One of the most technically impressive movies of it's time, both for the use of CGI when such things were unheard of and the massive practical effects budget at work. It's also based on a short story you probably never heard of, but does that matter? It's got Arnold Schwarzenegger, gunfire and explosions.

Just think if all of this was a memory implant and after the movie ends Doug wakes up at total recall, he would have memories of murdering his wife, co-workers and a shitload of other cannon fodder. How he could adjust back to normal life after that? In my opinion the "secret agent" implant was always just a prayer for psychosis, anyone who gets that will remember themselves killing other people and that seriously can't be healthy for normal persons mind.

Doug may never figure that out for certain, but it's pretty clear that it's all real. Why?
We saw many scenes of what the villain's were doing by themselves without Doug. Those wouldn't exist if it were all fake memories.

15:07 She was also in Falling Down (which is also a masterpiece).
23:09 Technically, Martians on Mars weren't "aliens." Not if they were indigenous (or naturalized), that is. If they came from somewhere else, then they were aliens, at least until they became naturalized to the environs. See also the Eridians from Borderlands (who are continuously referred to, along with the Vaults, as being "alien" by Tannis, Jack, etc.).

A lot of the writing is hard to make sense of. At Rekal for example, at first Bob Mclain acts like he doesn't want Quaid to take the Mars package, like he's aware of the Agency and that Quaid is planted with a false identity, but then he talks Quaid into the Ego Trip, which is the opposite of what he would do if he's worried about Quaid recalling his identity.
