One of the most technically impressive movies of it's time, both for the use of CGI when such things were unheard of and the massive practical effects budget at work. It's also based on a short story you probably never heard of, but does that matter? It's got Arnold Schwarzenegger, gunfire and explosions.

This is the Paul Verhoven bridge between Robocop and Starship Troopers.
It has the gritty and raunchy violence of RoboCop, but it also has the larger scale and space military that would be prominent in Starship Troopers.
I actually hope you keep "The summer of Arnold" going until June 20th just so everyone can keep making comments that "it's not summer anymore". I think Decker knows that guys!
Great review btw. This is probably the first really violent movie I saw as a kid so it holds a special place in myevil heart. Also, the effects by Rob Bottin are freakin' awesome (as usual)!!!
Hey, that "they're all connected!" guard that barks back at Michael Ironside is Marc Alaimo/Gul Dukat!!
Fun fact: in the original theatrical release, you could see the clamp holding up the Mars Backdrop in the kissing scene at the end. It was later digitally removed, but you can still see the sharp upper edge of the cloud stage prop as it is moved to the side.

A masterpiece indeed, hard to find another movie so absolutely stuffed with ingenuity, twists and WTF moments. Plus the Verhoeven/Schwarzenegger combo, there will never be anything like this made ever again.
Since all the ambiguity was missing from the remake, i'll bet no one was thinking about THAT movie after leaving the theater. how to remake a classic but leave its soul on the cutting room floor.
the remake is horrible. no mars, no mutants, except one random woman with 3 tits just for the hell of it. just nonstop overly silly action scenes with unrealistic cgi.
This was Sharon Stone at her peak GODDAMN!-ness. Seriously though, as many times as I’ve seen this movie, I realize that I don’t think I’ve actually seen the first 15 minutes or so.
When I was a kid I would always rewind her first scene lol

Total Recall is the greatest movie ever made in my opinion,absolutely timeless.
At the point in my life that this came out the eye bulging suffocation scenes were hands down THE most traumatizing thing I had ever seen on film. And I had already seen the Exorcist, Freddy, Jason, etc at a young age. Holy shit did I hate this movie back then lol
Brilliant movie - last of the big-budget, 'old-school' effects of models and camerawork; filmed on the Mexico City Metro and Estudios Churabusco in DF.
Just think if all of this was a memory implant and after the movie ends Doug wakes up at total recall, he would have memories of murdering his wife, co-workers and a shitload of other cannon fodder. How he could adjust back to normal life after that? In my opinion the "secret agent" implant was always just a prayer for psychosis, anyone who gets that will remember themselves killing other people and that seriously can't be healthy for normal persons mind.

Doug may never figure that out for certain, but it's pretty clear that it's all real. Why?
We saw many scenes of what the villain's were doing by themselves without Doug. Those wouldn't exist if it were all fake memories.
Thank you. I've pointed this out many times to people who think this movie(and others) are all just in the heads of a single character. Narrative wise it makes no sence.

It's weird how close some of the future predictions in this movie were. Not the recall but the johnny cab (self driving cars/uber), AR videogames, using car dashboard for communications, Skype...
If you listen veeeeery carefully to the background techs during the memory implant scene, you'll hear the one line that tells you whether it's all an implanted memory or not.

I'm pretty sure that TRON, The Last Starfighter, Return of the Jedi, and Young Sherlock Holmes beat this movie to the punch for CGI effects in major motion pictures, by quite a few years.
"Get your ass to Mars " scene was 2nd most memorable. Can you tell this was my favorite movie as a kid. So many memorable quotes, especially Arnies struggling vocalizations "aahheeoohhaiou"

If they came from somewhere else, then they were aliens, at least until they became naturalized to the environs. See also the Eridians from Borderlands (who are continuously referred to, along with the Vaults, as being "alien" by Tannis, Jack, etc.).

That Robot Picardo with Robert Picardo’s voice is uncanny. Also is this where everyone makes fun of the Schwarzenegger noises? Or in all the movies, he really does do that.

What if the entire movie is just quads life flashing before his eyes as he dies on mars in the intro scene? Starts out normal but slowly becomes more and more unbelievable and then ludicrous as the oxygen in his brain depletes and we finally see a shiney happy "White light moment" with Quad essentially turning Mars into heaven as he finally dies from exposure.

A lot of the writing is hard to make sense of. At Rekal for example, at first Bob Mclain acts like he doesn't want Quaid to take the Mars package, like he's aware of the Agency and that Quaid is planted with a false identity, but then he talks Quaid into the Ego Trip, which is the opposite of what he would do if he's worried about Quaid recalling his identity.

Total Recall is a classic sci-fi action mystery thriller.
I've seen this movie, like... a lot. But only once all the way through. I think I saw the scene in the tunnel like, once a month on USA network growing up.
What a great movie. Also it makes me really want a Claridge Hi-Tec pistol, but man those are rare.
