    The Panasonic Lumix S 100mm f/2.8 Macro is a short telephoto portrait lens with 1:1 macro capabilities. The crazy thing about this lens is its less than 4 inches long and weighs less than 300g. Using internal focusing with two focus groups and a newly redesigned motor, this lens features outstanding performance as both a portrait telephoto or a macro lens. This is probably the best lens Lumix has designed in their S series of prime lenses. It's a must own for the system.

    I’ve been really happy with the S5II over the last few months and the S Series lenses on top of it make such a great value setup. Love to see this macro being added to the lineup. I’ve been using the Sigma 70mm DG Macro in L-Mount for all of my film scanning/digitizing. The breathing on that lens calls for constant back and forth adjustments. Might have to pick this one up in the future. Hope you’re well, Ted!

    This is literally the first time I've seen a lens for a modern FF mirrorless system that makes me want to switch. Or at least consider this to be a choice somewhere in the future. Not one of the monsters that seem to be all the rage for some years by now. Especially intriguing is the manual focussing as described here - that's an issue I often have (not with those Olympus lenses with "manual focus clutch" - they work very similarly to "real" manual focus).

    I bought this lens a month ago after using the Sigma 105mm f2.8 for the last couple of years. It was a good move. Both lenses are excellent optically and the Sigma is really solidly built, but the weight and size of this lens really make a difference in the tight situations often encountered in macro photography. I'm old with a bad back so the Panasonic is way easier to carry and use all day.

    A great lens in so many ways. I especially like the ability to customize the focussing angle. Should be kind of standard with all focus by wire lenses. For a macro lens, it is so important that it doesn't change its length as this also changes your reproduction ratio. Always drives me mad when using macro lenses which do extend.
    As for macro lenses, did you ever try the OMDS 90/3.5? It is just amazing. With the 2x converter you get a recorded size of about 4x3mm.

  • @jeffriart
    @jeffriart Před 5 měsíci +1

    This is a killer lens for L-mount. Half the size and weight of Sigma's 105mm f2.8, with better auto focus and less focus breathing. Sharpness seems to be comparable from the sample pictures. I actually just got the Sigma's and have been enjoying it, but handling that lens wasn't easy, as it's pretty heavy and the auto focus is a bit frustating to use, and as you said, the recomposition caused by the breathing.
    I'm pretty much sold on this lens and will replace my Sigma once this is released.

  • @bubuli
    @bubuli Před 5 měsíci +2

    there is no downside at all? relatively inexpensive, small, sharp, fast, true linear MF, internal focus, little-to-no focus breathing and rainbows? in as much as i want to believe that this is a true miracle of engineering, there has to be some compromises here...i mean there's 3 aspherical elements so i imagine onion-ring bokeh galore...but that's hardly a deal-breaker for many.

    • @photovideomusic
      @photovideomusic Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@HwL01 Zooming does. Heavy focus breathing amounts to zoom. Either way, get a Tamron 90mm and attach to a camera, open it wide to f2.8, and see the camera's system tell you that it's f2.8. Then focus on something closer than about 80cm away, and you'll see the camera force it down to f3.2 and not be able to go faster. Focus on something closer again, and it'll go all the way to f3.5.

    Hey Ted, as an avid macro photographer, have you ever gotten your hands on a Laowa macro lens? They make the absolute best macro lenses across all brands (if you are okay with manual controls and AF isn't a big need) and despite this, they are still flying under the radar a bit. Their build quality and optical quality top the macro lenses from every OEM offerings especially when you factor in the 2x magnification abilities of their lenses. The only macro lens that is sharper than a Laowa would be the Sony 90mm G master but that lens is also stupid expensive, large and heavy so the very slight difference isn't too big of a factor imo.

      It is a valid question. To my knowledge I don't think there is a lens over 85mm with an aperture higher than 2.8. Not sure anyone camera company has cracked that code. This lens being this small is an industry 1st. (I think) @@CarlosAlvaradoPhotography

    • @jacobh5817
      @jacobh5817 Před 5 měsíci +2

      It’s simple physics. Aperture is the ratio between focal lenght and widest opening of the lens. The longer the focal length the wider the opening needs to be to reach f1.8. So for a 100mm lens it needs to have a widest opening double the size of a 50mm lens. What they did with the 85mm was already an achievement, but with the extra focus groups and the double focus motors in the 100mm, there was no room left to go to f1.8. Unless they seriously widened the lens body, which they obviously didn’t want to do.

    Take the Canon EF 100mm 2.8. it is cheaper and probably better. You’re welcome

    Is it weather & dust sealed? Is the lens body constructed of metal? Is there flare resistant coating? Chromatic aberrations? The tech seems impressive, but $1,000 for a lens that seems to be made of plastic feels off to me. Also, seems to be mis-directed priority trying match body sizes to other lenses instead of pushing for a faster aperture like some other manufactures are starting to do now.

      I have a few of these Lumix S 1.8 lenses and I’m using them on an SL2 and an SL2-S. All of them are very well made, fully weather-sealed and made out of Thermal Stable Composite (just like the Nikkor Z S-line lenses). They obviously don’t reach the level of the APO-Summicron-SL or the Summilux-SL lenses (which I use in the studio), but they cost about a fifth of the price and weigh half to a third of these. The 50 and 85 are excellent. The 35 and the 18 are very good, but the 24 is a bit soft.

    Idk, if I’m going to get a 100mm prime, I’m going to reach for a 135mm F1.8 for the total blowout of background.
    The 1:1 is cool though and do appreciate it’s small size. But that small size is why it’s a 2.8 and that’s zoom territory.

    So basically this lens zooms out while focusing closer and you have a 50mm lens at 1:1
