Here on the Oregon Coast we have a lot of moss in our lawn chocking out the grass. All I do is spread grass seed very heavy on the moss. I don't kill the moss. I let the grass do that job. If you had a spot or two that didn't grow, reseed heavy again & water.

Josh, I had several "dead spots" that I dealt with for years and was never happy with the success until I covered it with compost. I compost all of my own leaves, limbs, brush, trimmings, etc. in a massive pile, and don't need to go to the store. After the compost application, the surrounding grass "jumped" in the new area, without the application of any seed. The former dead spots are now some of the most promising parts of the land. It didn't cost me anything but a little labor.

been using my rabbits for bare clay spots. let them manure for a week, broadfork it in and then seed. takes a little longer but saves having to buy compost and straw.

Growing up we would put a little bit of Oats in with the grass seed to help it and then it's just keeping it mode once it comes up if you keep up mode down it will look like grass

Hi, Josh ! When I find a bare spot in my yard, I go to the local flea market and find something to put in that spot. It's fun to shop, and I can usually find something I need to fill the area. Keep up the great information. Sometimes it's even easier than sowing seeds and straw. Thanks. I'll keep watchin' . :)

Thanks, Josh! This is good information. I have a large spot to seed on our new 9-acre property where the builder did not put grass and it is at an angle so the ruts are pretty big. I will probably box blade it first then do your technique. We use Bermuda in North Texas for most of our yards. St. Augustine for the fancy yards! :P

Is it better to just leave the seed on top or sow it into the soil/compost? I tend to aggressively harrow, seed then run the harrow back over. Final is horse manure compost or hay covering. We have a hobby horse farm. Never a shortage of manure compost🐎🐎. Hay is always handy as well.

There’s a much easier way, look up germinating grass in a wheelbarrow. U germinate seed for 5 days in peat moss or sawdust after wetting and covering, uncover on day 5, lay long half grown seedin peat moss on bare spots, put straw on top and water, grows in 1 wk. your working way too hard.
