You are right it is a beautiful log .and a lil tip if ya don't know .when you have alot of sawdust on the log if you have a sheetrock mudding trial have one handy by your mill and works great to just skim the dust off of the wood so you can see how the grain is when dry and wet just a lil tip I've seen allot of cutters use the so anyways great vid and lovely wood

Eleven years ago I lost a large red oak to disease and a wind storm that blew it down, just missing my deck. It measured at 46 1/2 feet. Even the end grain was impressive. Counting the rings, the tree dated back to 1937. We now have a cedar shelter, but that oak was one fine shade tree and we miss it.

It's been a long time and mill blades may be different. In machining I was taught to have the teeth away from you, stand on one spot, and with your palms and grasping the blade, turn your palms in towards each other and pull your hands towards center. The blade would fold the same way but was under control.
Like I say, this may be a different animal. Great videos sir.

That is the same model wood-mizer sawmill that my friend had. That was his way of making the living. He built a lot of beautiful tables and fireplace mantels. He used to give me some ideas scrap and I would build the wall tables and shelves and benches and sell them. We put a huge cedar mantel in a 2 million dollar home, it was live edge with limbs a couple inches long. It was10"x14"x 12' with hidden mounting. And we build him a 4 by 10 dinner table out of Cedar as well

Hi Josh Just a tip when you're changing blades put mill head at good work height as you said then you can also move head to far end to change blade then you don't have to stand in the middle of sawmill it makes it easier . cheers . Plus you can clean off any sap and sawdust build up too. Have fun!

Nicely done! That is beautiful. I have never used anything like that machine myself, but from watching you change the blade I did think of something that might help. If it is a pain keeping the blade on the roller on the far side while installing the new blade. You could try using a pair of wide mouth vise grip pliers that will go around the wheel without putting pressure on the wheel itself and hold the blade loosely in place. Just depends on which is a bigger pain. Thanks for the video!

Great video. My blade changing tips.
Find the way that works best for you and is safe. Then do it the exact same way every time. This come into play at the end of a tiring day when mistakes happen.
I never let anyone else help to install the blade. You would think it would help but it bites you every time.
Now you need a logging winch for your tractor. Norse 450.

I always scrape the sawdust off of the wheel belts when I replace a blade. Have you hit any metal embedded in a log? I use a hand held scanner to try and find metal before the blade does. In red oak you usually will see staining as you get close to the metal unless you are milling thick slabs. Keep on milling!

I had a friend milling his on evening and weekend for over Ten Years and they have a 100% hard wood home that would have costed $200,000.00 20 years ago. It would be over a Million if built today. That home has been in many of a storm and in 20 years it still look's as new today as it did back then. and I dough that he has $2500.00 in the whole thing besides his Time. and his old mill that his Dad owned . The metal roofing was his biggest cost back then.

i mean no desrespect, you got a really cool thing going on. you are green using your mill, it takes some time to really get used to it and learn what you do and dont have to do, like pushing the blade past the end of the log and lifting the carrage to bring it back. stop when the blade comes through the end before it goes past, then bring it back. the blade will scrape the dust and you can see how strait your cut is. i dont know if that makes sence but it saves a few seconds and increses your production and less wear and tear on the lifting motor and the blade.

Just a suggestion as your new to this. I noticed you were cutting the side where it was high on the ends and low in the middle. You want to take a larger waste cut so that you even out both ends with one cut. The way you did it will get you there but cost you more in blades wear. So one larger cut is better then sever smaller thickness cuts. You may also want to keep a large square at the mill so that you can make sure the log is square to the machine. If you have levelers in each side you can use them to lift the log and clean the supports of dust and such. log levels are also a great way to side the log in either direction. I personal take larger waste cuts on all side as I use the waste (with bark) as firewood but I'm not sure you need firewood or not.
Also the electric saw is great, I keep one and also use an electric leave blower on hand to blow off the wood and mill. As for removing the sawdust on the wood I find a large Stainless Steel Taping Knife.

I don't know for sure but I would have rolled the log a little more and measured and adjusted the height of the pith to the bed to the mill on each end, to make my first cut. If you go to time stamp 9:03, it looks like you have two flat and straight sides on the left of the log. I wasn't there though. I think in some instances adjusting the pith to the bed is necessary. I've seen people grab a chain saw when all they needed to do was rotate the log a little to cut it to fit. I don't believe in ripping wood with a chain saw.

I use bacon grease to lube my rails.

I think you are putting too much ATF on your rails. I apply a light coating with the end of an old sock. You do want to soak the felt track wiper the is held on with wing nuts. Also lubricate the masts, the lower rail and the lower rollers. I also clean all rollers before each day of milling.

You can never have to much atf. Nice thing is sawdust doesn't stick to it like oil.

Dull blade-would have been nice to listen to the saw instead of the music when you were sawing with a dull blade-then again with a fresh-sharp blade. Not only teeth getting dull-but losing their "set"from friction as the blade dulls. This machine sort of works like a large vertical Oliver 36" shop bandsaw I used in the high school shop. That machine-9' tall 5Hp direct drive motor on the lower wheel.Changing blades was a two man job and you needed a small stepladder to reach the top wheel.A dull blade or one with lost set does make an unmistakable sound.I just wanted to listen to it on a horizontal machine like this one.The 5hp motor on that shop saw had tremendous torque!!You could use coarse tooth blades on it for resaw.Could cut to more than 12"deep.36" throat.

ATF might be the wrong stuff, it has friction additives that make it great for automatic transmissions and not so ideal for chains. Chain oil has slightly different properties. It’s probably not a big deal...

How many hours on the Mill now? About how many hours do you have to change out the blade? Do they have different blades for cutting hard woods and soft wood?
