Falcons management were stunned Penix Jr was still available at #8! They just played the Draft Board and couldn't let the pick slip down, he's NFL ready right now, and other teams with Top 10 picks were definitely going to pick Penix, if falcons didn't per sports team insiders. Penix Jr, will back-up Kirk Cousins with Honor in case Captain Kirk tweaks the injury by unseen circumstances. Rise Up

Penix was a smart signing for sure, once everybody calms down and processes this, pretty sure most people will be on board. The problem is, a lot of negativity is is thrown due to not looking at our situation the last seven years. MR2 was not exactly his best and Mariota/Ridder. We don't want that, a quality qb is hard to get, we got two...allegedly. we can find all other positions.
There is logic if you look at it from an Atlanta Falcons point of view. Kirk isn't exactly expensive per year$45mil) and and rookie qb's need to learn and get into NFL speed. Not every good qb busts into the league like CJ Stroud, I want Penix to study under Cousins and we can call it good in a couple of years.

The Penix pick was smart. They were 7-10. Kurt has to be worth 2 more wins than Ridder and Morris is worth 2 more wins than Smith. You replaced the worst parts of your tean with people who will actually use the weapons they have. 11-6 is more than enough to win what will be another weak NFC South year where whoever won it last falls off the map again. Penix will have time to develop his body and his game as long as Kurt stays healthy and if Kurt can't stay healthy they'll still have a fighting shot at having the best QB in the division. If they need more pieces this year they should pick them up via trade or waiver wire.

@@jamalstrickland1 One DE is not going make a difference for the Falcons. MP was the 4th best rated player, second best rated QB on the Falcons board and he has the best arm of all the QBs drafted. This is very well documented. MP will be starting next season because he will be better than KC. He can easily throw the ball 60 yards and hit a target the size of a quarter. $100M is nothing for today's QB and when you have the opportunity to draft a franchise QB when you don't have one and do it without giving future #1 picks, you jump on it. OP is pretty much spot on. KC brings 2, 3 more wins during season but he cannot carry a team, especially in the playoffs. Back to the defense. The falcons drafted potentially 3 superstars in rounds 2-4. Watch their tape and MP's tape while at it. BTW, KC will only be with the Falcons for 2 years at most, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him get traded next year and they take the hit. You have to play the QB that provides the best chance to win and that will be MP.

    1. Cousin Kirk, a Quarterback who pretends to work on Mondays, and doesnt work on Tuesdays and his silly fans, are upset that Michael Penix Jr. (the most talented college Quarterback since Trevor Lawrence, Caleb Williams & Deshaun Watson), a Quarterback who works from Sunday till Sunday got drafted. đŸ˜…đŸ€ŁđŸ˜‚
    2. Jeebus Forking Cripes... the Michael Penix Jr. whinging is getting on my nerves.
The mistake wasnt drafting Michael Penix. The mistake was signing Kirk Cousins for $100M. Dude has earned more than Tom Brady, but only has 1 playoff win.
    3. People are pretending as if Falcons drafting Laiatu Latu or Dallas Turner would have been the piece for Kirk Cousins to take the Falcons to the Superbowl. Kirk Cousins could have JJ Watt and Nick Bosa and he still wouldnt go to the Superbowl.
    4. 14 starting QBs got injured in 2023. Therefore you might as well take a very good QB in the 1st round and a good Defensive End in the 2nd round and thats exactly what Atlanta did.

      1. There’s no guarantee the Penix will ever be as good as Cousins was in Minnesota. I think so and hope so, but it’s not a guarantee. He has a long injury history and some defects in his throwing motion.
      2. Drafting Penix is only a mistake BECAUSE they’re committed to Cousins for AT LEAST half of Penix’s rookie deal. If Penix is as good as we expect, they just wasted two years to take advantage of his cheap window to compete big. If you have a ready-made prospect like Penix with 6 fkn years of experience, then you don’t need to sit him
      3. I think you’re underrating Kirk. He’s inarguably a top 3 QB in the NFC, and they play in the weakest division. You build a strong defense, and who besides the 49ers should they be afraid to take.
      4. This is your most ridiculous take. You don’t plan for your newly acquired $100M QB to get injured LOL. And even if you did, the 8th overall pick is not where you draft a 2 year backup 😂

I don’t mind that they signed Kirk Cousins because you get a lot for 100milly. We get a veteran in the huddle to lead the young players and he knows enough about the offense to be able to teach the young players and groom Penix. I’m good with Kirk and it will be a success if he leaves the team better than he found them. He can teach Penix how to be a pro while we win games. Most people liken this to the Green Bay situation, but to me it’s more like Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith. Kurt can win but the brass thinks Penix is next level talent.

Drafts are the front end of a shiny new thing. Fans don't look at what the pick has achieved down the road. To see how bad the Falcons picks have been over the years, a deeper analysis of the contributions the picks made over the course of their career. Tak McKinley spent 6 seasons in the NFL (4 with ATL) but only started 27 games as a 1st round pick in 2017. I think a moderate dive into Fontenot's draft picks will provide clarity. For example, 2021 3rd round pick Jalen Mayfield, who started 16 games as a rookie, is out of the league due to an injury. On the other hand, 4th-round pick CB Darren Hall started 10 games over 2 seasons. He was waived in training camp leading into the 2023 season and failed to make another ball club.

This was a rational, informed objective discussion. Mostly. Thank you.
I think where Fontenot failed was paying $180 million for a 36 year old with an Achilles injury in the first place. I would have traded for Minshew or someone like him - then drafted Penix. Then you have plenty of cap to trade for FA’s on defense.
But, the Falcons want to win now and in the future and the whole management team has been shell-shocked at QB in the past. At least three other teams wanted to trade up to take Penix, but ATL said no. Penix was the highest impact player on the board at 8. They took him according to Fontenot’s strategy - impact over need, if available.
They may have put a screw in the locker room chemistry. But, maybe the players can work it out. Only time will tell.

No one needs anyone to explain why a team made a pick. The Falcons GM already explained it & no one is gonna convince me, a 35 year Falcons Fan that using a 1st Round Pick on a QB & Signing a proven starter to a huge contract in the same offseason is a good move. Now the funny thing here is all the people claiming it's a brilliant pick have 5-6 Years to make such a claim because we won't even know if Penix is a hit at QB in the NFL until 5-6 years from now. So it's real convenient to get your high horse now when the verdict is so far off. It would be better to just not even talk about Penix because he wont even be playing unless Terry Fontenots other move to get Cousins turns bad & if that happens then that's another strike against the leadership. People talking like you can package Penix up for 3-4 years & keep him from aging & roll him out at 24 & act like you just drafted him are delusional. In the NFL just like in Life you only have so much Capital & you have to use it wisely & this was a terrible allocation of Capital by the Falcons. Falcons would have been better off drafting a NEED to WIN NOW.

Could finally believe . Some still and always will believe that a white boy can win in the NFL. Eventhough they see all of the white boys that has been drafted over the last 6 or 7 years are still carrying a clipboard on gamedays . While guys like Lamar , C j stroud , Patrick Mc Holmes and on and on ! Are tearing up the league. If all things were equal , there would be more . Into every conversation about Penix When there's not a single one of them that's upset with a white guy being given a 100 mil ! People are upset that a white boy didn't get drafted 8th and would make more than Penix . Especially since three black quarterbacks were drafted ahead or Nix and Mcarthy .
