If you rebuild the engine without figuring out what happened to it your new engine may suffer the same fate! Agreed. Free access to a wealth of knowledge without any gate keeping or attitude. I’m literally saving years and thousands of dollars in trial and error watching this. This channel in general is phenomenal.

@@motoiq not the source. You kept mentioning that it could have been a bad oil change or some other reason but had not spoken to the customer. It was obv oil starvation as you explained but what started it all?

@@TreatsOnTheStreets he's implying that the customer or an oil change place started the car up with no oil and they tried to cover up the failure, which is why so much bearing material is mysteriously missing.
He's this crazy combo of the easy going friendly guy but he has been going so long in high performance and seen so much stuff. He's a treasure. So much learned wisdom. When he sneezes he forgets more than I've ever known

Jiffy Lube used the incorrect spec ATF in my sister-in-law's car a number years ago. They ended up owning up to it and replacing the trans. When I worked at Infiniti years later, we would have vehicles of customers who service their Infinitis at Jiffy Lube, come in with various issues. It's important to realize that a Jiffy Lube oil changer has nowhere near the same skill level as an Infiniti technician. Beyond substandard oil filters, I wouldn't trust the oil quality each shop uses either. What amazes me is the price for Jiffy Lube oil changes were comparable or even more expensive than our Infiniti dealership!

The ford 5cyl diesel in the Australian ranger have a variable volume oil pump. If you allow the engine oil to drain for longer than 15 minutes, the oil pump often doesn't prime when restarted.......not good.
The after market here makes a non variable replacement oil pump.
Excellent and educational. Now I know a little about what to look for should I ever take apart any of my engines.
I had my oil cooler lines fail at me when I was at about 275k on LQ4, I was on a interstate mountain pass with no shoulder due to construction for awhile so when I shut it off it locked up. I was convinced my engine my was toast to the point I even panic bought a different engine that wasn't a 6.0 because 6.0 ls aren't cheaply found. But then I decided you know what I'm gonna take a look at it and by putting marvel mystery oil in it for a few days and it then started spinning so I dropped the pan and took out all the mains, none spun all immaculate, the damage crank was toast and rods were toast. But the block survived and I'm really impressed. It appeared that while I did lose oil almost everywhere the mains didn't lose all oil. Even the crank journals on the mains were still shiny. 4/5 were even in tolerance. So I am now rebuilding it. Sure its probably gonna cost me a little bit more to do the build than buy another engine but I think the extra money is worth it since I'm building out a 408 stroker so way more power than buying another stock 6.0. Then its a rebuilt engine with a forged bottom end which I'm sure will last longer than a random LQ4 with unknown miles.
The oil pump would have to go on a performance rebuild.
I agree with what you mention, it seems to be the oil pump stuck on the lower side of the volume capacity, from my point of view, you have some tell tellers, the most obvious one is that there was oil cooling, so oil was there just not at not enough volume, enough to cool the parts to not get things extra hot to change them to blue or burple color.
Throw a whole host of bolt-on mods on their engine but skimps out on giving it proper oil changes and oil filters, sounds like such Nissan driver thing to do 😂

That engine is exactly like mine, brand new top of the line everything and after 2000 miles spun a rod bearing from low oil.

Has anyone had this engine apart before? It’s really odd that one of the bearing halves was completely missing. Maybe they forgot to insert it? That would certainly cause low oil pressure. 😂

Dry start damage or super low level , pressure . one thing the crank journals werent floating . Thats the cleanest d.i. head Ive seen in a long time. Great autopsy video .

Going to a jiffylube is like russian roulette, the random employee in there might just have the bare minimum on how to change oil... maybe. The last time i went there they didn't even tighten my new oil filter on: I'm taking about just hand tight. After they did the job i went under and was able to turn my newly installed filter they did with just one finger. Would have been running with a massive trail of oil all the way home. Something as simple as an oil change that's so cheap to do, really should just be done by the owners themselves or a shop you trust and have experience with. Avoid the jiffylube highschooler getting paid crap that could barely do their homework to touch your car.
Hey there Mike, great video on the lack of oil carnage. I have to say my first guess you already nailed. Yeeeahhh...That shitty STP filter tells the truth. The guys at friggin JiffyLube forgot the lube in a jiffy. Oh my golly!! But still I'm having trouble with the missing rod bearing shell. WTF...How did that disappear. But seriously, yep, that engine got twisted with zero oil pressure. At least the block and heads are salvageable.
How did it disappear and not mess up the rod and crank more than it did!

That crank is smoked for how little internal wear there is on the rotating assembly. That motor died QUICK.

I find this quite interesting and concur with both scenarios you've outlined, but I potentially see a 3rd one. The 3rd one is the the computer operates the variable oil pump and just maybe it didn't function as it should have. I'm not to fond of the oil pump they used and not because of it being variable, as I have a variable one in the Porsche flat six I have (some of those have failed too). Interested to see the Part 2 on this for the educational aspect on cause & effect.

I'd wager the solenoid on the variable pump failed and the low volume of lubrication ruined the bearings until enough particle debris jammed the pump vanes.
The variable part was jammed, the vanes were ok.

I had an oil change place straight up forget to put oil in my work car. Ruined the engine
I think that missing con rod bearing was literally consumed by the oil pump. It was definitely started with no oil. Filled and the engine was probably whining for a while and then just seized up

Nissan and oiling problems, say it ain't so! I should know since I'm a Nissan guy! Been taking Nissans to trackdays for more than two decades now and first thing to do is upgrade the subframe bushings to solid bushings (Edit, I know, has nothing to do with oil problems but trust me, do it!), then the oil pump to billet gears (fun weekend and true friends work for pizza/Chinese food and beer), some Redline MT90 in the trans and their 40W race oil in the engine, and do NOT run E85 in them unless you short change your oil! Nissans (Subarus and Hondas!) need clean fresh oil and a proper engine heat up cycle. Do that and your Nissan engine will last many years! Only Toyota-Yamaha boat anchor engines run fine on ten year old McDonalds fry oil waste.
I thought these were aluminum sleeved engines with a spray in liner. Didn't think it could be bored out.

That is a very clean engine….zero sludge in the rings. Perhaps this engine failure is the result of oil changes too often? Higher chance of a mistake when the oil is changed more often at a low quality quicky oil change place. Should either DIY or take to a trusted mechanic who will not make mistakes
Can vane oil pumps loose their oil prime if during the oil change the sump is left empty for an extended time period?
I'm currently building a Nissan VK56VD for boost; the engine was burning oil like crazy and likely had a starvation issue at one point. What are your thoughts on Accusumps and the like? Presents itself like cheap insurance for an 'expensive to me' rebuild....
If you are doing track days or drifting they are a help.
What oil filter brands do you recommend? Hard to find good information about them out there for flow and efficiency. I'm mostly worried about road racing/autocross applications.

At around 10:30 you mention that the AWD crank is more expensive than the RWD crank. What are the functional differences between the two cranks?
They look the same, I think it might be the bolts on the end.
Can there be chance of problem happening when after market tuning dyno run where they push engine to limit.
In the dyno room pushing the engine to the limit would cause visible scoring from the heat. No heat is seen. Detonation, could happen from this but in this specific video none is seen. Everything is in good shape, but low oil pressure or no oil was the cause.
Was this engine rebuilt? If so, the builder didn't check bearing clearances and had too small bearings installed. I don't think there can be any other explanation for EVERY SINGLE bearing being spun

It should cut out the ignition like it did on Chevy Vegas 50 years ago. It's insane that modern engines don't have low oil and high temperature cutout.
Old ones and the Vega did not either.

Props to the owner for shutting it down quickly enough to save the block. Most people would've kept driving till it windowed. I think I'd just go find a low mileage used engine if he's not interested in going for big power. And then sell the old cleaned up block and heads to someone who wants to build something.
We measured the block later and the bores were tapered past the maximum spec. The whole engine is trash!
isn't there an oil pressure switch that sets a code for low oil pressure when the pump should be providing high volume and pressure? All the engines with variable volume oil pumps I have experience with have those (30 psi or so for the switch). And running with insufficient oil pressure for prolonged time would have shown, and caused the rod bearings to fail before the mains.
There is a low oil code, which would be set off from low pressure. However considering the bad filter that option that he mention is the most likely factor.
By the time that comes on the engine is usually toast.
@@motoiq it should come on at 30 ish psi pressure when the engine expects more (like at start up). The engine won't be toast if the driver takes it easy and gets the actuator fixed. the 5 psi low oil pressure warning is pretty useless
But the hot idle pressure is lower than that.
@@motoiq That's ok, you have 2 sensors, 1 for when low volume and low pressure is programmed, 1 for when it's not. Many brands have these and they work to warn of a stuck oil pump actuator. But I don't think that is what happened here
