Upping Your Photography Game with Platinum Palladium Printing
To get a platinum/palladium image printed at 20% off, visit www.hiddenlightllc.com/aop (offer expires September 2, 2024)
Platinum/Palladium is an alternative printing process developed in the late 1800's. Still used today it is considered one of the more durable art processes for photographic printing. It is a monochrome process, where the emulsion is painted on to a paper surface and exposed to UV light. Prints can be developed without having to use a "dark room".

Your video was like an ‘ah ha’ moment if that makes sense. I like what you said, focus on one focal length and get good at it. I listen to a lot of younger CZcamsrs and most of the time they are all over the place and give no direction. Your video is so different than everything else I’ve heard and you’ve inspired me to just stick to my one focal length which is 50mm. I love the focal length and every time I watch CZcamsrs, they rave about 35mm, which I like too but I think I prefer the 50mm . But thank you for the inspiration! Your photos are beautiful

In 1972 when I was a twenty-year old college drop-out I got a job assisting Master Photographer Monte Zucker who at the time was one of top wedding photographers/teacher/author. I got the job by cutting apart my portfolio of matted Zone System prints the evening after he had critiqued them during my job interview. He had use a pair of L shaped crop guides to isolate the focal point in each of my photos then expanded the frame outwards which made contrasting distractions I hadn’t noticed obvious. After I called him and told him what I’d done and why he had me come back to see the ‘revised’ portfolio and offered me job at $50 per week to start - saying it was because I had a wife with a job who could support me - how things were back then. I didn’t hesitate and accepted. Thanks to his mentoring became very skilled very quickly, learning by imitation how to deal with his millionaire clients to get good photos. I learned it was simple: approach with smile, explain you are making a photo that will be in the wedding album and that I wanted to make them look their best in it - which required posing them to the camera and getting them to button jackets or straighten collar or tie. At first I was very intimidated doing that until the first time one the men I photographed complemented me on my attention to detail and professionalism. That was a very important life lesson I never forgot. What had attracted me to photojournalism at college was being by nature an introverted observer rather than someone who wanted to be in the middle of the action and for that reason I found shooting weddings very draining and quite boring because back in the days of film the standard wedding album was 50 photos and for that reason the list of shots taken to tell the story was tightly scripted. I also realized the real secret to Monte’s success was he was an amazing salesman using clever techniques to manipulate the customers. For example he did not show proofs as was the normal practice or even have prints make when the negatives were developed. He had the 220 negatives returned uncut and using a retouching stand would review and retouch the ones for printing. For a 50 photo album we would typically shoot six 20 shot rolls and from those 120 photos he would select 80 for printing. He had gone to the lab which made his prints and trained the darkroom tech how to dodge burn them. The lab returned untrimmed 10x10 inch prints sprayed with matte lacquer ready to leather bound in the album. Monte would then ‘stack the desk’ so the ‘must have’ photos would be the last ones viewed. We would go to the client’s home where the couple and the parents would gather around as he revealed each photo one at a time. When approaching the 50 photo contract point he’d start saying things like “maybe you don’t needed this one” knowing full well the bride’s favorite aunt was in the photo. It was rare that a client didn’t buy all 80 photos. The he would say, “Now let’s go through them again and pick the ones for the parent’s album…” What started as a $750 contract wound up as a $1,500 -$2,000 final invoice. If the customer complained he would smile and remind them, “Well I suggested you might not need all of them, remember?” That upselling strategy worked because of the way he structured it, only showing the finished prints, displaying them one at a time not passing them around, and suggesting they not pick some knowing they would. It was something that was amazing to watch but not something I wanted to do making me realize I’d never be as successful as a solo ‘retail’ photographer. Fortunately I didn’t have to because the opportunity to work at National Geographic in the photo lab crossed my path which led me into teaching reproduction photography (halftones / color separation) at a college, a job as production manager at a high-quality magazine printer and a 29 year career in the Foreign Service which included 11 years in Manila running a USIA publishing center which produced and shipped magazines and books everywhere in the world there is a US Embassy in 15 different languages. None if that would have happened had I not been willing to go to work for $50 per week with a Master Photographer like the one you interviewed here. Now comfortably retired I shoot and share my photos on my dog’s CZcams channel 😊

You brought up your presets in this video, which are still my favorite Lightroom presets, and really the only ones that I use with any regularity. I just wanted to suggest that you create a package of color grading presets. I recently came across Mark Dumbleton's Lightroom presets, and he has a free black and white Lightroom preset package, which includes seven color grading presets. He intended the presets to be used to shape the black and white image, but I have been really happy with the subtle changes they make to my Nikon D850 color images. The changes are very subtle (which is a rarity with Lightroom presets), and they don't make the image look at all unrealistic (which, again, to me, is a positive thing, and a welcome reprieve), but they can completely transform the mood of the image (and help it to pop). Less important, but something I took note of, they almost have the ability to make Nikon images look like Sony images, etc. Color grading is a very important step in the photo editing process, and having a preset package of maybe 12-20 subtle, but effective color grading Lightroom presets that are put together by an academically minded photographer such as yourself would help photographers who are comfortable making exposure adjustments, but less comfortable with color grading their shadows, midtones, and highlights, etc. Best wishes.
