  • This week, the Sola Grand gets a huge radio improvement. Android Head Unit from Phoenix Automotive replaces the stock tiny UConnect system!
    This 2014 Grand Cherokee came with the smaller of the two UConnect systems that Jeep offered, which means it's tiny! This video will show you just how easy it is to install an Android based head unit in your Grand Cherokee, and why you would want it for overlanding.
    Want to get rid of that tablet mount, but don't want to give up GaiaGPS or Google Maps? This Android head unit might just be the right choice. Fast boot? Check. Play Store? Check. CarPlay and Android Auto? Also check.
    Products in this video:
    Phoenix Automotive - PX6 10.4" Android 9 Fast Boot - Gold Trim

      Yeah they're shit Don't buy one I promise I had one in my Infinity and you'll want to kill yourself because it's not operating like an Android It's an entire new OS It's not going to be intuitive It works some of the time there's no quality control it's made in the back alleys of Korea or some place like that probably North Korea and I'm not exaggerating a bit You may unalize yourself Just trying to turn it on. When you turn the car on the radio doesn't even turn on like do in any other vehicle I'm telling you it's not intuitive at all You have to turn the radio on separately once the car is on and it's hidden behind 15 windows that you have to go through that are all disgusting looking. To get updates to the backgrounds and have different stuff on there that you see that's cool It doesn't come that way there's literally one guy in Russia that you have to get a hold of on Facebook and if he chooses to write you back he'll sell you, I said so you the files that allow you to do that. I know all this because I've done this before I'm giving you the update if he's not

Was curious (skimmed most of the comments, sorry if i missed this)...do you recall when you installed this and had the Jeep Grand Cherokee...does it affect the controls on the steering wheel for the menus/items that are visible behind the steering wheel? For example, do things like tire pressure, oil life, gas remaining, etc. still work with the Phoenix kit installed? Thanks!

      Everything on the steering wheel still worked, but the controls on the back for some reason were swapped from stock (volume on the other side of the steering wheel) but I'm pretty sure that was a software setting. The only change to the cluster itself was that the time would only read in 24hr format no matter what I did for some reason

    Thanks for your video, it is very helpful. I am just about to buy one, just got 4 questions, which I could not find any answers to when researching the web:
    1) When backing up, does the unit have moving guide-lines that guide you as you steer, or are those just static? One of the best things I find are the spot on guidelines that really help to prevent kerb-rash when parking close to kerbs etc.
    2) Does the unit support the existing Tyre Pressure Monitoring sensors that are already factory installed in the wheels? Obviously the tyre pressure is shown in the instrument cluster and not the head unit, but I was wondering if I loose this function, when changing the Head unit?
    3) Did you loose any functions in the instrument cluster after changing over?
    4) I noticed you have a newer 6 core unit with 4GB RAM. How long does it take to boot up, when starting the engine? I read that the older units take up to 30sec sometimes 45 sec to boot up when you starting the car.
    Sorry for all the questions, just could not find any info on the above queries.

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety +10

      Great questions! Let me see if I can help with those.
      1) Mine retained the moving lines that show wheel placement when in reverse
      2) You should retain your TPMS readout in your instrument cluster, and from what I understand there is a way to add it to the radio as well. So out of the box you'll have pressure read out in the cluster, and possibly add-on read out in the radio
      3) The only function I lost in the instrument cluster was having the time displayed in the corner. It still displayed the time, it would just show it in 24 hour format with 12 hour selected, and then vice versa
      4) Boot up is very quick I found. If you've driven it within the last 24 hours, it is about as fast as the OEM radio. After that 24 hours pass, fast boot times out to prevent your battery from getting drained and then it takes about 30-40 seconds to fully boot

      One thing not mentioned in the video is the CANBUS decoder box. This is the magic device that allows you to keep a lot of the OEM functionality like reverse camera lines, climate controls (very important since the new screen in this case removes the original ones!). About tire pressure monitoring, if you have the Torque or Torque Pro android app, that information can be displayed since it is one of the many pieces of information that the OBDII port transmits (Torque Pro works with a special 'dongle' that plugs into the OBDII diagnostic port, usually somewhere under the steering wheel).

    Just subscribed. I have a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee and my uconnect head unit has an error message " checking for a USB stick with an update. " Then another after that saying " There was an problem while staying the head unit. " And nothing comes on. So thinking about replacing the uconnect either with the the original or one like yours. Just worried the Tesla one won't work correctly and if I still would be able to use all the car options. What do you recommend.

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      The main reason I moved to the Tesla one was that my OEM Uconnect was crashing when it got hot. The Tesla unit doesn't retain any of the Uconnect hardware, so I would say it's likely that the error won't cause any issues if you make the swap. There are some weird quirks when you are using the baked in software that make it very apparent that it's not an OEM radio. If you like something that just works without tinkering then I would lean more towards replacing with a newer version of the Uconnect. If you don't mind tinkering and it having odd language/translation issues or it randomly glitching out, then the Tesla is pretty good

    Nick! So funny finding you on this... I've repaired my factory screen in my SRT twice and looking to get rid of it. How long does this take to boot up? Do you know if the vent seat function will work? Have you tired apply car play?

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety +3

      Haha man it's too long! If the radio had been started up within a 24 hour period, I found it booted about as fast as my stock one. After that it could take about 30 seconds to fully start, but the backup camera is usable withing 5-10 seconds. Not sure about the apple car play or seat vents, but my heated seats lost the Low function for some reason. I highly recommend looking into the development forums for these radios on XDA, they've got som ROMs that really tidy up the UI. That being said, the ROMs only work with radios from certain suppliers, so you've got to be careful about that

If it changes and there's just no video, then you might want to try switching around which video input it's connected to. It's very possible it was mislabeled from the factory

    I like the OEM climate control, mine has the nicer UConnect system. I thought it was standard on the limited.

    Does it affect sound quality? And do the adjustments for audio work?

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      Audio quality was about the same, and was way more adjustable than my stock head unit

    last question, i watched a guy replace his radio from a 2012 GC with some aftermarket unit he mentioned that you will need a device so that the jeep wont think the stereo had been stolen. Was there something that came with the unit to plug into so that the radio would work once you unplug the factory unit?

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      I didn't have any issues with any security measures on mine, and there wasn't any separate devices other than the main screen and control unit that mine came with. I wonder if they changed how the Uconnect system reported its presence to the BCM

      We didn't need to, it worked with the factory camera and had provisions to add a front facing one

    What brand lift kit are you using?

    • @SolaOutdoors
      @SolaOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      We had stacked a Bilstein 5100 strut set with a 2.5" spacer lift to get to around 3.25" in the front, and then a simple spacer lift in the rear from rough country

      I put it inside the plastic cover for the rear view mirror mount. It fit with plenty of room and I just tucked the wires into the headliner and down the passenger side plastic trim

      It's fully plug and play with the backup camera. In fact, the head unit that I got had an input for adding a front facing camera if you wanted to
