    8:27 I love symbolism but I also think this is a huge stretch. My guess is super simple, Nintendo is just advertising the Peach and TEC side-plot, and hence the more emotional aspect of TTYD. This game can be pretty emotional outside of that side-plot, so I think it's a good thing to include in the trailer, but obviously not during the super hype, rapid-fire showcase of locations and set-pieces.

    I'm gonna play devil's advocate and counter all of your points.
    1. Paper Mario 64 is on NSO. I'm convinced with all the GCN games we're getting on Switch means NSO isn't getting GC games. That's why they skipped PM 64.
    2. I'm also baffled by the PM 64 title theme in the trailer, but remember how Super Paper Mario had references to the two game's parties? And how that game also only had cameos to the previous two games? Yeah, these references don't necessarily guarantee anything because they didn't in the past.
    3. 3:10 This is because the original's aspect ratio was smaller, but the remake is using widescreen, so more stuff will be on screen now. It's a classic thing that comes up a lot with pre-widescreen enhancements. You can notice this happening during other moments in the trailer too, like seeing Mario in the background of the Yoshi Egg scene where you couldn't see him originally. Same with "Mario" saying "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" You can't see anyone else in frame in the original but "Mario".
    4. The addition to Mario's house I think is just them being more consistent with the original. A little nod to fans, but that's it.
    Believe me, I'd love a healthy portion of new stuff for the remake, but I don't think any of this points to 64 stuff specifically. That said, I'd love if all the 64 partners showed up at the very least. That'd be great to see finally happen.

    You say that they’re not writing new dialogue for this, however they technically are. For English, and maybe even for languages absent from the OG release specifically. There’s already a few lines that while not too different fall more in line with the Japanese script, which seems perfectly in-tact looking at the JP trailer. And this has another note as while it’s hard to notice any changes comparable to that, the JP version is also the only version where TEC has the red eye mirroring HAL-9000. This means that they definitely are changing things to better fall in line with the JP version and script and are rewriting dialogue to better fit on top of any changes already.

    I think the biggest thing you missed off when saying about why they'd remake Thousand Year Door is that Thousand Year Door is so difficult to get now, Paper Mario's been on every home console since the Wii but to play Thousand Year Door you'd need a Gamecube copy and the price of those now is pretty insane. As for new elements, I want to be careful not to expect too much, but I think given there's a precedent with Lady Bow in the original game and that there were those unused textures for all the original partners it'd be great if we saw them all perhaps turn up in locations in the late game. Of course, the same argument could have been made for Superstar Saga with the Nintendo character cameos, although that might have been more difficult for them to put in anyway than characters from the first Paper Mario would be. I can see the argument it's needless fan service, but then the same could be said about Luigi's whole appearance in the original game with his stories that don't really affect the actual game's plot at all, having so much detail and 'lore' was one of the best things about the original Paper Mario games, like being able to tattle every single NPC and area you were in.

    Very nice observations. I’ve always liked how the original three games in the series feel like part of the same established continuity, like each new game is another book in an ongoing series. Even minor things like Mario starting out with his hammer in TTYD and Jr. Troopa appearing in the background of a random email get the point across. Makes it feel like it’s the same Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Bowser across the three games.

  • @marcoscolon4103
    @marcoscolon4103 Před 9 měsíci +1

    okay hear me out, what if they remade ttyd "first" as a way to reorder the games? like peach tells mario about this treasure map and he goes off with her to find the treasure, saving her from being the shadow queens vessel, then after they go back home to the mushroom kingdom, she invites them to a party at her castle where bowser shows up and starts the events of PM64
    the only thing that breaks this is the picture of his old partners in the house, meaning it all already happened, could be a cool way to have them all linked more cohesively

    Paper Mario is already available on the Switch just as it was on the Wii & WiiU.
    Thousand Year Door could be played on backwards compatible Wiis, but wasn't playable on the WiiU, just like every other Gamecube game.
    If they remade Paper Mario for Switch & not Thousand Year Door, we'd have 2 versions of Super Mario RPG, 2 versions of Paper Mario, & 0 versions of Thousand Year Door.

    I mean, they did include PM64 in the NSO service, so Nintendo IS finally letting new fans play the old PM games on their newest console.
    It's not perfect, but at least the classic games are here, getting a decent ammount of exposure and being relatively easily accessible.
    Combined with the Mario RPG remake, I think this whole situation will at least spread awareness of Mario's old RPGs to new fans.

    The toad town pipe is more apparent because the game is in wide screen. It might also be why the back of the house is visible. The switch isn’t in 4:3 aspect ratio

  • @jadonh
    @jadonh Před 9 měsíci +1

    I’m curious if there was ever meant to be more to do with Mario’s house in the original game because Mario and Luigi’s bedroom was modeled in it, but you can’t ever see it in normal gameplay. (And there was even a drawing you couldn’t see in the room.) So, I’m curious how much of this new stuff has to do with things they wanted to implement before but just didn’t have time to.
    Also, about the pipe being more prominent in the trailer, I think that might just be a byproduct of the game being in widescreen now as opposed to purposefully making the pipe more visible. Same with the back of Mario and Luigi’s house. Doesn’t take away from the fact they’ve kept them consistent, though. Honestly, I’d love it if Toad Town was at least fully modeled and you could explore it, though.
    Having a short segment to actually GET to the boat by going to Toad Town Port, as you kind of suggested, would be SUPER fun. Especially if some of the old partners saw you off, but they had reasons they couldn’t go. Or maybe Mario just wanted them to keep an eye on the Mushroom Kingdom.
    I don’t think they’d do this, but it’d be super fun if there was a short post-game story with the old partners that took place in the Mushroom Kingdom that culminates in fighting a boss that references Super Paper Mario as a kind of foreshadowing. That’s just kind of a fun idea, but I’ll be super happy with the remake regardless! (Wouldn’t be opposed to a Paper Mario 64 remake eventually, though, since it’s my favorite Paper Mario game.)

    Thousand Year Door lined up with sunshine with sunshine references. There's been so many mainline Mario games since then... Makes you wonder what they will do for the true Paper Mario 3. Galaxy references? Rosalina? Lumas? Cappy? Kingdom references? 3D World references. lol so much new stuff and then of course their original stuff as well.

    I remember talking with my British Uncle about WHY I would buy a remake of a game I'd already played YEARS ago and why they're remaking it in the first place and I told him about improvements they make, changes and add-ons and for MANY people who grew up playing the series (I was 17 when it came out) they have children now and can introduce them to their favorite games in a way that won't make the kid go 'This is SO old!' and then said 'You can't honestly tell me that if they re-booted Mr. Bean you wouldn't be excited about it and watch it.'' and THAT is when it truly clicked for him. Honestly, letting you explore the Toad Town in the Remake as a post-game content is probably the best choice to preserve PM64 content in HD.
    I doubt they gonna remake PM64 anytime soon, i think Intelligent System would like to make a new Paper Mario game for the Switch 2 after they're done with TTYD.
    If they're going to remake PM64, we probably need to keep watch if the original are missing on Switch 2's NSO. If that's the case then it's a repeat of TTYD remake, but on Switch 2

    I thought they showed TEC to show their (its?) Red Eye. In the international GCN version, TEC's eye was Blue. I'm not sure if this was to make them seem more approachable (Red Eyes = "evil") or to cover up a Space Odyssey reference, but to me, showing TEC's eye as Red could be a hint at certain other things being uncensored.

    I hope they remake the original Paper Mario and Super Paper Mario after this one, since those two are usually considered the best games after TTYD. At the very least they have enough interesting content to be considered worth preserving.

  • @Madchimpz
    @Madchimpz Před 9 měsíci +1

    If you recall past remasters of Nintendo games it is perfectly plausible for this game to have additional content even if it's something smaller like accessing Toad Town from Paper Mario 64.
    Super Mario RPG is getting remastered in a very similar fashion with it remaining faithful to the original and mainly being a graphics overhaul, but offers new battle mechanics like the party specials and boss rematches.
    Oot 3D added boss rush and brought back masterquest.
    Majora's Mask 3D made tweaks and changed how you fought bosses (mostly all changes for the worse though)
    Wind Waker HD made some tweaks like the fast sail and bottle messages.
    Twilight Princess HD added a new cave of ordeals for Wolf Link
    A bit of a different situation but Mario 64 DS added a ton of content.
    Probably many other examples I can't recall.

    I know that this video is 6 months old but I don't think that the first game needs a remake more. And the only reason for it is that you basically could legally play this game on the Wii, Wii U and the Switch. Whereas the only legal way to play Paper Mario 2 is by owning the original Gamecube copy which nowdays is extremly expensive.
