That's why I liker JRE, sometimes they talk about the most random shit like that South Korean plane crash crises... Like WTF man, who knows that?. I love it.
The time it takes to say something as a korean and as a person using English in a culturally appropriate way was a big factor too. You can be just as slow using English but not culturally appropriate English. This is true for multiple Asian cultures, it takes a much longer time to communicate a lot of things. A junior talking to a superior won't say ‘Yo! You want water?’; and more likely say something like, ‘It's a warm day for a nice refreshment, no?’. You can be equally indirect using English, but English speaking people don't do that. I lived in Japan for a few months and it was hard for me to grasp that they will strenuously avoid saying no, in America you can get a hand stamp and leave many amusement parks and then be allowed back in without paying twice. So we asked if they did that and they did not say no, they kept saying things like "Why would you want to leave?" and then later "If you needed medical attention" at which point we got it, but it was just an easy answer of "no". At this point we were fascinated and tried to see if we could get them to actually say "no" and we could not. You could be just as vague in English, but everyone knows that you don't do that.
We had very different experiences in foreign countries. When I went to South Korea they loved speaking to us Americans and learning our slang and how we actually speak. I have family there from a military marriage and have been three times. There was never any of this long winded way of speaking nonsense you're talking about. If anything they would say "would you like a beverage" where I'd normally say "do you want a drink" literally are both 5 word phrases and take maybe a millisecond longer for them to say. I get the feeling you have never left the country.
Black belts in TKD know this all too well. Not saying "sir" to a higher belt is taken as blatant disrespect unintentionally or not. You get ONE warning usually when you are just starting out. However it's not as authoritative as it sounds just deep culture of respect
I worked for Koreans and you are completely correct about the culture and traditions. And also, I believe the aviation language all over the world is English...not sure about that
I swear Joe has told that 'asian couldnt tell his captain they were gonna crash so they crashed' story about four times all with different asian countries
All commercial pilots must speak English regardless of their country of origin. The problem is they speak their country's version of "English". Add in heavy accent and the fact that the Air Traffic Controller is speaking English as a second language and suddenly no one in the air or on the ground can understand what the other is saying Pilot to ATC: "Eetenjune dower, did id flaat ay-ay-doo-fye. Kamm en blizz, dower hovurr." ATC: "Pleeze rabeet...?" Pilot:"E-ten june dower... ("Attention tower this is flight 8825 , come in please tower over")... ATC: "Ach jes, vlot et-et-tu-vive, vaat eez yah brezend eldudewd und addink bleeze und vaat gen ahh du vorr yu...? oaffer." Pilot: "???.. Um, rribeet blizz (repeat please tower...)" ATC: " um vlot et-ettu-vive, bleeze. (Um, flight 8825, please repeat, over...?)" And so on and so forth....
English is the language of the sky, so they should be speaking English regardless. It is for air traffic transparency in communication. English proficiency is also one of the reasons Chinese airlines pay American pilots $300-400k tax free to fly as captions.
I've lived in Korea and taught English here for 4+ years. It's cute hearing Joe and Michael discuss the formalities of Korean culture and how much it differs from what I grew up with back in the States most my life.
Lol so I have a similar Taekwondo experience where we were only allowed to refer to our instructor as “Master Nigel” he was from Trinidad and Nigel was his last name in pretty sure but I went to his dojo or what ever you want to call it for 3 years I think and spent a lot of time with him outside of the dojo because he used to watch me for my mom as well as other kids from taekwondo me Danny and Xavier all spent so much time with his whole family his wife Teresa and his daughters Charvel and Cassandra we spent so many summers together and we all played Pokémon and Master Nigel would make us do reading assignments but through that whole time me Xavier and Danny all called him Master Nigel I never thought about how weird that was until thought about the discipline aspect of it we all had single moms so they put us around him so much to try to discipline us and that was part of it only calling him Master Nigel ........ good times good times
So, is this the new thing? Commenting that the person in the video has no idea what he's talking about? Oh, ok people in their parents' basement. Whatever you say.
I spar jiu jitsu with a Korean pilot who is a purple belt and I see now why they speak English so well.
