- Despicable Me 4 is here! Who could have predicted 3 sequels and 2 spinoffs? Lots of people prolly. Minions, man. Minions. Anyway, the first one is…well it's the one that started it all. So let's do it! Here's everything right with Despicable Me!

Gru knowing every minion by heart should've counted as a win. That takes a lot of commitment to know the names of hundreds of yellow creatures without using name tags.
Are you saying that you can't tell hundreds of people apart without using name tags? Gru's been around them since he was a child, he can probably tell the difference. It's kinda like how if you go to someone's house and they have two cats, you might not be able to tell them apart, but they can.
@@ShadowdaHedgie11 That's a valid point. But I was leaning more into how impractical it is for the management side of things. Since they are identical and numerous, it would be extremely difficult to keep track of them without some sort of system in place. But of course, Gru makes it impressive because I, myself, am terrible at remembering names lol
@@ShadowdaHedgie11 I'm gonna be honest, if people didn't wear clothes and all sounded the same and gender wasn't a thing, I couldn't tell people of the same races apart. My own race included.
@@ShadowdaHedgie11 gru has literally hundreds of employees, that's different to a few pets
@@AverageSynthnot even hundreds, in the second movie it was confirmed that there are 10,400 minions
Ah yes. The heartwarming story about a famous supervillain who becomes a real hero thanks to adopting 3 special girls. Who get less and less focus in every movie thanks to some hyperactive Minions who are now basically the main attraction for Illumination.
"Moneymoneymoneymoneymoney" -Minions
That's the sting. This film is good, just got massively eclisped by the Brand.
It’s sad that the minion subplot was genuinely the most interesting part of the new film.
@@samuelburton302 It's a rich man's world...
The fustrating thing about the Despicable Me Franchise is that the first movie is genuinely good. But the problem is that as the series went on, it forgot about the most important aspect of what made the first movie so great. The girls and their relationship with Gru. Those three and their relationship with Gru got less and less focus with instead the Minions getting more screentime!
True.
yeah it was a actually kind of heartfelt story about found family, coming out one's shelf opening up to people that happened to have some funny yellow dudes in it. well i may be exaggerating the emotional impact a little but the relationships felt earnt by the end.
Nobody asked.
@@jacobs1834sorry to burst your bubble but people can share their thoughts/opinions without being prompted to, it's called free will, moreover this is a comment section and not a question answer forum, so there's literally no one that's supposed to be asking.
@@ollyravenhill7341 Exactly! THe first movie was actually really heartfelt
Like any good arc, Gru's character growth feels appropriate because he shows how he can still care about people despite being a villain. Look at the coffee scene; his action of tipping the barista was unnecessary, but it shows that he has empathy, even in small doses. This makes it easier to sell his character growth when the girls bond later on.
I'd like to point out; he stole someone's order, did not PAY for it, but left a tip.
But yeah, his relationship with the girls is adorable. He helped mend his own views of family (Not having a great one with his mom) with them.
@@artisannoteworthy Exactly. My point is he has empathy in small doses. A hero wouldn't have done any of that, but even as a villain he's not going to be cruel to a barista when his (unjust) frustration was with the long line.
@@artisannoteworthy Also, agreed. Personally, his dynamic with them was stronger than the other sequel relationships.
@@artisannoteworthy don't tips go straight to the entry level employees, while paying for the food/drink has to trickle down from the top?
the thing that makes this movie really sweet is the growing relationship between gru and the girls, especially margo. edith and agnes adapt to their situation relatively quickly, but as the oldest, it takes margo more time to trust gru and accept him as her father. it’s cute how gru and margo both bring each other’s walls down and they all become a real family by the end. i feel like the other movies kinda lack the heart that this one has.
This movie was one of my favorite funny lines in an animated movie.
“Do you want to explode??”
Kills me everytime 🤣
1st movie was about finding a family through adoption.
2nd movie was about finding a family through love.
3rd movie was about finding a long lost estranged family.
4th movie was about building a family.
I won't deny that the 3rd and 4th movies have lost the message in one way or another, but this is pretty much how I think _Despicable Me_ goes through their arcs.
I love the fact that the greatest accomplishment Gru's mother was proud of was his parenting. Nothing related to villainy. That speaks deep to the continuity in DM3. Gru was always borderline between good and evil, but it was being a parent that got him off the fence. Also, something else that happens in the DM2.
Still, always love this movie, though Megamind will also have a place in my heart for similarly different unique reasons.
Looking forward to another great EGA video!!
So, the neat thing about this movie is that.... everyone is kind of awful. Well, not QUITE everyone, but Mostly everyone.
The orphanage lady is evil, the banker is evil, the guy at the fair is evil, the guy letting his dog crap on other peoples' yards? Evil. Evil evil evil. And then there's Gru, who, at the core of it? Just kinda wants to be left alone. Even Doctor Whatshisface is a dick. Gru's whole deal in this movie is that really, at the core of it, the evil thing is just a job, he'd much rather just live his own life without having to interact with neighbors or..... anyone.... And at the core of it, he's not even really Evil at all.
Seriously, the dude tips, he's polite to servers, he's funny with the kids, if a little crass at first, he cares about his henchmen, and when push comes to shove, he basically turns into the good man gone to war just to get his adopted kids back. Is he a bit of a dick with the oversized carbon belching car? A bit, but I question if that was entirely HIS decision, or if it was being made for him by social expectations.
Kinda like the Addams Family. Sure, they're strange and creepy and _really_ like their goth aesthetic. But like, Gomez and Morticia are madly in love, and they care about the rest of the family (I've seen an argument that actually Gomez being madly in love with, and truly kind to, Morticia is actually part of the weirdness).
I'd say Gru plays the role of the necessary good & evil, bringing balance. Mom raised him well, even with questionable methods.
@@OrigamiMarie gomez loving his wife is part of the weirdness since they were supposed to be the opposite of the average american family
E.g. boomer jokes about hating theie spouse
I agree with a take by Cinema Therapy, where they say why the first despicable me movie is so much better than all the sequel is because Gru is actually a villain.
It really isn't the same without a turning point as strong as that, i feel
Yeah I was really surprised when he said they get better as they go along, I’d say the exact opposite
They should’ve added a plot in the new ones of one of the girls taking up the family villain business as they get older!!
It's so interesting to me to think about how vector would've been a marine biologist without his father there, and Gru would've become an astronaut if his mom had ever once given him the light of day
Gru dodging them missile and backhanding the shark will always be badass
“They took a relatively grounded and laidback first movie, and turned it into this obnoxious farce of a franchise”
-Schaffrillas (I know he said it about another animated film franchise, but it also applies here).
Ice Age?
@@Firebender554 yep
I dont see it
I wouldn't call Despicable Me "grounded and laidback". The tone stayed the same mostly.
God damn the pyramid being disguised as the sky actually got me i can't believe I've never noticed it.
It took me longer than I would like to admit that I missed that one. It finally hit me and I just shook my head because I felt really dumb.
@@DrgnLdyLizzie2001 Same
I was also today years old for that one...
I just assumed it was some weird wall Vactor built
It blows my mind how hard they went with this movie. Like Illumination went all out on the writing, cast, and direction to make as good a first impression as they could. Also shoutout to the score, it's super great and one of the most recognizable parts of the movie.
Lol, the Minion floating into space and Dr.Nefario taking a minute before saying "I meant to close that...he'll be alright, I'm sure..." KILLS me.
As a balding guy, voted 'Most Likely to try and take over the World' in his high-school yearbook, who's built some kickass gadgets- including armed ones- over the years, and then got a couple of stepdaughters who absolutely lit up my life... I've never felt so seen 😄
I'm just glad it's also an enjoyable movie!
Pharrell Williams’ original song is always one of the best parts of these movies
Some kids are afraid of actual Santa. He's big, and loud and sometimes his breath stinks. The fact that he breaks into your house while you're asleep and eats your cookies doesn't help, even if he leaves you presents.
please do everything great about disney's bolt! i feel it's super underrated and it was my favorite movie for a long time as a kid!
Truuuue!! Bolt is highly underrated
I remember that movie. Played a PlayStation game. Though the cat annoyed me.
i love how Illumation was creative with the minions, they could've been lazy and made them all the same and have no personality, but instead, they gave each minion a different haircut, body shape and eye number and gave them a fun and goofy personality, yet they can be serious when they need to be.
and the best part is they made gru a good boss, he can tell each minion apart just by glance alone
As was said by Schaffrillas Productions, this movie is just one of two out of the many Illumination films that really had any artistic feel about them. I’ll have to check what the second one on the list was.
Sing 2 if I remember correctly
Finally old enough to rewatch and understand "NASA isnt sending the monkeys anymore"
I’ve come to enjoy the Wins videos more than the Sins Videos
I've stopped watching Sins for years. I like a little positivity in my life instead of more complaining.
Character Development 👍🏿
weirdly enough something I still remeber vividly is my learning english mexican mother taking us to this moving and not understanding Gru at all but literally cackling in the theatre at the burro line. It was dead quiet other than her
Still hoping for episodes about the two greatest sports movies of all time, A knights tale, and Real Steel
And Robot Jox.
I had never realized that a knight's tale is a sports movie with medieval paint on. Huh. Neat!
3:01 I actually never noticed the pyramid that he camouflaged.. I absolutely cant believe that worked....
😂😂😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀
I was so young watching this the first time I also didnt notice that xD
Dude it took me YEARS to notice that it was just… right there. In the background the whole time.
Oh my God.
Bruh, Gru literally climbs it near the end lol!
I think the first movie is fantastic, and the second is also fun. The sequel finishes Gru’s redemption arc and ties things together really well!
1:17 All right if anyone's wondering about Lee's tone of voice about the minions it's cuz he's not a fan.... Which I respect greatly. He Saw megamind first so of course preference...... Love you Lee❤
5:35 Ohhhh so is THIS where I get my occasional nightmares where my happy, flying dreams suddenly lose control and either veer into an electric storm or into the atmosphere and I drift off into space? I mean, those are terrifying, I hate those dreams because I LOVE my flying dreams and those nightmares RUIN IT, but this definitely provides some insight.
3:02 It's so fantastic I didn't notice it until now.
"Before we had AI just make videos of our kids." This line had me laughing for quite a while! Love this channel!
It was Heitor Pereira who composed the score, not Hans Zimmer
This movie was a big part of my childhood and I'm very happy to see it get the Cinemawins treatment.
By the way, Heitor Pereira was actually the movie's main composer: the first film's score is probably still my favorite of his and it's a shame it still hasn't seen an official release.
13:24 I know what next week's EGA is going to be, so here's a list of suggestions for future EGA videos:
-The Lost World: Jurassic Park
-The Rugrats Movie
-Aquaman & the Lost Kingdom
-Chicken Run
-Small Soldiers
-Atlantis: The Lost Empire
-Godzilla (1998)
-A Bug's Life
He said he's wanted to cover The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 for a long time.
From a masterpiece to a beloved franchise Despicable Me will live in our hearts since 2010!
Ah, "Despicable Me", the first one! Even though I've been thinking I saw the inferior "Supervillain Turning Hero/Heel-Face Turn" film of 2010 back in the day, the Cinema Therapy video (and I'm sure this one will also) made me realize that before the Minionpocalypse this was a fun and wholesome little movie!
And to be a bit of a devil's advocate, the 2015 "Minions" film was really fun with some more clever jokes that I expected.
In any case, keep up the great work, take care and best wishes to you and your family! Have a nice and safe summer!
12:16 man, I'm so tired of animation being called something made specifically for kids. Cuz in most cases, it's not. Just because it's a cartoon, doesn't mean it's made mainly for kids. That's a disrespectful stereotype.
I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE! Planning on watching despicable me 4 soon.
5:56-6:03 That comparison has never occurred to me before. I applaud you for pointing it out.
12:43 I'll give you an "expectation subversion" win for that comment.

3:54 I think there was an alternate version of this scene It might of been on the dvd where gru looks up to see the ballon kid from earlier returns with a few friends carrying toy guns doesn’t really have much to do with but that’s been sitting in the back of mind for years i need confirmation on whether or not it was something I dreamed up
so I can't sleep, and I was feeling a little down and then I saw you'd uploaded a new video and my first thought was "YES I need some positivity in my life" and I'm commenting this just to let you know that your videos, that always finds the good in everything, is a a breath of fresh air in today's media-drama society and I appreciate it SO much. Never stop making these videos
Despicable Me is my go-to feel good film, because it is a very, very sweet film. You have to have the coldest of cold, dead hearts to not smile at how the girls warm up to Gru and vice-versa. Agnes is literally the most adorable thing ever put on screen, Edith is the child that impresses and horrifies with how unafraid of anything she is and Margo has a very sharp mind.
I'm not a fan of the later films as each one had to be bigger and bigger each time, when the feels (for me at least) is the very simple father/(adopted) children relationship that kind of got lost a bit.
Megamind (a film I also love) is a very different film, and so never one I've thought to compare this to.
5:25 "Eventually, the Minion stopped thinking."
"They're both good, and Megamind is a lot better."
Permission to treat this witness as hostile...
Denied. Speaking truth is not a hostile act
5:38 he acctully said Dart gun, not smart gun
Also 6:45 thats also funny… chocolate “chip” cookies
YES YOUR FINALLY COVERING MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ANIMATED MOVIE
Thank you for the Community reference at the end, it made my day :)
YAY! GXK next week ! Hope you cover minus one as well
Yesss just, what I needed for now!!!
This made me scream out "DOES THAT MEAN YOU'RE EGAing MEGAMIND"
And then I remembered you already did, so I'm going to watch it too
cheers Lee! Keep doing this as long as you love to
Despicable Me 1: it all goes downhill from here.
I used to watch this movie all the time growing up, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. Honestly, none of the sequels have come close to this one.
Everything great about Sonic the Hedgehog movie 2.
Eventualy that minion stoped thinking
Da cinema king is back baby he neva miss we're eating good today y'all
I've always enjoyed this film, but Cinema Therapy's video about Gru's arc in the first film made me appreciate it more.
Thank you for your positivity and sharing your love of movies!
I've never watched any of these, but this video makes me interested in seeing the first at least.
The butt scene killed me. 😂 “Haha! Butt!”
My physics teacher taught us what a vector was by useing that Clio over and over again. So a win to vector teaching physics
i love tihs franchise with all my heart
3:02 I have NEVER noticed that!
Everything GREAT About Inside Out 2!
12:50 HERESY!
3:03 camouflage job is so good never noticed until now when you pointed it out 😅
Absolute classic
Who knew a movie about a villain with yellow pill people could be so funny and heartwarming?
8:42 I never realized it but he kinda has a whole aquatic animal thing going
I think the minions are adorable and just classic hilarious slapstick humor generators (which is perfect for kids), and i love them... in the movies. outside of the movies... ehhhhhh
The biggest reason I like this movie is biggest I remember watching it with my dad, who passed away when I was 13. When Gru punched a shark, I exclaimed something about that being cool but impossible. And my dad hugged me and said “I’d punch a shark for you”. Sometimes a movie doesn’t have to be good to mean something to you
Please do Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs next, please
Gru-Ray Disc Reminds me of Blu-Ray Disc
I absolutely loved this movie when it came out.... I was 14 lol and i loved all the sequels after as well even as I got older. So yes I'm 28 now and still wana go watch the new one cus I love me the minions!
Great video.
Never been here EARLY, what a feeling!
Shocked you haven’t spoken about this movie before! Excited to watch!
DM1 is my favorite of the series. It's got the most heart.
I agree.
There's a detail with Margo's shirt that becomes really important with the second movie. In this one we can see the drawing of the shirt is all ruined, meanwhile in the second one the drawing is all nice and pretty. I think is a neat detail.
Mary Poppins voices Grus mom 14 years later and I still can’t believe that having said that I also can’t believe ms Hattie would also become Grus wife later on
Love this movie
In fairness, all of the minion/DM movies are gems in their own right. It's unusual for every entry is a cash cow franchise to be at least a partial win, but I think they are - especially if you have kids.
I already guessed next week's movie. It's part of the monsterverse. Hey Lee when will you do some Toho Godzilla movies?
Finally you do this movie
I been saying for years how Despicable Me is an incredible film, but that Illumination took all the wrong lessons from it's success.
gru not winning knowing all of his minions names? thats... Thats despicable
Maybe instead of therapy all parents just need to save their kids from impending doom in order for them to begin reconnecting and repairing the relationship
that community bit at the end got me on the floor :))
Sometimes it's good to look back and remember that Despicable Me is actually a really good movie. It deserved to take off like it did.
Loved the video can you please do everything wrong with Jack and the Giant slayer please
I'd really REALLY love for you to do the dark crystal! Your videos are the only way I can get my finance to enjoy the movies I grew up with.
I laughed way to hard the first time I saw that chem light joke in the vents.
fingers crossed for the rest of the series
>definitely not crushin for agent wilde
I'm absolutely in the minority here, but to me, Despicable Me is a lot lot better than Megamind. I just can't see what everyone else sees in Megamind. It has a somewhat clever plot, but I see nothing special in it. While Despicable Me is FUN in all capitals. I love the bright colors. I love the upbeat songs. I love the jokes. And I love how these movies handle the topic of family a lot more than I like a big-foreheaded smartass fighting over a girl with some incel. That's just me tho
Of course Gru feels things for the Minions, he knows all of their names! He views every single one of them as an individual and not a yellow mob
The fact this movie ends is the best and only win for it.
Next video teaser Godzilla X Kong, the new empire
Dang and here I thought that the next week movie review was going to be Rio, hence the statue on the hill.
Word of God (according to TV Tropes):
- The minions are genetically engineered corn kernels. The "genetically-engineered” part of that description. However, might have been retconned; judging by the backstory of Minions.
- Gru's first name is Felonious and his birthday is September 28, 1960 (making him two years older than his voice actor, Steve Carell).
- *Margo, Edith and Agnes aren't biologically related to each other.* But they always hang out with each other and consider one another as sisters.
“Quiet down fish!”
