    • @Josh-tt6zg
      @Josh-tt6zg Před 5 lety +9

      @@LogPo4 How does that even compare? Football is entirely different. IF you wanted to use that analogy you'd have to talk about how Jerry Rice caught x amount of passes compared to others who have attained a 1000 yard season.
      For example, it's not that impressive if you catch 1000 catches for 1000 yards. But if you catch 20 passes for 1000, that's damn impressive.
      What I'm saying is the amount of 3 pointers he made is not that impressive because ultimately he took more shots. His average percentage of making the shot was relatively the same as the year before. Obviously anyone who has taken a math course can tell you that if you take more shots, you're going to overall make more baskets. Again, that's not impressive. That just means either you're a ball hog and not a team player, or that you are only there so people can feed you the ball. Neither of which is impressive. What would be impressive would be the rise in the percentage of shots made, but again, that didn't happen to the extent that it would be impressive compared to the year previous.
      Now also, the graph is at fault. The reason why, to any lay person, it looks impressive is because the y variable is the amount of shots taken. Of course once again, anyone who has taken a math course can tell you that ultimately the amount of shots taken doesn't matter at all, what does matter is percentage made. This data could be better represented by simple having a cutoff of let's say 200 shots taken, and then simply have the percentages made graphed out per year. Not only will this show how three point shooters have become more accurate over the years but it will get rid of the misleading large distance between years for Steph.

      @Hugh Mungus average three point attempt rate was climbing extremely slowly after around 2005. Sure it wouldve come to a point where all teams were averaging 10 made threes a game but that wouldve taken a very long while. The league needed a player like Curry to show that a high attempt rate leads to more wins and easy scoring.
      And you cant really compare curry to any other great three point shooter since curry was taking a lot more than they were, no one had the confidence to shoot at the rate he did, everyone thought it was a bad idea.
      The 05 and 06 suns collapsing before the finals did not help the league attempt more threes, the warriors dominating the league did.

Like it or not, he may have revolutionized the game, but still ended up in the wrong side of the table. The three is overrated

    I've never really thought about how strange the 3-pt line is. I mean, imagine if we had something like this in other sports. You hit a homerun, but if it's over 450ft it counts as TWO homeruns. Or let's say you kick a FG from past 50 yards, you get FOUR points instead of three. Or in soccer, if you score a goal from outside the 18 yard box it counts as TWO goals.
    It's really kind of bizarre and arbitrary.

      Honestly the best thing about soccer. You can score glorious long-range goals, flying headers, send three defenders to the donut shop with skill before scoring, but they all only count as one. The transcendent talent of the best players on the best teams can be cancelled out by a corner and a bunch of really big dudes ricocheting it in off someone's ass. Tough break, should have found a more effective way to score more goals. It makes many, many playstyles viable, there is no unified strategy.
      If goals from outside the penalty area counted as 2, that's all anyone would try to do. Teams who rely on counter-attacks down the flanks, teams who use set-pieces to create chances, and teams who play a slow, possession-based game all suffer. Every single one of those tactics has worked in the last 10 years.

    • @QuarkTwain
      @QuarkTwain Před rokem +17

      Baseball is a little like that. If you hit a home run that just barely makes it at 356 feet, it's a score. Hit it 354 feet and it's probably an out. If you mishit it badly and it only makes it halfway, well that might be a double depending on which direction it went. A line drive might get you on base, but if you had hit it one degree more to the left it would have been an easy out.
      Even worse, the ball is nearly impossible to control. Batters are lucky to even hit the ball much of the time, so aiming it is a crap shoot. Batting takes a lot of skill, but each at bat involves a huge amount of luck. This is why the best teams only win about 60% of the time, and the playoffs are so unpredictable. If they wanted the best teams to win each playoff series, they'd need to play several dozen games.

    • @Ty91681
      @Ty91681 Před rokem +5

      @@QuarkTwain there's plenty of hitters that can pick which direction they'd like to the ball based on their swing speed. Sure, not all can but certainly the best of best can and do. • @199523nick
      @199523nick Před 7 lety +5

      DR. SAVAGE wait, so you're saying that if there wasn't a 3 pt they would automatically lose nearly 20 more games? If what you are doing is taking their made 3s and making them 2s then that doesn't work because then you have to factor in their field goal percentages and most likely they wouldn't shoot from so far away if there was no need making their likelihood of making the shot go up. So say they were a 40% 3pt shooter but had a 80% FG that would technically mean if they were 2-4 from the 3pt changing that to 2pts would technically mean they would make an extra shot so they'd be 3-4. Another thing the Warriors aren't the team that leads the league in 3pt attempts they are actually 5th behind Houston, Cleveland, Boston, and Brooklyn in that order. And they are 3rd in % behind San Antonio and Cleveland tho they are tied on the season with Cleveland. But I made my point. And I agree with yours that the 3 is not boring nor does it make the game worse, I've always been a fan of basketball but rarely watched the regular season, but the past 2 years I watch every game that comes on tv (dependent on the teams) because generally I'm guaranteed some kind of excitement. (Especially with the recent game winners and game tying buzzer beaters)

I think the 3pt is something great because it makes it possible for guys like Curry, who are not all that physical, to become game changing factors. Not better, not worse, but it makes it more fun when it's not the same old huge-guy-pushes-towards-the-rim. Nothing against that, it's just that the contrast makes it all shine brighter. Watching LeBron James and Steph Curry at once in the same universe is great. I say it's a keeper.

    What would happen if the NBA started valuing baskets based upon distance to the net? We could make farther shots worth more than closer shots but not 1.5 times more, like how it currently is (3pts is 1.5*2pts), which is too much. We should do a little study to determine some equation that values baskets as a function of distance to the net in a fair way so that the expected value of any shot from basically anywhere on the court is the same.
    This way teams would be simply trying to take the most open shot from anywhere on the court, without having to worry about the drastic difference of value of a 3pt vs. 2pt shot.

  • @MrMaxila
    @MrMaxila Před 7 lety +1

    Whilst arbitrary I think the shape of the 3 point line is pretty clever - can't bank shots off the glass from the corners, so bringing the distance in a bit makes it fairer to let people have a go at 3s around the court. Amazing video man 😃

    • @travz21
      @travz21 Před 7 lety +12

      The game is more physical now than it's ever been. Jordan never got arm barred or hand checked as much as everyone says. There is much more of it today against shooters and point guards. Watch any good shooter run around screens and you'll see him get chucked and grabbed all game.

    • @travz21
      @travz21 Před 7 lety +7

      And to the original point, a center that can shoot 3s is probably the most valuable player in the league. It allows your offense to space out nicely and you also have the option to post up/kick out to the open man or just go up and dunk it. Centers will always be relevant. But the 3-pointer is the most valuable shot in basketball and centers have been slow to adapt until now.

    If you play basketball you will understand why the three point line is important; smaller players, who would easily be blocked around the basket, can compensate for their lack of height by having the skill to shoot at a longer range. These shots, being harder to hit, must be worth a greater amount of points in order to make up for their comparatively low accuracy. TLDR; the three point line makes size less of an advantage to players, and thus increases the overall level of skill displayed in professional (and recreational basketball). + they allow for tense, high risk, high reward game winners to be taken, which are gripping to watch.

    • @zanti4132
      @zanti4132 Před 4 lety

      That's correct. It's important to realize that a made three-point shot is worth 50% more points than a two-pointer, so those 33% and 34% success rates from the three-point line are equal to a 50% success rate from inside the arc. And, since the ONLY 50% spot is right under the basket, the three-pointer become the percentage play to maximize your score.
      Take away the three-pointer, and the defense just focuses on stopping the easy shots from close in. Basketball becomes less a shooter's game, more a big man's game. With the defense no longer forced to spread out, the game becomes less interesting (in my opinion, anyway).
