Josh, this video couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks and Blessings.
Glad it was helpful!
You can go to the waste treatment plants and get bio soil cheap and it grows plants so well it’ll amaze you
Thx Josh!!!! I needed this info
I do like the idea of justifying a new front loader for grass repair!
bhahhahah...yep time to get a tractor!
Here on the Oregon Coast we have a lot of moss in our lawn chocking out the grass. All I do is spread grass seed very heavy on the moss. I don't kill the moss. I let the grass do that job. If you had a spot or two that didn't grow, reseed heavy again & water.
Josh, I had several "dead spots" that I dealt with for years and was never happy with the success until I covered it with compost. I compost all of my own leaves, limbs, brush, trimmings, etc. in a massive pile, and don't need to go to the store. After the compost application, the surrounding grass "jumped" in the new area, without the application of any seed. The former dead spots are now some of the most promising parts of the land. It didn't cost me anything but a little labor.
Like to see it as it grows
Great video with great tips. Thanks Mr and Mrs Stoney Ridge for taking the time to film and share.
That yard of yours is already looking sweet, no bare spots will make it 100%.
been using my rabbits for bare clay spots. let them manure for a week, broadfork it in and then seed. takes a little longer but saves having to buy compost and straw.
Growing up we would put a little bit of Oats in with the grass seed to help it and then it's just keeping it mode once it comes up if you keep up mode down it will look like grass
Rain preparation and good soil go a long ways in having a nice yard
Up in the morning with the rising sun! Be blessed brother!
Hi, Josh ! When I find a bare spot in my yard, I go to the local flea market and find something to put in that spot. It's fun to shop, and I can usually find something I need to fill the area. Keep up the great information. Sometimes it's even easier than sowing seeds and straw. Thanks. I'll keep watchin' . :)
I buy the round bales of hay for my cows as if tear it apart seeds fall on the floor of the barn after a few bales i rake it up and scatter it on the bald spots and the grass grows any wastage hay from the cows i run over it with the ride on mixed with the manure and just spread it around it works a treat
Great video Josh, I'm glad you keep it simple for even some folks that don't have equipment like some of us. Keep up the good work and God bless you my brother
Thanks Josh this awesome information sharing. Be blessed brother.
I dId this with our football field last year and the results was amazing.
Dig up the soil first
Perfect, thanks Josh.
😆 I have two bare spots I was going to do tomorrow..
Have a great weekend 🌷🌷🌷
Nice work - Good tips!
Josh, years ago I worked with a guy from Arkansas at a home center, and his accent made manure sound more like "maneer." Someone said that sounded like the stuff the make counter tops with.
Appreciate it Josh. Actuality doing the exact same thing this weekend! Take care, Woooo
I have a Scotts seed spreader. It's the standard (I think that's actually it's name) one you see everywhere at all the big box stores. Even Scotts products do not reference it for settings.
that loader looks like it will save you a lot of time on small projects around the farm
I just did this a week or two ago. Wish I had watched this then for the added tips. 😉
Thanks, Josh! This is good information. I have a large spot to seed on our new 9-acre property where the builder did not put grass and it is at an angle so the ruts are pretty big. I will probably box blade it first then do your technique. We use Bermuda in North Texas for most of our yards. St. Augustine for the fancy yards! :P
Looking good
Would it be a little better to rake the grass seed into the compost, or sprinkle a layer of compost over the seed you just layed?
Josh, Thanks a lot for all your informatic videos. We have recently purchased 78 acres in Australia with no experience. Your videos helps us a lot. By the way, I just curious what is your pants you wearing always ?
these are Truewerk pants
Hey Josh 🇺🇲 great video WOOOOOO!
Skinny josh. You look good brother
Good stuff buddy
How are you and the wife doing bud I hope well and I haven't been on very much bud and got alot to catch up on .but we been having rough times around here the lady is on oxegen and massive COPD .emphazema and lung full of holes .she has been put on a list for lung a lung transplant.so it's been real tough latley but I missed watching ya all and hope to meet ya all someday but great lil vid bud . godbless and stay safe...
Thank you for the great video Josh! My wife watches your channel as well and by the end if the day I will be in the yard fixing bare spots!! LOL. CAn you call her and let her know I would like a new knife? 😂
you can go to any lawn supply company and get a 4 cu. ft bale of hydromulch it has fertilizer and shredded paper just wet it down upu can mowover it
yep....but straw residue is good for your lawn too my brotha
We get 40+ mph sustained winds on the regular here. Loose straw would vanish quickly, unfortunately. The mats are unfortunately a necessity for us, because they can be staked down.
Would you suggest on that compacted soil to run the spiked drum aerator over it
Is it better to just leave the seed on top or sow it into the soil/compost? I tend to aggressively harrow, seed then run the harrow back over. Final is horse manure compost or hay covering. We have a hobby horse farm. Never a shortage of manure compost🐎🐎. Hay is always handy as well.
Have you thought about using any ballast weight . She looks bit tip heavy in the front .
Update please
I've got clover taking over my yard so I have to kill it off b4 I seed grass or will the grass seed take over from the clover? I started out with just a little patch of clover then the daughter put horses out and they spreed it everywhere.
Do i need fertilizer? Thanks for your advice and video!
Everyday is a windy day here😎
been a very windy spring for us too
First! Good morning guys!
Keep us updated in a couple of weeks on how this turned out!
Josh, Problem were having is finding straw nowadays. No one has it. Not TSC, Lowes, or our local co-op. What's the deal with that? Got any idea why?
Have you tried letting the chickens work the area prior to seeding?
Would rototilling the compost into the dirt make better soil? Seems like the roots will stop when it hits the clay and you will not have long term success.
the clay will eventually settle into the soil....you're gonna soften and feed that clay...of course you could till it up..bu t most folks don't have a tiller my brotha....but a great suggestion for sure!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer what size 4wheeler is right for a loader system? Is there a minimum size 4wheeler?
Greet sir
The straw also keeps the birds off your seed.
Unless they are free range chickens. It's been a losing battle.
I'm guessing your method has the added advantage that the birds don't think you laid out lunch for them
I’m sure you can. But can I use old hay that my horses don’t need to be eating to use as the cover?
How about on slopes
Hey Josh isn’t that the spot you pulled out those stumps last year?
How about hubby bribing wifey I could use that bucket for my 4wheeler and a knife. I can fix all the bare spots .
👍👍👍👍
I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I get rid of the grass. Seriously I don't have a blade of grass in my yard. Good job though. 👍😎
Great video. Nothing worse than mowing or tending to dirt
Composted cow manure, but yet you mentioned it was a pile of horse manure.
yep.....I didn't need to go buy bags when I had a pile all ready to go my friend
Only 6 years of trying and my lawn still looks like the bare desert.
@@stanwebb3480 yes thats the issue. Our land was cleared and all the good top soil is off in the woods.
ours too!
Perfect Josh, tips that are invaluable.
Or just put a patio there
lol....the grass should do the trick...this was a nightmare of big poplar trees...county planning put my darn septic system right beside it...duh...didn't take a genius to realize that was a bad idea right!
Umm, you just runined your sand trap. Sand with crabgrass.
lol
So you know how to grow grass? Are you going to change the name to the stoner ridge farm? Just kidding Josh!
There’s a much easier way, look up germinating grass in a wheelbarrow. U germinate seed for 5 days in peat moss or sawdust after wetting and covering, uncover on day 5, lay long half grown seedin peat moss on bare spots, put straw on top and water, grows in 1 wk. your working way too hard.
