How to Change Phone Camera Settings for External Microphone (Works for ANY phone)

- EDIT: This quit working so I had to upgrade to the LG V40 ThinQ (it is spectacular), which I now use for all of my video filing and editing. The best part is the amount of data it can hold (up to 2 TB micro sd card) and the resolution/speed of the device.

Everything basically works the same as the LG G5 did, but much better and with a built-in telescope lens. I would highly recommend investing in the V40 if you are having troubles (as many of you are now in the comments). Just bought a pair of wireless lav's for some video production. After about an hours worth of tinkering and research, I figured out that you need a TRS to TRRS cable. Plug the TRS side (two lines on the jack) to your lav transmitter and the TRRS side (3 lines on the jack) into your phone and your regular camera app that came with your phone will work just fine. Luckily my lav setup came with the appropriate cable.

I bought a Rode Video Mic ME, and I was getting nuts with the mic "not working" when recording videos. I was so frustrated because is not a cheap mic. I was in the middle of returning the mic, then started recording using a regular voice recorder and noticed that it worked great with a voice recorder app, so I figured out that my mic was fine and it has to be something in the camera app. Thanks to your video I'm keeping my mic :)

You are live saver. I was so annoyed when I shoot mini interviews with Boya mic and sound wasn't recorded properly due to my build in recording app does not support external mic and there was no extra options to allow external mic to work properly. Once again thank you so much!

This mite be late but i agree and it dosent really work at all that millions of people are being fooled non of the settings work for me nor i have manny devises that should work ,but non of the worked with it.

H1 ext. mic is micro usb to usb-C into Galaxy A5. Open Camera > ext. mic if present works BUT the audio and video are not synced. I tried clearing cache. No solution in sight. please help, thanks. PS. TRS to TRRS adapter works on Voice Recorder app but neither stock camera app or Open Camera app. so i've tried that too.

I have a Note 8 with a Saramonic external Mic with a TRS -TRRS cable and can not get sound on Open Camera or on my phone camera app.

I do Live Music Shows on Face Book and my listeners complain about poor Audio Quality. Can you suggest a way to enter external audio input in my Mi A3 mobile from my sound system..? And which App can monitor the Audio Level of such audio input to my phone..? I have a Roland Sound System wherein I play Music Track and sing along on Mic. At present the Audio is received by my Mi A3 phone's inbuilt speaker and streamed live...BUT the quality of sound is not good to the ears of listeners...Please suggest a way to improve...Thanks..
The Roland Speaker is a simple item...Cube Lite Monitor...It's Audio can be sent through it's headphone socket only...

The problem with the above app. is the video quality is not as good as the native camera app. I use HedgeCam 2 which is a variant of the above app...but still not as good as the Camera Video App. Even all the video editing apps. interfere with the video quality of the original camera recording...That's my experience and I've tested quiet a few from different phones. Is there any way of connecting the external microphone directly to the phone video app?

This worked. Also, I have two cables that came with my Boya Microphone. One has the 3 lines on the tip and the other has 4. I have to use different one for my android and iphones. But I couldn't get the external mic to work with the stock camera app

hans caraan, I don't know for sure; however, they would need to have 3 rings around the prong (that you stick on the phone). Instead of 2 rings like most input jacks do.
problem with open camera it's not really recording the same quality as the default camera app

What are you attaching the Mic with to compensate for the TRRS? I grabbed the app. I have the Audiotechmica ATR3350 that supplies the conveter. But, no volume on the Mic. I have all sounds set to max. External Mic selected in the app. I'm on a galaxy s7. Any ideas? Thx. Good stuff.
For the Boya BY-M1 mic (in my other video) you don't need one. But I still use this adapter because it is made to fit with a phone case on:

Try that adapter. Works great for me. Must be 3 prong. I don't think a splitter is necessary for using a microphone with the open camera app.

Does this works on microphones that has only two rings around the audio jack?
Unfortunately it probably will not. You can get a splitter with two inputs connecting to one 3 ring jack. That should work.
