapointing is the AF with the kit lens with the constant focus hunting even with good light and the low dinamic range.
    I used to have a specific configuration with the "style" on the A5000 changing contrast, sharpness, etc, to get the most flat profile possible. Any idea with this camera?
    Great review! Confirming all that i've tested.

    Great review. my goodness this was detailed.
    I watched your friend Chris' video and I have to say it makes the auto focus on the gx85 look terrible. (I started a discussion on this over at dpreview.) it seems the consensus is that continuous autofocus is weak and doesn't lock onto the right thing , i.e. the background will be in focus when you're trying to do a handheld selfie shot. touch to focus and half-press shutter button may be better though, especially if employed before you start recording. any further thoughts on this? did it seem like her video missed focus alot to you?

    Ted, did you have the 12-32 lens on still? i wonder what the impact of a Panasonic 12-35 2.8 or a 25mm prime would have been on the sharpness and focus in the office video (as it was tripod shot 5 axis stabilisation wouldnt have been an issue) - the RX100 IV being a fixed lens has to put its 'best' glass on - it's all or nothing after all. Generally kit lenses as we all know (and the 12-32 isn't the worst kit lens) are not the sharpest tools in the box.
    I also noticed that the focus grabbed onto your hand as you moved it forward not something I've normally noticed on face detection on Panasonic.
    Thanks for two more excellent videos BTW.
    Simon, Northampton, UK (it's about as hot here today as your park shots!)

  • @simianinc
    @simianinc Před 8 lety +1

    If you want audio input (but weirdly, a 2.5mm jack), a full tilt screen and a better dynamic range go for the GX8. It has the most advanced m43 sensor, is 20MPx, but alas it came out before Panasonic IBIS worked with video, so IBIS is stills only. But I love the DR relative to, say the GH4 and presumably the GX85 which uses the older sensor.
    I think the tilt screen on the GX85 is for those of us who didn't like the fact that Panasonic switched to an articulated screen for the GX8 (which until the GX85, was seens as the successor to the GX7). Trying to touch focus candid street photography on a screen that's articulated is a real pain, and not very discreet. If you've connected a cable release for, say, using a remote for landscape photography, the articulated screen gets in the way, and a tilt screen is better.

    Sony a6300 has to capture a 6k video from a bigger sensor and then downsample it to 4k. Panasonic uses a smaller and less megapixel sensor. Probably that explains the overheating.

    Useful, informative video. Like some others, I did prefer the look and colour from the GX85 over the Sony(which looked blueish and 'over sharpened'). Omitting the mic input is an unfortunate design omission, as including one would not have taken away from sales of other, higher priced Lumix cameras - they're bigger and heavier.
    Overall, I think the GX80/85 is a fine 'compact' camera, very Leica M influenced, and maybe that is a clue to which company (who partner Panasonic) may have been considering selling in a rebadged model?

    The only problem with low-light video with GX85 as far as I can see is the autofocus hunting. The skin tones and colours in general are just a tad warmer than the Sony's and to be honest look way more natural, Sony's look too damn cold. Also, I think you're being a little bit biased towards the Sony for some reason, because it's dynamic range at least in the aforementioned context is certainly worse than the Lumix's. Take a look at those lights to the right - they're looking blown out from the Sony, but retained from the Lumix.

    Had a feeling the Gx85 would be a let down for use as a vlogging video camera. I think the higher end GX8 model would be better all around, has full articulating screen, better view finder, has audio jack, and Cinelike V and D profiles. Cost is higher, and you will also want an OIS lens for stabilized 4k video.

    Hi Ted! Thanks for making all these great camera review videos. Thought it was hilarious in the stills video for this camera when you mentioned you were in fort worth - I am too! Crazy. Anyways, I am wondering if you have an opinion on the Canon Rebel T6i against this camera for videography. I am looking to shoot music-video / cinematic style videos of myself playing the drums in several different environments and lighting conditions, including places like abandoned warehouses, out in forested parks, and even at home in my garage. I plan to have my cameraman utilize a flexible tripod to assist with stabilization but it is still important to myself and my cameraman to have a stable image. What do you think would be the best option? If not either of those, our budget is preferably $850 and lower for the camera and a lense. Please suggest what you think the absolute best option would be. That'd be awesome! (All opinions welcome) Thanks Ted and anyone else in advance!

I can see a difference and the Pana' looks better to me. The skin tones definitely look better, more natural on the Pana' to me. I'm looking at shadow detail, highlight detail, etc. I can't see anything better about the Sony at all? The Lumix has a much better color pallete than Sony. Also the Sony is an aps-c sensor so it should be better in low light. Lets compare my Nikon Z6 to the Sony a6300. It would blow it out of the water. My point is not really an even comparison in my humble opinion. Use the micro 4/3 in its wheelhouse. I think it looks great recording. Again, IMHO. I've also seen some pretty phenomenal images from Micro 4/3 as well as video. What glass are you using? If its kit then there is your answer. Put some Pro glass on it and you'll see a big difference. That said I use my Nikon Z6 when I do video but I own the GX85 also and its a solid micro 4/3 camera overall for what it is.

    I'm not a panasonic fan. But that footage in the studio looked like a movie. It was a little shadowy but you could throw Joe Pesci in there with a monologue and nobody would question it. The AF occasionally hunting the light in the background is common in many of these combo cameras. It was noticeable but not jarring like the fuji can be.
    That Sony looked aweful though. You aged 30 years. Then got buried and dug up again. That was a horror show of skin colors. I've also seen sony turn people bright yellow. Sony autofocus is incredible, but IDK what to do with a camera that makes me choose between being a simsons character or a corpse.
