    Connecting an external microphone to an Android phone isn't exactly a straight-forward thing to do. And it gets a little bit more confusing because external mics don't work with all video recording apps on Android. So in this video I'll explain how to properly connect an external microphone to an Android phone.
    I'm using a 3.5mm clip-on mic for this example. And if I just plug it into the headphone jack you probably already know that the mic won't work at all. That's because this mic has the wrong type of plug which only has 3 sections on it. To have this mic work you will need a TRRS adapter like the one from StarTech. It's an inexpensive adapter that allows you to access the input and output connections inside the headphone jack. It looks like an ordinary Y-splitter but it's wired differently internally.
    On the TRRS plug it has 4 sections on it which is the key to making the mic work. The other end has ports with headphone and microphone icons on it. So just plug the microphone into the end with the microphone icon. Then plug the TRRS adapter into the phone. You'll have to connect it in this order or the phone might not recognize the mic. The StarTech adapter even has brief instructions on it as a reminder.
    And let me just clarify that all Android phones can record audio through the headphone jack with the TRRS adapter. But I've found that the ability to use an external mic during video recording depends on the camera app. On my Google Pixel, external mic functionality during video recording was introduced in version 6.1. Before that, an external mic could only work with audio recording only but not with video on the Pixel. So the only way to know is to try it with your own phone.
    And here's some additional tips. If your phone's pre-installed camera app won't record audio during video recording you can try the free Open Camera app from the Google Play store. I've tested it and it definitely works with external mics for video recording. And finally if your Android phone doesn't have a headphone jack then you'll need this inexpensive USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in addition to the StarTech TRRS adapter. I have an ASUS Zenfone 8 (Android 12) - I got this to work using the OpenCamera App & B612 app. In OpenCamera go to: Settings > Video Settings > Audio Source > External Mic (if present). It doesn't seem to work with the standard camera app that comes with the phone unfortunately. Here's what I used for anyone curious: USB C to 3.5mm (into the phone) -> POSUGEAR Headphone Mic Splitter -> 3.5mm SC5 TRS to TRS adapter cable -> Rode Wireless Go II Lavalier mic. Works a charm! Thanks for the helpful vid!

    I just wanted to say thank you so much! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get my Sony Lavalier Microphone ECM LV1 to work on either Android, Iphone, or my laptop. Then I realized that sure, it might fit in the port, but it only had 2 rings and I needed 3 rings. I ended up buying a TRRS adapter/splitter on Amazon. It should come in the mail on Saturday. You fixed my problem and I thank you! Have a great day :)

  • @ZotmundSzele
    @ZotmundSzele Před 2 lety +5

    Great video, however I cannot make this work. I have a Rode SmartLav+ with TRRS plug. (and also TRRS to TRS in case)
    Since my phone does not have 3.5mm jack I use the USB C to 3.5mm adapter. When plugging the mic in, it detects a headphones which is already a problem. I can neither record anything with any app nor do I hear sound (as obviously I am not connecting headphones). I think being able to record with an external mic (or to change the input source) is exclusive to Pixels.
    So even if I get the adapter to separate input and output AND use the USB C adapter (having no 3.5mm jack) I am not even close as my phone does not record via external mic. Not sure what am I doing wrong.

    Does the cable allow you to use the microphone and hear yourself in the headphone part at the same time (some what like an in-ear monitor)?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately you cannot monitor audio as you’re recording. It’s a limitation of the phone/software. Many years ago someone I knew had a professional camera app that I though had the ability to monitor audio while recording but I don’t remember the name. Even if it did allow monitoring, what you’d hear in the headphones would have a slight delay because of how it works.

    is there a way to connect only microphone but with sound still coming out from the phone's speakers? sort of like a headset but instead of coming out from the earpiece, sound will come out from the phone's speaker.

    Yeah. But, how to connect the stereo microphone to a phone?

    I've bought two mics. Both have 4 sections already on the plug, but i can't get either to record on a nexus 5x (usb c or headphone jack) or my pixel 3 (usb c only)

    Great video! Do you have any suggestions on how to connect a more advanced external microphone? Like a Zoom 4n Pro?
